Alberta Veterinary has been my vet since I relocated to Portland three years ago. They've done a terrific job keeping my eldery Bichon alive and thriving. I couldn't be happier with their care. I'm a bit amazed by those reviews that claim higher prices than expected. For example, Ashtyn C didn't get a written quote for "teeth cleaning?" Really? Does this person have any idea what can be involved with any kind of dental work for a dog? It's likely to include general anaesthesia if it's a serious cleaning. And was it "just a cleaning?" Somehow I doubt that. By the way, a mouth is a mouth. It doesn't matter if your dog is a chihuahua or a great dane, the same costs apply. In fact, chihuahuas are prone to serious and difficult dental issues due to their small mouths and tiny jaws. I've never even had a Chihuahua as an animal companion and even I know that. There's a lot about Ashtyn C's review that doesn't pass the smell test -- including his ignorance about dogs and how veterinary services are priced and shared with consumers. Didn't like the price? Then don't sign the consent form for care. I have never been provided with a significant service by Alberta Veterinary without knowing -- up front -- how much every aspect of that service would cost or likely cost and the low and high limit of the possible bill. I suppose I should give them "special credit for this," but this is standard procedure for ALL VETS. Like every other vet -- primary care or emergency -- they ITEMIZE the quote for you, providing low and high parameters and the time period for which that quote is VALID. They will then go over every aspect of service that you have questions on. I have always been given the opportunity to decide what was an essential part of the service being planned. I have always known what the service would cost. I have never been "surprised" by them. And, let's see, Hi C claimed that staff tackled and laid on top of his dog? Now, why would that be? Why would they be afraid? What exact behavior was your dog exhibiting? Was it a danger to the staff? One would assume so. Dogs can be dangerous. And Hi C was right there and didn't stop them and say, "Let us leave and plan to come back later. Maybe he needs to be sedated." I'm sure that if Hi C had expressed those concerns and sentiments, they would have accommodated their requiest. Hi C's probably the kind of dog owner who doesn't understand why they're supposed to pick up their dog's crap when out on a walk. No doubt, the world revolves around Hi C's sense of entitlement. Newsflash: my dog visits Alberta Veterinary at least once a month for a tech visit. He has never left traumatized. Then again, he's well behaved and well socialized. Maybe Hi C needs to be a little less "Hi" and a little more sensible about the behavior of their pet. Too many people these days don't use their heads, don't plan ahead, or don't plan at all. Or they blame others for their own shortcomings like not training and managing their animal companions well. Vet care is expensive. I'm low-income myself and sympathize with anyone struggling to afford vet care and sometimes having to make painful choices about what care is essential, what is crucial to my dog's quality of life, and what I can afford. If you're a pet owner who can't financially manage "surprises," then make sure you're not "surprised." Get a written quote, look into financing options, and/or see about accessing care for low-income pet owners through charitable organizations. Alberta Vet has never advertised itself as a "low cost" or "charity care" vet clinic so don't expect them to behave as one. Regardless, I have always found their costs for service highly competitive, if not fairly low. Moreover, they've ALWAYS provided me a written estimate up front for any significant care before getting my approval to procede. That includes the cost of a simple exam, a vet tech visit for monthly services, to surgery. They also do a very good job ensuring security for all patients and being aware when some patients are "reactive." That includes asking other people and their pets to vacate common areas when a reactive and potentially dangrous animal is going to be coming through. read more

I came to them after my previous vet showed they didn't care at all about my pet and could barely be bothered to hear anything about their issues before prescribing something. I cannot stand the fake talking and smiling because they know they're handing you something that says $1400 for a TEETH CLEANING. I've had this appointment lined up and ready for my girl to finally get her teeth done. The sheer amount of 1 star reviews for this hospital is very telling already - but I'm going to add another one anyways! This is the worst vet hospital I've ever entered. Set aside the fact that the staff is rude, and that the owner is extremely condescending and shouldn't work with the public. They WILL tackle and lay on top of your dog if they feel there is ANY behavior issue. Instead of stopping treatment and discussing different options with the owner they will just tackle your dog and then proceed to tell you how bad your pet is when really they're just afraid. Dr. Cates laid on top of my dog just for a blood draw instead of asking me if we wanted to bring him back on some anxiety meds. Wow. This place and Annie has some nerve. I brought my cat in towards the end of October to have a cyst removed and was told at the time that I shouldn't worry about it and it wouldn't cause any harm. I was skeptical but the Vet assured me it was ok so I paid the exam fee ($60) and left. A month passed and the cyst grew so I called back to schedule the actual removal but they wanted me to pay another exam fee which I said was a bit high considering I had already taken him in for an initial exam and just wanted to get the thing removed this time around. I wasn't rude or ask for a free exam but was immediately met with "It seems like you