We had really good Italian foods in Rome, so naturally wanted our first meal at Venezia to be Italian as well. Our hotel staff recommended Ai-Do Fogheri. The restaurant was just a short walk away from the hotel. The inside was very nicely decorated & cozy, wasn't that busy when we went for dinner at 8:30 pm. Unfortunately that's all the good stuff I can say about this place. Couple of things made our visit to the restaurant not so pleasant. No.1: after we were seated and given our menu to decide, it took them almost 20-22 minutes to come and take our orders...I already mentioned earlier that they were not busy (less than 50% full) at that time. No.2: one of our knives were dirty. No.3: the menu is in Italian! I guess that's not a complete surprise, but when we were asking questions to our waiter before placing orders he was answering almost 85% in Italian and was visibly annoyed by us (keep in mind, we are not "white people"). No.4: such a confusing menu! Was trying to order something from the "Primi Di Carne, first courses with meat" section and eventually came to know that only 2 dishes out of 5 listed there have meat in them :/ We have been in Italy already 5 days now, and had the pleasure to enjoy Italian food in at least 6-7 different restaurants. But I don't think this restaurant is anything special, items are overpriced and the foods don't taste that good either.

    Traffic copping at Ai-Do Fogheri!

Always great to stop here for dinner! We've nevertheless sat on the patio before but what a great experience. We were right next to the grill. It was awesome to watch a master griller at work. I had the grilled sausages and polenta. Flavorful and the polenta was perfectly prepared. I also had the gnocchi stuffed with gorgonzola. Yum but a lot of food! Did my best to work it. Friends had the seafood pasta, which was loaded with fresh goodies from the ocean nearby and Lasagna, which is a signature dish here and appropriately so.... its perfect.

Well stocked bar with lots of Chianti from the region.

Our last night in Italy before returning to the USA. We checked into a nearby hotel and they gave us a free shuttle service over to this restaurant. We were really glad to have a child here because of the excellent family atmosphere. And decor is very well done old-style, it's a super well-stocked bar lots of chianti from the local region. They have an open fire grill for the meats and other foods. The kitchen is open for anyone to look into and watch the food being prepared. This place has a real character with it, playing English language US classic hits. We ordered the Balsonic beefsteak and I wanted Spaghetti Ragu. Both arrived right behind a tossed salad everything was fresh excellently prepared. Even the temperature of the food and the plates was top notch. Truly an authentic Italian dining experience. Right next to the airport and free shuttle service to and from rom the hotel make this a great little spot for dinner, especially considering the prices are very reasonable. Perhaps a little bit understaffed right now because it seem like the staff on duty was really working of the hook! We didn't have to wait long for anything, but I would've liked to have a second beer to go with my meal. Unfortunately there were just too busy to bring anything, even after I ordered. Also when you're not asked if we want to desert, did you know that something is really cramped. Well recommended. We would return if staying near the airport in Venice.

Absolutely spectacular seafood, pasta with that sauce that made us finish that third basket of bread wiping the dishes clean, lasagna that tasted like Nonna was in the kitchen; warm and loving staff that made us feel like 20 Million Euros, a fantastic accordion player who played all the great Italian classics, reasonable prices, a lovely and inviting interior, seating outside with views of the canal in this the Cannaregio district & melt in the mouth Tiramisu that made us request to leave that big rectangular baking dish, serving spoon( and bib) on the trolley by our tables. But what they've created can be a very fun experience if approached with the right attitude. Come during daylight hours, hopefully late afternoon (for lunch/drinks/appetizers) and sit only at an outside table along the Grand Canal. Situated near the bridge to Piazza Romolo, Rio Novo isn't on a very attractive part of the canal. Ignore the mass of people hurrying back to the bridge to catch their bus to who knows where. Look only at the canal. This might be the busiest, most intensely crowded part of the Grand Canal and it's a gas to watch. Motorboats kicking up wake, tourists on private water taxis making their way to a more attractive part of town and, once in a while some gondoliers taking passengers in a part of the canal far from serene. Is all of this fun to watch? Indeed. The staff here aims to please and will happily grab your camera and wait patiently for pedestrians to pass by before snapping a few dozen photos of you enjoying the place. After your meal, the server will return with an ice cold, complimentary Limoncello for you. And the food and drink? Very reasonably priced and satisfying (we enjoyed both spaghetti and lasagna), especially when you throw in the waterfront entertainment. There's a million prettier canal-adjacent restaurants, pricier and run by Italians. That said, Rio Novo is a fun place from which to enjoy the hustle-bustle of the canal along with well-priced, satisfying food and drink.

They also offered to make some penne pasta with a pomodoro ragu sauce for our son even though it wasn't on the menu. It was all perfect. It was the best seafood ravioli I have ever had. The servers were very attentive but let us have space. On that note, my fellow Americans, please don't expect a fast meal, the pace of the service is slow so you can take your time and enjoy it. We will absolutely be back for more. Such kind people and excellent food.
