I'm not a fan of this place, and I love gay bars. The atmosphere is very dark, dim and...musty? Sometimes there's a cover charge, and the idea of paying $5 to feel awkward is not my cup of tea. I don't think the drinks are anything special in terms of price, either. Fun fact: I had an ex sob on me here, a phenomenon we referred to thereafter as "beer tears". I came here after having dinner at The Kitchen which is right next door. After such a great dinner and such a high from next doors ambiance this place had it's work cut out I'll admit but my experience was very meh. I'm definitely not a Hipster nor am I trying to be but I personally am in no rush to make it back to Akbar. Some highlights from my visit: (1) The bartender was nice & she had HUGE BOOBS little bit of a pin up trying to go drag queen vibe about her? It was interesting. (2) Both bartenders working were unusually CLUMSY, they would spill drinks or break glasses and barely flinch as if it was a normal occurance (3) Creepers over here, Creepers over there! Be On the lOOk out (4) Calling All the Hip-staaas (5) Possible the drinks are strong here, but let's just say mine wasn't strong enough to offset everything going on.. (6) The BROKEN Juke box.... O M G... Ohh-Myy-Gawwd. It definitely isn't working like it did 25 years ago, they need to fix it or get rid of this thing. It played the same song 10 times in the 90 minutes I was there. I also paid money to pick a song and the one I went to choose the box wouldn't let me choose it.... Come here all the time, always fun and chill. The dim lights make it so friendly and there's also a dance floor on the back in which sometimes they throw cool shows. The host awesome parties too, sometimes during the day opening their pretty wide back open area. It's one of the most queer places in la, which btw I think it's really lacking of. I wasn't going to, but after careful consideration I do feel this needs to be labeled a D.A.D. (pt. 3): Having attended a fabulous bubbly-laden Silverlake Wine tasting, our next stop was Akbar. I had been here once before but it was a quick stop so this time I sat down, had a beverage and a proper look around. It's dark, red, and loud but don't get me wrong, these are actually all good things. I was one of the few females in there but that is more than fine with me, if you read any of my reviews you know I am a fan of the gay club scene. It wasn't out of control by any means, everyone was chilling on the various seats around the bar area (more than enough seating) chatting it up with their party. The pours on the drinks are S-T-R-O-N-G, by this I mean not for the weak at heart. I ordered a Cuba Libra, what I thought would be nice and easy but what I got was a glass of Bacardi with just a small splash of coke. Whew baby! I tried to play it off and took small sips but after a minute my certain someone had to get up and ask the bartender for a bit more soda. (Bless his heart) What's really nice about this place is the lounge is completely separate from the dance floor area/club side. In fact you even have to pay a cover to go to the other side (minimal, 4 dollars) So you can either dance the night away or just sit around having drinks hanging out with your friends. A good time with plenty to offer, including strong enough drinks to be very tipsy after just one (enough to insist on heading over to the nearest Kwik E Mart - what fun!) read more

DIRTY DIRTY HOUSE CLUB This review is specifically for Thursday nights at Akbar (club area, NOT bar area), featuring DJ Tony Powell. Every Thursday night, house music veteran Tony Powell enlightens us with his mixing genius, bringing to Akbar the most soulful, bangin, spiritually-lifting, deep house in LA. It's why my buddy and I call it our Church. From the moment you step in the door, until the lights go up, bodies are gettin down dirty on the dance floor. Usually, you won't see dance circles, popping/locking, or drug-induced fits of hyperactivity. Just people boogying down, having fun, and loving the music. And not to mention, this place has cheap drinks. $5 cover plus $12 - $14 for two drinks will be all you need for good times. The only downside is that the place is fairly small. On a given night, it is perfectly balanced. On holiday weekends, it's over packed. But regardless, the music is consistently awesome. Yes, Akbar is a gay club, but unless you have a problem with that, everyone is welcome and has a great time. After all, house music is about love, movement, and soul. If you've got these, you will love DDHC. Currently, my favorite house club in LA. read more

