My daughter was in a hospital The doctor said she could be transferred to Akua Mind Body residential treatment center. We Agreed. She has bi polar schizoaffective disorder. The social worker of the hospital recommended Akua. I looked it up. It doesn't say they treat any psychosis or schizoaffective disorder. The social worker at the hospital said they do. I asked does she know what my daughters illness is , She said no. I looked up treatment centers that do treat what my daughter has. I recommend them to this social worker. Ignored what I said .They Transferred her to Akua in an Uber without even someone from the hospital accompanying her.My daughter was frightened and left the Uber. Filed a missing person report. She called after two days. However, Akua said there was no bed. I am in New Jersey. I gave her hotel rooms for 10days while she was waiting for a treatment center. During this time the police came to the hotel where she was staying to find out if she was ok. He said Arielle was fine. Finally, Akua contacted me that they had a bed in San Diego. Then said they couldn't take her because they are training new people and they wont know how to handle her. I told them my daughter hasnt had medication in her for 10 days. They could care less. Now she has started to react to not having medication. I have been trying to get her back home. So thousands of dollars keeping in a hotel, undoing the medication that was given in the hospital. I could'nt get my daughter back to New Jersey. Please do not send anyone to Akua. it was a house with 6 people. They have several around California. The first place had 6 patients in a small house. I believe they didn't want to handle a more complex illness. So they got rid of her. Money is put into a website that looks great. However, its a facade. read more

The day I stepped into Akua 2/17/24 is when my clean date started. I wanted sobriety so bad and was blessed to find it there. I can only speak on the Terry loma location.Akua saved my life. I'm reading complaints on food, house drama, costs, and people's feelings getting hurt. I was there for detox,recoverty and a new way of life. That's what I stayed focused on. Theres's drama everywhere, I choose to stay out of it. I'm old school and probably to old to get involved with it anyways. After detox I chose to shut my mouth and listen and learn. I went to all the classes, meetings and the gym. I enjoyed all the outside meetings and still enjoy meetings today Thankfully my insurance paid for it and I so took advantage. In the spirit of staying anonymous let's just say I took someone here who I love very dearly. AKUA came highly recommended by an addiction therapist and without them knowing it, is the same rehab facility the addict chose on their own after days of searching! AKUA has multiple facilities across the state of California. The Terra Loma facility in Sac County is an all men's facility aimed towards first responders with the most amazing, kind, and knowledgeable team including a full medical staff of nurses and therapists. The person I know that is currently here is nearing completion of their 30 days in-house, and AKUA has helped them to set up a continued care virtual program for 5-hours a day after release. I cannot recommend this place enough! Most importantly it's where the addict of my story wanted to go as I seek Al-Anon treatment and counseling on my own. Drop off was the most beautiful moment... between the addicts decision to seek help, and the serenity felt upon arrival I knew we'd picked the right place. Thank you, AKUA. This facility is detrimental to peoples recovery. They allow men to bully women, sexually, and mentally, and when I say mentally that means called their names, put them down. Call them at called them crazy. Call them nets and continue to go on and so forth I could not continue my recovery there because people were removing my name from the meetings list, etc. When I first got there and I detox I was not allowed to have any of my medication. Got it five times I was detoxing severely from alcohol with hallucinations, as well as tremors, sweats, etc. they would not give me my medication because my blood pressure is not high enough I spoke with several different clients there who stated they had to have seizures before they would medically do something and they would have to go to the hospital for a series of days sometimes for them to care and by the time they came back. The detox was pretty much over for medication for them, their staff doesn't nothing. They allow everything to be the way that I am stating I agree with some of the comments on her. The food is poor. The person is not clearly a certified chef I never hardly ever ate there. I only drink my drinks that my family had provided for me for nutrition as well as I brought all my drinks in drop off. I pretty much didn't need anything there they just wrecked money and I wanted to get out from all this harassment and drama and everything. I told him I could not recover under the circumstances he did not care they just tried to keep me there and try to convince me, but I told him you need to do something about the situation. They did not. Everything was all based on morning money and since you're already in, it's easier for them to let you out because I'm sure they have to tell the state why you were leaving. They do not want to put any of this on information as to why you're leaving. I don't know what exactly they put because they don't give you any of that information, however I don't recommend this facility to anybody that really wants to work recovery. It seems like a bunch of people have court orders. I understand the CPS part and respect those people are trying to get their children back however the court order people that are just trying to stay out of jail, excuse them because they are cruel and you never know a man can get physical with woman considering their anger issues so please take this into consideration if we're going to this place they also lie to you. They tell you that you get your phone in seven days. You don't get your phone for 14 days and you're only allowed to use it twice a day for an hour and a lot of times they take it from you because you didn't do something right they love to take your privileges away. It's treated more like a jail or prison and anything else you're basically not being rewarded for trying to change your life, you're being punished anybody I wish you would've listened to me. Would've actually done something about it at first. I love the facility. I love some of the staff. They were great, but I just felt like at the end of the day. Nobody gave a shit recovery badly thank God. I have good support now on the outside and I got into an IOP program. I also do meetings and it's not their IOP but when I was told that IOP was gonna go to Wallace, they said that they were garbage. Their Director has the nerve to put down in another facility that I have gone to before on outpatient and successfully completed in a year no journey test and nothing. I got way more out of them than being in a residential. The last residential I was that was options. They were fantastic and great and help and get my child back. I do not recommend it to anybody is trying to do things because they don't want to help you and who they do want to help they just pick and choose. read more

