Buyer Beware Our group needed 2 bridesmaid dresses tailored for an upcoming wedding. Akram Hanna told us that walk-ins were welcome and accepted the dresses for inspection to determine a price. During this interaction, no consultation fee was mentioned, no credit cards were taken, and no agreements were signed. Note that there is also no service fee or consultation fee mentioned on the company website. However, upon receiving a call with the estimate, the prices were far above what we were willing to spend, so we let them know that we'd shop elsewhere based solely on the cost of the alterations. Unfortunately, the dresses were then, for lack of a better phrase, held hostage. The company's response was that "for wasting their time" $60 per dress needed to be paid before getting our property back. No tailoring had been started, and again, no previous mention of added cost had occurred. After significant back and forth, a member of our group went to collect the unaltered dresses in-person. The company still refused to return the expensive dresses and out of panic, she ended up paying $20 per dress for their safe return. During this process, the staff berated her and were extremely unprofessional. This unethical business practice borders on thievery, and we now feel completely taken advantage of, and frankly, extorted. I would recommend everyone to stay far away from Akram Hanna unless you enjoy exorbitant hidden fees, shockingly rude staff, and a ransom for the return of your unaltered property. read more

Akram has done a number of men's garment alterations for me, ranging from tapering linen pants, to sizing down a too-large shirt, to a complex shoulder alteration in an unlined hopsack blazer, and each has been performed perfectly. This is neither the cheapest nor most expensive tailor around--but for the quality of work I've received, I've always left impressed by the value and thought my money was well-spent. I was referred here by a SuitSupply designer who made the apt observation that, being in the Shops at 900 N. Michigan, Akram is working regularly on suits and dresses that cost $3,000+. AMAZING work making a Ted Baker coat fit my petite frame. Ted Baker does not carry petite sizes, so my coat looked a little large on me (pictures show a different coat but of the same style, because I did not take a 'before' picture of my original coat before alterations). The coat ended below my knees, the sleeves covered most of my hands, the collar was a little large and accentuated the wrong features, it just felt like there was a little too much fabric all around. Also, there was this hidden magnetic clasp that secured my collar in place, and it was making the top portion of the coat bulge out in an unflattering way when I am not standing or sitting straight. He shortened the hem of my sleeves and bottom of the coat, took the fabric in (I have no idea how), and MOVED the hidden clasp like an inch over so that the collar could hug my chest and neck correctly! Mind you that clasp was in between fabric layers! It's this kind of attention to detail that seals the deal for me. I wouldn't trust anyone else to petite-ify my clothes now! read more

I needed a formal gown shortened and I needed a few closures moved in the back so I came in and was helped promptly (no need to call ahead or make an appointment). I was able to pick the dress up about two weeks later on a day that was convenient for me. When I arrived the dress was ready and absolutely perfect! Had a dress hemmed about 3 inches, it cost $65 for 2 layers and took 2 weeks. The stitching looks great! The only thing missing for me was warmth in the service. Mr. Hanna wasn't personable with me in the slightest and after trying my dress on at pickup I had to cover my dress up myself and see myself out as he took on another task and never came back out. My expectation for such a small shop would be for someone to be sure I was satisfied and good to go before leaving, or use my name since you have it on the ticket. I actually felt uncomfortable going back for my dress because of how cold the experience was going the first time. For this reason I would not go back but can certainly recommend the work will get done well if you need a hem. read more

I had 2 bridesmaid dresses that needed hemming about 4 weeks before wedding #1. Akram Hanna was recommended to me by a friend & then yelp reviews made me feel even better. They close at 6 vs 7 noted in some sites, but I ended up arriving at 5:50pm to drop off and they were so accommodating. Tried on both dresses, got them marked & left within 15 minutes. I've visited many tailors before, but I've never encountered a situation like this. Not only was my dress delayed, but it was also returned with a hole in it and wrinkled. The lack of accountability for their mistakes is astonishing. I'm not just disappointed in the customer service--I'm appalled. When I asked how they could fix this, especially with the wedding only three weeks away, I was told to leave the store and find another tailor in the city. To make matters worse, while I was still in the store, the owner mocked my feedback in front of me and other customers, joking with another worker about checking other clothing for holes. I politely asked if I could get a discount off of the dress for all of my trouble, and the man laughed at me. If being honest about their errors results in this kind of treatment, I will definitely take my business elsewhere. 0/5, 0/10--strongly NOT recommended! read more

