Very popular park central in Ala Moana/Waikiki area. Love those nice long walks I take once in a while, just to get some steps in. Magic island is short walking area great for those who cannot tolerate longer distances. You got beach and sand to make those sand castles or sun bathe on sunny day. There are plenty of parking stalls along the park, a large parking lot next to Magic Island. Lots of spots to get suntan so do not worry. Popular with families who have parties here for birthday or holiday celebrations. I recall having picnics or parties in the past with family. Only reason I have to mark off 1 star is that there are more homeless people or very sketchy off-ish kind of folks you do not want to interact with. I would say going during the day is fine but always be on guard regardless as crime can take place not only during night but daytime too. read more

Like any public park, the park will reflect the current cultural environment and its surroundings. There are many who enjoy the park and there are many who live there too. For the most part, it clean and offers a place to relax and enjoy. As in any public place, use discernment and common sense to enjoy the view and the waves rolling in. don't be fooled - ala moana beach park is not dog friendly, but some people just chance it anyway (you could risk getting a fine). I know this so we don't stick around very long if we do come here. We wanted to do a little memorial for our late dog Nala, so we were in and out pretty fast. I prefer the end of the park near point panic. Sometimes they don't mind pets there if there's a huge organized function like pet walk or charity walk. We like this beach park tho because it's huge and lots of space and it's generally pretty clean. lots of parking available too along the beach and it's not that far away from the parking spots. read more

What a gorgeous and large park! Absolutely enjoyed coming here for sunbathing and soaking up all the beach vibes I could possibly stomach. Such a treat having this accessible park for all to enjoy. The soft sand, beautiful turquoise water, and canopy trees are a feast for the eyes. There are nice sidewalk trails for walking and running that wind you through the park. There are also public restrooms on site as well as beach showers to help wash off the sand. If you're looking for a nice beach that isn't as packed as Waikiki this is the perfect spot. Grew up on Oahu and I got too many stories regarding this place. Went to a company picnic here, Friends BBQ, birthday parties, watching the Waikiki Fireworks on Friday nights, and nighttime walks. Those were the good ole days without crazy homeless or crimes. Free to roam around at night. As a kid, I love watching in Awe of the Banyan trees and the Myna birds. Every Saturday driving through the park, you'll see many people tourists and locals making their way to the beach and walking back to their picnic spot at the grassy park. Sometimes you find people in groups of car shows or motorcyclists showing off their rides. People playing their reggae music in each picnic site and the smell of bbq or picnic food. Birthday decorations from a far and a nearby photo shoot of a Wedding Party. This place was always happening. I have a lot in d beautiful memories of this place. I discovered this beach park a few months ago and it is absolutely beautiful . I work online a lot and it a great place to get some fresh air and interact with the wildlife while being in the middle of a big city like Honolulu. It has been a godsend to me as I am always indoors. It is very safe and it is a great place to relax, have lunch and people watch while you work. One of the many beautiful parks on Oahu the uniqueness of this one is it's adjacent to the Ala Moana district and all the local owned condominiums. This park is very peaceful and tranquil in the early morning for a walk but on afternoons especially weekends it fills up with mostly local families Barbecuing up everything from burgers hot dogs to chicken. They have a great picnic enjoying the sea and trades. The beach and water are very good. A bit rockier than in Waikiki but still very nice. And it's where the locals hangout. Ok it's only 100 yards from where we live so it's a definite plus for us. There is parking but it fills up early. read more

Ala Moana Beach since Covid has been with us and with the down trend of the virus a lot more shows and activities are happening now. You can find more yoga classes, boxing classes and auto shows and many other activities all around the park and beach from water polo, water yoga and running and walking groups besides the skaters and skateboarders the park is getting much busier. The Friday fireworks are the busiest time with everyone trying to get a space to have dinner and watch the fireworks. read more

