The guys there took a look at it and fixed it within minutes. I proceed to ask, "how much do I owe you guys?". The guys there said, "No cost". I am posting this not because that the guy took care of my son's bike, but they were genuinely nice people and you can feel it. this is a pretty road heavy shop, but they are getting mountain/singlespeeds in. I've never bought a bike here, but i have bought enough parts to (literally) build over a dozen bikes. i tend to have very specialized needs for parts ( the 36 hole flip flop wide flange 135mm hub!!!) or a problem with an old bike. i just ask the mechanics and they are more than willing to give me advise to try myself and i know i can bring the project bike in if i get in trouble. the staff is really helpful in doing research for parts, frames, etc... just dont go on a weekend in the spring and summer (as with most bike shops) i'd give it 4 stars if they didnt have such a focus on roadie stuff, but hey this is a flat island, not the north shore. yes the parking spaces are small, but i bike to the shop so no worries. read more

Bought my Specialized StumpJumper FSR comp here. It was my first expensive mountain bike purchase. I knew exactly what type of bike I wanted and especially the skill level involved. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable. Before purchasing the bike, they took a test fit the make sure the stand over height was okay and set all the pressure settings in the shocks for me. My only problem is, yes this place is small, so if you are looking for a bike to take home right away in your exact specs and needs, they might not have it in stock. They also carry certain brands of bikes and not a wide selection of brands to choose from. read more

It was my first time in a bike shop and I didn't know what to expect.All I needed was a bike rack. I'm browsing around and I see a 3300 dollar bike for sale and I was worried that the sales guy would treat me bad because I was only spending 50 bucks. I was wrong. It was a tall black guy with glasses and he treated me like I was spending millions of dollars. He installs the bike rack on my car, gave me tips on some good trails and told me that everything he sells has a lifetime warranty and to come back if I wasn't happy. I was flabbergasted with how good the service was and I will shop there more often. read more

These people are very nice and friendly, they will answer questions and help you out with whatever you are looking for or need assistance with. That being said, I have not actually bought anything here. Maybe I'm a cheap bastard because I don't remember bikes costing like $450. I remember coming here and saying to myself "sweet! I'm gonna buy a bike today" and when I say the price tags I remember thinking "WTF!" I won't deduct too many stars because its not thier fault that bikes cost that much i guess. I also do not know much about the biking community and what's considered a great product as far as bikes go, but I mean I've seen Bikes that were just as nice at Walmart or Target for 1/3 of the price. It took me a long time to write this, but I'm not sure why. Actually I do know why. It's a secret and I cannot tell it. I won't tell it. Curiosity is going to kill this cat. Back to the story aka Yelp review. I came here because uber and lyft rates went up, but really I should have bought a bicycle at least a year ago to save on my commute. Then I had a light bulb moment and said duh Andrew, go get a bike and save money ya cheap bastid. I came in on a Saturday and was helped by Jim. He is an absolute joy as I'm sure anyone has met him knows. Not only that, but he's very passionate about bicycling, which you will discover after talking with him for 3.2 seconds. He let me trial a few bikes that Saturday. I didn't want to make a rash decision, so I went home. The next day I was greeted by Alex. He was very helpful as well, and helped me make my final decision. I love the bike I got and it's made my commute so much more enjoyable. I had a great experience here and ended up with an awesome bike. My passion for bikes has grown so much since my purchase I might apply for a job! Ok a bit of sarcasm, but I seriously could not be happier with my purchase. I also bought a helmet, pump, and bike lights here. The lights are rechargeable via USB, so cool! I am no judge of bike shops, but I know when people are helpful and seem to care whether you buy the best item for your own purposes. I was helped by Gene, test-rode a trio of bicycles, and managed to buy one I really liked for not too much $$$. Note: Gene pointed out to me that their 3-month price guarantee covers their own sales, and that therefore I should come back for the Father's Day sale and let him give me some money back. Solid. The parking spaces are pretty damn small, but I don't see that as shaving a star off. Gene also went above and beyond when I realized that my beautiful new Globe wouldn't fit into my itty bitty Saturn. Off came the wheels, in went the bike, and all was well. Great Help and the website is informative- I used it to do some research before I bought my bike. I did go to a few stores and most locals stores had great service. I bought a 2011 Giant Avail from them (Stephanie) about a year ago and it fits me PERFECT. I'm doing the California Lifcycle ride from SF to LA and they absolutely fitted me to the best bike, I have no physical issue at all and have ridden well over 500 miles in just training. Before I start I have to put it out there that I am completely new to the world of bikes, to the point my husband had to pretty much teach me how to use the gears. I went to many bike shops while trying to decide which bike to get, but ultimately we came back to Alameda Bicycle as the staff there had been so helpful to us and they have a great service plan for free. I wandered in just to admire and stare at an entry-level clearance bike that I still couldn't afford. I was planning to just look at it and dream of saving up for it someday. An employee (sorry, didn't get his name) saw me, greeted me and asked me if I wanted to look at it, or take it down, or see how it fit me. Figuring that he was busy and I shouldn't waste his time, I told him that I couldn't afford it and wasn't going to take up his time. Despite that, he was so nice! He still asked me if I wanted to try it or get fitted, explained that they have a 6-month no-interest program, and told me that the bike price would stay at the clearance rate until it was sold. They also do free tune-ups for the lifetime of the bikes they sell. What a lovely shop. Someday, when I have the money for a new bike, I'll definitely be back. read more