Hmmm Akbar. Ive only been 1 time but it was quite the experience. I went with 2 girls and wasnt told it was a gay bar until after we left. Upon arriival I was thinkng why havn't I been here before because they were playing RAD music, a lot of Ska that night. I looked around a bit saw that it was pretty equal amongst sexes. Then I looked at a guy sitting at the bar with a Martini Glass tattoo, i was like ok random tattoo. Then I looked at the bartender which was fairly soft in his demeanor...ok. So I go to the bathroom which was a little weird in itself, while I was in there a cute punk rock chick i saw dancing walked in while i was using the bathroom. Not only did she look at me while i was using the bathroom she mumbled a few words, and said Ill just come back. So its starting to get late and people are clearing out, and I had looked over what looked to be a bunch of frat guys to me. They all were going their seperate ways but when they were saying their good bye they would each kiss each other on the lips. At that point i was like man this is kinda odd dude but not in a way of being offended at all, more of this explains everything. After we leave, my friend says of by the way "its a gay bar" After all this the place was still pretty rad, it doesnt really give you an uneasy feeling, its fun and awesome music, and from what seems to be from all girls reviews the drinks are strong. 3.5 stars Id cruise back for the music read more

Not a bad Silverlake hotspot - unless you're a DD. Some friends of mine and I decided to check out Akbar on a Saturday night. We arrived at around midnight, street parking seemed plentiful - which was nice. The bar itself was crowded but not unusually so. I had elected to be the DD, so I can't speak to their drink prices, but most people I was with seemed to think they were reasonable if not a bit on the pricey side for what you actually get. The atmosphere was lively, the bar was dim but warmly lit where needed, and the crowd was on average probably late 20s to late 30s. A jukebox in the corner provided some good music, mostly classic hits and "nostalgia" tunes. Through a corridor next to the entrance is a small dance floor with a DJ. Overall everything was fine until I decided water wasn't enough and I wanted a Coke. The bartender - whose name I didn't catch - seemed almost offended that I'd asked for a non alcoholic beverage, and promptly poured me about two splashes of Coke into an 8 ounce glass roughly 2/3 filled with ice. For this I was charged $3 - THREE dollars for what amounted to a few sips of Coke. Some might think this is trivial but I have never paid for a soft drink at a bar - especially not that much for that little. I got the vibe that I was looked down upon for not drinking - even though I was DD for a group of four. When I asked why the price was so steep, the bartender snidely remarked that Coke "isn't free". Feeling annoyed, I pointed out that restaurant soft drinks come in massive bags for next to nothing compared to what profits are reaped by their sale. ESPECIALLY for such a laughable amount. He blew me off and I paid him, leaving one negative interaction on an otherwise enjoyable evening. Long story short, the bar is fine if you are drinking and dancing. DDs, stick to water. Anything else is apparently criminal and you're likely to be assumed ignorant of how astronomical the profits on soft drinks are. read more