12/24/22: We were visiting Hawaii for the holiday & it was our first time. This park was down the street from our hotel. We decided to go for a walk & ended up at the beach for a little while. It is a very relaxing and family-friendly atmosphere. The water is pretty clear but there's lots of rocks in the sand. Be careful. There are food trucks, a few barbecue restaurants, and areas there that offer tours, scuba diving, etc. We didn't partake in any of that. We were just walking and taking in the scenery. I really enjoyed myself. There are a lot of protected trees there that offer a lot of shade. I really recommend anyone go there for themselves. You won't be disappointed. read more

"We go beach!"...just about always it will be somewhere at the Ala Moana Regional Park. Hanging out with work peeps celebrating a birthday is always a great reason to get out and chill. With more than enough to keep six feet from any group that is if you're able to find yours, parking is always a struggle anywhere in town but here with patience it's doable my only issue is once you're heading in one direction good luck in trying to turn around lol!! East side with Magic Island is a kid friendly area where it's super chill and lots of grassy area and benches with tress to hang your hammock or do a jog around the path with the killer views of the ocean is always breathtaking and a couple of bathrooms and shower nearby is always a plus. Right in the middle at the tennis courts area is where many who chooses or needs a larger space to do some team sports, tossing footballs and where you can find some workout bars and even L&L to fix that hunger cravings. West Side more paths for joggers and even a volleyball area and next to the tennis courts are a round about area where there are more parkings and great place to do that turn around to re-think your strategy of placement. We all have our favorite location at this park and is my go to place to view the sunset...that I can never get enough of. Aloha Beaches!!! read more

Looking from Ala Moana Park at Ala Moana Center... OMG ocean-view condos blocked my view to the mountain. Looking from the park at the ocean... Mmm... beautiful. Thank goodness, there hasn't been changed much since last time I left the island. I used to swim in the "giant pool" at Ala Moana Regional Park. I usually come here when lifeguards were present. It is kind of important because there could be jellyfish (not for the salad) or current conditions, as well as for security. I have so many fond memories at Ala Moana Regional Park. I attended many festivals, tournaments, canoe paddling club practices, picnicking, eating at the food stands, jogging, photography and just walking through the park from work instead of taking TheBus. I heard there are curfews posted by the city in recent years. Whatever it was the reason but I'll be sure to avoid coming here after dark. read more

This is a park where you can barbecue, exercise, swim in the ocean, play tennis, do yoga, and much more, and it is definitely a very popular place for locals and tourists alike! I love to use the rental bicycles to go around the park in circles, fly a drone in the park to take pictures of the beautiful scenery, swim in the ocean, and rest comfortably on the sandy beach to get a tan. Fishing here is also recommended Since the yacht harbor is just next door, schools of fish sometimes come right up to the edge of the surf, and it is interesting to catch them with bait. I often see locals fishing. More importantly, there is concern that there is not enough parking. If there were more parking lots and enough parking spaces, many more people would be able to visit, but the parking lots are always full and there is a meaningless traffic jam in the park. Ala Moana is a great park to check out if you're in the Honolulu area and a great starting point before reaching to Waikiki. It has everything you need -- beaches, trails, biking and more. It also boasts of the manmade Magic Island, which is great to see the emerald ocean along with views of the city. I give this park more of a 4 than 5 mainly because the beach and the park itself isn't as good as the other beaches; you can get a much better view of the ocean/beach just a mile down the road at Waikiki. Ala Moana Regional Park is more for a one-stop shop for everything. It is also less crowded than Waikiki so that is pretty nice too. My favorite part of this park is definitely the Magic Island. It's a great place to get some nice views and wind down, especially after a hectic day in Honolulu! It's also a great place to start your day with stunning views of the ocean and the city. I would definitely check it out if you're in the area. Ala Moana is literally right next door from Waikiki so it's definitely worth it IMO! read more

Less crowded than waikiki beach and plenty of parking. Very clean as well. We came in the morning and it was perfect. There aren't a ton of restaurants along the beach like Waikiki. But there are some food stalls and can always buy food ahead of time and bring to the beach as there are restaurants near the beach. read more

So much better than Waikiki area as you don't have the crowd at all. Parking is an issue during peak but that's everywhere. Patience is key. You'll get the sun, you'll get the palm trees, minus ppl all breathing down on you. It's a bit rocky when you enter the water but go a few more feet fwd and you'll get the nice weather with decent sand. read more

