Sub par food and zero customer service skills!

Ok so I am going to try and explain to the people here leaving bad reviews for Al & Leda's. The food here is iconic and a local staple! Has been for over 50 years! It's a family run business and they get slammed on the weekend with orders especially on a a Friday and Saturday night. Sometimes they are so busy they don't and can't answer the phone. Yes the customer service could be improved but like I said they are doing us a favor by continuing to operate. And they don't really care either because they made their money long ago and are doing the people of Dixon a huge favor by continued to serve awesome Italian food at a reasonable price. Pizzas are made to order including throwing the dough and making the sauce daily from scratch. So stop complaining! Lol! read more

Where to start..... Living in Dixon, I didn't realize how good I had it, from a food perspective anyway. I moved away nearly 10 years ago and I have been searching for any pizza even remotely close and haven't even come close!! I LOVE this pizza. For me the classic cheese and sausage is Pizza perfection. I think the one thing that really helps this pizza stand out is the crust. It chewy, sorta crispy, and just plain amazing. They use fresh sausage and if you go in on a weekend your likely to see a giant pot of sauce simmering away on the front counter. Don't let the decor fool you. It's old fashioned and I hope they never change. In Dixon you will here about several other places. Joes and Angelo's being the other two of note. They are all excellent and are better then anything I have found outside of Dixon. But for me, it's Al's. Every time I come home for the weekend, it's mandatory that I order pizza. You can also get half-cooked pie's to take home and finish in your own oven. It's not quite the same, but it's still real good. Do yourself a favor, clear up 2 hours of your Friday night get there around 7, and get ready for Pizza perfection!! read more

I grew up very close to Al & Leda's. I wouldn't be surprised if my first solid food was pizza from here. It's likely been 10 years since I've had anything but pizza from Al's so I can't comment on the entire menu. I can only tell you that the pizza is fantastic. There is not one specific thing that sets this pizza apart, it just seems to always come out just right -- dough is a great thickness and texture, sauce has a good taste -- but not overpowering, and the toppings are always ample and have a good taste. I often eat at the actual restaurant when I'm back at home, but I don't want to mislead anyone -- it's a little rough around the edges. The juke box does not have anything from this century, the decor is.... well there is none, and the service can be a bit spotty and have some attitude. All of these things are fine with me because I know I'm going to get great pizza and cold beer -- bonus -- I can also listen to all of my high school prom music all night. read more

During the 23 years living in Dixon, I clearly took Al and Leda's for granted. I had it quite often, but never thought of it as one of the best pizzas that I'd ever had...until I moved to Florida! I would eat Al and Leda's every single day if I had known the choices that I would be limited to down here. Sometimes I think that there's nothing better than Mom and Pop pizza! Again I'm out of town for work and have to try a local pizza. THE best indicator of quality is longevity. They've been around since 1960. Easy choice. The delivery time was good, and the pizza came hot. The crust was tasty, kinda chewy. Not like the franchise crusts, but not exactly like Chicago style either. The sauce was good.....maybe basic,in a good way. No complaints about taste. I had sausage on the pie and it was good, with a garlic aftertaste. My only complaint is that I ordered extra sauce, and they seemingly just spooned some extra over the cheese, probably dual purpose---showing they listened to my order, and to indicate whose pizza it was too. That aspect could have been better. Lay it on,I'll gladly pay extra. It may have gotten 5 stars had they done that. I recommend this pizza. It's not an epiphany, but good, home made pizza that's reliably tasty. read more

I must say, this is some of the best pizza in the area. The cheese melts perfectly and the dough they use is delicious. I've never had any problem with the quality of their pizza. Having said that, I have one complaint. Up until now I would have rated Al and Leda's a perfect 5 star. Tonight I placed an order for a Big Al (20" pizza) with split toppings -- 2 toppings on one half, and 2 different toppings on the other half. They charged me for 4 toppings; I asked why the charge was for 4 toppings and not 2. It seemed reasonable to me that if you are only covering half of the pizza with 2 particular toppings, and the other half with 2 other toppings that it would only be chargeable for 2 toppings. When I asked this the woman on the phone snickered a bit and said I was being charged for 4 toppings because I ordered 4 toppings. Granted, the price difference is only a few bucks, but I am disappointed in the manner they handled this and find the policy to be lacking in the customer service area. read more

I don't know how much of a chore it is to make your own sausage if you're a pizza place, but man, what a difference. According to our super-helpful server, Al & Leda's pizza has homemade sausage, sauce, and crust. The cheese is shredded from big blocks, which apparently affects the deliciousness. I live an hour away, but we have friends in Morrison, and I'm already looking forward to stopping in again for that sausage pizza. On top of that, our server was great - she gave us a bunch of information about the business (hope Leda's okay with everyone knowing she's in her 80s!) and had great ideas for keeping the pizza fresh, etc. If you're looking for a fine dining experience with different forks for each course, this is not the spot. If you're looking for excellent pizza, great prices, and wonderful service, Al & Leda's is quaint and comfortable and should do the trick nicely. read more

