I don't stop in here nearly as often as I should but when I do I'm always reminded of how much I enjoy this little shop. There are just some days when I don't feel like making my own smoked salmon dip and those are the days I stop into this cute little place, that being said I really dig their smoked salmon dip. They also have an excellent selection of "tinned fish" if that's your thing (it's totally mine). All kinds of neat sauces and seasonings as well as a cold case where they carry a variety of their own cured meats. I also swing in here when I'm looking for a gift for someone that I don't know what to get, I'll find some cool candy or such. In our travels around the country, I really around the world, favorite stop has become meat shops! We feel like it gives us a little flavor for the sorts of meats that they like in specific areas, and has introduced us to plenty of other delicacies. This spot specializes in smoked salmon, and they do it well! They had samples available of six or seven different types of smoked salmon, including a cold smoked variety. That was absolutely brilliant. They also had belly strips that were chopped into small pieces. We ate through almost an entire bag that evening, and got a second one which only lasted a day or two. The different varieties of smoked salmon they had were all excellent. We appreciated that they had silver, copper river, and King varieties. On the back wall, he had a number of different types of jerky, including reindeer. We got some to go, and it was quite lovely. We got to talking with one of the bosses here, and he was one of the nicest dudes we met on our trip. Super chill, hooked us up with some great fish, and had some of the only tattoos I've ever seen, that I would actually consider getting. They were diagrams of the cut of meat for both a cow and a pig. Absolutely spectacular stuff! They also hooked me up with a shirt from a recent anniversary, they celebrated. I've started to collect shirts from all the meat shops we go to, and this one will be worn proudly! If you're in the area, you have to stop here! They've been around for a long time, they know what they're doing and the stuff they are serving up is as good as anything we've had anywhere. A+! read more

I liked how they let us sample the different types of smoked salmon so that we can pick out the ones we liked the best. Very friendly staff who took the time to explain everything. Not impressed. I bought a filet of coho, small filet of king, medium filet of halibut and a 1 lb package of smoked salmon strips. I bought it, the man boxed it up and by the time I got it home (I opened it 18 hours later) the coho was thawed and leaking. This means the packaging is poor. I would not trust them to process and package anything I caught or bagged. We ate the coho that night and it was OK for fish that had been frozen for almost a year. Better off just buying it at Costco for half the price. The smoked salmon strip were pretty poor. I've had salmon jerky, squaw candy - whatever you want to call - and this was the worst I've had. Way too tough, not smoked enough. Their quality doesn't justify their prices. Most of their items are pre-packaged. The reindeer sausage is just a gimmick. I looked at one package and the ingredients listed reindeer sausage was below salt. Basically there isn't any real caribou in their product. What a lie. Don't fall for it. read more

Another case of the disappearing review... oh well! I'm lucky enough to live conveniently within walking distance of Ak Seafood and Sausage. This business has 2 arms 1. meat and salmon processing (take in your catch and they will process it for you, smoke it , turn it into sausage, etc) 2. A storefront that sells German specialty foods, and Preprocessed Ak Salmon and Sausages. Around the holidays they will also add other items like smoked turkeys and german potato sausages (delicious!). I'll be honest I'm not crazy about their meat processing Arm. Its pricey and I just didnt feel like it was all that good. The salmon strips were sliced way to thick and the cold smoking technique they used resulted in a wet squishy fish that I just didn't care for. We ended up giving away a lot of it. The Lox ok, but I was really wishing I had gone somewhere and had it canned, because again, we ended up giving away hundreds if dollars of fish. The retail store is great. They have lots of pre prepared sausages (and Salmon) available for grab and go. Their seasonal stuff is spectacular. Their reindeer sausage is very popular in my house. I like that they have various German products, krauts and pickles. But around the holidays - imported gingerbread (Liebkuchen), Kriststollen, cookies, jelliies, honies and teas. Hands down my favorite is the marzipan- there's varieties I've never seen before! I have to control myself from going back too soon or I'll go broke. read more

Are they pricey? Yes! Is it worth it? Absolutely! The best variety of Alaska meat and seafood products we've seen so far. The added bonus of European/mainly German products also for sale tickled us pink. We bought so many different marzipans, we were doing tastings along our road trip. They also offer local honey, fruit and birch syrups and some incredible imported cheeses. I must have eaten 1/2 lb worth of their kippered halibut samples but I don't feel bad because we also bought a lot of it. The store is easy to get to and plenty of parking is available on site, located along Arctic BLVD near Benson. The store itself is very clean and the store staff super friendly. I found all my favorite German products I like including some I had not found here before like the Knorr Aromat Garden Herbs as well as my all time favorite Christmas cookies, Zimtsterne. They are so delicious! I will have to go back for another package of them. The German Bratwurst I got is as authentic as it gets. Each time I came to anchorage my grandma would always take me here first. Great reindeer sausage it's so good. So I'd stock up and before I left to come home I'd go back and place a huge order to be shipped back home. Never had a problem the box was packed in dry ice never had no spoilage. They have this salmon jerkey omg it's the best I've ever tried. I at least order from here once a year for the taste I grew up on. They also sell king crab legs and other fresh seafood. This place deserves an updated review. We literally found this place using Google on our last day in Anchorage. I wanted some local items to bring back to my family in California - specifically reindeer sausage. We show up via Uber in the morning to power shop. From the moment we entered this store, we were greeted by the most friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming young man. I truly wish I remembered his name but it was 6/19/21 probably around 10am. I bought all kinds of goodies based on his recommendations and my family back home was thrilled! So this is where the service experience goes from great to amazing. We are done with our purchases and the Uber is going to take a ridiculous 25 mins to get to us. We were dying for some coffee and it was raining and my partner has a bad knee. We ask the same gentleman for the closest coffee shop and gives us a recommendation, but pauses and says, "I have some coffee you can have. Its KBC and I just brewed it fresh." We could not believe our ears! He gave us a cup (and would have done two) but we shared a cup of the most delicious coffee I have ever had. In fact bought some at the airport before we left. I hope this gentleman sees this review because I want him to know that he made our entire trip memorable and our walk-away impression of the store was above and beyond! Love, love, love this place! First of all the salmon is amazing-so many different flavors (and so many options to sample)! They clearly understand the sweet and salty struggle as they offer a diverse, unique set of sweets that pairs oh, so well with their seafood and sausage. The 1st time around, the salmon I brought them was smoked pretty well. However, the 2nd time around, not so much, the Sockeye salmon I had smoked, was tough & dried out. I assume they cranked up the smoker too high & processed it too fast. The tail tale sign - when the fat of the salmon comes to the top, putting a lot of white on the surface of the filet. This place has been great in the past but this year we got a call saying that the moose had a lot of bloodshot. The moose was shot in the head and there was no bloodshot. What was sent in was very clean. They took over 6 weeks to send the meat back and we didn't get what we ordered. Instead of Cajun sausage we received some kind of cheddar hot dogs. It's also questionable if this is really our own meat. I expected better service for $700. read more

