I have never sat in a dentists office- or any medical office, for that matter- and thought to myself "I need to write a review of this place". From the moment I checked in to my first appointment I was greeted with the utmost of professionalism from every staff member. To my surprise, Dr. Ross himself came out to greet me. I'm used to doctors and dentists seeing me for 5-6 minutes halfway through my appointment, throwing medical jargon at me, and telling me they'll see me in a few months. This was the opposite experience. Dr. Ross sat me down and asked comprehensive questions about my dental experience, if I had any points I wanted to touch on, and his philosophy of care. His friendly demeanor and humor put me at ease during what has been such a stressful experience in the past. I commented about the financial burden I'm experiencing and he made it a point at each interaction to ensure I would get a proper quote before moving further. The x ray technician and hygienist were kind, thorough, and made the cleaning as painless as possible. When it came time for recommendations that put my past what insurance would cover, Dr. Ross came back to see me multiple times as I weighed my decisions. I have never had a dentist office treat me with such compassion and care, and I will absolutely be telling my friends and coworkers about this experience. read more

You know that your dentist is good when you actually look forward to your appointment! I love seeing Dr. Ross and my dental hygienist Melissa Good. During every appointment, I feel very comfortable and cared for. They remember little details that you tell them about your life and are very easy-going and friendly to talk to. I also get a goody-bag each time I come with a travel-sized toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, and mouthwash) which is so nice! One of the other things I love is how they file everything FOR YOU with your insurance company. It is so easy. First, my disclaimer: I'm Dr. Ross's web designer, so he is a paying client of mine. I've been a patient of Dr. Ross's since 2000, he and his dental technicians provide my twice-yearly teeth cleanings. I really like everybody at Dr. Ross's office, it's extremely professional but also extremely friendly. They do not overbook and their waiting room has only 4 seats, so you get treated quickly. I really like having Dr. Ross as my regular dentist, but he also performs cosmetic dentistry procedures like veneers, in-office Whitening, invisalign teeth straightening, and ceramic "fililngs". Because of the high-tech procedures he uses, the color-matching on veneers, whitening and ceramic restorations is great, and most of the procedures are one-visit-only, so you are done quickly. It's very convenient, safe and fast! read more

I just returned from City Smiles and I can't express how happy (and relieved) I am with Dr. Ross and his wonderful team. I'm another one of those terrified about going to the dentist and neglected my teeth for far too long. When I had a major problem last Friday night, my husband (who has been a long-time patient) called Dr. Ross, who fit us in when he didn't have office hours on Saturday. He took his time to explain everything to me and did not make me feel neglectful or embarrassed. His bedside manner is the best I've seen with any doctor. Today, he and Deneen and Ashley took excellent care of me and I know I'll be a regular patient going forward. I can't recommend them highly enough. Generally, there's two types of dentists in this world A) those that want to help and care for their patients and B) those that want to suck cash out of your pockets until they are bone dry. Without a doubt, "Dr." Stuart Ross falls into camp B. I recently went to get an opinion on my teeth and the proposed bill for just 2 cavities including sedation was nearly $6,000. $900 of that $6,000 was for a pill that causes sedation so you can relax during the procedure. This is a pill called Halcion that costs cents on the open market. Yes, that's less than a dollar you read that correctly. When I attempted to ask questions about the breakdown of the $6000, I was rudely dismissed and told to "go see another dentist then if you don't like the prices". The veneer that I did with my previous dentist broke just after 1 month. Worse timing because I was leaving for the holidays. So I went to see Dr. Ross, the experience was so pleasant. the Dr. and Tina were so helpful and friendly. The veneer was made perfectly in less than 2 hours (I get to watch the whole process, so cool!!) and I am happy with how it turned out! read more

