I rented vehicles from Budget Hilo for many years until recently when they did not address my complaint. Consequently, I switched to Alamo/Enterprise and am totally satisfied with the service, prices and vehicles. I just rented a vehicle this past weekend and unfortunately ran into a problem with the key fob. In a matter of minutes, they resolved the issue and replaced the vehicle! Yes, it was a little inconvenient, but it wasn't their fault! The best customer service I've received in years! I'll be renting from Alamo wherever I travel! Thank you! read more

It was easy to book the vechicle I wanted online with car and booster seats. The Hilo Alamo staff were very nice and receiving inspector was very thorough (MAKE A VIDEO RECORDING OF YOUR ENTIRE CAR BEFORE LEAVING THE LOT. The return inspector went straight for a dent i didnt notice upon pick up, but because i took a video of the whole car prior to leaving the lot that showed the dent it was dismissed). It was nice getting a support text from customer service after receiving the car that i could reach out to them if i had any questions or concerns. I also loved having the option to modify my rental for an extention because I needed an extra 30 minutes on my original return time. Will definitely use alamo again. read more

I locked in a few weeks before my trip and got my car at - $134.00; the day before the Ironman triathalon, the same quote was $834. - gas up at the local Costco in Kona before returning the car back to the rental company, it's the cheapest gas around, and gas on the Big Island is expensive. - Driving from Hilo and returning to Kona saved me $145.00 and most tourists would want to check out both sides of the island, anyway. We couldn't check into our hotel in Kona until 4 PM so we checked out Hilo and drove over. Last time we did this, we spent a few nights at the Volcano Village Estates by Volcanos National Park and had a great time. SERVICE: Super friendly; everyone from the check-out at Hilo (awesome young man), to the return and ticket agent and the shuttle driver in Kona. THE CAR: My agreement for the price of $134 was a "Toyota Corolla" or similar. I lucked out and got a DODGE CHARGER!!!! I am very spoiled now coming home to my own "Toyota Corolla" or similar. The brakes and acceleration were crazy good on that car. It had a sunroof. It was clean. It was hella sexy. The trunk space may be too small if you have more than two suitcases, but it was great as we had one carry-on and one medium suitcase. RETURN: Kona location return hours start from 0530 AM. We got there early and returned the car at 0730 for our 1020 flight out because we have had bad experiences with Hawaiian Air (read my reviews). This time we flew Southwest Airlines, which was way better (read my reviews). Last time we used Alamo also and I forgot to leave a review, but I've never been "steered" wrong with Alamo. Originally picked up our rental at Alamo Kona airport but we were in Hilo the next day just touring the area when we saw a roach in the rental vehicle. We killed it then left to go shopping, when we came back one of the kids picked up the seat and a bunch of roaches started coming out. Of course I was freaking out and trying to look for the nearest Alamo. We drove here immediately and talked to the manager. She very quickly got us into a brand new van with only 10 miles on it. This van was so high tech and really made the rest of our trip amazing. So grateful for the great service given! read more

We picked up the car in Kona and dropped off in Hilo. Alamo quoted $549.13 (see attached) for the week. They charged us $1,682.16 additional for drop-off in Tallahassee,FL. What the heck? I called Alamo. They referred me to a manager Cesar who is in Guatemala, gezz this keeps getting worse. I asked that they reverse the charges as the car is in Hilo. He said he can put in a request. I asked do you know that Tallahassee is in North America and Hawaii is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean? That it is physically impossible for me to drive/drop the car in Florida from Hawaii especially in a week? Things that make you go hmm. I'll call again tomorrow. CHECK YOUR CAR TOP TO BOTTOM!!! RENTED A CAR and didn't check the BOTTOM rocker panel while it was raining. Long story short, when I returned my vehicle there was damage that I didn't notice on the lower half of the vehicle (rocker panel) when I picked it up. I honestly didn't check the BOTTOM of the car. Me causing the damage was impossible since I stayed on main roads and only went in and out of hotel property. Had I noticed this I would've notated it on card or heck could've put it on the card before returning the vehicle if I was shady. My initial experience was great but upon final return it felt a bit shady. But my fault for not checking the bottom of the vehicle. L Sadly, there's only Thrifty, Dollar and Alamo. Through a national car reservation with emerald aisle rental I was escorted to Alamo instead. They claimed CC problems although it was used at one of their other locations in AZ that morning. Staff did their business respectfully and although you should not expect your status perks (choice of vehicle was 'that one' or go back inside) just appreciate your introduction to island time. Three stars is honestly on par and good lord the course is beautiful (but the greens are slow). Make sure anything you want is negotiated beforehand and expect changes to near meet what you desire for the start to your trip. read more