I had noticed my front wheel moving a little more than was suppose to while I was going into a turn. Got off my bike only to find out I had a front hub missing bearings, so it wobbled to one side way unevenly. With not having any brakes to begin with, and spokes missing on the front hub, I decided to go to Alameda Bicycle. I stopped in after going to the intital store which was closed on this particular pre-holiday observance. Awesome it is, for Alameda Bicycle to open and help a rider out. Thank you. Upon entering, I encounter friendly staff with a pleasant greeting. You know, one can always tell a place by how well the vibe is present, upon entering an establishment. I was introduced to the onsite bike mechanic, from the greeter, with a few questions of what I needed and was in the bike store for that day. After telling him my vision and what I wanted to do with my bike, the bike mechanic went to search for the parts I had in mind for my particular bike. While the bike mechanic was in search for the parts, I looked around the store to see what I can locate, like front/back brakes, hand pump and front/rear lights. The Bike mechanic then came back after a few and showed me what he had. Rims and tires he brought forth. I had liked the rims, but due to me using/wanting free coast (not on these new rims and would also have to change out the new rear sprocket to a free coast), brakes, they'd rub off the paint finish from these new particular rims. The tires he showed to me were approved of. We then turned to an alternative set of rims that had coast and could accommodate using brakes without any rim finish wear issue. Both Scott and Nate, were bike mechanics that had helped me. At first, they were so busy, they were to only sell me the parts, and I'd install everything. Then one of them took the initiative and started to take my bike in back and post it up to install the new parts. Brakes I had to still install as was a few customers coming in and out. Busy day it was for them on New Year's Eve. All was set on the bike. The remaining parts, front/back brakes/calipers and front/rear lights, I bagged up and took with me. I took the old tires and inner tubes with me. Old rims I had left to Alameda Bicycle to recycle with how they choose. I've always had gone to Alameda Bicycle since childhood when I lived in Alameda. This place always has whatever you need for your bike. Whether it's a Fixie, Gear changer, BMX or a kids bike. The kids bike translation program is excellent. The crew at Alameda Bike is the best. When I moved to Alameda I needed some work done on a bike I bought elsewhere. They were so backed up it was going to take two weeks so I went elsewhere. Then I was talking to a friend because I needed to buy a new bike. I mentioned this and was told that it was because it was the beginning of spring and they gave such great service. I've bought two bikes from them now, taken free repair classes, special ordered accessories, and they also run the Fruitvale Bike station (which is usually able to do my repairs while I'm at work). When I bought my latest bike I was waiting for a windfall to come in. I must have been by the shop to test ride for weeks, and they were always wonderful. I'd recommend anyone go here. read more

