I don't know what the service model is at Akademia Brewing Company, but it seems to rely heavily on customers fending for themselves. We started at the bar, where I was ready to order a couple rounds--until the bartender made it very clear that even one drink was already a burden. I've seen DMV employees bring more warmth and enthusiasm. Undeterred, we moved to the patio, where the host sat us and a waiter promptly delivered menus... and then executed a flawless disappearing act. Not a quick check-in, not a "be right back," just gone like we imagined the whole interaction. At some point it stops being bad service and starts feeling like a social experiment: how long will people sit politely before realizing no one is coming? I'd love to comment on the food, but that would've required ordering it. If the goal is to make guests feel like an inconvenience from start to finish, mission accomplished. I visited on trivia night and the crowd was large. The dining room was packed so I sat at the bar. Kate was very prompt and I asked for a menu, again very prompt. Varied menu with a large range of food, from snacks to full dinners. I was torn between the mushroom Swiss burger and the brat with kraut so I asked Kate. She helped with the choice. Wasn't here to eat so can only comment on service, beer & vibe. I had to wait to be seated as the one person was checking someone out and nobody else offered to assist. I went for the bar because usually service is better at the bar, but that really wasn't the case either. I ordered a flight, drank them, and then had to wait around even longer for someone to ask me if I wanted anything else. Since it took so long I opted to close out and leave. Kind of wild because there weren't many people in there. It was pretty dark inside- no lights were on. They also told me the kitchen was closing despite it only being about 3pm. I found that odd. Others had ordered things I didn't see on the menu I was given, so I was unsure what they were ordering from. Turns out I had the brunch menu only. Awesome food, location and drinks! When we are near Athens, my husband and I make a point to make a trip to Akademia. Bartenders are always pleasant and love the overall atmosphere of the place. Akademia is a great spot, and I've never eaten anything there that wasn't very good. The wings with sriracha soy sauce were recommended by bartender. That sauce is delicious, and the 10 wings I received were large size. The Apollo Chicken Sandwich has pimento cheese and bacon, with the grilled chicken rather than fried. So good! Love the option to add Brussels sprouts as an alternative to fries; they are so delicious. Go on Wednesday and get your wings for $1/wing! Such a good deal. Finally, the beer is also really good. Somewhat unsurprising for a brewery but worth a comment anyway. I am a fan of sour beers, and I really enjoy the Country Fair. I've also had an old fashioned there, and they do a good job with the mixed drinks too. Go visit Akademia if you're in the area! read more

Would never think a college town brewery could serve up any other food besides burgers and fries but I was wrong. Chicken Marsala stood out to me so I took the chance and added a side of their Brussels sprouts. Great flavor, loved the crust on the Marsala and all of the caramelized onions. Brussels were nice and crispy. Mashed potatoes had good flavor but were cold. I'd come back anyways. No biggie. Came on a Tuesday night and it was packed due to trivia. Amazing meal! We popped in on a whim and were not disappointed. Started off with the fried pickles, which was a huge bowl of thinly sliced, crispy fried pickles. I had the bacon avocado burger - super juicy and full of flavor! - with the fried Brussel sprouts. The sprouts were phenomenal! Bartender Valencia brought us a complimentary nonalcoholic drink made with hop water that was SO delicious! Still working on the name for her drink. We will definitely be back! This was pure randomness checking out this brewery. Had come up this way for volunteer work with an organization that builds enclosures for chained up dogs, and they all had beers here afterwards. I've heard of this brewery previously, but it slipped my mind. It's in a weird spot. Unique in a sense bc it blends in to the suburban strip. You'd almost think it was just a small warehouse. Certainly lots of seating on the inside though, and plenty more on the outside. Check out their bathrooms, just saying. Drink enough to make yourself go pee, it'll be worth it. They serve pretty decent food here, so you can make it a brunch spot (they got brunch alcohol too, aside from the beer, in case you're wondering). I got the fish and chips (French fries, which were more like breakfast potatoes). The cod was huge and the jalapeño tartar sauce was excellent ... just didn't have a big kick to it. For my beers, I did the Blonde Ale (that was a big hit and took some home). It had a slight coffee smell and taste to it, which was unique. I also did a flight: sour, saison, lager and stout. The sour was very good, and was my second favorite out of them all. They are pretty heavy on the IPAs here, if that's your style, so didn't get too much to choose from. Overall, loved the atmosphere and the brewery. It's worth a trip to check out! read more

We have been going to this brewery pretty much since it opened. Always good beer of course with ample choice - brewed onsite. It seems the kitchen was much better in the earlier days. While the wings - we had lemon pepper - were excellent, the Brussel sprouts were overdone, nearly burnt. Mushroom flatbread was pretty good. However, the dish we all used to go for and loved - the wild mushroom pasta - seems to have morphed at least twice, not for the better. No longer a cream sauce and scarce on the wild mushrooms, instead it is made with Marsala wine, too much, rendering the dish way too sweet. Two of us ordered it but our servings were quite different. One drowned in sauce - the other a bit dry. Ambience is well - a brewery - hard to keep warm in the winter with the high ceilings. Service was fine - I noticed the waiter grabbed the food the moment it was ready, and brought it to the table promptly. Will return for the beer but may order just wings and flatbread. read more

