They also offered to replace our "stack pipe" - drain pipe from upstairs fixtures - for $14K! Why? Because of a leak at the bottom of the stack in the basement. To be fair, though outrageously expensive, they have done decent work for us in the past.

Air Systems Mechanical has cost me over 1000 hours of sleep. I hired them to install a brand new top of the line heater 3 years ago and there have been noise and vibration issues since the day it was installed. The equipment has been blamed from the beginning. They tried to solve the problem for around a year and made no progress. I got a call from Sam the owner and he basically told me to take my business elsewhere. I brought up online reviews and he agreed to continue troubleshooting. Various other steps were tried with no success. Trane sent a field rep and an engineer to check the equipment and even replaced the outdoor unit. The noise and vibration remained. Around the 3 year mark Air Systems Mechanical decided to walk away and leave it as my problem. In my last phone call with Sam he called me a difficult consumer, told me not to bother him anymore, and hung up on me. I was left with two apparent but equally unacceptable options. I could either learn to live with very little sleep in the winter or trash the system I just finished paying off and buy something else. I scoured the internet looking for a third option. Finally I came across an installation manual for the unit posted by a HVAC company in Texas. I noticed several discrepancies between the manual and the actual install. I emailed Sam and his service manager to let them know and offered to remove my negative reviews if they could rectify the situation. My email was ignored and used against me in one of their replies saying something about "giving into my demands". Next I posted excerpts from the install manual and what I found with the actual install. In attempting to refute me online and telling me everything that they had done correctly they unwittingly led me to what I believe is the root of the problem. The PVC pipe that runs through the concrete block to connect the outdoor and indoor unit is completely loose in the wall. They claim it was sealed with mortar and silicone when the unit was installed. I have provided pictures and it is obvious this was not done. It looks like the original sealant from when the house was built 30 years ago with big gaps between the PVC and concrete. I now know this is what is referred to as system isolation. It is explicitly stated in the installation manual that this needs to be done properly to alleviate sound and vibration transmission. I am confident correcting this will solve the problem. I will update once I know for sure. Air Systems Mechanical has responded to all my posts with lists of reasons why the noise and vibration issues are not their fault. What they have not done is addressed the lack of proper system isolation (as described in the manual) and explained why the PVC (as shown in the pictures) was not secured and sealed correctly when the system was installed. At this point any response from them other than an apology and an offer to rectify this is just further evidence of how far they are willing to go to shirk responsibility and try to cover up their mistake. All the employees I worked with at Air Systems Mechanical were extremely friendly and professional. They were so focused on a system issue I can almost forgive them overlooking this installation issue. The way however I have been treated by Sam the owner is inexcusable. read more

In December of 2016, I was in need of a new heat pump system for my home and simply went looking for HVAC contractors on the internet to obtain bids. I had 4 contractors come and submit bids. After listening to their presentations, only 1 stood out and the bid was not the only deciding factor. Air Systems Mechanical laid out 3 choices or levels of efficiency and the necessary equipment to make my home comfortable. They were very knowledgeable, professional, courteous and timely. Any time I call I am able to speak to a person or get a call back in a short period of time. My first experience was having a technician work on my heating system and I was pleased. Always excellent service! We have been dealing with Air Systems for several years now and they are very professional. We've gotten a new heat pump, boiler, and tankless hot water system from Air Systems. People have seen the work they did on the boiler and the tankless hot water system and comment on how neat of work they did installing it. Everything they do is explained to you. We purchase the service where they come twice a year to make sure everything is in working order. It is worth the peace of mind knowing everything is in good shape for the season. read more

After several nights without heat, a technician finally came out and diagnosed that two of the heating elements were not turning on. Instead of properly fixing the issue, he bypassed wires to the motor and charged me around $200. As soon as he left, my circuit breaker started tripping repeatedly. When I called them back, instead of correcting the wiring they recommended that I upgrade my breaker to a higher amp. I never had breaker issues before their technician modified the system. Because I still had no heat, I had to buy space heaters just to keep my small home warm, which caused my electric bill to jump to $776. I tried multiple times to speak with a supervisor named Jim, but every time I called I was told he was not available and would call back. Weeks later, I still never received a call. I finally had to hire another HVAC company to fix the problem, and they were shocked by how the system had been wired. If this is how they treat a customer who spent thousands of dollars on a system that was still under warranty, I cannot recommend them to anyone.

I was sent to voicemail when I contacted Ziegler, so I hung up and called Knoechel. (I called Ziegler first because I have an American Standard AC unit, and based on Zieglers website, it appeared that American Standard was a preferred brand of theirs/they may specialize in. Whereas Lennox appears to be the preferred brand at Knoechel. - my thought process was, if I was going to need a replacement, then I'd want an American Standard, hence Ziegler was my first call). Spoke with a woman who answers incoming calls for Knoechel, who took all of my information (contact info and description of the problem) and informed me that I'd receive a call back shortly. 30 minutes later I received a call from one of their techs who then arrived at my house less than 10 minutes later (I am local in Zelienople, where they are headquartered). Within an hour my AC was running normally again without any attempts to upsell/oversell. (Thorough cleaning of AC coils on the outside unit, replacement of dual capacitor, and temperature checks - about an hours worth of work, $177) All that work PLUS the expediency in response time came at a price that was in line with a competitor a family member had used last week located in Pittsburgh (which was too far away to service my house in Zelie). Without question, I'd recommend Knoechel!

He ran the serial number and saw the unit was 17 years old, diagnosed that I had an issue with the compressor which was probably about to die, and should likely start comparison shopping for a new unit. He offered to send a salesman out the next day to take a better look at the overall job that would need to be done and provide an estimate; his initial ballpark was anywhere between $6,000 and $9,000. The salesman came out promptly the next day and was very professional and well-informed, having previously been in the field himself. He took his time explaining and provided estimates for two possible units, one under 6000, one under 7000. He sent me all electronic paperwork related to the estimate on the spot; again, very professional. At the end of the day I would have been extremely comfortable going with them to replace the unit, which did end up dying completely within the next day, but ended up getting my socks knocked off with a lower quote from another AC company I've used in the past for the same, lower end unit. That said, I would not hesitate to recommend and use this company and its technicians in the future. Thank you for the excellent and quick service.
