And the winner for best Dentist in the DMV goes to Dr. Brian C. Davis!!! Like most people, I hate going to the dentist, but there's nothing will get you to the dentist's office sooner than an abscessed tooth!! I was in pain before I arrived, which is why I am tremendously grateful that I was greeted by friendly and professional staff at the front desk. Dr. Davis has a warm and caring bed side manned, and I knew soon after meeting him that I was in good hands. He retreated my root canal, which required two separate visits. Incredibly, I felt absolutely NO PAIN during either procedure. I was in excruciating pain and I looked like the Elephant Mam when I first met Dr. Davis 4 weeks ago. The swelling has completely subsided and the pain is a thing of the past. To boot, Dr. David referred me to my new favorite restaurant-"The Big Greek Cafe" on Georgia Avenue. I told Dr. Davis I was hard to numb, I've always needed 6-8 shots to get fully numb, and dentists have been telling me this since I was child. he scoffed at me and started the procedure, about 3-4 times it hurt badly and I raised my hand and he kept going and saying hold on even thought I was in agony and the dental assistant told him to stop twice, at one point he got very visible upset and threatened to cancel the root canal mid-procedure after starting it. I felt very uncomfortable and unsafe during the procedure and I was wondering if he was going to drill out my tooth then leave me hanging because of his temper. While I don't expect him to kiss my behind the entire procedure, I do expect him to listen when I'm in pain and at the very least NOT show such obvious annoyance and disdain after I just paid him $750+. So 0/10 won't be going to him or recommending him to anyone. I'd say avoid unless you like having your money taken and being made to feel uncomfortable and mildly tortured. Office staff was very friendly, felt like they were being overly nice cuz they knew how rude their boss was. read more

My general dentist referred me to Dr. Davis for a cracked tooth in June 2020. I made an appointment and arrived at the office at the scheduled time. I was charged a $25 fee for personal protective equipment (PPE), which was disappointing since I hadn't incurred this fee at other medical or dental offices. Additionally, the fee had not been disclosed to me prior to my appointment. As I sized up the office, I noticed Washingtonian Top Doctor plaques for two of the other doctors in the practice and none for Dr. Davis. An assistant escorted me to an examination room after about ten minutes and she took an x-ray of my cracked tooth. Dr. Davis entered the room a short while later and glanced at the x-ray. He told me the tooth had vertical and horizontal fractures and that I needed a root canal. I was befuddled by this since none of the things he mentioned were visible to me on the x-ray. He immediately started prepping for the root canal by putting on a pair of blue disposable gloves (presumably the PPE I had just paid $25 for). I was not convinced that I needed this procedure, so I started asking him questions about why a root canal was needed, what was involved in the procedure, how much pain would be involved etc. He trivialized the procedure, making it seem like it was a routine thing, while I became increasingly nervous and uncomfortable. At one point, he asked me if I was a "scaredy cat" and I admitted that I was very uncomfortable and I got up to leave. As I exited the room, Dr. Davis removed his gloves and threw them in the garbage in frustration. Clearly he was banking on me undergoing an unnecessary and costly procedure. I left the practice very unhappy with the experience and distrustful of this practice and Dr. Davis. read more

I had my first (and hopefully last!) root canal with Dr. Davis, and can honestly say it was nowhere near as terrible as I had thought it would be. In fact, it was no more exhausting than a regular filling. Dr. Davis answered all my questions and was quick but thorough. I recently had a root canal with Dr. Davis and it was a much more pleasant experience than I had anticipated. I was nervous about this procedure because I had so much pain. The office fit me in quickly for enough time to assess and perform the procedure. After deeming it necessary we started but I had too much inflammation to proceed. Dr. Davis explained why we had to postpone, prescribed meds to deal with the inflammation and was super informative and thorough through the whole thing when it was scheduled a week later. After months of LOTS of pain and sensitivity, I'm pain free. He was awesome! read more

I had a root canal done here about a year ago. I had been referred to Dr Davis' partner who supposedly accepted my insurance but it turns out only Dr Davis did. (My regular dentist said this always seemed to happen w this office). I have other jaw issues that make it so I can't open my mouth wide at all. The entire procedure, he complained to me that I was making his job harder and was incredibly rude with his comments. (When I returned to my regular dentist for the crown, I was asked generally how Dr Davis was because my regular dentist had also not heard great things). When the procedure was done, the assistant couldn't manage to get the X-ray right, resulting in about ten unnecessary shots taken of my head. I did feel that he was very thorough and have had no issues with the work he did, but would never recommend based on the way he treated me. read more