My Meetup group held a dance event there on Saturday. I love to dance, but a bit tired of big dance clubs and the same sounds. I was looking forward trying a new, different place. I found it is so different it has a Mission Statement on their website. You should read it. It is located on Fountain Ave. between North Hoover Street and Sunset Blvd. It doesn't look like much from the outside, except for the big sign. I arrived there after 10:00 pm and there was no cover charge. Once you walk in you are transported to old fashion lounge of yesteryears. With plenty of seating and a long bar to grab a drink. They accept credit cards and opening up a tab is no problem. I'm looking around, asking myself "Where is the dance floor?" but looks are deceiving. I walk toward the right and you enter a cavern that has its own bar, and more seating. This mini bar has a smaller selection of spirits and great service. You turn around and behold a nice size dance floor, with a wooden floor. The black painted room with mirrors reminded of bathhouses in the 70's, but I digress. I liked that DJ booth was right there at dance area. There are plenty of speakers and a disco ball, which was shining brightly that evening for the recently passing of David Bowie. The music highlighted his legacy. Which was a bit of a challenge for me to dance to. The music centered around, non-disco hits of the 80's. Songs, I have heard for ... a very, very long time. The crowd varied a wide range in ages, dress, LGBTQ, and it was hetero friendly. The drinks were strong, people were friendly and loud, as we sang to Bowie tunes until closing. What a disappointment Saturday night at Akbar was. The music started out with really bad Jazzercise music then transitioned into better music once the temp inside the place was 100 degrees with 200% humidity. Might be more fun in a jam-packed steam room at the gym with dance music playing. They could at LEAST turn on the damn fans that was all around the dance floor. There should be a law against how high temp and humidity can go in a dance club. And the "SHOW" was REDICULOUS.... three adults doing a lame dance routine is not worth cramming into an already overcrowded space. I was really hoping Akbar was going to be a new fun place to hang out on Saturday night. The search continues for the perfect Saturday night spot with good music, fun crowd and reasonable temperature control. OH... and $8 for a mini glass of 90% ice 10% cocktail is criminal - PLUS a cover charge. Wish I could give it a -2 star rating for Saturday night. Thursday night however was a bit better. The bouncer lady looked at my I.D. and said to me, "Aw, you're just a baby." I smiled shyly as I played with the sleeve of my new cardigan. Thank you, bouncer lady, for making a boy blush. I hate people calling me a fetus. I like this bar for its jukebox, even tho it costs $1 for 3 songs. I just trust my fellow Los Angelinos will always pick the good stuff (the other night, "Y Control" by Yeah Yeah Yeah's...I haven't listened to that in ages). The crowd can be attractive, or should be attractive, but it doesn't matter here; everyone is so casual and relaxed, which is refreshing from the uptight WeHo scene. Can't forget to mention Red Stripe beer. Not many bars seem to carry it. Definitely, Akbar is a place for a beer, not a cosmo or a cocktail, at least that's how I see it, or is my assessment way off? $20 minimum if you're using debit/credit cards, so bring cash if you only want a single drink (honestly, though, who buys ONE drink at a bar on a Saturday night?). Great place to pick a fight with your boyfriend, ladies, b/c the jukebox music and the wall-to-wall chattering will drown out the loud scene you are making. read more