Alameda Bicycle is definitely a fantastic place to buy a new bike! My girlfriend and I both bought brand new bikes there this past summer after doing a ton of research and checking out at least 4 different stores in SF and the East Bay. Needless to say, I haven't had a bike for years and it is definitely one of the best investments I have made in a very long time! The staff were incredibly helpful, patient and positive throughout the entire process. They let us test drive many different bikes and gave us great advice based on our individual preferences. The bike I finally decided on was back-ordered for 6 months, so they went out of their way to find me a similar bike with way better parts for just a little bit more than the bike I chose. The entire process happened over a couple weeks, and it seemed like no matter who we dealt with they were always super friendly and helpful! They also have a lifetime maintenance plan that comes with every bike they sell! i bought the etrike with 1000 watt battery lucky to have 80 miles on it . now when i charge battery push power button all i get is the red light and then it goes out and no power, bought bike in july 7 2019. not happy . read more

as a semi professional Bike Rider on the Tour In My Head, I would have to admit that I have total and complete credibility when it comes to anything related to biking, bike shopping, and bikeability...I first started coming to Alameda Bike after I moved from the South Bay...over there I began riding with the San Jose Bike Party contingent to network and drink booze on every 3rd Friday of the month...this love for biking and boozing quickly turned into a very serious passion for riding (sober)...over the years, ive taken my bike to a handful of places...just like finding a good mechanic for your car, ive found that finding a reliable place to have my bike fixed, tuned, or upgraded was very difficult and very inconsistent...that is, UNTIL I found Alameda Bicycle. since the first time I brought my bike here for a tune up, the folks here at Alameda Bicycle have been amazing...the one thing I can guarantee you will find here is years and years of experience at their craft...these guys might work here as a job, but most of them seem to enjoy it as a passion, and that is very hard to find... whether you are looking to buy your first bike or your 100th one...the folks here at Alameda Bicycle will be able to accommodate your needs...I recently signed up for the MS BIKE RIDE from San Francisco to Sonoma (150 mile over 2 days) and the owner and his staff have given me information on everything from what to eat during the ride and how to train for the distance of the event...along with all the necessary gear to get me thru the 150 miles of road... i recently took a friend to buy their first bike here at Alameda Bicycle and they were a bit skeptical of the price of the goods here..i explained it to them and to YOU like this...certain things in life, you need to pay for "quality"...if you buy a pair of leggings at Forever 21, then don't get all bent out of shape if you find a hole in it 2 days after you bought them! if you wanted leggings that were going to last, you should've at least gone to Banana Republic or Neiman Marcus!!! ive found that the prices here at Alameda Bicycle are not necessarily cheap, but in no way are they overpriced. biking/riding isn't a cheap hobby, and with bikes and accessories, eventually you GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR...do you want a 400 dollar bike that needs to be replaced in 2 years, or are you willing to pay 1000 dollars for a bike that will last 10 years? If 0 starts could be given that's EXACTLY what this shop would get and deserves. Where do I begin? Well let's say I went to this shop three times. First time I went to see what products they carried as well as inquire about getting my steer tube trimmed on my fixed gear. They were very short when I explained why I had visited the shop that day so I just ended up leaving and sleeping on the idea of taking my bike there. After sleeping on it, the following day I called to see if they take walk in's and the person informed me that most likely it wouldn't be done that day if I took it in, but it possibly would be done Saturday some time. When getting there it was to no surprise that there was a lack of greetings and customer service just like my first time there. After maybe 20 mins of waiting finally someone called me back to the service computer. After speaking with the guy for about 10-15 mins about how I wanted my steer tube, spacers and stem put back on I figured for sure they would have it down. I mean how hard is it really to follow such simple directions...right? So I left the bike there with the over night and this was quite possibly the first time I ever felt questionable leaving my bike at a shop. The next day I received a call informing me my bike had been finished. So I showed up to the shop later in the after noon and the second they pulled the bike out I knew that they completely didn't listen to a word I had said. Not only was the order of my spacers completely wrong but I was missing one...funny thing is I specifically told them ahead of time that I wanted ALL my unused parts back...hmm...I guess