But on a freezing cold Tuesday night when the restaurant was more than half empty they made us stand on the porch, with their backs to the door. I've heard such good things about this restaurant, and I'm happy to say it's all true. The atmosphere is relaxed and intimate. The sushi is some of the freshest fish I have ever tasted and so delicious. Also, the complimentary piece of pineapple for dessert was the best surprise. I might be biased because it's my favorite fruit, but it cleanses the pallet perfectly after eating tons of sushi. It is a little pricy for sushi, but worth the price for such high quality. This is the place and the only place in the Greater New Orleans area that actually prepares sushi the authentic way. I'm thrilled that it is open because I refuse to eat at the "Americanized" sushi establishments that purport themselves as Japanese restaurants. Over-starched rice, flavorless nori and average fish covered is eel sauce and mayo are a thing of the past since Aki opened. It is more than reasonably priced for what you receive. A similar dinner in NYC is 3-5 times the price at Aki. read more

Mr. Oui created and owned this gem before moving to Covington. I am 100% sure that this the best in Louisiana outside NOLA (or possibly including NOLA). Fresh ingredients and careful treatment of these materials result in great dishes. The small operation makes it possible for the chef to check details in every dish, which wasn't possible in Sushi-Yama. If you haven't tried it yet, you don't know what you are missing.