Good ol' Alamo, almost 99% of the time cheaper than the rest, was again, via Hotwire. At ITO, all of the rental car companies' desks and car lots are conveniently located just across the street of the terminal, so there was no need to wait for a shuttle. When we arrived at the desk, there was no line. It almost felt like the airport was closed, which was great! CHECK IN: A friendly male associate checked us in, asked about additional insurance, and didn't waste time trying to upsell us to a higher car category. Loved that, thank you! THE CAR: I booked the compact car category as it was priced the same as an economy. We ended up with a Ford Focus with 39,000+ miles on the odometer. Inside, the car was dirty, seats stained with white splotches we were told was sunscreen (I really hope so), and the exterior sporting a large front bumper scrape and rear bumper rubber trim damage. Though the worst part was the shuddering transmission, which after researching found out it's a well-known problem for this model. When accelerating after a stop from first to second gears, the whole car would shudder like it had a manual transmission driven by a first-time driver. Absolutely annoying. CHECK OUT: When we pulled in, all of their return stalls were open, again no line, and we were promptly greeted by a female associate and checked out lickety split! TIP: Be sure to check all around the car for damage BEFORE leaving the parking lot as that's where the attendant is. There is NO checking out with an attendant after that like at most locations. OVERALL: Always lower prices than its competitors, usually good cars (sans for this turd), good service. read more

An additional "A" for Alamo. This is the third Alamo location I've rented a car from (the first two being LAX and OGG), and I am pleased to share that their terrific customer service also extends to ITO. NOTE: Reservation for 2.5 days made at costcotravel.com. PICK UP: This location is LITERALLY across the street from ITO. Literally. When my friend told me that all we had to do was walk across the street to the rental car area, I didn't think it was that simple. It really was, believe it or not. Very convenient. A small line had formed the morning of our arrival, but the two agents at the Alamo counter assisted each customer ahead of myself in a timely manner. The agent (sadly her name escapes my memory) that helped me process my transaction was helpful, knowledgeable, and very friendly. She expertly processed my reservation, and of course did ask me about any upgrades or additional insurance (all of which I politely declined). My reservation was for a full size car, which wasn't immediately available. She politely asked me I wouldn't mind waiting about five minutes for the car to be dropped off onto the lot. Five minutes later, we loaded our luggage into a Hyundai Sonata and were on our way to see the sights of the Big Island. DROP OFF: There are numerous signs to direct customers to the rental car return section of ITO. When you finally arrive at the rental car lot, make sure to look for the appropriate signage for your rental car company. Here's where it gets simple: PARK your car in the STALLS that are designated for Alamo returns. An attendant will check you out and provide you with a receipt/total of your rental duration. Unload the car, walk across the street, and you're on your way to catch your flight. BOTTOM LINE: Another positive rental experience with Alamo. Wonderful customer service. I would not hesitate to rent from Alamo locations in other cities. read more

Update 12/1/2016 I spoke with Philip, the Alamo Rentals Manager just now. He was genuinely emphatic and listened to everything I had to say, and he even thanked me for calling to let him know what had happened. WHO DOES THAT?! Philip was very apologetic for how we were treated by the attendant taking in the vehicle, and he accepted full responsibility for the actions of his staff... again, WHO DOES THAT? And he thanked me for the opportunity to improve his staff's performance! Whuuuuut? As far as managers go, Philip is top-notch. He did everything right: from listening to me, to apologizing and promising to speak to this particular attendant, and even going so far as to thank me for my business and asking me how he could win us back to Alamo. That was Management Level: EXPERT in action right there! And you know what, he went above and beyond to make sure I was happy with the resolution! Thank YOU, Philip! read more

