My son came in as a walk in and he was sat very quickly. The hairdresser was very patient as my son tried to explain what he was looking for. Although I know he was very capable of doing a clipper cut as we'd watched him give one to the prior customer, he had an accurate sense that my son would want something a little difficult to describe and thus a scissor cut was a better bet. It can be hard for a teen to describe exactly what they are looking for and the stylist was really considerate and reassuring. He ended up leaving with a great haircut at a great price. Not only do they keep regular hours and are fully staffed (not that the bar is so low.. but the place I was going to seemed challenged in these respects) - but they are friendly, efficient, and throw in extras like the MOST relaxing scalp massage during shampoo! I like the transparency they have with their customers that they will try their hardest to get as close as possible the color you want but it won't be exact. I had Arven and Julie working on my hair making sure my hair was processing well with the bleach and that there was minimal banding from my previously bleached hair. I liked how attentive both of them were in making sure my hair came out flawlessly. Arven also did the wash, dry, blow, & styling and I would definitely recommend him if you want your hair styled as well! Love this place. I got recommended to xcellent hair bar after my friend went to the one in Queens but I didn't want to travel that far so I stuck to the one in Brooklyn. Before starting they were able to get a good gist of what I wanted to do with my hair as well as the price for it and they got started soon after. I arrived around 11am and left around 3pm. They did an amazing job with my hair and even offered me coffee or a cup of water during. I felt like they really did take care and attention to my hair compared to the past salon I've been to. I came here for a blowout. The wash was excellent. I requested a blowout. I was disappointed with my experience. First of all, the stylist didn't speak English and kept trying to curl my hair with a curler. The man didn't know how to hold it and kept burning his hands. I also didn't see him use any hair protection either. He put the curler on the ground. Yes on the ground then picked it up and used it on my hair multiple times. A customer was sitting on the chair previous to me and had her hair done. I sat on the same chair and I did not see them sanitize any of the equipment such as combs and supplies. This is a huge red flag and violates the regulations for hair salons to be hygienic and clean. I did not in fact see a license for the salon placed in the store. Besides all this, the guy kept trying to curl my hair and until I kept repeatedly asking this is not what I wanted. I clearly showed a picture of the style that I wanted but the man didn't seem to understand me. I was ready to walk out. I never had such a stressful hair experience. I had an appointment for a photo shoot and I was ready to walk out with my hair half done. At the end, another stylist came and helped fix the situation. He did the right blowout and it turned out much better which I appreciate. The moral of the story, why people put themselves for a job they can't master. Hair dressing is a serious job and not something I would pick up to do if wasn't experienced and mastered it. At the end, I felt bad and had to apologize for giving them an attitude but it is my right as a customer to receive what I pay for. I wish it wasn't this stressful and they were honest from the beginning on what they can or cannot do. This business could improve on hygiene. If any person had a skin condition or had a lice or something contagious that would be it. It is not safe to continue like this. I saw the sanitizing equipment on the tables yet they weren't used. Also improving on not allowing a stylist take a job they are not trained on, especially when it's a man that's not experienced with women's hair. read more

Hair wash was great. But the haircut, which is the most important part, did not meet expectations. My go-to guy left the company so I took a gamble and went with a random hairstylist. That was the worst decision I ever made. I need long hair for my wedding hairstyle so I only asked to cut one inch but with long layers. I expected to still have a lot of hair. The hairstylist knew I only wanted one inch and even pointed at my hair to make sure the spot was right. But he cut off at least three inches from the longest strands. I should've known he didn't have the skills when he dropped the comb twice. Then he spent forever only cutting one side of my hair. He kept cutting and cutting but I couldn't see the back so I thought he was working on the layers while preserving the length. He took forever cutting the hair too. He also took forever trying to style my hair, which I didn't ask for. And it didn't look good in the end anyway. I only realized my hair was so short when he pushed all the hair to the front. I was upset and complained and he denied it saying that my hair wasn't that long to begin with... I can't believe he tried to gaslight me and didn't own up to his mistake. Refer to the pictures to see that my hair was past my boob originally but now it doesn't even touch it. He cut at least three inches. The picture of me with long hair is from this month when holland ridge farms opened their tulip farm (proof that the picture is recent). The boss made me pay for the haircut that I did not ask for. I'm not sure why the haircut was $48 when i usually pay around $30. But even though he got his money he lost two customers (me and my husband). My husband went at least three times a year to get his haircut. The boss said sorry but sorry is not enough. read more