If I could give this location zero stars I absolutely would. I strongly suggest you consider not going to AKUA Fair Oaks for your mental health treatment. There are many reasons I only spent 24 hours at this location and left unbalanced, triggered, and needing recovery from my experience. FOUR HOUR LONG INTAKE PROCESS:The intake process is at least 4 hours long. I was picked up from my house and arrived at the facility at 9am, I was sitting in one room answering question, after question, after question until 1:30pm. These questions were REPEATS of questions I had been asked before. Also, the line of questioning was triggering. Imagine being questioned about your mental health, suicide attempts, drug use, family history of abuse, previous abuse, gender, sexuality, past partners, etc for 4 hours. It was so overwhelming to me that I began to cry, and go into a mild anxiety attack. NOT OFFERED FOOD FOR TWO MEALS: I was offered nothing but chips and nutri-grain bars to eat. I ate no breakfast, no lunch, and would have missed dinner if I hadn't INSISTED and reminded them (after the 4th time) about my dietary needs. POOR COVID-19 BATHROOM CLEANLINESS: The facilities did not meet basic cleanliness standards. When there was soap in the bathroom (two bathrooms had no soap and toilet paper was on the floor of the bathroom), the soap was watered down and thin. As if water was just added to the dispensers in lieu of actually filling them with real soap. POOR COVID-19 MASK PROTOCOL: Mind you, I came to this facility in the midst of COVID-19. Although staff were required to wear masks, it was scarcely found any of them wearing them. Also, I was told repeatedly that I did not need to wear a mask. I told them I feel more comfortable wearing my mask (as COVID-19 was still going on). I was told so many times that I honestly felt pressured not to wear the mask. UNCLEAN BEDDING AND ROOMS: The ONE night I spent in Fair oaks I did so without a pillow, or bedding. Why? The bed I ended up going to had bedding that was unclean and unwashed. Even though it was stated to me that the beds were clean, I could tell they had not been. The bedding on the room I chose had hairs, dirt, rocks, a brown stain and debris in-between the sheets. The drawers to either side of the bed had someone else's papers, hair, candies, and stains. I actually went about cleaning the bed and dressers myself since it was clear nothing had been cleaned. I removed the bedding and had to take it to wash myself, because I was in intake for so many hours, ate one dinner, and was forced to participate in activities (despite my anxiety attack) my bedding was not washed in time. HAD NOTHING TO SLEEP ON ALL NIGHT: I asked the LVN nurse if there was any bedding, pillows, or ANYTHING I COULD USE ON MY BED, the answer was a resounding NO. (I think I know why, because there was a HEAPING PILE of bedding in the middle of the hallway.) So I went to sleep that night with no pillow but my clothes rolled up, and laying on a large scarf to cover direct contact with the bed. A nurse woke me up around. 1 - 2 am to give me a fresh blanket (God bless her!). HORRIBLE THERAPIST: I cannot detail more right now as I am getting activated just thinking about my poor experience but I will detail this last bit, it was the bit that truly threw me over the edge. The one group I attended was led by a therapist with a self-proclaimed military background. She told us that when people are expressing deep emotions and are crying that we should not hug or comfort them. She said us comforting them was a selfish act we used to get them to stop expressing their emotions. She went on to use someone else in the group as a example. I cannot mention any identifying information about this person it would breach confidentiality. However, what felt the most uncomfortable for me was hearing this therapist mentally force everyone in the room to agree with her even when it was clear some did not. Many people just parroted (including myself) back the words she put out. I didn't agree with them at all. Please avoid this location. read more

