We had a 2br/2 bath this week at AKA White House. Pros- The spaciousness and design touches of our room was great. Two nice sized bedrooms and a large little kitchen/dinning room/living room area. I'm thankful our kids had their own room and there was a nice place for us all to spend time outside of the bedroom area. We also parked our large suv in the hotel garage at $80 a night. You then take the garage elevator to the hotel lobby floor, then transfer to the hotel elevator. While the hotel serves no food, Panera bread is in the adjacent store front and there's lobster place across the street (very good lobster rolls). Thus, you don't have the convenience of an in-hotel restaurant, but you also don't get raked over the coals for in-hotel restaurant prices. Location - was terrific. Literally two blocks from the White House. There were rentable bikes and scooters virtually everywhere. There's also an official bike lane on the East side of the White House. From this area, you have a very easy ride to the national Mall and anything else you want to see. Kids loved the scooters, possibly more than all the sight seeing. Overall, we would stay here again. Downside: beds were very firm (think one step softer than laying on card board). No tissues; two garbage cans in the kitchen and no where else; layout of the master bedroom tv made no sense (was perpendicular to the bed). No maid service. No pool. Additionally, the ice maker is literally under lock and key behind the bar. You have to go to the front desk, wait for them to finish serving whatever customer they have, then follow them to the bar to get ice. Anything would be more convenient. We really liked staying here. We really appreciated the staff and accommodations at this hotel. It was set up like an apartment, and we had a two bedroom suite - it felt like a home away from home. Clean and equipped kitchen was great to have for a family saving some money on the road (15 minute walk to Whole Foods). The wifi wasn't fast (sub-1mbps much of the time, and flittering in and out) or sufficient for the physical space, but three TVs (one in each room) w good cable access made things comfortable in other ways. The beds were comfy (the bigger bed was for some reason not in the room with the bathroom attached) and the rooms were dark enough for comfortable sleep. All in all, this was a good room at a fairly reasonable price within a block of the White House. It works! We will probably return. read more

All 3 rooms were on different floors. The front desk lady was beyond rude when I said that I had requested the rooms close to each other. She told me they were sold out and I could take it or leave it. Not oh I am sorry. Take it or leave it. When we asked later that night for recommendation for a place to eat she acted like we were putting her out. Never again. Our stay was great. Staff was super friendly, accommodating, knowledgeable and helpful. The room was clean and it was nice to have extra room to hang out rather than being cramped in a one room hotel room. It would have been nice to have extra blankets, towels and washcloths without having to ask, but that's not a huge deal. Be prepared to pay a hefty price for parking, but what can you expect with DC parking prices. Convenient to the metro and lots of places to eat, drink and hang out nearby. Giving it four stars but it's more like 3.5 for me. The thing that really dragged it down for me was noise. I stayed in 907 which is 9th floor, rear of building overlooking the alley shared by two other buildings. I assume it's because of the age of the building but these units are not sound proofed in any way, whether it be walls or windows. I'm not a particularly light sleeper, but I was often woken up by the elevators as they seem to have people going up and down at nearly all hours of the day, and 907 is behind the elevator shafts. There are certain units which would be further away so perhaps that's something to ask for. Next up, same issue, being woken up by sound coming from the alley behind the place. A recycle truck decided to pick up a dumpster full of glass bottles (from the sound of it) at 4am one day, other vehicles, horns, etc. coming from the alley were a regular bother. If you have ear plugs or perhaps a white noise generator on your phone, that may help you. The aspects I really liked were location, pricing, amenities, most of the staff. Location; it's two blocks from the White House. There's no BS resort fee, which I suppose makes sense given it's not a 'resort', but no hidden fees, just tax. They often have a sizable government discount off the normal rates if that's applicable to you. These are actual apartments, so you get a kitchen with stove, oven, fridge, dishwasher, microwave, silverware, pots/pans, etc. Here's something really cool; you get a real TV with a real Xfinity cable box; not one of those ridiculous hotel TV's where every button press is an exercise in frustration waiting five seconds for the display to respond. There's a cable modem, so connect all the devices you want, no fee, no fee per device, no limits. Since it is an apartment, it's important to note there's a water heater in the unit, so if you're used to taking a limitless hot shower at your hotel's expense, that won't work. Also, each unit has its own a/c, just like an apartment, so it turns on and off like a normal a/c, not one of those constantly running units like a regular hotel. There's a business center where you can print things, free of charge. There's a small gym. They do have bell service so you can check bags in and out if you need to come and go before or after your room is available or has been returned. The staff at the front desk were super nice every time I interacted with them. read more