City Smiles DC really is as good as it gets! I went there to get help after two botched cavity fillings from another dentist. Dr. Ross not only knew exactly what to do, but he did it quickly and efficiently, and took time to thoroughly explain all of my options, giving recommendations without being pushy. He and Tina, one of the dental assistants, have been doing this for a long time, and it was evident. He ended up redoing one of my fillings completely and I felt better immediately. He even called later that evening to check in and see how I was feeling. Other bonuses: -- extremely friendly and professional staff -- M&Ms everywhere (I realize the irony and I'm okay with it) :) -- thorough explanations and honest assessments (it didn't feel like he was trying to sell me anything or do unnecessary work) -- slow drip novocaine to make its administration more comfortable for patients and lots of other fancy, new equipment It felt like a posh Hollywood dentist office! I don't think you'll find another dentist in this city that will actually send you a handwritten note after your appointment welcoming you and thanking you for using their practice. After a lousy experience at my last dentist, I was referred to Dr. Ross and his team (my hygienist Melissa was top notch) and I doubt I could find a better place to get my pearly whites examined. I stopped going to this practice because they messed up my billing terribly. They filed with the wrong insurance company (one that I have never used), and despite my continued follow-up, never re-filed with the correct one. I was referred to Dr. Ross by my old dentist in my hometown. I needed some fillings and had a chip in my tooth that needed repair. I had those procedures done in February. From the minute I sat down he started upselling me on this and that, but given the fact that I don't have dental insurance, I disregarded the typical dentist doomsday talk and chose to get the sensible options (aka 1.3k vs. over 10k, so not 'cheap' by any stretch of the imagination). The chip was repaired and looked fine, however I noticed a rough coating on my teeth that was visible on close inspection. 3 months later, the chip reappeared. I made an appointment to get it fixed. When he entered the room, he started 'so the chip on #8 reappeared...what do you want to do?" Get it fixed, of course! He then explained to me that the way my teeth are shaped, if they fix it, the filling would fall off again in a few months, and that I would need to have my bottom tooth shaved too in order for it to stay. That would have been nice to know the first time around! I told him that I wanted to think about it. At that point, his tone changed and he raised his voice, telling me that I need to 'invest in my teeth etc etc. but that he'd 'give me my money back' if I didn't like what he had to say. His diagnosis may very well be correct, but I don't think its unreasonable for me to consider my options or perhaps get a second opinion rather than spend another thousand dollars on a lark. My impression from his tone, even from day one, was that he is not used to clients even considering costs (he is right off K St, granted), and it annoyed him to deal with someone even remotely skeptical. Even if he did tell me the first time around that the filling wouldn't stick, which he claimed, and I really do need all the procedures he described, the tantrum he threw was completely unprofessional (especially given that I'd already spent a considerable amount of money at his office). Never in my life has a doctor or dentist yelled at me and stormed out of the room. I won't pretend that I have a sunny disposition in the dentist chair, but I honestly believe I did nothing to warrant such a hissy fit (and you would think that a dentist would have some experience with nervous and anxious patients.) I'm new to the area, having just moved up to D.C. from Charlottesville, VA. I have to say that I've had pretty good luck with dentists in my life, so this review really is a reflection about the absolute quality of Dr. Ross's practice (and, in particular, Dr. Crocker who was my treating dentist and who I understand has recently started working with Dr. Ross). Here's what happened: I bit into a redskin potato at lunch. Much to my chagrin, the potato was apparently comprised partly of a pebble, which I felt crunch into one of my back left teeth. I spit out the pebble, cringed, and didn't think much of it. A couple hours later, though, when chewing on a crunchy snack, I heard another odd noise. I then felt the back of my tooth with my tongue and a sizable chunk of it was missing. UGH! Having no dentist in the area yet, I scrambled to try and find someone who would take me quickly. Luckily, a co-worker of mine is married to a dentist (the aforementioned Dr. Crocker), and she recommended I give him a call. (So, to repeat for full disclosure purposes, I do in fact know Dr. Crocker tangentially through a co-worker, but had never had any dental care from him prior to this past week). The tooth was damaged at about 4:00pm on a Thursday, about an hour before most dental offices close. I was able to get through to Dr. Crocker in short order and after I told him what happened, not only did he tell me that he could set up an emergency appointment--he told me that I could come in IMMEDIATELY. I showed up and was immediately impressed with the friendliness of the staff and the high quality of the facility. The office basically looks like it is brand new: clean, brightly lit, and exactly the kind of place you'd like to go to if you have a dental emergency. Dr. Crocker looked at my tooth pretty much right away and quickly diagnosed my options. I've heard stories before of dentists who will try and get patients to do more work than is absolutely necessary, but the opposite was true here: Dr Crocker provided me with all of the information I could have hoped for about what had happened (one of my cusps fractured; he showed me pictures and xrays and explained exactly where and what the problem was) and all of the information about treatment options (ranging from a resin patch that would last up to five years, but that would be hard to count on, up to a ceramic restoration that would be much, much more reliable). I never once got the sense that he was trying to sell anything to me - he just provided the objective information and let me make my own choice. I should also add a couple other points. The first is that Dr. Crocker ended up staying until almost 7pm, by himself, to patch my tooth (I decided to get the full ceramic restoration too, just to be safe, which I will do next week - but the short-term patch made sense in the interim both for comfort purposes and to make sure there aren't any more serious problems that weren't immediately manifesting). I found this to be extraordinary. Maybe it helps that I work with his spouse, but I got the sense that Dr. Crocker would be this accomodating for any and all of his patients. The second thing is that I am pretty queamish about pain, I'm not ashamed to admit. When I had my wisdom teeth out several years ago, I had a horrible experience being jabbed by the anasthetic needle, which was itself excruciating (even after having a topical anasthetic applied first). So I was very wary of the anathesia prior to this patch. But Dr. Crocker & Dr. Ross have an incredible device that I've never seen before that uses an automatic needle that is much smaller and sharper and that injects in a much more measured way that, quite frankly, I didn't feel it. So, it may not be a huge reason to go there for most people, but for me the idea of a close-to-pain-free dental experience is a huge plus. So, needless to say, I will be recommending to all of my friends and colleagues that if they are in the market for a new dentist, to go see Dr. Ross & Dr. Crocker. I'll add particularly that because I understand Dr. Ross is one of the more established dentists in the city, he may be harder to get in with. In that event, I highly encourage you to set up an appointment with Dr. Crocker. I don't know if there is some organization that keeps track of these things, but it wouldn't surprise me if he is one of the better up and coming young dentists in the area. read more

