Dr Akstein is very professional and thorough. I have heard that he is one of the best. He took care of my baby's eyes for several years before we moved away. She was a preemie and he was very gentle with her. He also saw my son and he was thorough with him. My only complaint was the wait time. 3 hours in the waiting room and an additional hour once we were taken to the back. It could be unbearable at times. I have nothing bad to say about the service or the doctor himself. I just hope the wait time has gotten better since the last time we were there. read more

My experience was an older lady sitting at the front desk raising her voice to a high pitch at me asking if I had been seen. As I started answering, she motioned me to come stand right in front of her. As I was walking, she kept talking not once did she listen to me saying that I just got a referral to come get an appointment. Finally, after me having to raise my voice over hers to tell her why I was there she finally told me rather dismissively to go see the other lady around the corner over there. I walked away as if I knew exactly where to go. I did find the appointment lady, however. It's not that I haven't been treated rudely before. It was the confidence by which she did it. I can tell that this is who she is and that other employees make excuses for her. well, it's not a good look and not very professional to have her working at the front desk for a first opinion of the place. I approached the appointments clerk and told her that I wanted to make an appointment, and that I have a referral, and she immediately asked for my insurance. My 94-year-old mother went to this office to be checked for cataracts. This guy had the nerve to tell her that she wasn't going to be around long anyway so did she really want cataract surgery? Dr. Akstein was impatient. He had formed his opinion of me before he even met me. He treated me roughly in a physical manner and called me difficult when I was frightened and anxious. He was dismissive of a complaint I had and gaslighted me about it. I felt unseen, unheard, and humiliated. By the way, if you ever read this Dr. Akstein, I had a sinus infection that showed itself two days later. That's why I had the pain and pressure. The problem was not in my head. You really should consider retiring because you definitely don't have the bedside manner it takes to work with patients. I will never return or recommend this place to anyone. I take my kids here every year but this will be the last time , the lady in the back office I believe the appointment setter was running her mouth about my kids appointment because she can't do her job , she was telling how bad the company is and yelling , saying she wasnt going to put their app in and I am very upset this is the last time we will ever be coming here . I had an eye problem while traveling. I called my ophthalmologist and he told me it may be an emergency and to go to the nearest eye Dr I could find. My wife found Ackstein Eye Center in Riverdale, GA and called to see if they could see me. It was 2pm. My wife explained the urgency, and they told me to head their way and they would fit me in. Dr. Ackstein and his staff were excellent. In spite of the late hour, they all took their time and did a thorough assessment of the situation. Dr. Ackstein determined that my problem was not an emergency carefully explaining the why and I was on my way. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing the services they provide. read more

Run! You have options.Be prepared to wait 3-4 hours. He schedules 50-60 patients a day. Remember it's only one doctor. He has no since of urgency while he watches soccer on TV in the kitchen or takes personal phone calls while you sit and wait and wait. Also numerous patients have been rescheduled 3 or 4 times. So I decided to voice my opinion on my visit with this office and how terrible it was. So instead of Dr. Akstein being a professional and handling the criticism he decided to cancel my son's surgery. To me that is very asinine and highly unprofessional. He should be able to take the good with the bad and make changes where needed. If you look all over google and yelp I'm am not the first to say the amount of time they have you waiting is absurd ;especially if you have younger children! This isn't a place I would recommend to anyone no matter what your age is! If I had the option of not giving any stars I would definitely choose 0 because that's what they deserve! This is the first review I posted They have you sit in a waiting room for over an hour. Finally when you get to the back the technician talks to you for about 5 minutes if that and takes you to sit in yet another waiting room for another hour or 2. This place is not child friendly and the people at the front desk act as if you're getting on their nerves when you ask how much longer will the wait be. Dr. Akstein is a great doctor, but every time my husband goes in for his two-year exam, he has an issue with the office and insurance. You would think they would operate like other medical offices and pre-authorize the insurance, but this last time they waited until he actually walked into the exam room to check on his insurance! Then they told him that he couldn't get the vision exam AND the eye exam done on the same day and that one of the exams isnt covered under his insurance, if he would like to pay cash! We have excellent medical insurance that covers both exams due to a cataract in one eye AND vision insurance that covers everything 100%. I just went to my opthamologist last week and they did both exams on me and billed my medical insurance with no issues. My husband wasted two hours away from work to be turned away, so I spoke with the office manager the following day and told her that he would NEVER return to that practice again. I have to agree that the wait time is horrible and that we are never seen at our appointed time, however, that being said Dr. Akstein is very thorough. He discovered a potentially life threatening issue with my husband via the exam and testing received. As a result, we continue to patronize his Riverdale location. My suggestion for scheduling with most doctors is to be the first patient of the day or the first patient after lunch. This generally ensures a reasonable wait time. The doctor and staffs was okay, but the services were horrible. The eye exam and the vision exam were done in two separate days and the wait time was sooooo long for something that was done in 5 minutes. I was told that the glasses would be ready with three through six weeks and yet it took longer than that. I've read the other reviews about this eye center and all I have to say is "to each their own". My Mother, my sister and her husband, and I all are patients here and have found not one reason for complaint. Yes, the waiting time can be overly long at times but I've learned that when you expect and receive good treatment, the wait is worth it. I have been going to Dr. Akstein since 2003. He and his staff have always been very professional and courteous. On my most recent visit, I had to have a test that required a needle stick and the technician, Vitor, was great. I never felt the needle. I have been asked by some, why I don't try to find a doctor closer to my home, but my answer is always the same and that is "Dr. Akstein knows my medical history and I trust him to do what is best for me." Terrible service for medicaid/special needs patients. I have a two year old who was born prematurely and has a few issues due to this. We were referred to the Akstein clinic at three months old (by Southern Regional Med. Ctr. NICU) and have been going to Akstein since six months of age. We have always scheduled our appointments in advance but have always had to wait over an hour past our appointment time due to referrals. This last visit I requested a referral from my child's doctor three weeks prior to my child's 10am appointment; needless to say again we were forced to wait three hours in this office to be seen. Upon complaining to Dr.Akstein he simply said that it was due to our lack of funds and the type of insurance we have. Discrimination...Because the doctor's office had failed to send in our referral in a timely manner, we the patients who have been coming to Akstein for well over a year were treated with No Compassion. We were not offered to reschedule due to the inconvenience and when asking what the problem was we were made to feel as if we had done something wrong. While I can go on and on about each and every bad visit my child has had there I'll simply say, if you have medicaid and your child is the patient (special needs or not ) Do not go to this doctor. He even went as far as comparing my two year old son with Autism to his adult wife whom he claimed had to wait several hours at a scheduled appointment for a breast exam...No Comparison. Terrible customer service...while he claims to be the best in the business the service would kick his office to the bottom of any list.
