I visited this restaurant because I've heard great things about it online and from friends as well. I entered the restaurant excited, but left disappointed. I ordered the calamari appetizer, which looked extremely pale and had no color. It wasn't in the fryer long enough and wasn't crispy at all. It was served with a thick sauce that made the dish taste salty. Calamari is usually served with a ponzu sauce, but this sauce was more like a donkatsu sauce. I ordered four rolls: spicy tuna, California, Little Rice roll, and Rachel roll. The tuna and California rolls were nothing special, which is expected as they are basic rolls. The Rachel Roll and Little Rice Roll were very bland, and were definitely not worth such expensive prices. The Rachel Roll was $25 and the Little Rice Roll was $20. The Rachel Roll did have caviar, but you could not taste it at all. The food was extremely disappointing and not worth that much money. The fish, however, was fresh. Tonight after craving sushi for days we finally made time in our busy schedule to go out and eat. We went to our normal sushi spot but it was closed so we tried Aki after seeing it on the web and it's reviews. We were pleasantly surprised BEST SUSHI I have ever had! First when you walk in you are greeted within seconds by the very friendly staff. Being first time customers we did have questions about the menu and the staff answered every one. Not only is the staff walking around but the owners as well! The owner welcomed us gave us suggestions and made sure we along with every other diner were happy. Our drinks were always full and the table was cleaned throughout our meal never was a straw paper,sugar paper, or dirty plate left on our table. Speaking of cleanliness we even witnessed a staff member cleaning the menus! This place was so so clean! Defiantly made me comfortable about eating there. If they take time to clean menus that means a lot. Now as for the food OMG BEST IVE EVER HAD!!!!!! Every item that was brought to the table was a work of art! Every customer lit up when their plates were put in front of them. We had a few different rolls and everyone was fresh! Their spicy tuna was to die for! I can tell you I would recommend this to anyone looking for sushi! Absolutely the freshest sushi on the Northshore. The prices are on point with every other sushi restaurant around however the staff and the freshness of this place is really in my opinion of a higher level! Wish they came with a dipping sauce, but really good nonetheless. The Atlantic salmon was also really good and came with a generous amount of fish. The real star had the be the fatty tuna roll. Omg! Probably the best roll I've had to date! Larger than your average roll, wrapped in rice paper (I think), packed with delicious fatty tuna, and my absolute favorite part with the pickled wasabi! Had date night and I wanted to try this place out because of the reviews. I ordered the Atlantic Salmon and the Rachel Roll which was phenomenal. Melt in your mouth deliciousness! I also had the Sexy Roll which I didn't really like. I did notice the different texture of their sushi compared to other sushi restaurants I've tried and it's very different. Everything tastes fresh and soft like...not mushy soft but soft texture. I would definitely be back but only once in awhile because they are a bit pricey. I enjoyed our meal during Aki's soft opening right after Thanksgiving. Chef Oui is a master sushiman who comes to Covington after being a chef and co-owner at Sushi Yama in Baton Rouge. He is truly a master sushiman. The only reason that I gave 4 stars is that they are still working out the kinks in their operations and supply chain. I fully expect that the next time that I visit Aki, I will leave a 5-star review. If you want to know what legitimate Edomae nigirizushi looks and tastes and like, please sit at the bar and ask Chef Oui to take care of you. Intimate restaurant with a chill atmosphere located in a neighborhood near downtown Covington. The sushi is the real star here-you won't find better quality fish or a more innovative menu anywhere. Great to see my old friend Mr. Oui! The sushi I had was incredibly fresh and flavorful. Very cozy and comfortable atmosphere. The waitress was super friendly, and very helpful. I went with a business colleague of mine and my family. He said had never been there but was anxiously awaiting to eat there with me. Really fresh sushi! They started us out with a simple cucumber salad that was very good. Then we enjoyed the salmon appetizer which was drizzled with truffle oil and was absolutely delicious! We also tried the wasabi salad, a mix of fresh seafood with an amazing dressing including fresh wasabi. Also had the Tiger Roll which was really great! Having lived in Iwakuni , Japan for a year; Okinawa, Japan for a year and Kailua , Hawaii almost 3 years it's safe to say I have had my share of quality sushi done right....Aki delivers on all levels as far as the food is concerned.The sake was nice and hot and very smooth, we had the wasabi salad and it didn't disappoint neither did the Tuna lover (which I would request some hot sauce added next time :) just my preference) of the two rolls we ordered (sexy Roll and spicy tuna) each impressed on their own style. To top it off we were served a small portion of pineapple to finish it off that I could of eaten a few portions of that refreshing treat...We will defiantly be back and I plan on exploring the entire menu!
