Throughout that time, I had to initiate contact to get updates, and I only received my settlement check on July 31, 2025, after personally following up. While the attorney fee was 40% of the $20,000 settlement, there were also nearly $3,000 in legal costs and over $5,600 in medical expenses deducted. In the end, I received just $3,376.88 -- less than 17% of the total recovery. From a client's perspective, it felt like the majority of the settlement was gone before I saw anything. That was incredibly frustrating, especially given the time it took to resolve the case. In my personal opinion, this was the worst legal experience I've ever had. Mr Cox is an elder law attorney. We have a few dollars in the bank, not much but some. My husband was concerned that if he ended up in long term care the nursing home would take our money plus my husbands SSI and I would be left with only my SSI to live on. Me Cox said his retainer was $1000. I wrote the check 7 months ago. Mr Cox said he would take care of protecting our money and get my husband on Cal Med. After numerous phone calls leaving messages and an e mail Mr Cox picked up the phone. I explained my concerns and ask where he was on our matter. He said "frankly I put U on the back burner ". He said he would send me some paperwork. He did not. To make a long story short my husband finally got a hold of him and asked for our money back. He sent us a bill for $340 for research done and then a check for $660. I called and ask for the $340 back as well. Whatever research he did did not benefit us. Why should we pay for him to research something that he will perhaps use on another client. It saddens me that Philip Cox would take advantage of the elder and disabled. Shame on him. Seven months later no help at all and he kept part of the money.
