I met Akoss through her husband John. The two alone are absolutely hilarious. Her husband gave me her card and that same day I called Akoss to get a consultation. She had me come in , I showed her what I wanted, and I ended up buying the hair and setting up an appointment with her all that same day. She met with me at 6am that following day because I had to be at work at a certain time. 6am rolls around and she has me out in less than 3 hours. I was very skeptical on getting braids because I haven't since I was a child... I usually go with clip in extensions because it m so tender headed.. but it's only been a week and a half with these braids and my hair is growing so fast. I would absolutely recommend her if you're looking for great quality, fast service, professionalism, and lots of good laughs. Some may argue her pricing is a bit high but then get upset when they go somewhere else and don't like the results . Suck it up and pay for something that will benefit you and last in the long run.. Went here to get a trim for my hair as well as styled they tried charging me 50$ for brushing out my hair and trimming it that didn't even include thee styling . I told her if she was charging 50$ to brush out my hair and cut it I'll just Pat for her brushing my hair which she charged me 20$! She then told me she wasn't going to finish brushing out my hair because the product she uses is expensive if I wanted her to finish I'd have to pay the full 50$... Apparently I should have read the reviews first. Harriet was my stylist. Took my braids out, trimmed, washed, and braided my hair...overpriced indeed, plus the braids were not cute like I had walked in with. You would think since I walked in with simple cute braids on my own natural hair, it could easily be replicated...no, I was not satisfied at all with the outcome. I will never go here again. I scheduled an appointment for a Friday at 5:30. Upon arrival she was finishing up someone. Didn't wait more than 5 min. She did me two french braids with hair added. I had them for 5 days. It's really sad to come all the way to Modesto to support a store and only to be overcharged a second time on 9/7/19 and once again watch someone take the price tags off a product after you already seen the price tag $39.99 and was changed $59.99 and the second item no price was told $59.99 because it was long hair, but the $39.99 was short hair and then I was charged $10 extra for using a major credit card.. the first time this was happen 3yrs ago and I was in the neighborhood today and thought I would give her a second chance, nope never again.. it's so disappointing for the second time again I don't recommend and will not return again.. I don't usually write bad reviews but this is very bad.. if a store doesn't have a price tag run don't buy it also if they go in the back and take off the tag also!! read more

I called and asked for a price for a wash, flat iron, and trim for my child and was told I need to come in for a price. The owner was late to our appointment. When we got into the shop the owner looked at my daughter's hair and suggested that she gets  braids. After finally gettinga price of 200.00 to do my daughter's hair. I declined. The owner told me that she could trim my daughter's natural hair without it being flat ironed. I had never heard of this before so I asked probing questions and the owner advised me to trust her as she is good at trimming natural hair. She gave me a price of 45.00 and said it needs to be blow dried for better results and said it would be another 20.00. I kept looking over at her cutting my daughter's ends. The owner asked me to move seats and I obliged because I thought she wanted to protect me from getting hair on me. When she was done she asked me how it looked and I said fine. It was in an afro and it looked like a shorter afro. We got home and my daughter washed and blow dried her hair. This is when I saw there was a problem. My daughter's hair was extremely uneven and I was devastated that I didn't follow my first mind and refuse the "natural hair trim" that the owner exclaimed that she was so good at. I took a photo and styled my daughter's hair as it was 8pm at this time. The next morning I sent the owner the photo and asked why did she do this to my child. I stepped away from my phone for about an hour only to return to multiple text threatening not to lie on her and give her a bad review. I called the owner and she told me she doesn't know what we did to my daughter's hair when we left her shop suggesting that I would have butchered my own daughter's hair I guess just to give her a bad review, which of course makes no sense whatsoever.  