Dr. Ross and his team are the best. First-rate care, with seemingly the latest technology. Always explains what he's doing and why. Entire staff is caring and efficient. Not the cheapest dentist around but the staff will file for you ( and do battle with your insurer if need be). It doesn't get any better than this: last weekend, my tooth cracked on half. I called Dr Ross's office, got the after-hours number, dialed and assumed it would be answered by a backup service. instead. It was Dr. Ross and his first words after I told him what had happened were, "How soon can you get to the office?" Half an hour later, he met me at the office, shot my gums with painkiller and did a temporary patch. On Monday, he cleared two hours to do a permanent fix. No pain. I just hope he never retires! read more

Stuart Ross is a tremendous dentist. I had several other mediocre dentists in the DC area before I found him. He is extremely smart and personable, stays abreast of the latest technologies and is incredibly thorough. Whatever work he does will be done right - and it will last. His staff is topnotch, too. Five stars. The one caveat is that Dr. Ross is expensive, especially if he does not take your insurance. His service is worth the price, but only customers can decide if they can afford to pay the premium. read more

Team of amazing people! I have been going to City Smiles for almost 3 years and I have never had such great dental care. I have several problems (some result of past dentist not fully evaluating the situation) that Dr Ross and team are now fixing. The equipment they have is unbelievable and the way they work with you is so personable you feel like you are cared for and part of a family. I have had several things done (fixing broken teeth, extractions, root canals and now implants) and all of the work they have performed has been top notch (no problems!). You do have to pay up front but they work with your insurance on filing and I have never had any problems. I went to see them this week and wasn't sure what to expect with covid but they did an amazing job. They had special suites and double masks along with setting up their lobby differently. I felt completely safe! I can't imagine ever seeing another dentist...they are simply the best! read more

Probably one of the most awful experiences with a dentist i have ever had. The staff as well as the doctor were completely rude. They insisted I needed services aside from my biannual cleanings that I did not in fact need. They then erroneously claimed that these services were covered by my insurance when in actually, they were not covered. So I ended up paying a lot of money out of pocket for xrays that I did not need. When I called to express my frustration, the office manager, hygenist, and dentist himself refused to hear me out, refused to waive fees (which I never asked for), and refused to accept responsibility for taking advantage of a young working professional struggling in this economy to make ends meet. But what does Dr Ross care? His poor business practices have probably earned him oodles of money! read more

Dr. Ross had been my dentist for at least 20 years. He's great. His staff are very professional and effective. Always on time. I've had two implants done this past year. Easy and painless. I don't know why I ever put it off. His staff help with insurance claims. Dr. Ross is patient and will work with patients like me who are reluctant to get things done, without being pushy. He has all the latest equipment which likely makes his services slightly higher priced than others, but the excellent service and high quality work is well worth the cost. I've been a regular patient of the practice for a few years and dental care doesn't get any better. First thing to note is the location. It's right in the heart of DC's business district, easily accessible by the red, orange, and blue lines, as well as numerous bus lines. When you walk in, you can't help but feel welcomed by the staff. While I haven't needed any major dental work, my hygienist Ashley has made each of my cleaning experiences terrific. She is extremely personable, yet professional and is both thorough and gentle with her cleanings, which is a great thing for someone who maybe doesn't floss as often as he should. I leave each appointment feeling as fresh as a daisy. In addition to dental care, you can tell that the practice really cares about its patients. Dr. Ross generously throws a fully-catered, fully-stocked bar Christmas party each year as a thank you to his patients. It's care like that which will keep you coming back to the practice. read more

Dr. Ross and his team have cared for my teeth since the late 1970s. After moving from the DC area in 2002, I have flown back to have Dr. Ross take care of "problems" too complex for my Ohio dentist to handle. My confidence in his work has been confirmed many times by dentists I have seen in Ohio who have always remarked at how good my teeth look. Dr. Ross is not only a Dentist, he is an artist. His Cerec restorations are indeed works of art! I can recommend him without reservation.