I hate to reveal this but the beach here is better than nearby Waikiki. It's less rocky, the beach is better protected, swimmers are watched by one of the best lifeguard teams in North America, the beach itself is wider and more comfortable and most importantly, there are far less tourists here. It's a local beach, with better and more affordable food than Waikiki. I used to come here with my young nephew, in fact I lost his favorite toy fire truck in the rising tide. Every time I return I look for that truck. This is one of my favorite parks in the whole world. read more

You don't realize that right in our back yard we have the most beautiful beaches and scenery in the whole world ! One side you have Kewalo Basin and the other side Magic Island . Still construction going on the Diamond Head side which is Magic Island. Today is also the last day you can enjoy our beaches due to the restrictions on public parks and beaches. Its a shame just certain people decided to play Russian roulette w/there lives and now the pandemic is in the triple digits. Now the rest of us have to suffer and cannot enjoy our beautiful beach. My family just loves Ala Moana Beach Park! Conveniently located in town right across the street from Ala Moana shopping center. It's a large park with lots of open space. Great for families for events, picnics, and exercise. This beach park is also the home to Magic Island. We used to come here a lot as a child, since there are no big waves so it's a great spot for children. It can get especially busy on the weekend, so come early! read more

This place is so crowded even during a time when you are only allowed to get in the water. I am sure this is mainly because This is where both tourist and locals flock. Nice for walking and catching the sunset but other than that I don't think would really recommend this place. It's also great for walking and or running. In fact my first 5k was here in 2018 my daughter and I did the mango run. read more

Did you know? 1- This park was formerly known as "Moana Park". Its name was officially changed to "Ala Moana" which means "path to the sea" in 1947. 2- During World War II, the park was used as a staging area and military battery. Construction of barracks, an armory and a temporary fortification to support a heavier presence of personnel and weapons were completed to defend O'ahu from Japanese invasion. 3- There was no beach for swimming or water sports at this park until 1954. Originally, this area was a wetland, full of kiawe trees and coconut trees. It was a coral reef marshland. 4- Developer, Henry J. Kaiser, suggested the creation of a man-made peninsula or island where hotel resorts, theaters and swimming pools would be built. But, the development project was stopped after this peninsula was built and turned over to the State of Hawai'i. The State named it "Aina Moana" or "land from the sea" to recognize its coral fill construction. We know of it as "Magic Island". 5- The City & County of Honolulu has proposed an improvement plan for Ala Moana Beach Park and Magic Island in November 2018. They are still reviewing public comments before proceeding with any of the plans. I have fond memories of Ala Moana Beach Park as I was a pre-teen when Ala Moana Center was being built and when Magic Island was developed (1964). My parents would drive along Ala Moana Boulevard to go to the beach or family picnics. To us youngsters, the park was like being in another World of Hawaiian Paradise. It was NEW to us because we were used to playing at Kapiolani Park, Kūhiō Beach and Waikīkī. We'd find ourselves running about the green spaces flying our kites, sitting under the shade of the beachside trellises and reading or splashing about in the cool salt water with somewhat coarse yet pristine sand. As we got older, my brother and I would build model airplanes (balsa or plastic) with gas-powered motors and fly them in the designated areas. Ahhh, the simple and fun days of childhood. Starting from middle school, my father and I would jog or run around this park (about 2.5 miles) almost daily. Because I didn't swim because of an earlier near drowning experience, I'd run around the park several times while my father would swim the length of the beach with his buddies. I'd continue running or walking with my father until the early 2000's. But, alas, both he and I started to suffer from knee issues. As the years rolled by, I have continued to go about this park while seeing both a degradation of the park maintenance and services AND cyclical city improvements. Since moving into the nearby neighborhood, we have taken more advantage of this park by incorporating it into our daily walking routes or sometimes just to stop by to watch the sunsets or to participate in family picnics. Just as a warning, there seems to be a group of homeless people roaming to either beg for food or take advantage of unsuspecting visitors. There have been thefts and people have gotten accosted in the park. This park still holds a number of events that draws thousands here to enjoy such as the annual Shinnyo-En Lantern Floating Festival, July 4th Fireworks Show, Friday Night Fireworks Show sponsored by the Hilton HawaiianVillage and site of the return of the Hōkūlea (3-yr around-the-World journey sailing canoe and crew journey using traditional Hawaiian navigational techniques). In spite of some controversial improvement proposals, I think the people have always seen the beauty and want for an open green place for their families to enjoy and grow up at. I've been Coming to this beach park for years, and honestly there's something here for everyone both tourist and locals. This place is great for throwing birthday parties, bbqs, any type of gatherings. There's lots of free parking and the ocean here is always calm which is great for kids to swim. People come here for all sorts of activities, beside swimming I see a lot of surfers, paddle boarders, I've seen surfboard yoga, and much more. Theirs also tennis courts, and work out area, I've also seen people fishing near the reefs and I've seen people use the little lagoon area for mini sail boats, I could literally go on and on about how versatile this park is. I also have to recommend this place as a good place to get some exercise, I know joggers or people riding bikes love it here because of the long smooth cement pathway through out the entire park. One improvement I seen this past weekend was that the bathrooms had been nicely renovated. I'm glad it was done it was much needed. I also see grounds keeping workers always making their rounds taking out trash and cleaning bathrooms. I will say that there actually a lot of rules here which can be seen posted around the park but, in all honestly no one really enforces. For example pets aren't allowed on the beach neither is smoking or drinking but I've seen it on almost every occasion. It's kind of good and bad that the rules aren't strictly enforced here but nevertheless I still feel safe coming here because they always have police and even life guards near by. All in all this is a great park, but I can get pretty busy and Parking can fill up fast especially on holidays and weekends. read more