On our way back to the western suburbs of Chicago, my wife and I stopped in Dixon for dinner and decided to give Al & Leda's a try because of the high ratings on yelp. I'm glad we did. This is nice, home-town pizza restaurant. And it's been there a long time, since 1960 -- and is still owned by the lady who, together with her late husband, started the place. Julie, our very kind server, told us that 4 generations can be found in the back kitchen at various times. There was a pretty steady stream of locals coming in to pick up pizza. Atmosphere: When I walked in, the first impression were that things were a little dated, but clean. Some of the tables and signs look like they've been around for a couple of decades or more. Still, as I said, it was clean and pleasant. Not too loud. There is a TV playing overhead, but it wasn't too distracting. I didn't care that they had video poker over in the corner. Service: Good and steady. Julie was our server, and she did a great job. She was very kind and filled us in on the history of the place. Food: Since they have other kinds of dishes, I asked our server if we were coming here for just one time, what should we order? She said it should be the pizza. Good choice. My wife and I split one. On my half, also at her recommendation, I ordered the Leda's Special (sausage, pepperoni, onion, green pepper -- minus the pepper on mine), and it was very good. Tasty. It's not Chicago-style pizza, but it's good. It made me want to finish my half. The crust was the most memorable thing. Chewy, yet crispy on the outside. Great! I went to a pizza place in Chicago just the week before I had come here to Al & Leda's. For some reason I'm just not a fan of Chicago style pizza... But I do like Al & Leda's! We had the Leda's special... I think that's the name. We substituted the green peppers for pineapple with no problem. They have all the essentials ready for you at the table, parmesan cheese and red pepper flakes. For some reason our pizza took a while to come out, maybe because it was a large.. I usually don't eat the crust on pizzas, but I loved their crust. Our waitress was very nice, she even told me I had to sit there and finish the rest of the pizza cause they didn't allow taking things to-go, which was a joke of course. We found out about Al and Leda's from the Illinois Farm Bureau Partners magazine. Loved it!! A family owned place with a homey and friendly feel. Delicious fresh homemade pizza you can't get from the national chains. We ate in on a Friday evening early August and the other diners were clearly locals- good sign. Amazing pizza and delicious garlic bread-also on homemade bread. We had to take half the pizza to go (we were so full!) and ate it later at the local drive-in movie theater. Will definitely come by Al & Leda's again next time we're in town! read more

Ok to start off it took 25 minutes to get a drink. Then another hour and a half after this to get our pizza. Then we got possibly the worst pizza ever at a "pizza" place. For the time we waited I could have virtually driven to one of 4 major areas over and hour away and gotten an excellent pizza. can't really comment on the pizza but I had their pasta combo last night and was very disappointed. Ohhhhhh.....where to start? First, another member of my party ordered a senior pasta, just mostaccoli, for less than $4. My combo of spaghetti and mostaccoli cost over $8 and we got the same amount of pasta. Second, both our plates of pasta were very watery. It was like they pulled the pasta out of the water and put it straight on the plate. Didn't even bother to drain the excess off. Watery spaghetti isn't my idea of good food. Third, I have heard that the bread that is served with dinner is homemade. If it then they should fire their baker. The bread I was served was so dense and tough I could hardly chew it. It was also served cold, like it had just come from the fridge. The only positive portion of our visit was the waitress. She was pleasant and courteous even when dealing with out complaint. I really don't think I will be eating here again. read more

If you are in a hurry, forget about it. Sometimes they don't even answer the phone when you call in an order. They are that busy. And there's a reason for it-they have the best pizza, Italian hamburgers and cheeseburgers, Italian beefs, and pretty much everything they make is top notch. It is not a fancy restaurant at all, but it doesn't need to be either. I grew up on this pizza and I return every chance I get. It is amazing and wonderful to still see Leda after all these years in the back making the same sauce, sausage, pizzas, and everything else. Service is slow, orders don't come out fast, but it's always very very good. If you're in a hurry call in a half hour ahead of time so they can have it almost ready when you get there. And they still might not make it, that's just how they are. But it doesn't ever stop me from going. I just know what I'm dealing with before I get there. I always took good pizza for granted. Then I moved to Los Angeles and realized I had it good in Sterling when it comes to pizza. I'll take Al & Ledas over Angelos any day! Angelos is good though. My wife and I went there Saturday night as you walk in we noticed there wasn't much of a crowd. The waitress took our order which consisted of one pizza with three toppings. After waiting over 50 minutes our pizza finally arrived. This was no fault of our waitress who kept checking back with the kitchen and she knew that we had waited entirely too long. While waiting this long it gave me an opportunity to look at The interior of this place and it definitely needs a good cleaning. After starting to eat our pizza we realized that there was no sausage. We got a hold of our waitress and she apologized and offered to give us the pizza for half price. Actually I have had much better then this pizza and I can't figure out how they have been in business for over 50 years. To say the least this was our first and last time here. The only reason I gave it two stars was because of the nice waitress we had. She deserves much more than what this place was offering her. read more

Al and Leda's hmm others say the resturant is a bit rough around the edges?? it's a brick block building, fairly pain inside and out, with a few old pics of the owners on the wall...Italian memoribila etc., but it's always clean. Pizza is good, sauce is not too sweet and doesn't taste like it came straight out of a can like maria's pizza..(yuk). The lasagne is the bomb, and the sauce is waaaayyyyy better than mama ciminos'(which taste's like THEY just opened a can and dumped it on some pasta). Waitress are great, unless you come in drunk then they don't tolerate it, and they shouldn't!!! The only bad thing I can say is it takes way too long for delivery. Pizza is very very good so if you don't mind going it to get it you should try this pizza!! read more