This is the worst drug alcohol rehab facility ever. I went to the one in Fair Oaks CA. The food was nasty. Canned heated up frozen meals. The rooms were three to a room with no room for your luggage or even room to turn around. DONT go here. They claim to mix eastern and western drug n alcohol philosophy and that is a lie. AKUA sucks big big big time. Don't waste your money or your insurances money. Oh one last thing it's $25k to $30k a month. That's more then $800 a day. I stayed at Akua Mind & Body at their Fair Oaks location for mental health treatment. I stayed there for about five weeks. During my time there, the treatment I received was stellar! The best parts were the groups & the therapist. The staff, the environment & the culture gave me the chance to work through many of my issues & put me on a healthier path in recovery. AKUA Mind and Body (Fair Oaks location) is NOT the place for healthy and productive recovery. The environment is not safe or secure. The facility itself was not well cared for. The food was unhealthy. The kitchen was filthy. The atmosphere was chaotic. Curfew was not enforced. The beds are just a foam cushion in a small frame. Anyone trying to detox/recover deserves so much more than what AKUA is able to offer. There are many better options in the greater Sacramento area. read more

They want your money or that signature from you so they can bill your insurance company and that's it. These people prey on folks who are desperate to get their loved ones help and these people know that. Will say or do anything for that signature then tell you to F- off once they got that. Anything at all goes wrong and they will keep your money. It's in the fine print. They're thieves in my opinion. Please seek a place that isn't so greedy. They knew I wasn't going to stay the whole time so came into my room during day 2 of detox to get me to sign off on the last payment that was still 3 weeks away. They told me I was only paid through detox even though I was paid for a month. Didn't call my wife who was fully aware of the situation and had been previously in charge of all payments or money. She would've known. They crowded my room with 4 staff members like there was some big emergency to get this signature. Once they had that, they didn't care at all. I spent $15k for 3 days in a shifty bed and 4 bags of chips. My advice, shop around and get them through detox at a facility only. Then go into a NA or AA meeting and ask for help and get them a therapist. That's what they're gonna do but at 200X the price. read more

This program definitely has its flaws. I spent 30 days at the Fair Oaks location in their mental health program. I've been out for several months now so thought I would leave a review. They were able to get me in within 36 hours of calling them which was very helpful as I was in crisis. The intake process once you arrive takes about 3 hours which is brutal. The program itself is decent. Some of the staff really care while others are lazy and there is a huge lack of communication between providers. There is only one therapist for all the clients which is around 12 at max. The structure of the program isn't great, lots of downtime especially on the weekends, groups are repetitive, staff doesn't know what they are doing half the time. The food is pretty good and the chef is always willing to accommodate requests or substitute due to allergies or any other reason. The psychiatrist almost changed my meds to a dose that would've been dangerous on multiple occasions so I was thankful I knew my medications well. The staff is in charge of all your medications and they almost distributed them to me incorrectly on multiple occasions but thankfully I corrected them. I was there with an incredible group of people which made the world of a distance and still talk to many of them. The group facilitator and therapist are both wonderful and go above and beyond. There is no therapist there on the weekends which made me feel a little uneasy in the case of a crisis and not feeling like the techs were well trained but thankfully it was never too much of an issue. The case manager did not create a discharge plan for me which left me scrambling to find options for aftercare once I discharged. The staff didn't wear masks very often which was concerning due to the pandemic and them potentially exposing all the clients. They did take us out on a few outings and we did a weekly trip to the convenience/vape store. You can receive mail which was wonderful and they distribute it daily. The curfew is reasonable and the evenings are left to open for chill time. We often had movie nights. The courtyard is beautiful and I spent so much time outside which helped so much with my healing. There is no pool at this location which is advertised. I would not recommend this program if you are struggling with an eating disorder, they are not equipped to properly handle that. When I was there they were not offering yoga with an instructor (we did yoga on the TV through youtube) or acupuncture due to covid which was frustrating as it was advertised that I would be receiving those services. Overall the program absolutely saved my life and I am so thankful for that. There are some flaws, but there are flaws with every program and if you're able to overlook them you will get out of the program what you put in. A lot may have changed since I left the program as many of us called corporate with complaints. I have stayed in touch with a few of the staff members and they continue to cheer me on and celebrate my victories. I am ultimately so thankful for akua and the space it gave me to heal some very deep wounds and gain a sense of purpose and direction. This program had only been open for a few months so they were still working out the kinks. I believe it will only get better moving forward. They gave me the opportunity to advocate for myself which was very important for my recovery. Overall many of the staff members genuinely care and want to help you get better. read more
