I always see night staff going into the store. It's closed to shoppers like me. A few Saturdays ago, I was running errands. I had a late lunch at McDonald's and then got groceries at Fresh Co. Parking was busy. I parked roughly two rows away from the entrance. I walked in and grabbed a cart. I like this supermarket. It had everything that I needed. The produce was fresh. I was pleased with the celery, avocados, and apples that I had picked up. There was a sale on all things Pillsbury. The crescent rolls were cheaper here than at Walmart. I was impressed. This store has a nice assortment of jaffa cakes. I remember learning about them on Sesame Street as a kid. I was happy sinking my teeth into my first orange one years later. This store made me so happy seeing them in orange, cherry, and blackcurrant. The frozen food section is amazing. Momos. Potstickers. Samosas. Pillsbury Pizza Pops. Naan. Drumsticks. Beer. I was so happy. I felt like I had won the food jackpot. What was sad was seeing how many cracked eggs were in cartons. It makes me wonder how they got to this state. I ended up passing on eggs here and hit Shoppers Drug Mart instead. Other than not putting a bunch of Humpty Dumpty eggs back together, I loved shopping here. I had a pleasant woman at the checkout. I got my Scene card scanned to earn points. I then paid with a credit card. Done! I bagged everything. I thanked her and left with my groceries. It has pap (grits), boerewors ("farmers' sausage"), chutneys, Rajah brand of curry masalas, masalas for fish curries and Durban-style masalas. They have a huge selection of famous biscuits and rusks from South Africa and Flings from Zimbab. Love this place.

I parked close to the main entrance and walked in. I do miss having a Sobeys in Markham. This one is large and had everything that I needed. The produce section was great. I needed cucumbers and gone a couple that were on sale. This store has a lot of pre-cut fruit if you are looking for a supermarket shortcut or just don't feel like cutting fruit. With barbeque season being here, there were inflatable ketchup and mayo in front of their respective product displays. I liked the inflatables so much. If they were for sale, I'd probably get them because they looked cool. This place has heat-and-eat quiche and empanadas. I loved looking at this section so much, from meatballs, to rotisserie chicken. The dessert section was deadly. There were lots of whole cakes available. You can also get single slices. The cupcakes looked yummy, too. I got a dozen eggs. I enjoyed the dairy section. The product that opened my eyes wide was Silk whipped cream. I have found that you can get a dairy-free version, but it has sugar in it, or you get one with no sugar, but the dairy is there. This Silk product made me happy. It was both sugar-free and dairy-free. Yay! Each Sobeys is different. This place had kombucha and bubble tea in bottles. I was intrigued with the latter. I'll need to give it a try next time. This store had everything that I needed and more that I wanted! Luckily, I had some self-control during this visit. I got a nice woman who helped me at the cashout area. Strictly Bulk is a godsend for the terribly grocery-deprived Bloorcourt area. The store carries everything from organic laundry soap to bulk candy (whoo!). Despite the name, they do carry a few non-bulk and prepackaged items, including my beloved Fontaine Sante hummus. The prices are more than competitive, and they beat out the bulk sections of some of the large grocery stores nearby (such as No Frills at Dufferin Mall or the Sobeys at Ossington and Dupont). You'll never want to buy steel cut oats at Whole Foods again! The savings are definitely there, whether you are buying for a large family or just one person. You aren't paying for packaging, marketing, etc. One time, for fun, I compared my bag of whole salted almonds to the prepackaged brand at Shoppers, and the price came out to nearly three dollars more per pound (!) if I had purchased the Life brand. And they were on sale! Spices are another incredible savings, if you only need a few tablespoons of something for one recipe you will pay pennies on the dollar with nothing left to lose its potency while it collects dust in your cabinet for months or years. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They will always check to make sure that they are charging the correct price for your items. I noticed tonight that they just put their staff holiday stockings up, so if you're a regular try to show them some love! There are plenty of people who love this place so much they seem to hang out at the tables up front drinking coffee all the time! Watch out for their limited weekend hours, I have been mid-recipe cooking Sunday dinner and popped over only to have forgotten that they close at 5pm. Recommended buys: Fontaine Sante dips, handmade face and body soaps, veggie pate, grind-it-yourself coffee (I like the Turkish kind). Best value is in spices and staples (rice, beans, etc). Needs some work: Very small cheese/refrigerated selection, not the most kid-friendly store - today I saw a little boy accidentally spill about a quarter pound of pasta on the floor, and I watched in horrified anticipation as he gathered it together if he was going to take it to the trash can or put it back in the bin. He ended up listening to his mom and left it for the cashiers to clean up.

Locally owned by a husband and wife team from Mexico and Brazil, this little shop is a true testament to world travellers who love good food. I initially found them on the Too Good to Go app-- this makes me so happy that they're so committed to food waste reduction and sustainability. The owner, Mauricio, gave me a full tour of the place, from truffle oils to Japanese DIY sushi kits to Spanish paella kits to German snacks and more. He even showed me personal care products from Vancouver, like shampoo bars with no plastic packaging. They're going to be making Thanksgiving foodie gift packages soon, so stay tuned.
