I decided to get a Brazilian wax before my trip to Aruba. I saw all of the rave reviews and made my appointment. First of all, when I walked in, I noticed that there was not a lot of privacy in this establishment. You can hear everything that is going on if there is an appointment before you. The girl before me was told that she couldn't get waxed because she shaved the night before. As I said, no privacy. So then it was my turn to go behind the curtain. Well...I don't have a very high pain tolerance. I was miserable during the entire experience. Although I was not screaming, I did say "Oww" a few times. Aida kept saying that I was a big baby every time she snatched the hair away and I gritted my teeth Now don't get me wrong, I'm not extremely sensitive to words, but I am sensitive to pain. She really started to piss me off. If this is a service that you provide, I would think that you would learn how to deal with customers who are new to waxing or are sensitive to hair removal. Normally I don't write lengthy reviews, but I feel obligated to share the following so others don't put their skin at risk. $275 later (before tip) and my skin is much worse than it was before I arrived. I didn't expect the atmosphere to look like the luxury spas I have gone to (Sea Island GA, Four Seasons etc) but I was a little taken aback. It's clean, but think styrofoam flowers and vacuum cleaners on full display in the bathroom. My gut told me to leave as soon as I walked in, but I know plenty of dive bars and shabby restaurants that serve great food - maybe this was similar? Unfortunately, that line of thinking does not apply to skincare. Aida is a perfectly nice, soothing woman but is wrong to claim this is a full service salon - and certainly has no business providing facials. Professionals know immediately which areas of your face are ready for extraction, and which to leave alone. It was clear that she did not know the difference, but for some reason I let it play out...hoping this was simply a different technique than I was used to. The result was bleeding skin after a painful guessing game she played of where to pinch and push. I regret enduring it, and stupidly allowing someone with zero expertise to add microdermabrasion. It was awful. I will say the eyebrow wax was pretty good. Next up, a totally uneven pedicure (complimentary Halloween Oreo cookies awkwardly provided.) my friend and I skipped our manicures to get out of there as soon as possible. The kicker? When you're paying, you deliver your gratuity verbally! "Do you want to leave a tip? How much?" It's completely uncomfortable, unprofessional and bizarre. I need to caveat that the 5 star is for the AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH factor. The spa itself is neither luxurious nor the most put together location - its clean and pleasing, but it is not your high end presentation - and it doesn't need to be. In a small space, Aida has managed to pack New York - LA high end skin care and pampering, at very approachable, reasonable pricing. I indulged in their skin exfoliating japanese - rice based body massage to be finished with a lathering of emollient rich butters that left my winter ravished body smoother than a newborns bum! I then had a collagen facial and cringed to see the black dirt left over dead skin pile that left and was replaced by moisturized glowing skin. The staff is soothing and pampering, and Aida herself puts her heart and soul into just giving you the best experience at the most affordable price point. AMAZING experience!! Ok, so this was my first ever Brazilian and I am 39 weeks and 3 days preggers!! Aida is AMAZING!!! Her location is SUPER easy to find and there was plenty of metered parking. I paid like 2 bucks for an hour and had almost 45 mins left! As I was walking in another client was leaving. Her office is super "intimate" and she does an excellent job of scheduling clients to ensure everyone's privacy. I expressed my concerns err fear and Aida was so gentle. She talked to me the entire time and at one point I forgot I was acutally getting waxed!! When she saw that I was getting a little anxious she let me take a little break and then continued working. She doesnt use typical wax and strips as it felt like a soothing clay mask for my yoni, until obviously the hair was removed (sorry for the TMI) I will def be back for another trip to Brazil and to indulge myself in her other spa treatments!! WHY I WENT: - On the hunt for a good Brazilian in Old Town - I had only had one waxing experience that TRAUMATIZED ME...after reading the Yelp reviews, I thought I'd give Aida a shot... WHAT I LIKED: - AIDA! Seriously an amazing woman. Anyone that can make me think of something other than my traumatizing waxing experience and that can actually make me go "You're right - that's NOT so bad!" is truly wonderful. - SPEED - she did NOT RUSH, but I was in and out under a half-hour. - REPOIRE - Aida is super funny and even in her stern moments when I was hollering she'd somehow make me feel better. - Her sugar wax is SO MUCH more gentle than the paper wax method. I just finished my first visit and it was wonderful! I walked in to a welcoming receptionist and then Aida introduced herself and led me away to her space. I had a bikini, under arm and chin done. I'm going to try to be as honest as possible in this review without being too graphic. Gentlemen and the faint of heart, avert your eyes. Ladies, look no further. Aida