Apartment/condo style living with high ceilings and somewhat contemporary in-room lighting/dark hardwood floor/4-seat dining table/customary sofa. Accommodation: Stayed in both a one and two bedroom suite. Beds are clean with comfortable mattress and pillows. Once actual apartments, the rooms are very spacious and have most features from home - kitchen (stove, oven, dishwasher [sample size dishwasher soap provided], dishes, hot/cold cups, utensils, microwave and full size fridge + freezer, baking sheet, glass and pots/pans) and washer/dryer (sample size detergent for 1 load provided). Amenities: Movie theater (around 10 recliners) and large screen with great audio easily manipulated through touch screen controls at corner unit. Door can be closed for privacy. There's an adult lounge only active during the week - offering coffee and cocktails - I didn't participate so not entirely sure what else they may offer. Small conference room with TV and 4 iMac computers with printer (complimentary print jobs). Direct/free internet access. Gym contains cardio machines and free weights. Both the business and gym require card entry. Terrace upstairs - better for warmer weather or to experience nice city views. Parking: Available onsite for a fee. There's also metered street parking which are free on weekends. Staff: Those that we encountered at the front desk were very friendly, professional and helpful. You may leave your bags prior to check in/check out if required. Price: Reasonable considering the square footage (800 sq. ft. or more) and amenities/suites. Depending on the day, price ranges from $160-$200/night. Best to book during the holiday or promotion, when prices could be as low as $130-$150 (without taxes). Surrounding local retailers/etc/good variety for a short walk/on same block/one block away: Cafes: Au Bon Pain, Starbucks, Panera Bread (next door), Alfa Pie House (has breakfast + lunch options), Compass Coffee, Le Pain Quotidien, Teaism, Peet's Coffee, Pret A Manger and McDonald's. Lunch/dinner: Founding Farmers, Custom Fuel Pizza + Roti Mediterranean Grill. Nearest 24 hour convenience store: 7-11. On 19th street (hotel is on 17th), there's a Wawa (contains seating and fairly brand new) Note: I would return to this hotel only for extended stays or with a family of kids/larger group. *Review for hotel bar* I came to the AKA hotel bar after reading Joanna M's review about their Old Fashioned being the best in the city. Although very good, I felt that taking into consideration having been to many of the other highly recommended cocktail bars in the city, the AKA doesn't make them the *best*. Why the five stars though? The extensive cocktail list, the amazing service, and just the beautiful lobby! Most of the drinks on the cocktail list range from $12 and up, which is expected. I also love how low key the AKA is. If I don't feel like being bothered, I'll just hop the metro to Farragut West and come here for a quiet drink. First time stayed here great. Second time nightmare. No shades on certain windows in living room of "platinum suite". Can look right next door into that suite. Asked for a quiet room, got one on the busy street side, on a low floor. Like being on the street with all the noise. Tried to switch rooms. 2nd one bad as well, just two floors up. No go. Then Was taken to and nearly entered an occupied room, after trying to stop the person. Flying all day, no manager, and just gave up a little after 11. Super disappointing and given a web email to contact. Unusable room. Privacy should be a minimum expectation. No shades on windows facing buildings and streets just not normal. Management responded. Ignored the fact that the misinformation I was given came from front desk, which tried, with the front desk person's key to get me into an occupied room. The front desk insisted that a room with no drapes looking into another suite with living and kitchen visible from neighboring office buildings was a "guest accommodation." No manager on-site and only an after hours (after 9 PM and told not until 11 a.m. the next day) to email to lodge complaints, which never responded. Management responded the next day, but by that time had to work and line up place to stay because they at first said they could not accommodate basic privacy and then management said front desk misunderstood. As someone who travels to DC about twice a month and was pleased the first time I stayed at this established, I was surprised at both the accommodations and management's parsing of words responses. Here are the pictures of looking directly into the suite next door. Also, always lock the doors. Management did not check the front desk or entry key logs before assuming I had used a key front desk gave me. It was actually the front desk that tried to access an occupied room with me trying to stop her (I could hear the woman's voice inside). I posted pics in the last review. read more