Service here is truly impeccable! Came for a blowout and styling and it may very much be the salon id frequent moving forward! I reached out through Instagram to inquire about their services and prices first before making appointments. We arrived for our 10:30 appt and was out by 12:30. When I go to hair salons, the hair washes are very impt to me as I feel they are very telling of the service you will be receiving. The person helping me was super nice- think he may be the owner or manager- the quick min head massage felt great and I could've used a few extra minutes of it ha. On to the styling, he asked what I was looking for and so I showed him the curls I wanted to achieve and he did just that. From beginning to end, it took about 40 or so minutes. He was quick but gentle! My niece who also came dropped her towel on the way to the chair and ended up wetting her jacket and shirt while waiitng for her turn- the manager blow dried it for her! It's been 2 years since I've had a professional haircut, and me still being very COVID conscience for my 10 month old, has made my decision really hard to find a place I felt safe visiting, as well as getting a great service. I reached out to Xcellent Hair Bar, sharing my concerns, and Jason wrote me back telling me to come be the last appointment of the night at 7PM. First off, this place is immaculately clean, with wonderful bright lighting and even an Instagram station that pictures are taken of all past customers. The staff was cleaning up for the night when I asked for my cut, wash, and blowout. To make things even more interesting, I told my stylist that he could do whatever he wanted to my hair, as long as I didn't get any layers. I felt beyond comfortable and greeted warmly by the staff, and was finally able to enjoy and relax a long awaited haircut. I loved how methodical my stylist was, and gave me such personal care! My hair is silky soft and my straightened blow out has given me that little bit of glow that I've been missing. They played an awesome playlist on the speakers that had me vibing the whole time. $32 was my total bill, which is BEYOND amazing for the treatment I received! They even offered me a punch card, that after the 10th visit, I would get a discounted service. I love that! What I love more is supporting Asian businesses. I have been doing so long before it was cool and the right thing to do. I'm a Brooklyn gal so I was looking for somewhere closer to home and realized that Xcellent had changed their Brooklyn location over to this Park Slope location (I had previously came to do a balayage and was happy with my last visit as well). Jason (the owner) immediately greeted me and made me feel so welcomed! I told him I wanted to get the lightest ash brown possible without damaging my hair. He was honest in that my roots may be slightly more yellow/red since I would not be bleaching it but he never once pushed me to do a balayage/bleach my hair even though it would profit him. I got men's haircuts from this place 4 times, and they've done a great job so far. Let me tell ya, i can't remember which guy it was but I got the fastest haircut ever. I have pretty long hair for a guy (think Han from fast and furious) and the dude was buzzing away at me with a razor like REALLY fast. At first, I was pretty pissed off, i thought "is he even taking this seriously? He's totally rushing through this." But after 12 minutes, we were done. Yes, including washing the hair. I look at the mirror and it was perfect. I was shocked. This was the fastest haircut ever, and mind you I didn't get a buzz cut. I went from very long hair to a medium length middle part hairstyle. I always come out the salon with the hair I want. Not sure why they have some negative reviews but I've been going to the xcellent chains from queens til I moved to Brooklyn in the past 5 years. All you have to do is come in with reference photos. I'm quite lenient when it comes to understanding everyone's hair history is different. They always try to get really close to what I ask for to accommodate to my hair type. I think everyone in the salon is really professional and nice. They ask before they cut. They ask if I like my hair color before I leave. It's their way of making sure we leave satisfied. I've gotten through 8 different hair looks with them and each one I've had a pleasant experience. And sure sometimes there is a language barrier but the manager is always there to be transparent with pricing and expectations. Anyways if you are worried about the language barrier I think reference photos of the color/haircut you want is super important. They are so talented I will always come back. read more

I made an appointment over the phone and was very clear about my hair type, 3c natural curls and asked if they could accommodate me. I was assured it would be no problem. When I arrived the man at the front desk looked shocked to see me walking in the salon. He asked why I was there, to which I replied I have an appointment for a blowout, but he quickly said we can't do your hair. We don't have enough experience, we can only do wavy hair. As a salon in Brooklyn of all places, that's not a good answer and it's clear Black women are not welcome in this establishment. There is no excuse for not getting trained to serve all people throughout your community. Or at least make it a point to hire people with diverse skill sets. Very disappointing! read more

I always wanted to get my hair done at an Xcellent salon but they were all in Queens, when I found out they opened one in Brooklyn I knew I had to make an appointment! My friend and I got our hair done yesterday at Xcellent Hair Bar. It was a great experience and I can't wait to come back! When walking in, the salon was well kept, clean and spacious. Our stylist Jason was professional and walked us through the entire process. My friend Michelle wanted a blonde ombre while I opted for ashy gray balayage. The entire visit took around 5.5 hours. Jason and his staff worked together efficiently and had great teamwork! One thing to note that I'm very impressed about is that they do a strand test so you're 100% sure you want that color. The prices were reasonable as well, they have a 20% off all services promotion right now! At the end of the visit, Jason gave me a detailed sheet on taking care of my new hair (something ALL salons should do!) I came in for ashy silver balayage with colorful highlights and Jason and his team executed it perfectly. Jason broke down the price and process before we got started. I have fine Asian hair that's never been bleached and my hair feels healthy and shiny. During the 7 hour bleach and tone process, they gave me water and made sure I was feeling comfortable and kept me updated on how the bleaching process was going. After the bleach and tone, Jason carefully colored my hair with green, blue and lavender and blended them beautifully. They also curled and styled my hair as well as helped me trim my uneven bangs. After the whole process, Jason gave me very detailed instructions on how to maintain the silver color and told me to call with any questions. Overall, I can't recommend Jason and co. enough!! My hair did not turn into spaghetti, it is still VERY strong and resistant. I definitely recommend added OLAPLEX to any hair changes involving color. They even advised me on aftercare after the process. From the moment I saw the outcome to the moment I stepped outside, I could not stop smiling i had a HUGE smile across my face. They took their time to make sure they didn't kill my hair and surprisingly the bleach process and toning was painless. This was my first experience with coloring my hair a vibrant shade and they did such a fantastic job. Jason and Jenny matched my final color to what I wanted perfectly, and the quality of the color was so lovely. I didn't even know such colors could be achieved in black hair without filters or photoshop. Afterwards, they even gave me detailed personalized instructions on how to maintain the color and health of my hair. I was also super happy with the haircut that Jason gave me--he took extra time at the beginning to figure out exactly what I wanted, gave me advice on what might look good, and then incorporated all of that into the final product. Just as with the coloring process, he was meticulous about making sure that it was perfect and that I was happy with the results. I haven't loved a new haircut this much in a long time.
