Cajón Grilled Chicken and Sweet Potato Fries

Wonderful hidden in plain sight gem! I have visited Cleveland MS over 10 times and always seen this restaurant, but never knew it was a restaurant. So I was on my way back to Cali on my birthday and was going to have lunch with a friend who lives there. She gave me a few choices, being I had never been here, I chose the Airport Grocery. Dang, I forgot to ask for free birthday dessert! The desserts in the window display looked sumptuous, but I didn't try. I arrive first and was quickly greeted and seated. My friend came about 3 minutes later and we began catching up. Unfortunately no one came to our table to take my drink order or anything for more than 5 minutes. We eventually flagged down a waitress who was attending to another customer who mind you had come in after me and asked her who our server was. She said she would get us someone. When our server finally came she was the sweetest thing. I don't know what the problem was, but she made us feel special and she was very attentive. From that point on there were no issues. I asked her what was good at the restaurant she recommended a few things and we both decided on the grilled chicken sandwich with the sweet potato fries. Both of them were absolutely delicious, the seasoning on the grilled chicken was delightful, it was a Cajun seasoning, not too spicy, but just right.

I have been here several times. It has gotten real slow since the last time I reviewed it. The food is great -when you finally receive it. I like to order their hot tamales or BBQ sandwich here. Both are delicious. However, the customer service has gone down here. They are slow. Once, I got up to pay. To when do this, you walk up front to the counter and pay. The cashier was near the bar talking to the manager or someone and she saw me. But, she just looked at me and kept talking or listening to her manager. In fact, she looked at me several times. She made me stand at cash register for probably 10 to 15 minutes before she finally came. Then, she was real slow about ringing me up. There have been other instances of slow service here but this was not acceptable. Thus, 5 stars to 3 stars. The only reason, they are getting 3 stars is because the food is good when you receive it. Also, my waitress at the last visit was very unprofessional at being a waitress. She does not know how to talk to people. She didn't check back on me either after delivering my order. Anyway, I will come back here but, when I do, I will not be in a hurry because I know it will take a long time.

Hot Tamale Trail - Stop #10/12 I came for the tamales... almost didn't stop due to the name -Glad I did! Very interesting inside the restaurant. Stuff everywhere... Good meat ratio, well spiced - Not too hot. Extra cumin? Yes tied for #1 tamale.

Sweet potato fries with a old school cheese burger.

This is better food than many big city restaurants costing twice as much. The ambiance is irresistible. And the fried shrimp! Perfection!

The bartender did not look at us once and when my brother asked if he had any recommendations or a favorite, he responded "no" without even looking up. When I asked for 2 drinks I was told they were out which was fine, but then I asked what they did have and was told, "look if it has a cap on it". The Growler was something my family was looking forward to since they were coming for the first time from Connecticut and had heard good things, but the bartender made it seem like we weren't wanted there. I did not end up getting a drink which was an unfortunate way to end my graduation night.

I've been to The Growler quite a few times and have always had a great experience. I decided to swing in this week while back in town and it really held up. The staff working the bar are consistently awesome - they're personable, quick, and extremely helpful. The beer is always well poured. Their food is always great for the atmosphere. Some places tend to get lazy when serving bar food, but that is not the case for The Growler. There is so much seating available if you are planning to hang out with friends, and they have a few tvs and games available for use. It is somehow also a great spot for working - I have typed many, many papers here and have somehow never been too distracted despite this place often being filled with groups of people.

It was later in the evening, and I wasn't sure how many places would still be open that late elsewhere in the state, so stopping in such an iconic college town felt like the right move. Unfortunately for me--but probably great for business--it happened to be a home game for Ole Miss Rebels baseball, so the entire area was packed. I tried a few places before finally managing to grab a single seat at the very end of the bar at Back 9. The atmosphere was immediately fun and energetic. Between the sports simulators and TVs broadcasting games throughout the space, it felt exactly like the kind of lively college-town sports bar you'd hope to stumble into on a busy game night. The staff was clearly stretched thin because of the crowd, so I don't hold the slower pacing against them. If anything, it reminded me how differently high-volume bars function from city to city. There are probably a few things college-town bars in general could learn from the efficiency of Nashville's Broadway spots, but that's more of an observation than a criticism of this restaurant specifically. The menu is exactly what you'd expect in the best way possible--handhelds, flatbreads, comfort food, and crowd-pleasing bar favorites. I ended up ordering the Chipping Cajun pasta, and honestly, it completely surprised me. The balance between the spice and cream sauce was excellent. The bell peppers, onion, and garlic added depth to the flavor while also giving the dish a nice variety of texture. The seafood was evenly cooked and genuinely delicious throughout. It actually reminded me of one of my favorite dishes back in Nashville at Darfons Restaurant & Lounge, which I definitely wasn't expecting from a busy college-town sports bar. Overall, Back 9 ended up being one of the highlights of my drive through Oxford. If you're passing through town, especially on a game weekend, it's absolutely worth stopping in and trying for yourself.