My stay was extremely disappointing to say the least. Not only was it dirty, but it was also a safety hazard. When I attempted to make a cup of coffee, there was an actual large hole at the bottom edge of the glass carafe of the coffee machine. It was chipped badly and the glass shards could have easily hurt someone. How could this have been missed? On top of that, there was a red stain on the additional blanket provided in the closet. To top everything off, there was a huge cigarette burn (the size of a large egg) on the leather headboard of the bed.. that is just absolutely unacceptable. I also had to wake up to the obnoxiously loud noises of garbage trucks.. conveniently directly outside my window. Paint is chipping around the rooms and there are scuff marks all over the walls.. I'm not sure what kind of business is being ran here. When being checked out on my last day of stay, I began to explain my unfortunate situation to the gentleman at the front desk. I asked if the supervisor was in and the on duty manager was identified as the gentleman standing next to him. He was close enough to overhear this conversation yet took no action to speak to us or to attempt to remedy our horrific stay. I decided to not waste my breath since management obviously did not seem to care about the level of customer service and experience at this hotel. I hope upper management takes my feedback seriously and attempt to reach out to me and make this right because that is what I'm looking for. read more

We booked one of the suite with 2 bedrooms and one living room. The master bedroom has a king bed and its own bathroom. The other bedroom is much smaller with a twin bed. The mattress in this bed needs immediate replacement. It has like a mountain shape so you fell on the side. The suite is very clean and has a washer and drier, very convenient. They even have you find a dose of washing powder on the washer. I liked that. The negative part, unacceptable for a hotel of this category, is that one of the bathrobes had a big blood stain. This is described as a luxury hotel and certainly priced as one. I must say I'm rather disappointed and would rather stay at a Home2suites! The bed is extremely hard and uncomfortable. The rooms have glass windows that offer no privacy and there were no mirrors in the bedroom nor a safe available for your valuables. It's a suite but both rooms and beds are not the same size (I was left with the smaller room with a separate bathroom as I arrived second). No desk in the bedroom and no overhead lighting to do work so you would have to use the desk in the kitchen. No fan in the bathroom and no blow dryer. Water also never got warm. It was the coldest shower of my life! There was also no iron available. The garage also does not have 24 hour access so at times you're left to walk or Uber once you've parked. Overall for the price I was left quite unimpressed (and cheaper hotels at least have full breakfast options and coffee) read more

You're paying a pretty penny for square footage when in reality you probably won't spend enough time in when you're checking out DC. Marble lobby is the poshest aspect of your stay, and the only real benefit I see is the proximity to tourist hot spots. Moderate kitchenette, small bathrooms, glass-paneled bedrooms to balance privacy and lighting. Living room decor had nicer lamps than furniture-- the latter was a matching set covered in uncomfortable fabric, plus thin pillows. Broad views are of surrounding buildings, and you have lateral glimpses into your neighbors' window nooks. Room-specific wi-fi is functional. Fitness center is nice, and bar service varies. Proponents of Voss still bottled water. read more

We stayed recently at AKA. It's was clean, spacious and nice. The bath tubs are very high. My husband and I both have hip replacements. He did ok getting in I could not. When booking this unit we had no idea it would be like this. We tried everything to get me in the tub. At the time my husband made the arrangements there were no handicap units. But the front desk when we checked said all the tubs were the same way and if we wanted to move to a handicap unit it would be $250.00 dollars more a night. They did not really try to help us. We went back later that evening, we had a handicap chair waiting in the room. Tried everything way with the help of my husband was able to get in the tub. It should not have to be that way for the handicap. The tub is also very slippery. Even if it's not a handicap a short person also needs the bars to help them in. Also for the elderly it not a good fit. We also had other family members staying in other units they complained about the tubs being too high. We also had to ask for several items the unit should of had - extra towels - coffee. Being in Washington was an experience! Being with family was great but having to worry about bathing should not have to be that way. Also every night we would ask the front desk there was a different person. So we had to explain the situation with no result. If your handicap check out the unit first or make sure you have a handicap unit. They are not very sensitive to your disabilities. read more

Let's just get to the point. First of all they don't have room service so ordering food was out. Second they told me they dont have a kitchen so that meant no breakfast. That is the minimum most guest look for. Finally, they don't clean your bathroom unless you are saying more than seven days. Well I was there five days and around day three and working out at the provided gym the ring around the tub was beyond noticable for housekeeping to do something about it. I stayed here with my family (3 other people) for a week. Its proximity to downtown DC is perfect, and it was so great to not have to drive to all of the tourist sites. We try to stay at apartment-style places like this so that we don't have to eat out as much, and it really worked this time around. The kitchen is fully-stocked (although there were no bowls...weird...). Beds are super comfy, in my opinion. Only thing I didn't like was that the housekeeping service (which comes by once a week, awesome) only left one toilet paper roll in each bathroom, and one shampoo. If your customers are spending a week at your hotel, you need to give them more toilet paper. Having to go down to the front desk every couple of days was really unnecessary. Other than that, a great place to stay. I'd recommend it to anyone. read more

