Al's has very good pizza - picked some up on the way to my Mom's up in Sussex county and she loved it so I think I may have added a couple regular customers for them. The good reviews are well earned. First, I will say Al is super friendly and it felt very good and old school to call a pizzeria in Jersey and order a pizza to go! I thought the highlight of the pizza was the crust - very nicely done - crispy and crunchy. Had half plain and half toppings and both were very good. Great value too! Great local spot. Our calzone was made fresh, penne vodka sauce was perfect and a nice fresh Caesar Salad to add! The cheese calzone dough was crispy on the outside, soft in the middle! This is actually my second time going here but the last time the old owners sign was still up. Always looking for good pizza and this is certainly one of them. Small, unassuming pizza shop right on route 23 south so easy to get to. Met the owner when I stopped yesterday for lunch, very nice and friendly guy. Told me he has been up and running for 4 months now and things were going well. Second time there and both times the pizza was outstanding. I have my regular pizza place that is hit or miss, especially on a friday night and Al said he delivers to Kinnelon so definitely going to give him a try tonite. The mission continues to find the ultimate Margherita Pizza in North Jersey. Recently, we tried Al's Pizza in Newfoundland, NJ. Where is this, you ask? Exactly. Right away, this is, right now, a great secret pizza spot! Its located on Route 23 North, right next to a "vacant" gas station. At first glance, you wouldn't even know a pizzeria exists here. We were excited to see that Al's offers a Margherita pie. We also ordered their Sicilian pie. Up first, the Margherita. We loved it. The thin crust, fresh mozzarella was cooked to perfection - not too much but just enough so that you get the mozzarella taste with the basil and sauce. The basil was baked on but still had a strong taste giving this pie a nice fresh taste. The sauce was sweet and not acidic. The crust was thin, soft but the bottom layer had a perfect crunchiness to it. Simply put, a job well done Al's. So far, we think this is our "best kept secret" pizzeria. And what about the Sicilian? It was a traditional Sicilian pie but it was huge. A very, very thick pie. The sauce was acidic and the cheese was melted perfectly on top but with the Margherita blowing us away, the Sicilian was afterthought. In sum, a very large pie that will fill you up pretty quickly but not something we would order again. This was a perfect example of a Sicilian pie that you probably had/tasted already somewhere else. Friday night at our house is pizza night. Add a bottle of wine and a movie and that's not a bad way to end a long work week. After living in Jefferson for the last 21 years I can honestly say that pizza here - no matter where I've gotten it - has been "meh" at best and "I'm never going back there" at worst. Last Friday (5/6) I decided to try a new place for our Friday night pizza within a 10 mile radius. Well, after 21 years I've found a place that left everyone here saying "wow, why haven't we found this pizza sooner...". We ordered a large pizza with sausage and mushrooms. Crust was crispy and a thanfully just a little on the thinner side - I hate doughy pizza. It was close to what you would expect from a brick oven without the brick oven. The sausage was real sliced Italian sausage and not that crumbled junk so many other places use. Sauce was tasty and there was just the right amount of cheese. There is no skimping on anything including the toppings. Last night I ordered the same pizza and toppings to see if it would be consistent with the same one as last week. I was pleased that the entire experience was exactly the same. While I have only odered from Al's twice I can tell you that all of our pizza will be coming from this shop and I can't wait to start trying other items from the menu. I suggest that you absolutely give Al's a try. You won't be disappointed. read more
