Hilo International Airport-ITO, I love ITO every single time I visit the Big Island, I always fly in to Hilo, then drive over to Kona and leave to HNL from that side. So cool to get to do this on the Big Island. Sometimes I get confused returning the car and the change of airports. Did you know that abstract collab, consisting of Hilo abstract artist Kristie Fujiyama Kosmides, Hilo filmmaker Tracey Niimi and ukulele virtuoso, Jake Shimabukuro creates multimedia project, including murals at Hilo International airport, to show the island it is more than just a place to visit, get inspiration. Allow time to check it out next time you're here! Lets get back to ITO, omg the wood/Koa furniture reminds me of small kid time, I had the exact kine wood sofa too, it just brings back great memories, it sure brings me joy every single time I land here. hehe. besides that, feeling nostalgic and like old school, I just love this small kine, airport. Love it every time I see the "ALOHA" sign made out of white rocks upon exiting, I know we are here at Hilo especially with the morning rain and chilly weather once we get out of the airport. This airport serves the district of Hilo, Hamakua, Kau and Puna. Having to lug around heavy suit cases for business around I really don't want to work up a sweat then stand in the hot sun waiting for a flight. The Hilo airport is enclosed. It has AC. Nice rattan furniture on the 1st floor with tables to relax in before boarding your flight. It might seem like a ghost town some times. Okay most of the time, but that's fine. The quiet solitude allows me to take a nap before i board the plane to take another nap. read more

Small airport in Hilo. They only have southwest and Hawaiian flying in here; and only limited gates, maybe 7-10?. You have to put your bags through scanner to ensure you don't have any fruits, plants etc before checking them / going through tsa. Relatively quick to get through tsa. There is very limited food options - a food market and gift shop, but looks like they are updating part of the airport. The gates are on the top level, and waiting area is on the bottom. They have car rentals here too. read more

Once you deboard the plane and pass the baggage claim area, there are benches to sit and wait while one person in your party goes to get the rent a car. Very convenient across the street to pick up your car. The landscape is well maintained with hapu tree fern. It's not crowded and actually quite quiet, easy to enter the TSA checkpoint and head to your gate. On the ground level there is lots of seating in a homey setting. There's a shop and restrooms. You will actually need to go up one level to board your flight. read more

The Hilo airport is a wonderful small town airport with an aloha feel. Everything is close and easy to access. The people are so friendly (even TSA). The lobby is filled with Hawaiian furniture made from Koa wood. Hawaiian tunes play gently over the intercom. There are displays describing local history and large pieces of tropical artworks. Ticketing is outside under pergolas of tropical flowers. Parking is easy and close. Rental cars are directly across the street. There is a small gift store in the lobby selling Hawaiian themed goodies and a snack bar serving Mai Tais, beer and wine. I had a bowl of miso soup, which was delicious. Rest rooms are large and clean. They could use some electrical outlets for charging phones....but then again, maybe not. read more

No Vegas Jackpot Machines, No San Francisco Mini Museum, No London Harrod's! And you know what? This is what makes Hilo International Airport such a good airport! One of the smallest international airports I've come across. Trust, I've been to many. ITO will do just fine! Located just ten minutes from downtown Hilo, a stroll across the street for your rental car, or a 10-minute wait for Uber. Life is good in small town Hilo! So loosen your shoe laces, unbuckle your belt, and remember you're not in a big city anymore! Okay, you won't exactly die of boredom here as there's an abundance of vintage rattan furniture you can relax on and do your IG uploads or finish that Yelp novella! Hilo International Airport looks very small from the outside but it's very spacious on the inside. I finished early and was able to make it to the airport to switch for the earlier flight. However, Today we had flight delays due to the weather from Honolulu. The airport communicated and provided updates every 10 minutes. Very professional staff here at Hilo I.A. The waiting area is clean and has many seats. Two areas of opportunity... Is having power outlets accessible to guests. I got some work done but only because I had my own battery pack. There's only one line for TSA so if you have TSA pre check, you're blended in with the regular line. The regular line was crazy long. Luckily the flights were delayed. I appreciate the hospitable service while waiting for the delayed flight. read more