Had my first root canal today today. Not exactly the most fun experience, however, Dr. Davis makes it as pleasant as possible with his humor and calm demeanor. He's a down-to-earth person, which is refreshing. Also, my regular dentist isn't available for a while to do my crown afterwards (thanks to COVID-19) so Dr. Davis quickly came up with a permanent filling solution until my dentist reopens - I appreciated his flexibility on the spot. There was absolutely no pain and the procedure was quicker than expected. His staff is polite, responsive, knows their stuff, and got me in immediately for an appointment. I've visited Dr Davis for 2 separate root canals. The office staff is friendly and pleasant. I am always seen on time for my appointments. Dr Davis himself is very personable and profession. He does a great job with explaining what's going on. And he is very respectful of your time. Both procedures went great with no errors. I felt no pain as a root canal can seem scary going into. I have awful teeth due to years of grinding (pro tip: if your dentist tells you when you are 26 that you need a mouth guard, listen to them! Your 40 year old self will thank you). Usually by the time I see Dr. Davis, I'm in fairly severe pain due to cracked teeth gone bad. Dr. Davis is a great blend of professional and gentle, a fine thing in a dentist. He's also really good at listening, and has dealt kindly with me when I've been in pain and teary-eyed. First, I didn't feel any pain at all -- I actually almost fell asleep. Dr. Davis did two root canals for me. Originally, I went for a root canal for #14 after I got a crown on this tooth. Dr. Davis did a very good job on #14. While he was doing his assessment on #14, he discovered an infection on my #15 where I got a root canal approximately 10 years ago. Unfortunately, the dentist who did #15 10 years ago only cleaned and filled two canals and totally missed the third canal which caused a chronic infection. So I was at the verge of losing a tooth without even knowing about it. Dr. Davis also successfully and appropriately re-did the root canal on #15 Thank you Dr. Davis. read more

I had a root canal before with Dr. Fonseca but she was very busy with her schedule. However, I was able to get in quicker with Dr. Davis and at first was hesitant. In the future, I will see Dr. Davis. He explained all of the steps to me, very calm demeanor, great sense of humor and basically told me I could not wait to get a temporary crown. The office contacted my dentist and I was seen right away after the procedure. It did not take longer than an hour. Dr. Fonsesca is excellent as well but I would definitely recommend Dr. Davis. Spread the word. My mouth is extremely sore and hurts to bite down but he did the task he was hired to perform. I will follow-up in six months with him. read more