is the answer to all of your waxing needs. I'm actually terrified to ever leave Old Town because I would have to leave Aida, and that would just plain suck (Sidenote: she recently moved and her new addy is: 1309 King Street, Alexandria VA 22314. Just a 5-minute walk from King Street Metro). As you can see in my photo, I am quite a fair lady (just not YOUR fair lady), and waxing, especially bikini waxing, has always been a bit of a pain, literally and figuratively. While your first visit might be painful, each time thereafter gets a little bit easier. And the best part is that there are virtually NO after effects! Minimal bumps, irritation, redness, etc., I don't know how she does it, but Aida is a miracle worker! If you're sensitive to traditional waxing, give Aida a shot. My first impression was a good impression. I don't know what took me so long to find this place. I have now found my go to ESTHETICIAN! Aida's energy allowed me to feel at ease, like I was visiting a friend. We talked a lot during my facial, mainly because I had so many questions about the process, the products, her life, and family. I would like to respond to Aida's public reply: I was aware of the technique, but did not scrutinize every single Yelp review to see if she used gloves or not. I was wrong in assuming that people who deal with sensitive areas would use protection. I did not know that luxury spas put more than one client in a room. I have never been to a spa that does that, and I don't think I've ever been to a luxury spa. If they actually do this, I don't want to go. I really like small businesses, and just because I did not like your small business, Aida, does not mean that I hate all small businesses. You are accusing me of something you know nothing about. Please, feel free to read all of my Yelp reviews. You will notice that I frequent small businesses (mostly restaurants) often, and like many of them. I did read other Yelp reviews after I went, and discovered that you have defended yourself against others who complained about no gloves, so I don't believe if I had addressed this to your face you would have "accommodated" me. This may be a long one, so I'm going to start by explaining my experience and then breaking down the pros and cons. Here we go... I recently got the Hanakaumi exfoliation massage, they start with oils, exfoliation and then end with a massage. The young lady at the front was very nice, and Aida also introduced herself, she was sweet. However, I'm not sure what happened to the woman that did my massage but she seemed cranky. Most massages that I get I take everything off accept for my underwear. Just as we were getting started the masseuse asked me to remove my underwear... This was very strange but I didn't want to be rude. She started with the oils and rubbed it everywhere, and I mean everywhere. I felt like I was getting a breast exam (I'm sorry if this is too personal, but you should know what you're getting into). Then she took what felt like the rough end of a sponge and exfoliated everywhere but the lady bits down south. The massage was fine, but she never wiped off the oil after which left me feeling greasy. As soon as she was done she practically ran out of the room. I didn't even know if she was done because she left the door wide open!!! After a few minutes of laying there confused I got up to get dressed. Well, she had put my basket of clothes directly in front of the door that she left open. I wasn't given a towel or robe to cover myself. I literally tiptoed to the door, each hand covering my goodies, to grab my clothes and hide in a corner. As I tried to get dressed I realized I should wipe off some of the oil because it was EVERYWHERE. I couldn't find a towel so I grabbed a small cloth that was folded nicely in a basket on the tray. The white cloth I picked up was stained with orange/red... So I put that down. Maybe it was just that one? Nope. Each one I picked up had stains all over it. I decided to let the oils stay where they were. At least my skin was soft... Pros: -Aida was very nice -They have tea and snacks while you wait -The massage itself was decent Cons -My masseuse was rude -There was no privacy... Since she left the door wide open while I was naked (this is completely unacceptable) -It wasn't the cleanest environment Bottom line, if you are a bit shy when it comes to your massage maybe you should go elsewhere. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! My friends LOVE her. I never went as I do my own Brazilian waxing and could not justify paying $55 for something I can do myself. I decided to go as I ran out of wax strips, was lazy to get more, and it was just coincidental that I needed a Brazilian STAT. In and out in UNDER 10 minutes! BRAZILIAN IN TEN MINUTES? I'M AMAZED. It usually takes me at LEAST a half an hour to do it myself. Left me absolutely bare because she could go over the same areas multiple times to get everything because her wax is not harsh like hot wax is. Her shop is a bit brighter and dentist-y looking than I thought it would have been. She's not SUPER warm and bubbly, but not unkind. It hurt more in certain areas than others, but was def. worth it. She is also very knowledgeable and will share helpful tips for your home care regimen. - Product line. They carry (and use) the Sothys product line, which is a solid Parisian line of skincare products. Also, they sell a great tinted 40 SPF sunscreen that leaves a matte finish. I ended up buying some to replace my summertime foundation. - Pricing. I felt that the pricing was competitive and a of good value. For example, the facial included a mini foot and leg massage, and the massage was a combination of Swedish, hot stone and aromatherapy. Cons: - Ambiance. It's not the place I'd choose to "escape from it all", which is too bad because the service is great. Mainly, it's the noise factor and lighting. I think with some paint, noise absorbing drapes and dim area lighting the customer experience would be improved greatly. Having said this, I definitely recommend her would go back for maintenance (facials, body scrubs, waxing) type services. I'd also pick up some product while I was there. read more