Hilo International Airport (ITO) was my number two most frequently used airport when I lived full-time in Honolulu from August 2012 to June 2015 (only behind Honolulu International Airport). I flew through Hilo both for work (geology) and school (geology and geophysics). As we were typically working on on volcanoes, the airport was not too far from where we would be spending the night(s). The airport was easy to navigate and find one's way in and out of. The interior ambience fit the feel of the island. Security was straightforward, even with our field work equipment/items. One standout memory was one of my co-workers requesting a pat-down so they would not have to go through the body scan, claiming concerns about radiation. Later, when she was my roommate, I pointed out to her that using a microwave for her food in our room contradicted her claim for radiation concerns here at Hilo International Airport. She promptly unplugged the microwave, however, she had been using it at the time she flew through here (plus another approximately 6 months)... Can learn a lot about people by traveling with them and then subsequently living with them. read more

There is something with Hilo that my heart melt every time I think about the place. I think I left my heart in Hilo. (insert happy face) anyhow... Hilo Airport is such a homie feeling I got. It has an easy entry and exit. It is like packed in small packages as they got the basic things you need in an airport. You won't get lost even if it's your first time here! Love the public artwork hanging on the wall. That huge honu before hopping on the escalator for departure. The Aloha feels!!!!!! If you've been to Līhu'e, you'll feel like Hilo is its smaller twin. Similar in layout and design, except Hilo's restaurant and bar is outside, there are no transpacific flights out of Hilo, and some of the holding areas are not enclosed. The rental facility is tiny, given there aren't much tourists in Hilo (hotels are few and old!). What I really love are the koa furniture sets in the downstairs lobby. They're really retro Hawaii, popular items from Sears in the 1960s. Hilo town changes as the airport changes, and I hope things stay this way. read more

Hilo International Airport is a small yet comfortable airport that has many comfortable lounge type of chairs and couches in the lower waiting area. There are many local treasures and historic material on display as well. My favorite displays are of the local turtle = honu [ho-noo]. The Hawaiian Airlines Staff is also friendly and efficient. The biggest downside is there is no Starbucks and the small news and snack bar have limited hours. There is a bar with grab & go type of items. If you are on an early flight, you might only have vending machines to meet your soda or snack needs. Aloha is definitely spoken here! read more

You're just steps away from the exit when you get off the plane... you only need 30 minutes to get through 'security'... such an easy laid back airport! A great, charming, very small airport serving the city of Hilo! A small-city feel airport that looks dated but is part of the charm. Friendliest employees ever, from car rental to TSA agents and gate agents to flight attendants. The car rental places don't require a bus, just walk right out of the terminal and across the arrivals/departures road. Serviced by only Hawaiian and Southwest flying inter island so very easy to check in and drop bags off. Security is tiny and quick: 1 precheck lane and one regular lane. Sometimes the body scanners will break down and you'll have to undergo a full body pat down instead, slowing the process a bit. Bring something to do inside of security, as there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Watch the TSA search people and their bags or be bored. The departure gates are up an escalator and is open air. They will make an announcement about your flight (pre boarding, group 1, etc.) downstairs since seating is a bit tight upstairs. A great airport to fly out of! read more

The airport has a small town feel with a rather large indoor common space lounge to relax and wait or you can go up to the gates which is covered but opened on one side to allow free air. The lounge has the restrooms and a nursing pod for nursing mothers as well as a place to eat. At the gates there are just rows of seats with no restrooms. Overall pretty easily to go in and out of the airport and its parking to the rest of the island. read more

Used this airport to land when we went to Hilo which is on the big island last weekend. It's fairly small and easy to get around. Getting on our flight was a little delayed but we still got to Oahu on time. We had to drop off our rental car at 8 am and our flight wasn't until like 11 am so we checked in and checked in our luggage and got to hang out before leaving. Plenty of chairs to sit on once you get through security. It was nice to just chill out. This location was great because the car rentals were close by and easy to find. There's also taxi cabs along the side where the airport parking was. Definitely a cool experience coming through here. read more

The airport was previously an international airport, but now usually only island hoping flights fly to Hilo. The airports layout is simple, making it easy to get to your gate. Average airport. Typically 1 line only for TSA because the machines are consistently not working. Plan ahead, bring a book or headphones because once you do get through security there's absolutely nothing to do. BUT, I do prefer it over the KONA airport in terms of cleanliness, ambiance, comfort and layout. read more