I've been here twice. FIRST time, back in December 2008, I didn't know it was a gay bar, so... I, being new in town, tried to think of local bars (walking distance) to take out my "not-so-out" of town visitor, Mr. N. Who is actually visiting LA to have a straight love affair with a straight girl he knows from his straight high school in straight NH. He didn't realize it was a gay bar until he went up to buy his second drink, which I see as a very good sign that he, nor I, felt like outsiders. It could be our ignorant small town NH dive bar familiarity. Training wheels. SECOND time, I had an EXCELLENT experience. I came to see a fellow teammate do stand up at the Akbar's "Drunk on Stage" weekly stand up comedy show. I didn't realize there would be a $5 cover, so I only had enough for the show and a Tuesday night special $3 Margarita (a little salty, but strong). I found parking up front, for my 2 wheeler and the show was fantastic, special props to Amy, Fortune and Erin. Plus, the crowd was flirty and fun. Training wheels off. read more

Catching up on some Yelping, so this review is a bit overdue. I used to love going to Akbar, but the last few times were less than stellar. The straw that broke this camel's back was when a bartender berated me because he'd thought I stiffed him on his tip! I was so stunned by his outburst I didn't know what to do. I'd never encountered such a brazen employee before. For the record, I left my usual dollar a drink. I don't think that's unreasonable. I'll tip two bucks a drink if the barkeep is particularly friendly. Now that I think about it, I wish I'd demanded my money back and then thrown that drink in his face. How dare you scold someone who's patronizing your business, essentially paying your wage, for not tipping you enough!? Goodbye Akbar. Yes this place is grungy and dark. Yes there is a strange vibe in the air that some wild nights have happened there. Yes it is down to earth and has a great Happy Hour. Other reviewers have covered all that. I am here to talk about Craft Night. Craft Night? At a bar? What is this nonsense?! That's right. Every Wednesday night there is a one of a kind event with the lovely JP and for only $2 one can create a unique sock puppet, monkey magnet, or necklace while getting sloshed on cheap strong drinks. It is not hokey or juvenile as it may seem. Instead, it is a really good time to hang out and meet new people. The crowd here on a Wednesday is hilariously divided down the middle between regulars/grunge alcoholics hunched over the bar, and overly enthusiastic crafters such as myself. I've never been to a gay bar, but with all the ruckous about this being an awesome gay bar I thought perhaps it would be more conspicuous, rainbow flags a-wavin' and drag queens dancing on table tops, Madonna blasting from the Jukebox. Far from it- when I come in, it's nice and warm, everyone's doing their thing, the bar looks super cool. I like it. Drinks are cheap and strong, it got super packed later on ( mind you, middle of the week, too!) and someone kept nudging into me from behind with their very large assets. ( which would be sexy if the girl wasn't tipsy and twice my size) It looks like a dive bar from the outside but it pretty cool on the inside. My favorite bar in LA: can be super packed, which I know some people can't deal with, but I don't mind if there's a good dance floor, which there is. It's two-sided (double headed?), different music on either side. Dance floor in the back, jukebox up front. Bars on both sides. Alcohol isn't something that I put too much weight on, but it's basically cheap here. There's no outdoor area, kind of uncommon for this town, but the crowd basically commandeers the intersection of Sunset and Fountain, so the sidewalk sale is effectively that much beefier. It's never shove-y, the people are mostly kind, and the isolating/private lives LA vibe is at a minimum; everyone seems more approachable than they might be in other venues around town. This might be an artifact of its narrow dimensions; whatever group you're with is inevitably sheared down to a single-file line when you try to ford the front bar. The staff is great, kind, and welcoming, and they lend Akbar its Cheers-in-Los Angeles feel. An uncountable number of bonus stars are awarded for hosting one of the best nights I've been to here, in NY, SF, wherever: Bears in Space, held monthly on Sunday, second weekend of the month. read more