they enjoy pocketing their customers unused products (I wish I would of known that a head of time). As for the bike, I informed them that I was unhappy with how it looked and how it was not even close to how I had asked. They LARGE sloppy white guy (and in no way am I referring to large in a good physically fit way...quite the opposite in this situation) seemed to groan as I told him he needed to fix it. About 10 mins later he brought my bike back out and I seriously didn't think it could have gotten worse but it did. Not only were the spacers still out of order, but he also put a cheap ugly carbon spacer that wasn't even mine on my bike! REALLY? At this point I was beginning to think this was a joke. Like it seriously couldn't be possible for someone to mess up such a simple task! I informed the same guy that I was unpleased and he STILL needed to fix this! He stared over at the coworkers and let out a god awful groan that only a beast could be capable of letting out. To no surprised he rolled his eyes and told me I would have to wait 1 hour because he would and I quote "need to disassemble my head set"...hmm...ok? Not really sure if I'm following you there "BIG" guy. Needless to say he yanked my bike forcefully around and took it back again for the now third time...YES...I did in fact say THIRD time. And yes...I'm sure you can guess what happened next. No, third times aren't always a charm...especially when you take your bike to Alameda Bicycle. Sadly the bike was still done wrong. I think what's even more sad to think about is how easy/simple of a job this was and could of been for a REAL bike shop. The fact that it takes three times and you still get something so simple wrong just amazes me. So in closing...all I can say is that if you have a custom bike and your detail oriented don't take your bike here. The workers here are only focused on numbers and have no regard for their customers needs, nor do they have any clue how to pay attention to detail. On a side note if you own a super cheap bike, perhaps something from Walmart or Target and don't really care too much about it...well then these are your guys. They will give you your bike back with hopefully everything back on it. As for my future cycling needs I'll continue to go out of my way to MASHSF in SF and now Cycle City (the place that I took my bike to after this joke of a place couldn't get it right). BOTTOM LINE...the ONLY reason this shop is still open is because of its location. Put this shop anywhere else besides down town with the same staff and I can guarantee it would have failed years ago. They have no common sense and have a complete disregard for their customers needs. Shops like that don't last and certainly shouldn't. If I could do it over I'd never come within a 100 miles radius to this shop. The people are unprofessional and the shop staff doesn't even come close to meeting my standards in doing one of the simplest jobs possible. Do yourself the favor and avoid this shop at all cost. They also offer a great Sunday class to teach kids to ride on two wheels. I was skeptical at first, but Gene was very informative and explained there was a different teacher student. Sure enough she ended the session and was able to ride on two weeks. A few weeks of practicing and she is a pro. I gotta give it up to Gene it worked and I could not have been happier. These guys are the BEST. I love that they are Giant specialists too. But I recently had my bike shipped, and I put it together mostly myself, but I realized I needed two new tires. When I called the store shortly before closing, they offered to stay a few minutes late. They got my back back to health and fully fixed in less than ten minutes. I truly am so thankful. Bought giant roam 2 from them two years ago for 733.65 and they said tune is free. I have never gotten a tune once from them ever since. I call before about a tune and they said wait is about week. Today when i went in to get a flat tire fix they told there is 40 people ahead of me for tune up. I ask a service tech a question and he seems to be agitated for some reason and told me not to talk. It wasnt like i was being obnoxius and disrespectful or anything it was just a few simple questions. I want to know how long it takes to get flat tire fix and whether i can get my proof of purchase receipt so incase i want to sell my bike i can show to interested buyer. I will never buy anything from this place ever again in my life time. read more

This was my first and then final destination as I sought to purchase my first road bike. I visited the shop twice: in my initial visit, Scott helped me take a Giant for a spin. But ultimately, I decided to visit various EB bike shops to test a few before buying. Eight shops later, (with several offering little to no women's road bike selections), I landed back at Alameda Bicycle. Their service and commitment to fitting you in the correct bike is excellent. Stephanie helped me out on visit #2; she spent a substantial part of her afternoon helping me test (and retest) several bikes. Everyone in the shop had great attitudes and were extremely affable with all their customers. Highly recommending visiting this place whether you're looking to buy or get some great service! read more