When I got to Anchorage the other day I was pointed in the direction of M.A.'s Hot Dogs - the man on 4th st who sells Reindeer Sausages. They were amazing! After bragging to all of my friends that I ate Rudolph for dinner, some inquired about actually getting some of those same sausages as souvenirs. I did some online research and found Alaska Sausage & Seafood. This is the EXACT place that M.A. gets his food from! Perfect. Upon googling the location of the storefront from my hotel I realize that it's going to be a 5 mile round-trip walk. Did I do it? Hell yeah! Was it worth it? I hope so! The service at the counter was great. The woman that helped me was really, really polite and offered some great suggestions as well as some fresh samples of the food they make. When I mentioned to her that I was going to be taking this food on a plane she included an ice pack in my order to keep everything cool. I really couldn't have imagined a better experience. The storefront of course houses the sausages and smoked fish that they're known for, in addition to Russian foods, local candies and snacks, and a variety of treats that are popular in Alaska. If you're in Anchorage, I'd highly recommend this place as a stop on your souvenir shopping sprees. The downtown stores are full of crap that isn't even made in Alaska! (be sure to check the tags!) I found things that were made in Idaho and even China! Such a waste. Alaska Sausage is made right here in Anchorage, it's fresh, and it's tasty. It is practically a German grocery store and you can find an extensive assortment of authentic German food items - pickles, dumplings, teas, amazing chocolates and sweets, endless Knorr packed soups and dinner prep ideas. I grew up with my dad making THE BEST smoked salmon and prior to Alaska Sausage and Seafood, o haven't been able to find anything remotely comparable. Inferior smoked salmon can be fishy, dry or salty. AS&S's sockeye tenders, lox and smoked silver portions and fillets are so tasty! This is a premium product that justifies the price. If you were to melt 10th & M Seafoods and Alaska Wild Berry Products into one store, you'd end up with AK Sausage and Seafood. Looked like a very healthy selection of fresh and frozen halibut and sockeye, plus plenty of jars of smoked salmon and jerky for gifts. If you were a well-heeled person, you'd be sending gift baskets to your lower 48 friends through this place. They've got fireweed jelly, honey, European chocolates, AK-made mustard (moose-tard they call it), and of course, sausage. Pretty much anything in this store you could actually find at New Sagaya, so I was doing price checks to compare. They wanted $6 for the small jar of nutella; I think it's a dollar cheaper at Sagaya, as well as some other products. But, you get the convenience of having a store that not only has the products, but also the packaging and shipping capabilities. While I was browsing, a homeless person came in and asked for some meat samples. The lady behind the counter was courteous and offered him a sausage piece before exchanging a pleasantry to exit. Once upon a time, I owned a hot dog stand. And to own a hot dog stand, you usually need to have hot dogs to sell. That was the easy part. I also wanted to sell a few other things and that's where Alaska Sausage and Seafood came into play. They provided my with my reindeer sausage, German bratwurst (very different than a Wisconsin brat), and spicy Louisiana link. I used them for years and loved working with them. They were fast and efficient and were so helpful with last minute orders. They also have a front area for prepackaged items and gift baskets. They have a huge selection of smoked salmon for all you pescatarians. Be sure to check out the section of foreign chocolates--yum! This place is also great for your fishermen and hunters. If you bring your goods, they'll package it up for you and can even mail it to your house. I will warn you that I've heard complaints that people didn't feel that they got their entire fish back after they packaged it. If you're looking for some smoked salmon that you can just take home with you and doesn't need to be refrigerated, this place has the best assortment of options. 10th & M looked super fresh, but it was mainly frozen goods that needed to be shipped home. New Sagaya had only one non-refrigerated option. This place had both refrigerated and many non-refrigerated options. We ended up picking up smoked salmon pieces (12 oz for $15.95) in regular flavor. They had lemon and Cajun flavors as well. The employees were super friendly and let us sample a bunch of options. They also offered to give us ice packs if we wanted to try taking back the refrigerated salmon, but we weren't willing to risk it with such a long flight. read more