In June of 2013 I had Brian Davis perform a root canal, which was singularly the most painful oral procedure I have ever encountered. Since then, the tooth has never really felt right and has had two subsequent infections. This weekend, pain started again and I saw another dentist. He was able to take x-rays and show me exactly why the tooth continued to have problems and it had everything to do with the original root canal and what amounts to questionable dentistry. This afternoon I get to go back and have the entire procedure redone, basically now I get to pay again with pain, inconvenience and of course, another $1,000 I am sure. Nice fellow, no question. I was very fortunate to have Dr. Davis recently perform my root canal. I am normally very nervous about going to dentists and getting needles. He took the time to talk to me and calm me down. Excellent! I had a 12 year old root canal that got infected, last week, I was in a lot of pain. I was referred to another dentist at this practice, but she was out on vacation, so I got Dr. Davis. I am so GLAD that I did. From the first vist, and he fit me in an already busy day, for a consult! He told me the problem, looked at xrays, and what my treatment options were. That was the first visit. The second one, he tried for a redo of the root canal, and to save the crown. He called in the bone specialist at the practice to also evaluate me. They both concurred that the old root canal was a goner at this point! Then, Dr. Davis suggested that I have the whole tooth removed, and he personally called an oral surgeon recommendation who was right across the street to see if he could take me right away. He said they needed to get that tooth out, the sooner, the better for me. The surgeon was able to fit me in. Dr. Davis wrote some follow up stuff for the surgeon, and I was on my way to the surgeon's office. Dr. Davis really went above and beyond to get me into a surgeon the same day. I'm grateful! If you are possibly thinking about getting a root canal, run far, far away from Dr. Davis. Perhaps out of state. The setup: I'm having pain in my back top molar, my regular dentist refers me to an endodontist, and I find Dr. Davis's name on a list from my insurance company. So far, so good. But during the consult he springs so many awful things on me: all my wisdom teeth need to come out (one of them is pressing against the root of the molar, thus the pain), then, if I'm lucky, I can have a root canal (if I'm not lucky: extraction), oh, and did I know that I grind my teeth? Something will clearly need to be done about that, too. (My regular dentist said this last diagnosis was bullshit, so who knows what he was trying to do there.) And all of this was said to me with the patience and compassion of an automaton who could not understand why hearing all of this at once might possibly be upsetting. Ok, fine, I got the wisdom teeth out, and I'm lucky, so I get a root canal. I show up for the appointment, wait an interminably long time in the waiting room, finally get shown to the back and have the Novocaine administered. And then I wait. And wait. And wait. I'm waiting so long that I'm freaked out the Novocaine is going to wear off. I'm waiting so long that I finally tell myself that he has five minutes to reappear before I grab my stuff and leave. (And let me tell you, I'm normally a very patient person, loathe to make a scene.) But he does appear, being gruff and monosyllabic as normal (it turned out they had double-booked appointments, so I guess we all had to pay the price for that), and thus commences what was probably some of the most unpleasant hours of my life. My jaw was stretched open so uncomfortably, for so long, that at one point, my eyes started tearing up. Dr. Davis said this was because the tooth was so far in the back and hard to get to. And then he proceeded to try to stretch my mouth open wider. (Let me tell you, having now done another root canal -- don't ask -- on the back top molar on the other side, this claim is a complete fabrication. The other endodontist was able to give me a plastic grip to bite down on, allowing my jaw to completely relax and making the experience totally different from what I got from Dr. Davis.) After the root canal with Dr. Davis, my jaw was really sore for at least four or five days. But at least I'm done now, right? Unfortunately, no. I had to go back for the follow-up appointment, which was scheduled for 8 in the morning. (I'm a busy person with a job -- I just want to get in and then be on my way so I can get to work.) Well, yet again, I'm in the waiting room for a while, so long that I finally ask if he's running late with other patients, which might possibly explain why they haven't called me back yet. No, the reply is that he doesn't normally get to the office until around 8:15 (which has already gone by). Why, then, you might ask, do they schedule appointments for times when he's not actually in the building? Because, of course, I came to see, my time is not actually that important. (And, of course, during this appointment, after he finally shows up, he continues to press the claim that I grind my teeth. Sigh.) Thank God I will never have to go back. read more

I recently had 2 root canals with Dr. Davis. He is hands down the best endodontist I've been to, and unfortunately I've seen quite a few. Both teeth had 4 canals, lucky me. My teeth are notoriously hard to anesthetize. Both procedures were completely painless - I actually fell asleep during the first one. Dr Davis is great, very personable, and explains things well. I was referred to Dr. Davis for a root canal. I wasn't looking forward to my visit because I've had one in the past, and they're not exactly painful, just annoying because you're sitting there for a while. This tooth in particular came with an infection, so it was a two-part process. The good news is that Dr. Davis was very professional in every way, and explained the process thoroughly. This particular experience was only uncomfortable because I had an infection, for which he prescribed a strong antibiotic that cleared it up in less than a week, so we were able to complete the process by the second visit. He didn't shy away from providing pain medication and was very alert when I reported any discomfort. I hope to not need a root canal ever again, but if I do I'd definitely recommend him. read more

My experience with Dr. Davis and his office was not good. A root canal is already an unpleasant experience, but he and his staff made it even worse. I can't speak to his technical ability as a doctor--after the root canal, my tooth is still sensitive--but apparently, that can be normal. But I can say that his bedside manner, compassion, courtesy, and timeliness leave a lot to be desired. I went to Dr. Davis after I had 3 days of unbearable pain in the right side of my face. The pain was not specific to any particular tooth, so when he told me I needed a root canal, I asked why I wasn't feeling the pain in that tooth, what a root canal was, what the risks were, etc. Despite asking these questions several times, he just demanded I needed a root canal and handed me a pamphlet. I certainly didn't get the impression he was listening to my symptoms or concerned for my health or comfort. The root canal ended up taking 2 appointments--one month apart! That meant for 1 month I was in pain and eating nothing but soft foods. During the first appointment I was in so much pain during the procedure I was flinching and actually started to cry. I'm not saying the pain was his fault, but he just complained about me flinching and didn't stop. Finally when the pain became unbearable he stopped and said we'd have to finish another time. Well they then cancelled the next appointment, 1 hour ahead of time, with no explanation and no apology and couldn't give me another appointment until a full month had passed since they had started. Overall, his office staff was unpleasant and acted like I was inconveniencing them, it took far too long to get an appointment, and I had the impression I was on a root canal assembly line--no patient is unique or deserves individualized treatment, compassion, or deserves to understand their treatment. read more
