Dr. Alan Helig is a rare gem and the best dentist I've ever had. He specializes in gentle dentistry and do not believe in doing anything more than what is truly necessary for your dental health. He is extremely talented, knowledgeable and skilled. If you have issues with teeth grinding or TMJ, please go see Dr. Helig. He is an expert in this area and has saved my teeth. He understands the differences in how people grind and has the talent to create the right guard for you to help offset the damage and pressure from grinding. Dr. Helig is incredibly trustworthy and fair. Plus, he's the only dentist I would trust to do anything to my teeth. His work is excellent and lasts a long time. Dr. Helig has never steered me wrong. Dr. Helig is truly a wonderful, helpful dentist. I had to return for 3 visits to fix a problem that was basically my personal preference (at 77 years old) I'm used to certain perks. So let me let you know! I'm an adult with no dental insurance who needed serious dental work. I went to two other practices and one gave me an 11,000 dollar treatment plan. I can't make this up you guys!! I don't know many people who can just fork up that amount of money so I figured I just wouldn't get it done, until I got to Dr. Helig. He took a good look at my teeth and gave me an honest assessment. Boy am I grateful because boy did he slash my treatment plan DRAMATICALLY. Turns out some dentist are in the business of ripping people off and suggesting work that isn't necessary. Dr. Helig took no shortcuts. He did the work at a reasonable rate. You can tell that he's passionate about dental health and helping people have their best smile ever. Dr. Helig is also sensitive during the process. I went to another dentist who nearly ripped my mouth out. Dr. Helig has years of experience and is constantly keeping his practice up to date. Dr. Helig has been my family dentist since 1987 when I went to him for an emergency root canal. Since then he's treated my entire family and anyone who needs a dentist and asks me for a recommendation. I really like Dr. Helig's philosophy - the best dentistry is no dentistry. He really does practice gentle dentistry and is a guy who's in the field to provide a service. His manner is fatherly - he comes by that honestly - his care of your teeth is prudent without costing you, his patient, lots of money and time in his office - and his team, from Bessie on up, is great. My favorite thing about this place is that it's conveniently located. My appointment started 40 minutes late...but I come from several years with an amazing dentist who was always terribly behind, so I wasn't fazed. The staff was friendly and the woman who cleaned my teeth was gentle and thorough. Dr. Helig was also nice and gentle--a chill guy with a vibe not entirely unlike The Dude (though not an exact match, either). His "philosophy" as he put it, is that no dentistry is good dentistry, meaning that he wants to do as little dental work as possible to keep your teeth in good shape (read: he's not going to try to sell you veneers or laser whitening). After a handful of unpleasant experiences with other dentists in the region, I know a good one is hard to find--I'll gladly see Dr. Helig again. read more

I am 70 years old and a patient of Dr. Alan Helig for 12 years. I am a USAF retired person and must have been to more than 30 dentist in my live. Dr. Helig is the best of all. I just had a filling to correct a filling that an Air Force dentist did. Dr. Helig was outstanding. Zero pain; no discomfort. He has the gentle touch. I have complete faith in him. Also, his staff are professional, efficient, and friendly. I have never been to an office where the whole staff is caring. I want to personally recommend Ms. Mimi Su who is the Dental Hygienist. I haven't had much work done with Dr. Helig yet, but I plan on becoming a routine patient. I had awful tooth pain one Saturday morning that had me in tears. It was blinding, causing migraines, and I knew something was really wrong. I called several offices in DC since I don't have a dentist here. After being turned down by one office and getting voicemails for others, I reached Dr. Helig's office where the receptionist was incredibly friendly. She could tell I was in extreme pain and told me to get there as soon as I could and they would somehow fit me in. Upon getting there, I waited maybe 45 min - 1 hour, which is to be expected considering I just barged right in there and others had made appointments. Dr. Helig was friendly and thoroughly checked the area that was causing pain by taking X-rays and examining my teeth. He concluded I needed a root canal, and that while he sometimes did the procedure, he recommended I see an endodontist in this situation. He prescribed me antibiotics and pain medication, referred me to an endodontist (he even tried calling them that Saturday to see if he could reach someone, to no avail), and gave me a pain management regimen to get me through until Monday when I could see the endodontist. After having the root canal the following Monday, Dr. Helig gave me a call to see how it went and ask how I felt. I really appreciated the follow-up and can tell he is a dentist that 1) cares about his patients and 2) does not want to do work to your teeth if it is unnecessary or if he thinks someone else can do it better. I really appreciate the honesty and plan on seeing him soon for a cleaning and check-up. read more

Dr. Helig and his staff are amazing! I am from out of town and had to have an emergency tooth extraction. Not only did they fit me in after hours, they also called to check on me after the procedure. Horrible experience at Dr. Helig's office and I do not recommend this practice! He is incredibly unprofessional and spent more time trying to sell me gadgets for my mouth than checking my teeth. I felt like I was at a car dealership, more so than at a doctor's office. The office manager also lied to me in writing (the office does a lot of correspondence via email) and stated my teeth cleaning would be covered 100% by my dental insurance, when in fact the office does not take my dental insurance at all and I was stuck with a huge bill. There are so many dentists in the DC area, please don't waste your time at this office, go to a doctor with competent staff and who actually cares about your dental health. read more

I was referred to Dr. Helig by a friend and made the initial appointment. I needed a ton of work and was very concerned about the money or rather my lack of it. Dr. helig started work right away and I have continued to go back for many many things since. His office took care of filing the insurance and even worked out a doable payment plan that was easy to keep up. I highly recommend Dr. Alan Helig as a dentist to take care of your needs. I have decided to do a review and my first as I noticed the comments of another patron. My experience with Dr. Helig has been nothing short of great. It was maybe two years ago when I was brushing my teeth and my gums started bleeding. I remembered my coworker telling me about Dr. Helig and I immediately reached out to him. I called his phone number and there was an emergency line for me to reach as this was about 6AM in the morning. When I called the emergency line, I believe it was his wife who answered and she assisted me immediately as she could hear the fear and worry in my voice. Dr. Helig received the phone and assured me everything would be alright and to see him first thing in the morning so he could assist me. This response of care and love was needed as I had not been to the dentist in at the very least 20 years as far as I could remember. I have been going to Dr. Helig ever since and could not imagine going anywhere else. Everyone I have interacted with has been incredibly professional and a pleasure to work with. You can only imagine the fear associated with going to the dentist, but those fears are immediately wiped away. Just went for a cleaning and exam today... had a pretty spectacular visit! Everyone in the office was extremely friendly, efficient, and non-judgmental (quite awhile since my last visit AND I haven't flossed in even longer...). Was in and out with helpful advice, clean chompers, and even some compliments on my mouth. Dr. Helig was to the point and knowledgeable, and got me in and out quickly without feeling rushed. He even told me that I probably don't need to go every six months and let me schedule my next appointment for a full year away. I started going to Dr. Helig in a emergency situation and really was lucky to find him as a dentist. It was after hours, my dental appliance broke, and I was new to DC. After calling around frantically I found his office was still open and he had me come right over and fixed it immediately, and later at another appointment, rebuilt the appliance correctly from scratch (my old dentist did it wrong) and I haven't had a problem since. read more

It was a great experience and we would highly recommend him. The office is somewhat small, but it is very clean and the staff is very friendly and personable. Also, I like how they play the radio.