I had reserved a Hyundai Santa Fe SUV when booking through Costco travel for 10 days. On arrival at Hilo that car was nowhere to be found. Aaron offered me a minivan which I did not want, then a Tahoe. The Tahoe seemed to wide for some of the narrow streets and caused parking problems. Tahoe also had scratches on front bumper. Aaron said that is fine they only worry about the metal not front or back bumpers. So take a picture which will time stamp any damage you didn't report. But it is best to do a walk round and report it. So the next day I asked again for the car I reserved but it would be arriving too late and I would be on a Mauna Kea stargazing tour, so could not pickup and Keagan offered me a Jeep Wrangler, that was a bit if an issue for kids in back had a hard time getting out of as had no running boards. Suffice to say those brakes on Jeep squeaked every time you used them, did not feel safe so called later and asked again for the Hyundai Santa Fe which they did not have so Shaila offered me another Jeep whose brakes squeaked less but still squeak as I am writing this. The cheapest gas on Hilo is Tesoro and Costco on Kona side, feel free to use gas buddy app to find if traveling about the swing in prices can be as high as 60c per gallon. Was $2.57 in June 2016 I may try to switch out the Jeep at Alamo on Kona side to get the SUV I reserved. Staff were friendly and apologetic but I still wish I got the car I reserved the Hyundai Santa Fe! read more

1 word to describe Alamo car rental... AWSOME! And I'm usually pretty skeptical and worried about car rental issues on trips. My debit car was accepted at the Hilo International Airport location with NO PROBLEMS. We were in and out with our Santa Fe all wheel drive in just minutes. And the best part was, no deposit! In fact my card wasnt even charged until 2 days AFTER I returned rental. I even saved 50$ from the original reservation for Jeep Wrangler.... Which brings me to my next thought. Although the all wheel drive Santa Fe was a beautiful car, I wish my reservation for the Jeep Wrangler was available. Unfortunately it wasnt. So keep in mind what you reserved online and what they actually have that day might be different. Thats the only downside. Otherwise great company and very friendly staff. While I looked in the parking lot and saw an SUV sitting there the attendant made us wait. We were given that same car 4 hours later. Shame on them for this type of service. As we were driving over the mountains to Hilo from Kona we encountered an "engine" light malfunction. Luckily, we were able to make it to Hilo without incident. Zero line, great customer service, affordable rental! I booked my reservation prior to my trip from Oahu to Big Island and as my travel dates approached I decided I wanted to upgrade my car but no vehicles of the class I wanted were available online. What's nice about the Hilo location is the rental booth is across the street from the arrivals, no shuttle needed! I got to the booth and asked Gili if there had been any trucks or Jeeps returned early as I was hoping to upgrade. She checked for me and got me a Jeep for a really great upgrade price for my 6 day trip and I was off in a matter of minutes! When I returned the car the attendants were very helpful and it only took a matter of minutes again. Don't forget to fill out the car damage check before taking off though as there won't be someone helping you with it and there is not one of those booths you stop at to turn the sheet into. I hadn't filled it out (it would have been nice for the attendant to review it with me) and when I returned there was minor damage to the bumper that I was unaware of, not sure if it was there when I rented or if something happened but I'm being held liable. Luckily I had the appropriate coverage and the Alamo claims department and my credit card are being very helpful in this matter. As most people know about car rental reservations, you don't need a credit card hold for the rates. I've had my trip to Hilo set for 8 months prior and you bet I was montoring the rates every week or so to get the best possible rate. My target was getting a midsize or standard SUV due to unpredictable rains and lava roads. The rates for the this part of the Big Island was rather high unlike the more populated tourist locations. OK, I'll get to bottom of this... From another vendor, I gave up a reserved mid-size "Ford Escape" SUV at $426/week I had made months ago for a $487.00/week offer for a "Grand Cherokee" standard SUV offer from Costco. With this upgrade I at least knew I had a capable 4WD. At the Alamo Hilo rental desk I was presentented with a GMC Terrain AWD w/ a 4 cyl engine. I questioned if this was a standard sized SUV, and they stated that it was. I think most of us who are car enthusiasts would agree, a GMC Terrain is in no class with a Grand Cherokee, Explorer, 4Runner, etc. The Terrain is with the likes of the Rav4, Escape, Rogue. I'm not the type to raise hell in front of my family who are tired from our long plane ride, so I got jipped $61. My lesson, Alamo and possibly most rental companies will jip you. Get the lower class car at the lower rate, then bargain up. This was the ONLY bad part of our wonderful time in the Hilo/Puna area. read more