It's a small airport. Once you get through TSA you're pretty much in the lounge/waiting area. They have a snack bar, gift shop, and newsstand. It's air conditioned, so it's comfortable. There are a lot of cushioned seats. You wait for them to call your flight to board, then you head upstairs. You just board right there. It's easy to get to the rental car from this airport. I love flying into Hilo after the stress of waiting in long lines and going through security in Honolulu. Hilo International Airport (ITO) does not have a lot of crowds so it tends to be low stress and friendly in comparison to larger airports in Hawaii. Leaving the airport and getting to the rental car companies across the street is a breeze. It takes only a matter of minutes! For me, ITO reflects the small-town charm of Hilo that one would expect to find on his or her Hawaiian vacation. It isn't large, fancy, or modern, but if it were, it would no longer fit so seamlessly in with the Hilo 'āina. Although ITO is an old airport, it is steeped in Hawaiian and local Hilo culture. I couldn't help but buy a "Live Like a Volcano" t-shirt sold at the gift store. I have not seen these shirts anywhere else. The gift store sells a variety of other Hawaiian clothing, Big Island themed toys, local food, and even tropical plants and seeds that are hard to find outside of the Big Island. The newstand store also carries snacks made in Hilo including One-Ton Chips and Atebara's Potato Chips. The restrooms are clean, the worn lounge chairs are comfortable, and there is an ezH2O water bottle filling station. From the live Hawaiian music to the unique Made in Hilo souvenirs and snacks available at the gift store, waiting for a flight is comfortable and even enjoyable. I was fortunate to have a number of business trips to Hilo in the last year, and it is always comforting to arrive to ITO knowing that it's the start of a wonderful day for me on the Big Island. I now consider Hilo my second Hawaiian home outside of Honolulu. A hui hou! read more

Going back to the airport wasn't a possibility, but on a whim I called to check and see if they had found it. Not only have they found it. Hilo Airport is a small one with a long history. It was one of the first in the state due to being closest to the west coast of the mainland. It had its ups and downs in popularity over the years. Today, you can only fly to a handful of locations to/from here including Honolulu, Maui, and Los Angeles. The airport is right near town, making it an easy drive. Ride shares are available and less than $10 to anywhere you need to go. Taxis are considerably more. Landing here was a breeze, baggage claim is nearby where you come out, not much walking required. It's mostly an outdoor airport, which is welcoming. Leaving from here was just okay. Arriving at the airport is easy, there aren't many gates or check-in areas. It's not as modern with self-check-in on Hawaiian Airlines, you'll have to interact with people to get your bags weighed and tagged. Security is a real drag here; TSA Pre-Check was closed so they used the card system. Regardless, the agents took the general line more frequently and all gates used a single x-ray machine, making everything take a long time. At least with the card, the shoe requirements were waved. Inside they have a nice large air conditioned waiting room with big comfy chairs and couches. Amenities include gift shops, bars, and restaurants. There are also a few historical exhibits to look at. Restrooms are large and clean but old and in need of a refresh. The gates are upstairs, which is also air conditioned with seating. Boarding is fast here, as was taxiing and takeoff. read more

You have poor and horrible customer service. I don't need to be approached to tell one your employees my destination and assume I am going to "Mainland" and then feels stupid when I advised my destination. Your TSA was approached nicely this morning to please not press on my bag and by the second time attitude Nani came out of one of your employees. Then you have a second employee asking me what's in my damn pockets? That was my hands because you have 0 degree cold air in your damn airport blowing. Your third employee gave me Rude Nani Attitude when she had to pat my chest down because your computer assumed that I had something in my chest but end result shown nothing. You have a rude male approach me before boarding my airplane and I had to answer him when he is approaching me excuse me? Where in your company policy does it say that I as your Customer have to remove my ear buds and not play music while traveling as a customer in your airport? If that is in writing I will follow,but apparently you can't enforce stupid rules nor have your employee enforce regulations to have your customers follow. Yeah this affects me because now you BULLY ME and make me feel like I have endure walking on eggshells in your damn airport. Get Your Service Better and DO Better. It's not hard to SERVE WITH DIGNITY if that is difficult for you to teach that to your employees then you should question your role as a Business. I needed help to rebook my flight with Southwest or book a flight with another airlines. You have an Hawaiian Airlines representative that is checking in customers scanning bar codes and I was told "I am Busy Working and Discuss Gour Concern With Southwest." I explained that there are 2 empty work stations and how can I book my flight with them when no one is there. I then asked could you page them by any chance please? I am from California and all I know is California. You are dealing with a New Resident still making her rounds on the island and you sure know how to make someone feel so uncomfortable in their own skin. I than you ITO AIRPORT for making me more depressed for returning to your crappy airport and you are known to have horrible service. Dont Assume Everyone is from your Home because not everyone had the luxury of being born and raised in Hawaii like you. You live in Hawaii why do you not have Aloha?