This Park/Beach was a short walk away from our Hotel, which was perfect!! I love running while on vacation and this place was 'Runner Central' every morning. Lots of runners here, as well as walkers, yoga, and swimmers. This Beach is a lot less crowded than Waikiki Beach, more of a chill vibe here, picnics and BBQs. And this Park is pretty big, you can drive through, lots of places to park. Plenty of restrooms, water fountains, and outdoor showers, which were great to get the sand off or just cool off from the heat. I really enjoyed running here, can't wait to do it again!!! read more

I loved this beach/park much more than the one behind our hotel. It was beautiful. It was hot and the water felt good. There are a lot of people there and it's so huge. Our Uber driver said that it was the largest beach/park and I believe it. When you walk for 45 minutes and are still across the street from the park and it continues, then...wow! Now the eats in and around there weren't fantastic. There was L & L Hawaiian, see my review. A mall with 103 eating places, isn't my idea of a good place for eats. If that was here, someone would have a cart with food, chile and spices to sell. But, over there? I'm surprised that someone didn't come up with such an idea. But the park looked nice. I'm wary of parks because I live in an area with lots of Canadian geese and yech! But they didn't seem to be an issue here. There was plenty of room on the beach, considering, all of the parking spaces were filled. Looking back, during my trip I should have come here daily, but I didn't. Oh well. It will give me something to look forward to upon my next trip. However, I have to say that this place provides a two for one experience. One location with a beach and all it has to offer on one side and the other side with a beautiful park, with beautiful trees and some lakes. read more

"Like go beach? We go beach!" Is the saying I heard when I was younger. Locals know this beach, I'd say everyone on Oahu have been here more than any other beach on the island. The pros. Want to surf? Can. Want to swim? Can cause the waves breaks much farther out. Want to paddle board or kayak? Of course. The beach itself is very accessible to all walks of life. The Ala Moana Mall is right across the street, and Waikiki is next door as well. Run or Walk yourself around Magic Island, bring your dog, do some yoga, have a bbq,- have some poke and beer, kanikapila and jam your guitar or ukulele, or get your radio and blast your music. Locals gather here to talk story with friends, tourists come here to see the sights residents take for granted sometimes, but appreciate it nonetheless. Ala Moana doesn't get the popularity and praise like Lanikai, or the Ohhh and awes of Ehukai (Pipeline) on the North Shore in the winter, but it has earned its place and respect among the locals and visitors alike. The beach itself has undergone some renovations to it over the years, it's pretty at sunrise and sunset. Whichever you choose, it's guaranteed a pic post on social media. There's plenty of parking, enough space for all ages, and one of the best parts of it is during the 4th of July, where locals camp out a day early to see the fireworks at Magic Island ! The weekends are the most crowded, so come early before 8am and find a perfect spot of your own. The flaws. Homeless population is evident in Hawaii and don't be surprised to see some here. Don't be scared, just be respectful. Don't litter also, it's an eyesore. Respect the land, and you'll get it back. But other than that, just chill back and relax, put your feet up because you're in Hawai'i. read more