Service at Hilo Airport was good. Would be nice to have a quick check in since there are only 2 computer stations. Return was a breeze. We had a Dodge Dart - it was a little busted up here and there. What surprised me is the inattention to detail when cleaning the car. It was free from clutter and debris on floor however the car could've used an internal wipe down, pretty sticky. We rented through Costco which was cheaper than directly booking with Alamo (even being an Alamo Insider) and we got a free driver add-on. By far I would say no matter how you book it's a good deal. read more

What a terrible experience... They charged me twice the price of the rent (2 times nearly 600 USD, which is 1200USD). Therefore this amount has blocked my credit card, and I have to pay for an hotel in France (for my job) and because my credit card is not working they will not let me spend the night inside... For the first time of my live I will sleep outside with my baggage because of this stupid rule of Alamo who charge first the amount of your reservation, then charge again the real amount you have to pay without releasing the first charge. I am so disappointing to have to spend a night in the street because of this company . I called them , send 3 mails but so far I have absolutely no answer. read more

Great service! Walked in as a man was raising his voice demanding a Tahoe, he had no reservation. The staff remained calm, reassured the man. Gave him the Tahoe. I check-in to pick up my Tahoe that I had reserved, everything went extremely well. Walk out to the parking lot and see the man getting into the only Tahoe on the lot. I went back to the lot attendant to ask the staff if he was sure they gave me the right vehicle. He informed me there was a situation earlier and they had no other choice but to upgrade me to a 2019 Cadillac, so that we could both be happy! On the way home I forgot my cellphone in the Cadillac. Came to Hilo for a double celebration, my birthday and 3rd year marriage anniversary. Booked a room, air, and car package...rental car from Alamo. Pick up time was at 8am and Peggy was our rental agent. She certainly help start our celebration on the right foot and blessed us with a better car than what was part of our package. My husband is not really a small guy and the car we were given would certainly keep him comfortable while driving us around. She even suggested a place for dinner for our anniversary. Spent a week in Hilo with a red convertible Camero. I enjoyed the car, but was concerned that lighting is insufficient to adequately discover old damage at night. It did not result in a conflict on this trip, but arguing old damage after the fact can be a nasty fight and with no documentation, the customer will lose 9 times out of 10. I was concerned because we discovered a decent door ding on the passenger door when we saw the car in daylight for the first time and it only had 1400 miles. Fortunately, they were not thorough when the car was checked in so the ding was never questioned. Oddly, for a car with 1400 miles, the wiper fluid was completely empty. It took a full gallon. I would have thought that fluids get checked before rentals are released to a new customer. On the plus side, the weekly rate was 20% lower than Hertz or Enterprise compact rates. read more

The attendants were unhelpful. All the said is ,"we don't accept walk ups." It was 600am on a Friday. I didn't know I needed a previous booking- it's hilarious at 6am. So I went to breakfast frustrated and on the same day booked a car on the phone while on the way there (passenger). Ready for pickup at 8am. When I went back they were not helpful. I asked," why didn't you just tell me to book it on my phone and get one out of the parking lot? She had no good response. I got a recommendation from a friend and I will never use them again.