I stayed here for two weeks and have mixed feelings about this place. The flats are roomy, very clean, well decorated, and comfortable. Continental breakfast is served Monday through Friday but is nothing more than muffins, oatmeal, and coffee. It's not bad but don't come expecting the works. Internet is free and fast, each room with its own wireless router. There is a small gym on the first floor but if you are an avid weight lifter, you might to find a local location of the gym you are a member of as the dumbbells only go up to 27.5 lbs. The staff is nice and welcoming but seems to be shy in numbers. There is usually just one person sitting at the front counter which leads me to believe they have a very small support staff. Here are my only two real complaints. 1. The elevators in this building are incredibly loud. My room was not very close to the elevators and they were so loud that they woke me up every week day when everyone was leaving for work. You can hear the zooming up and down through the walls. I should note that none of the walls to my flat were connected to the elevators. 2. My flat was at the back of the building where it faced tall office buildings. Privacy is not the issue here, it's the noise coming from the workers below. If the garbage man wasn't causing a ruckus, which echoed through surrounding buildings, or the service workers yelling , then it was the 4, yes 4 jack hammers breaking concrete on the ground below. This was incredibly loud! I know this is not a regular occurrence, I would just advise you to get a flat that is facing the street and not the buildings in the rear. read more

I have just ended a phone call with the manager Luis and let me tell you how ridiculous the experience was. I had a reservation (he says 2) I never made the second one??? that I need to cancel due to recent events of flooding and dealing with the aftermath of mudslides. I am two hours short (Eastern time) I live in California of canceling my reservation and he is going to charge me for both of the rooms 1/2 of the fee. First of all I didn't make two reservations and second of all I have canceled 72 hours prior according to my time zone. Nowhere does it say that I have to cancel 72 hours prior Eastern Time Zone. Shame on you Luis not a good way to run a business. You will not win because the receipt does not indicate one must cancel 72 hours prior Eastern Time Zone. read more

I stayed here for about a month and I really don't know why anyone would choose to stay at a hotel with only 200sq feet when they can get an apartment here for the same daily rate and an extra 1000sq feet to spare. Breakfast included-(excluding weekends) The decoration is very modern and includes all the amenities you would want and fully stocked kitchen. The best part is having a washer/dryer in the unit. My main concern was having a window in the bedroom and April (the mgr) upgraded me for the same rate to a 2 bedroom. It was great! I also recommended the place to a friend who will be staying there for 4 months-He was upgraded to a 2 bedroom as well, including parking. The only problem I had with this place was the lack of water pressure in the shower. It shouldn't be a big problem for short stays or for men but after a month I was ready to leave. I still give them 5 stars b/c they were very accomodating and location was great. Close to Red/Blue/Orange lines and the best nightime jogging next to the White House and the monuments, which is always safe with all the SS agents. read more

Beautiful long-stay residence. I have stayed here with my dad when he was in town for business, and I have always been blown away by how great and clean the residence is. First, the kitchen is a great thing to have. It has an actual kitchen, compared to the pretty useless college dorm-sized fridges most hotels have. Second, there are SO many TVs. I've stayed in the 2 bedroom residences, and there are 3 large, HDTVs. Like. there were just 2 of us and 3 TVs. I dont think my dad ever turned on his TV. This place is also close to many of the sights (great!) and to two major metro stops (greater!). You also have the World Bank right next door, which is just a cool feeling. Founding Farmers (great restaurant that I have also reviewed) is just 2 blocks away. If you're going to be in DC for a while and want something much nicer than a hotel, I highly recommend AKA. read more

I recently went to a 5 day conference in D. C. After work each day I went sight-seeing. It was perfect to come back to this room after a full day of walking and being busy. Laundry facilities in your room is unheard of. I told everyone at my conference about it and they couldn't believe all the amenities. Someone came in and washed my dishes each day, emptied trash, and made my bed. I am going back to D. C. in November and just booked my room there again because I can't imagine staying somewhere else now. It would be very claustrophobic. Another great part is you can cook in your room! Walk to Whole Foods, .5 miles away. The Farragut West Metro is right around the corner. read more