I can't tell you how many times I've driven by Akademia and said I should check it out over the years. Now I'm kicking myself for not going sooner. I loved the beer selection, I love a good gose and a fruity sour and they had amazing selections. I didn't expect a whole lot from the food because breweries often disappoint on the food side. I went with a simple fish and chips and was shocked at how delicious the sauce was, I actually tried it accidentally after dropping a fry in it. My husband had the cerebus tripleta sandwich, pork shoulder. I sampled his and again the sauce was mind blowing. Way better than I had hoped and I will certainly be a regular here now. read more

Love popping into Akademia for a quick beer and appetizer! They have a solid menu - we love the pretzel and cheese curds. They have a great selection of beer as well - they have an assortment of IPAs, but we love hefs and stouts, and they have a few solid ones on tap. The Skål is a solid hef/wheat and the JavaKong is a great chocolate imperial pastry stout with zero bitterness. Another good dark is the MACcident/Cheers to 6 Years is considered a barley wine mixed stout. The servers are great too - Chontelle is awesome! read more

I attended a business presentation in the side room, and there was beer and food offered as well. After sampling a couple of the beers on offer, I had a glass of the Skal wheat ale, which I found to be very good. On leaving, I had the wagyu hot dog on a pretzel bun to go, with fries. The hot dog was good too, although why anyone would waste real wagyu beef on a dog I can't imagine. The fries were too greasy for my tastes. The food, beer and service is consistently good here. Fun events like trivia, poker, and food specials during the week. Everyone is very friendly. Probably the most impressive thing I've seen at any kind of bar in Athens is that they clean the taps before switching kegs. 2 months late in writing this post. I came here back in November 2021 on a Monday lunch. It wasn't busy. We sat outside since it was a beautiful day out. The only downside is that service lacked in the beginning of our dining. It took our server over 10 minutes just to greet us. However she did give us complimentary fries as an appetizer. We came in for a flight of beers and got the IQ IPA, Big Conversation, Shiver, and Hoprodisiac. My favorite is the Big Conversation, which is a berry color. It's a cherry blueberry sour. My least favorite is the Shiver, which was very light and reminiscent of some cheaper grocery store beers. The other 2 tasted pretty bright and were ok. All of them were decent. I really enjoy getting flights to try multiple different kinds. The interior is nice and very roomy. However, the place was pretty empty as there were only a couple people inside. Even though it was pretty empty, it still took us quite a while to get served. I would still recommend this place though, because it wasn't too long of a wait. What a fantastic brewery!!! I ended up here while visiting from Tampa and trying to kill time before checking into my Airbnb on a recent vacation. Great idea!!! I had never been to Athens before and driving from the Atlanta airport, there was not much on the way to my destination in regards to food or drinks. My friend and I found Akademia on Yelp and decided to stop for a rest. We came by on a Thursday just after the brewery opened at 11am and were pretty hungry after traveling all morning. They have a great menu with something for everybody! Our beertender Nate (shout out for being awesome!!!) helped us choose our beers and let us know that our food choices were solid. He was spot on. Everything was delicious!! They have a lunch special that I tried for $9 - half of a flatbread and a house salad. The salad was plentiful and the Buffalo Chicken Flatbread was outstanding! I also enjoyed a flight of beer which was around $11 and every beer was great. They have some killer sours. The brewery has plenty of seating and is a large open space. Great for business gatherings or just a night out with friends. They have a few TVs and kids are welcome. The bathrooms are really cool and designed with the brewery mindset. Don't be deceived by the exterior - it looks like an abandoned industrial space on a side road. If you're anywhere near the Athens area, be sure to make time and give this brewery a try. Okay..... now that I drank all of their beers let's leave an honest review..... drum roll please...... beer eh, take it or leave it it's typical brewery beer.... Not trying to offend them but nothing set them apart from the brew standpoint and my person experiences.... The food though..... let's talk their food... I was sooooo confused by the Greek theme and the not Greek menu, until I started with those crazy fries they have listed as the first appetizer! Y'all. Cuban meets Jersey disco fries.... Where has this combination been my whole life..... the cheese! Yum! The pork, double yum but that ham partnered with the rest!! BOOM BABY! That was the winner! The smokiness of that and the balance of sweetness with the grilled sweet onions someone was either drunk or high when developing this and I am all for it!!!!! We didn't even take a pic after first bite because WOW! Then we asked our waiter (which kind you was not only amazing I loved him in general he was full of life and cheer and excitement which made me wanna fine there even more). Anyway we asked him to choose between the buffalo chicken flat bread and the fish and chips..... y'all. He suggested fish and chips (we subbed for the mac and cheese since we ate fries already) and oh my lord almighty these fish and chips. First of all each "fish" is like a whole damn filet. But that FLAVOR and perfectness to every single bite and their lemon jalapeño tarter sauce! Wet dreams don't even taste that good!!!! Seriously though!