I'm going to admit... I don't remember much from my one and only visit to Akbar, expect that I had fun AND obviously I drank too much. A group of my gal pals and I hit up Akbar after going to see the Scissor Sisters at Palladium. The dance party definitely continued at Akbar after the show was over. We spent our evening sipping on some strong drinks provided by the AHmazingly helpful bartender while we worked out those calves dancing the night away in our high heals. Since my night was unforgettably forgetful I must note to self: The bartenders know how to poor a stiff drink. Liver beware. read more

It's a big gay party in here. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just not my scene. I've been a few times with my roommate (who is gay) and some of his friends so I knew what I was getting into beforehand. It's actually a pretty cool interior and layout. The bar area is more of a lounge than an actual bar and does not come off as gay at all. The dance floor around the corner, however, definitely does. The DJ pumps good, loud music all night long and the floor is rarely empty. Don't be surprised if some stranger starts dancing with you, or if you start dancing with him. Get into the moment and the atmosphere and go with it. Don't come here if you're not into dancing. That would just be foolish. read more

I remember when my friends and I first discovered the Akbar. It was about three years ago.. the night when we couldn't fit in the Tiki Bar up the street that's the size of my bedroom. So we ventured off looking for a place to get a drink. We instantly gravitated to the place that was playing the great music. So we discover that it's a gay bar!!! What?? Really? He played a bunch of cool tunes and then some shitty song would come on and ruin it. It felt just like when I'm playing my MP3 player and all of a sudden my friend w/ the bad taste in music turns it off and tunes in KIIS FM!! Makes you want to strangle them! This place is an east-side staple for eastside gays not into the West Hollywood scene (not that I don't enjoy that as well on occasion)...During the week, the place is chill and a great place to catch up with friends and on weekends the place is packed and has a great dancefloor for all the smashed patrons. Let's get one thing straight - for those of you that don't know the difference between a club and a bar - AKBAR is a bar...hence how the word "bar" literally takes up 3/5 of the venue's title. Now that that's cleared up, let's get into the review. Supposedly, Akbar plays house music on Friday nights, but I went last Friday and the closest I heard to house was an old Cyndi Lauper funk track. Extremely disappointing. There was not a single soul on the lame excuse of a dance floor and about 30 heads total in the whole venue which is comprised of 3 rooms. The bartender was a nice cute gay man who made my vodka and cranberry VERY STRONG so that was awesome. He also made my friend's drink very strong and the drinks were $6 a pop - good deal for Hollywood. Remember though folks, a lot of the time you are paying for the ATMOSPHERE. It's a shitty atmosphere, so drinks are inexpensive. You get what you pay for - period. Looking at other reviews, perhaps house night was on Thursday and we missed it but either way, playing good music does not make up for a nasty venue. If I wanted to hang out in a hole, I would have stayed in the Valley and not wasted my gas coming down to WeHo - thanks. I don't like the Akbar, sorry. It's changed a bit in the past few years, so I'll spare you with the "It used to be so much better" comments - because Akbar STILL ROCKS my shiz. Highlights * Hot hipster Eastside boys among a diverse, friendly, down-to-earth, non-West Hollywood crowd. * They have incredibly friendly bartenders who take time to know the regulars. They'll treat you like royalty after a while. * Cheap, strong pours. * Great orange lighting that makes everyone look cuter. * Um, the jukebox is fucking amazing. In fact, I proposed to it the other day. Still waiting on the verdict. * Interesting conversations for once. But more than that, I love Akbar because: * I've met many of my friends here at this bar. * I've suffered many weekday hangovers at work from this place. * I've tripped clear across the room once. * I've had some questionable yet fun make-out sessions here. * I've hung out with Long Duk Dong (from Sixteen Candles) here. * I've had my ankles worshipped by some guy with an ankle fetish who proceeded to ask me on a date. My gay friend was gabbing about this place, and I responded "oooh, new bar!" Stepping inside was a nice surprise..the interior features a nice Moroccan motif. The crowd is very diverse, and laid back. Definitely a lot different flavor than most of the bars I've been to... There are nice comfy couches to lounge in the bar area while sipping (...chugging) your drinks, and in the back is a dance floor to groove to. The music is quirky compared to typical bar/club fare... Instead of 50cent blasting go go go shorty... they play indie rock techno like Frou Frou and some 90's remixes.. and oh of course don't forget the requisite Madonna for the community! Most important of all, of course, is the eye-candy...As a wanna-be fag-hag, my job was to get my friend's ass gropped fruitfully. And let me just say that night, mission accomplished. The music was a great mix of modern/early 2000's music, the bartenders were super nice and made good/strong drinks, and the crowd was overall young but with a good mix of different types of young folk. Went here on a Friday night with my boyfriend and some friends. Crowd was ugly, old and creepy. Music was awful! DJ was playing slow 80s music and other impossible to dance to tracks. Bartenders were very rude. Creepy people starring. Just an all around awkward feel. Cheap beer. But that didn't outweigh how bad the music was. We left at midnight and will not be back. A gay bar outside of Weho is pretty cool, especially since this one is much lower-key than the majority of the bars and clubs on Santa Monica Blvd. The drinks here are cheap, the music isn't too loud, and it's dim but you can see people easily. One of the best gay bars in LA. Drinks are decently priced, the music is great (if you like '90s jams) and the people are really friendly. Get here early if you want to grab a seat... and be careful of that second step near the juke box... it's a liability. I literally watched patron after patron tripping over it. I enjoy any opportunity to sip a nice cocktail while disco blares in the background, and Akbar ticks both of those boxes. It has low lighting and gorgeous, name-coordinated decor, plus the aforementioned music (they have a juke box), so it's great for a drink with a friend, a date, or a night out to get out of the house. I'm a bit of a martini diva, but the bartender kindly made me a vesper and even served a sidecar of the extra in the shaker, which was a great touch! Of course, they require proof of COVID vaccination, so you can feel safer there while you enjoy your night out. Be sure to check this spot out when you're in Silver Lake. read more

Thursday nights its the Dirty Dirty House Club. I love DDHC because Tony Powell always brings the heat when I'm getting dirty on the dance floor. This place has easily become my favorite place to go in LA. Its only minutes away from my house and I am a proud supporter of this place. The people are just precious, friendly, and outgoing. Gay or straight it matters none. I haven't experienced the bar because I do work the next day but Im sure the prices are pretty reasonable. The club opens early and closes at 3am I believe. The tiny dance floor gets pack at about midnight. There are 2 -3 restrooms which is nice. We were surprised when me and my friends got in - we didn't know this was a gay bar! Well, there's all sorts of people, but it's mostly comprised of gay men. It was my first visit to a gay bar, and I had a really good time. I was with straight friends, but we managed to talk to some guys outside - they were really cool. Every person we met tonight and talked to were really friendly and fun. The dance room - it was horrible! Maybe the music just isn't for me, but it's impossible to dance there. The bar area played much, much better music. Lots of classics, and some indie hits that you can actually jam to. Nice place, good price for drinks! read more