Guy who runs this place totally against women. He treats women like crap. I was in the store and personally witnessed while he was helping a man redo a suit that was three sizes to big, but only two seconds later he was talking to my GF who needed minimal changes to a pair of pants and he took a look at her in the pants (which needed taking in in the waist area) and he refused to pin her because he said he didn't want anyone coming back to complain he did t do a good job. She asked why he couldn't help her fix her pants and he berated her. I will never step foot in the shop again. I went to this tailor once before, and his service was average (didn't berate me - but I'm a guy) but he charged three times what a good tailor should charge. I will never go again. read more

I'm not one to write yelp reviews, in fact, I have never written one before...but this was the worse experience I have ever had at a cleaners. I went into have a dress hemmed and zipper replaced and was told the charge was $125....I refused to pay that price since I knew if I went down the street to Paramount Cleaners, i would be charge $40. I thought the price had to do with the material of the dress but I had him look at another dress to hem an inch off the bottom and he said the price was $90! I didn't have him touch the second dress because his prices were ridiculous. As i was getting ready to leave, the man who pinned my dress refused to give my first dress back until I paid him $20 for his time (which was a total of 5 minutes) and that he was going to take the pins out after I paid $20!!! I have never service like this. It was the worst experience I have ever had and the biggest rip off. He actually refused to give me dress back to me before unless $20!!!!! read more

TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE. The owner was HORRIBLY RUDE to us. We came in and I was immediately asked to go put on the clothes I needed altered, so I obliged. Once we were done assessing what needed to be done to them specifically, I was given a quote which way exceeded my budget ($255 for 3 pieces with pretty straightforward tasks like shortening a dress.) I believe in respecting someone's pricing though (whether I agree with them or not) and don't like to haggle. To me that's disrespectful so if something is out of reach for me, that's ok, I'm comfortable walking away. I politely said so and was ready to leave when the owner (who'd already been agitated the whole time) told me "Fine. Go to a dry-cleaner's, they'll be cheap. But there's a $35 fee for pinning." What? He wanted to charge me for pinning my clothes on me. Not only have I NEVER heard of such a fee, it was not disclosed up front. We asked to see where that's listed and he pointed to a paper on the wall, behind the counter, where his various prices were listed in tiny font (completely illegible to anyone on the other side of the counter.) So my husband took a photo so he could zoom in and of course, no such fee is listed on there. He literally MADE UP A FEE ON THE SPOT because he was bitter I wasn't willing to pay his prices. I feel like he's entitled to charge whatever he wants/needs, and I'm entitled to spend whatever I want/can. His aggressive tone and dishonest practice were completely unacceptable. THEN he proceeded to get combative with us and say that if I had just told him what I needed before getting pinned there'd be no charge, but I got pinned and they don't work for free. (No work had been done yet??? This took 10 minutes of his time with no one else in the store and most of that time was me changing.) Either way, he didn't even GIVE ME the option to do so upon arrival, NOR did he disclose this "policy" ahead of time. He right off the bat directed me to the changing room. I couldn't get a word in edgewise during this whole exchange. Finally he YANKED my clothes away from me and took them to the back to angrily remove the pins (and damaged the fabric in the process.) So don't go unless you wanna pay $50 for a straight-forward hem, $50 for a straight-forward strap shortening, $35 to get pinned... and a side of aggression. Long story short, this man is rude and dishonest and I will NEVER GO BACK! read more

i brought in a long gown and trousers to get hemmed because they were both too long. there were a ton of people in front of me getting various items altered, and i had no issue waiting. the issue i had was i wasn't acknowledged until it was my turn. nonetheless, i brought the dress and trousers in two weeks before the event and gave them a week and a half to hem the dress and trousers. when i went to pick them both up on the agreed upon date, the dress and pants were still not ready. the man had to quickly hem them both while i was waiting. i paid $ in total. i was not impressed by the disorganization and time management. i decided to give them another try since it's close to where i live. i needed a vest altered because it was too big. i brought it in and said i needed it a week later for a trip. i was charged $75. i came back a week later on the agreed upon date, and it was ready on time. the third time was the last straw. i brought in a pair of pants to get hemmed about an inch. he wanted to charge me $60?!?!?! ridiculous, absurd, and unheard of. take your money elsewhere. read more

I ordered shirts which were made but didn't fit. After one alteration, they still didn't fit. A promised second alteration never happened, but they insisted that I pick up the shirts and pay the balance. Terrible experience. I wouldn't trust them to sew on a button. I have gone here now twice for fairly urgent/important alterations--once for a dress I wore to officiate my friend's wedding and another for the dress I wore to my own rehearsal dinner--and they did a phenomenal job on incredibly short timelines. Both dresses were floor-length and altered perfectly, and I also had the straps of one of them taken in a bit. While it is a bit pricey, the work they do is more than worth it and they are really focused on client service.