This is a fantastic alternative to staying at a hotel during a long term visit. The staff is uniformly kind and helpful at all hours. The rooms are spacious with a walk-in closet and full bathroom. A guest bathroom, kitchen with new appliances and washer and dryer make it easy to feel at home if you are visiting DC for a short time. I spent two weeks at this hotel while traveling for business in the DC metro area. As another reviewer here writes: "For every good thing, there seemed to be a negative." I couldn't agree more. The hotel is located in the downtown business district which slows to a near silent halt on the weekends. They may be a positive for some people and a negative for others. It is, however, located within walking distance to two metro stations. Those looking for close proximity of restaurants and shopping will be disappointed. The staff at the hotel was extremely friendly. However, that quality was coupled with the fact that they were almost completely incompetent. I do not mean to say that in an insulting manner, nor to imply that they were deliberately lazy or intellectually incapable of performing the tasks required of them. It seems instead that they were either too overloaded with responsibilities or too understaffed to perform their essential duties effectively. I called the front desk to cancel housekeeping service, only to have maids ring the doorbell at my room twice that same day in both the morning and the afternoon, this despite the presence of a "do not disturb" sign on the doorknob. I called the front desk to extend my stay, and they said they would confirm my reservation. They never returned my call. Requests for additional supplies were either unmet or poorly executed. A request for more soap and blankets resulted in the delivery of a thin bedspread and small bar of soap. I've read other Yelp reviews that state how the front desk staff maintained intense focus on their computer screens during interactions. This is true. In fact, it was not uncommon for me to leave very early in the morning and return very late at night to see two staff members silently staring at the screens (creepy.) The apartment I stayed in was nicely outfitted but obviously poorly maintained. The walls had several scuff marks and the kitchen and bathroom sinks clogged. Also there was an inordinate amount of black hair on the floor ( very gross.) The apartment also had a utility closet that lead to no where and cabinet space that was so high in the kitchen you need a ladder to reach it. Simply put, this is a boutique hotel in name only. While there are certainly worse hotels it's difficult to surmise this entire operation without using the phrase "half-assed." read more

STAY HERE. This is my favorite hotel in the US. I have stayed here numerous times -- both in a two-bedroom and a one-bedroom. The value for the quality is unbeatable. I almost don't want to write about how good this hotel is because it is such an affordable gem that I don't want it to become unaffordable but they deserve all of the business that they can get. Starting with the construction in this obviously refurbished building: everything is done well. If you are in the construction or interior design business you will appreciate it. The construction work is high quality. The furnishings are at- or above average for the price. The bed is comfortable. The linens are perfect. The pillows on the bed are sufficient and if you need more, there are more in the closet. The towels, while not my style, are plentiful. The soaps are of high quality. The bath robe fits a plus-size person. THERE ARE TWO BATHROOMS IN A ONE BEDROOM UNIT. This is really nice for a couple that needs extra space in the morning. The room is unbelievably spacious and the temperature is easily manageable. If you or a person you are with is a woman of a certain age and you need a reasonable temperature of a room, this is your place. read more

I checked into the AKA White House for a work retreat. I was very displeased with my stay. First, the check in process makes you feel like a criminal. They charge your card for the full stay the day you check in. Fine. Weird, but ok, not like I wasn't expecting to pay. Then they make a photocopy of your credit card and ID as if you are going to skip out on them. In this age of consumer fraud and rampant identity theft, I was very uncomfortable with this process. When asked when they would shred my information, the hotel desk person had no idea. Then they sent me to an outdated room with old carpet and cabinets. The following morning, their housekeeping staff could be heard shouting down the hallway to each other as if guests aren't here for peace and quiet and to get work done. I had to poke my head out and ask if they could keep their voices down. I assume they didn't think the floor was that occupied but seriously? This is supposed to be a place of rest and relaxation as they advertise. I don't expect housekeeping staff to be playing around in the hallways like kids on a football field and need a guest to ask them to quiet down. They should know that that is not appropriate. Upon checking my billing statement on the day of checkout, I learned that instead of placing a hold, these jokers charged my credit card for the full $250 incidental fee. I went downstairs to ask for a reversal and they said upon checkout inspection, they would reverse the charge. What kind of incompetent mess is that? Any hotel in 2019 knows how to place a hold on a consumer's card for incidentals rather than place a full charge then reverse it. Why is that so difficult for the AKA? I will NEVER stay here again. Get ready to have to file a dispute with your bank if you stay here. read more

Stayed here with my boyfriend for our vacation and it was great! We got the one bedroom suite and the bed was huge. The room included two bathrooms, a guest bathroom and a main bathroom. There was also a kitchen and a small living room. The kitchen included all cooking utensils and plates/pots etc. Everything was very spacious and very nice. The parking garage was convenient as well. A really important pro of this hotel is its location. It's very close to most of the monuments, white house, china town as it is right in the middle of downtown Washington. WIFI was super fast as well. Hotel, room, main lobby and location were all very luxurious. EDIT: Shout out to the music they played via soundscape on the TV; A+ read more