Major public beach park minutes from multiple shopping centers and the harbor. Even neighboring parks connect to this main park area. Lots of walking paths, Pavillion, lawn bowling and tennis courts. Let me set your expectations correctly here for this beach. It is a casual, local, hangout beach that is conveniently right across from Ala Moana Center. If you are looking for a beach not overwhelmed with tourists yes it fits the bill. However, what it is moderately filled with are locals barbecuing and hanging out in tents, a mix of tourists and locals on the beach, joggers, a few homeless, and random people just casually walking through. It features a public bathroom on premises, small jungle gym for the kiddies, and an open field you can kick a soccer ball around. There is a big parking area connected to it, and a pier full of private boats nearby. The bathrooms arent very clean, on a scale of 1-10 I give them a 4. For the park overall I give it a 7. Definitely not nice enough for a romantic beach date, and don't play yourself and propose here either or you might get a "no" answer just on principal. There are nicer Hawaiian beaches particularly for romance, and I recommend that you choose elsewhere for that. Overall it is a convenient hangout spot to kill some time. Perfect place for the beach workout. I come here practically every day when I'm here. Fitness options are endless: - 5k run. Start at the main showers near the magic island parking lot. Run mauka (toward the mountain) and cut through the park to ala Moana boulevard. Take a right and follow the street and turn back into the park. Run the whole regional park (skipping magic island) following the road clockwise and then enter the east entrance to magic island and run the island. End at the showers - swim. Short laps to the magic island rocks or swim the length the the main beach - workout station. My favorite. Always a bunch of friendly dudes here doing pull ups and muscle ups and crazy stuff on the pull up bars Pretty much always get parking, expect on holidays when everyone and their brother is doing picnic read more

Happy to have this be my local park. It has many amenities. Great spot for paddle boarding, snorkeling, swimming and just hanging out on the promenade. You'll often see people skating biking and running too. They have tennis courts, V-ball, a pavilion for events, Places to BBQ, L & L Barbecue if you don't feel like doing it. People surf but you gotta go out past the reef. Great views of Diamond head and Waikiki in the background too. One of the drawbacks is occasionally there is some crime, whether homeless, drugs, theft, drunk people fighting. This is a city beach not an isolated country beach. So just be aware of your surrounds. its obvious who is up to no good. Setting up near the life guard tower helps at least be aware of the locations of park staff whether maintenance, concessions, lifeguards, etc. Say something to them if you see something keep our park enjoyable for all. I'd picnic with a group, run/bike through and play sports here but not really pass out alone on the beach. read more

I was unable to access the ocean area by crossing the pedestrian bridge at Queen Street. I know there has been a project to improve the Pavilion (McCoy) that stood in my (handicapped, wheelchair) way for some time, but it seems to have become a forever project. I would have had to navigate across a lawn with puddles of water from recent showers, just to take a look at the ocean. Is there a way to register a complaint about this multiyear roadblock for us wheeled ones? read more

This is the locals beach, so if your looking to go to a beach away from all the tourist this is the spot. Beach is very clean and lifeguard on duty. We were told that the locals don't like the tourist here but lucky for me everywhere we went everyone thought I was a local. I even got discounts because they thought I was a local. Parking is free but good luck finding one. The beach was pretty empty so I don't knoow where all the owners of those cars were. Beach sand was a little bit mixed with rocks and sea shells so be careful. Plenty of shopping about a 5-7 min walk from here so pretty close. read more