The owner told me to bring my daughter in that day and I told her I was working and we had to go to her graduation after I get off. The owner then said it must not be that bad and suggested that I wasn't a good parent because I had to work and could not bring my daughter in. The owner and I got into an argument and she then exclaimed that "that's why I don't even like to cut black people's hair". The owner would not allow me to come in on any other day as she stated she was busy and after sent me a photo of her sign from her shop. I am writing this review just to tell of my experience and let people be their own judge. The owner may be good at doing other hair styles but she was not good at trimming my daughter's hair that day nor good. I Don't recommend Akoss Salon. It is over priced and the products she sells are very expensive and are not good quality and they can be bought cheaper every where else. She changed me $350 for crochet braids including the hair products. My hair is very, very, very short I didn't mind paying that and I was there for 3 hours and I was not happy to find out that she charged the same price to a customer that had long hair and got it braided and the customer was there all day. She should of charged her more or charged me less and her daughters were working on my hair along with the owner so I tipped each daughter $20 and the owner $20 on top of the $350 for the work. 6 wks later I called her to see if she can take my braids down she wanted to charge me $60 I felt all the money I spent at her shop she should have taken my braids out for free as a complimentary or at least gave me a break on the price. This lady is a fraud. I read quite a few reviews saying how great this place was so I decided to give it a try. I wanted to try a pack of 18 inch platinum blonde clip-ins. The hair she assured me was 100% remy human hair was in fact NOT at all. I took it home and washed it, let it air dry, applied minimal heat to curl it, the hair immediately singed up and was ruined. I try really hard to support small businesses but I recommend not wasting your time and money with a business that is nothing but dishonest and poor quality. I will NEVER be back. I went in on a Sunday, which I am really appreciate taking me last minute on a Sunday. She was 30 mins late to the appointment like she forgot she made. She got out the car and gave me a dirty look cause I have my hair braided and I booked an appt for braids but it was for my daughter. She braided my daughters hair with extensions and it is is already coming up and it's only the third day she has had the hair in. The braiding job in general looks rushed the beads constantly have to be fixed because of the way she did it. She complained about it was the type of hair I got but it's the same hair I always get my daughter and I use the same brand in my hair. She said she is a professional braider don't use that hair and my daughter and I both always go to professionals and they use the brand just fine and say it's good hair.. I won't be back and I'm not impressed with how she braids. She charged me an extra $15 to blow dry out my daughter hair and my daughters hair is not long at all doesn't even reach her shoulders yet.. my total was $150 for something that didn't even last 2 days. In august I got my daughter hair braided with the same style with the same hair for cheaper and that lasted 3 weeks before it started raising. Even my mom who is not as particular as I am with braiders says it is not a good job. read more

Today was my first time visiting and I absolutely love Akoss!!! I have had many many many stylists either ignore what I ask for or make my hair even worse than when I walked in, but not here. Even a simple wash, condition, blow out, flat iron and trim (what I got) can be too much for stylists somehow but she did it in less than 2 hrs. She took the time to examine my hair and fix it accordingly. Not to mention she was very friendly. I walked in with a hot mess (uneven hair all around, MAJOR split ends) and now it's perfect! I would give this place 0 stars if could. I just moved to the area, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I've never paid $200 to get my hair washed, straightened, and trimmed. My mom is a hair stylist in San Diego and told me that she would've charged someone with my hair length and volume at least $125. The outcome wasn't terrible, but definitely not worth $200. I've been to this place a few times in the past and came out completely satisfied and happy,I went recently and was very unhappy. When I arrived the stylist asked me what size braids I wanted,I told her a medium size she immediately quoted $250.00 I asked her what size was for $180.00 she basically showed me the same size. I had already purchased my own hair 2 packs of human hair she told me I needed more hair so I had to purchase more hair from her. I've always only needed 2 packs of hair no matter who I went to it's always been more than enough. She told me the back of my hair was too short for her to braid it was never a problem before,she left a great portion of my hair out and undone and still charged me the full price,if you have short have beware...I paid approximately $320.00 for braids completely dissatisfied. I will never do business again here. I had to go to another shop to have completion of my hair it was not a problem at all for them to do my hair you call yourself a professional.