I just moved here after living in San Francisco for 10 years so I was anxious to find a new waxing lady. Aida is a lovely woman and knows what she is doing. I will return but here are a few things you should know. 1 yes - she uses a different type of wax - but that is only half of it - she uses a different technique where she rolls the wax with her fingers up and down on your skin and scrapes it off in a rolling motion. it sounds weird and it does feel weird at first as it is pulling out the hair in multiple directions. but somehow it doesn't hurt as bad - though the sensation is unique. end of the day someone pulling out your hairs in your girlie bits hurts. but i have no redness today so that is fabulous! 2 there is no privacy in her office from a noise perspective - yes she has partitions but you can hear everything - which I didn't know and was quite embarrassed to see 3 women waiting for me when i exited. 3 she really encourages you to do a full brazilian. i have had many before and i don't need to go the full monty yet she pretty much told me i had to! so if you don't want a brazilian, be clear with her. $55 for a brazilian - $20 for a brow. read more

Today, I got my first Brazilian waxing at Aida Spa and had an awesome experience. After researching for the best place to go for ages and reading all the reviews, Aida Spa was my top choice. I enjoyed meeting her. She certainly made me feel very comfortable and put me at ease as I had no threshold for pain. Aida used a sugar and honey based waxing. It is a Mediterranean old recipe where she warms in her palms until it is as pliable as Taffy, then she applies it in deft rolling strokes on the specific area. The whole process took less than 10 minutes. Voila - happy! I don't have any other spas to compare my experience in Brazilian waxing. However, I know for sure I will not go anywhere else but Aida Spa. She has A LOT of clients. I didn't have a problem making a reservation as I made one two weeks in advance. I have seen her calendar and I highly recommend that you call more than one week in advance. She is also very accommodating! read more

Whew, it was an intense experience, lol. Aida was very discreet and non judgemental. She's sweet, friendly, and QUICK! Others have mentioned she uses a different type of wax which reminds me of taffy. When she applies the wax it hurts like a son of a beach b/c it pulls the hair upon the application. One thing that did annoy me was she kept saying "Shhh", "Stop being a baby"....things to that affect. Ok, s'cuze me you're ripping hair out of my Vageena...it F'ing HURTS! I wasn't loud but yes after a few rips there was deep breathing or an "oh my god". Earlier this summer, I was in from Dallas to visit my best friend who had just moved to the D.C. area. She asked me to meet her at Aida Spa to start our girls day because she was getting waxed. I'd done an "at home" job just before my trip so, I timed my arrival to walk in and out as soon as my friend's service was finished. As she was paying, Aida came out and we chatted briefly. Before I knew it, I was on a table and she was telling me about the wax product she makes. She billed it as a clean up of my "at home" job, but a few short minutes later I was a new woman! I jokingly told her that my husband was going to have to ask for ID later that evening. Needless to say, Aida is a doll and her technique is AMAZING!!!! There was hardly any pain--and I'm a wuss. As I sit here typing this review, I've just booked another flight to D.C. Is it to see my bestie and her family, or is it to see Aida?!?!!! A quick update on the magic of Aida. I have continued to see her for monthly full leg and Brazilian waxing. I wouldn't go to anyone else, that would be crazy. And I have to say she practically feels like an old friend that I have known forever. When you wax regularly even the sensitive areas don't hurt anymore, which means she gets busy waxing, and we get busy chatting, and before I know it, perfect legs, and smooth woohoo! I've seen other reviewers refer to Aida as brisk, or not understanding, and in my personal opinion that is just not true. I find her to be one of the most warm, and loving individuals I've ever had the pleasure to meet. I think, it is more that waxing, especially for first timers, is painful no doubt, and the only way to get through the pain of that first time, is to keep moving. I have been to a few technicians who wax slowly, and I would sort of rather have my fingernails pulled off of my fingers with pliers. Also, once the technician stops to commiserate, you're probably not going to follow through. However, once you get that first time over with, it's pretty much smooth sailing from there. One more thing....Aida knows that I have been battling an illness for the last year, and those times I came in when I was sick, and clearly not at my best, she comforted me, told family stories to take my mind off of my troubles, and gave me good advice. Oh, I love Aida. I love her a lot. I just moved to the NOVA region about a month ago and spent two weeks of that in Italy. You know what is one of the hardest parts about moving? Finding new people to do your dirty work. By dirty work, I obviously mean brazilians, cause let's be real, getting someone you trust down there with hot wax on your lady bits is a hassle. Luckily for me, a friend pointed me to Aida and stated that she'd been seeing her for seven (!) years. I trust that kind of commitment. Aida, first of all, is absolutely charming. She's a friendly Frenchwoman which seems like a complete oxymoron but suits her to a tee. She's jovial and chats the entire time and I felt like I had known her a year within the first five minutes. Onto the waxing! Aida uses a mix of her own homemade wax and sugaring to do a brazilian. This combination (wax to clean at first, the intense stuff with the sugaring) led to one of the quickest and least painful waxes I've ever had. Also: I have never had a waxer that hasn't missed a few stragglers. Aida is thorough and my skin is perfectly bare with zero irritation. Three cheers all around! I used to get brazilians every few months until my regular esthetician relocated. I am happy to report that I have found my new go-to lady! Aida is easy to talk to and comfortable to be around. I was in and out in 15 minutes and 5 of those minutes were just chit chat and hugging it out as I left. She's super efficient, cost effective, and super nice. You can tell she loves what she does cuz she makes her own, all natural wax! There is plenty of metered parking in front of the store and I now know it will only cost me a quarter for all my future visits. She did a remarkable job leaving me bare from front to back. Newbie here! I had an appointment yesterday afternoon with Aida for my first Brazilian and it was an interesting experience...in a good way! Parking was not an issue and the location was easy to find. She was very nice and made me feel comfortable by making small talk with me. I needed something to distract me from what was actually taking place. The entire process took maybe 20 minutes and honestly, I didn't even know she started! There were probably one or two spots where I actually cussed out loud, but laughter followed =) She leaves no wax residue which some places can be really careless about. I had no swelling, no irritation (I did take two Advil 30 minutes before my appointment). When I got home I went to investigate to see if she really did get all the strays that could have been missed...nope...nothing. Bare as a babies bottom and smooth as silk ladies! I'll definitely make this a routine. If you are a first timer, take a risk! Aida is definitely worth the money. Oh! And she books about a week in advance, so make sure you grow it out pretty well so she can make you look zestfully clean =) read more

I've had many brazilian waxes in my 27 years. But this one was the best! Aida is a sweet heart. She squeezed me in this afternoon. She was fast and gentle but also quite thorough. I like her technique!!! I've never had a wax like this one before. It's like a ball of sugar wax she rolls over your skin and continuously lifts up and puts back down again. Her method is so different than what I've had in the past, but it results in the best wax I've had. She makes you completely comfortable during the process and doesn't waste any time. I've never been in there longer than 15 or so minutes and always come out with great results....most importantly without any wax residue for hours. My skin is a little sensitive so I still get a little redness and irritation (I use Bliss Ingrown Eliminating Pads too), but it has noticeably become less and less each time. After reading all the great reviews on here, I decided to make an appointment for a full leg wax - my first ever. I showed up a few minutes late because I had trouble finding parking - but she was still busy with a previous appointment, so it was okay. I'd say my appointment started 15 mins later than scheduled. As previous reviewers posted, there is not much privacy in this salon, so you can hear any conversations going on if you are sitting waiting. Also, Aida is the only person who works here, so she stops what she is doing to answer the phone, greet customers, etc... As for the waxing itself, I was disappointed. It hurt, A LOT (no big surprise there). She first went over my legs with regular wax, then did a "polishing wax" with her own formula. When I called to make the appointment, she said "the longer the leg hair, the better", so I grew it out for two weeks prior (eek! needless to say I didn't wear shorts). I'm not sure if it was too long or what, but when I got home I noticed there was still hair. It had not been pulled from my leg, it had only been broken off! I ended up having to shave anyway after all that pain! After paying almost $100 and seeing such poor results, I can't ever see myself going back. This was my first wax, so I Googled things first to find out if these were good results or not - def not!! Aida herself is very friendly and holds a good conversation throughout the process to keep your mind off the pain, so I am really disappointed I won't be returning. Also, she prefers cash.