are trying to get a free exam and we don't do that and if you don't appreciate a doctor's time or the benefits of a pre-exam then we just won't schedule the surgery for you". This is seriously the most unprofessional, presumptuous and immature response I've gotten from anyone I've spoken to from a place of business. I'd pass on this place until Annie and the management learns how to speak to the customers that have supported them during such trying times. Update: So like 10 mins after I posted this review Annie emailed me clearly trying to do damage control (image attached). So guilty...I know. I had already emailed their manager (Chelsea) at this point and finally got a response today (image attached). To no surprise Chelsea doesn't care and for some reason thought I still wanted to be their customer so tried to break it to me gently that our "relationship" was over. Wow Chelsea. My labradors and cats have been seeing Dr. Justin Cates for over 8 yrs. We also followed him when he would move to another Veterinrian clinic and to this day now that he has his own Veterinrian clinic. While we don't live in Portland anymore when it came time to put one of my dear labs, Shayna to rest we drove from Santa Fe, NM in May 2022 as we knew we would fell safe and at peace with Dr. Cates putting Shayna to sleep. However, it left a bad taste in my mouth when I asked them when they would be taking clients and if they have any recommendations in the area. I got a response saying, "We don't know, and you should just call around." UPDATED per the owners snarky, defensive and insulting comment back - Dr. Cates. And quite honestly pure gold if you don't take it personally! I also lowered the rating, bc quite honestly he doesn't deserve anyone's business. If the owner of Alberta Vet Care really was a professional, he would have told me on the first visit that he didn't think he was the right fit for me and dog at the time. Unfortunately it too me 8 years, lots of money and a good amount of recent medical need that we are best suited with a vet that has both compassion for our pets and respect for the owners. Not only are his comment unprofessional, he's rude, judgmental and insulting to me...for being his client since he's been in business! Every other vet and specialist now that we've gone to has been able to take time to explain the ins and outs of what they think is going on with Mason in a clear and compassionate way - and there have been a few Drs at AVC that do - but they all seem to leave - I wonder why. We've given Mason a wonderful life (Dr. Cates, I'm impressed you took your time to take a look at our adventures). For a 14.5 year old dog with diagnosed kidney disease and seizures among other things and all under control at this moment, I'd say we're taking quite good care of him. Instead of a defensive vet, I'd quite prefer someone who wants to be another part of that equation in helping to ensure our senior dog lives the most comfortable he can during this time. __________________________________________________________________________ I took my senior dog here for roughly 8 years and always had a bit of an uneasy feeling depending on who I was talking to. For a few years there we really loved Dr. Kimmel and kept bringing our dog there. Fast forward to the pandemic and a 14 y/o dog and 1 year old puppy and we're finally moving on and going elsewhere. Overall there was always a bit of a money comes first sense we got from the way the clinic has been run. Most recently we've been getting news via email with links and no indication on severity of situation or urgency. It's felt like they tend to medicate over trying to figure out the root cause of the issue. If we have any follow up questions, which we always have, they lean towards scheduling an appt at an extra fee. I can only imagine the toll the pandemic has places on these businesses and have tried to be understanding but in the end, I don't trust that this clinic or the way it's run will be the best place to address any further issues with my now very senior pup. I would agree with some of the other reviews here about the owner. I only had a few interactions with him, but the most notable was when he told me over the phone that my dog's teeth were a mess after a dental cleaning & extraction. I was already worried about his well-being and that felt very unprofessional and uncompassionate, seeing his defensive comments here really hit me hard and we certainly a big-ol-red-flag to take our pups elsewhere. I can't say enough good things about AVC. We began taking our German Shepherd puppy to Alberta Veterinary Care when we got her two months ago. As soon as you walk in, they weigh your dog and then you go straight to an exam room. I really appreciate that because it eliminates the waiting room interaction with other animals which can be super stressful for a nervous pup. We've seen 3 different doctors, all of which have been very kind, professional, and informational. Their techs are very kind as well. We have never had to wait more than 5 minutes to see a tech or doctor. They're very punctual. The first doctor we saw (Dr. Cates) made sure to extensively talk to us about our breed, explaining all of the different socialization that she needed to endure within the next few months. All of the doctors explain everything in detail and are sure to answer questions that you have. Perhaps my second favorite part about AVC is that they email you a full report with notes about your visit. It's super convenient and you can reference it later instead of scrambling to write down notes during your visit. Oh, and you pay for everything in your exam room instead of having to do it at the front on your way out. read more

I stopped by the website to see what time y'all opened. I saw these scathing reviews and am stunned. It seems they all have the connecting thread of a heightened sense of entitlement from these unruly customers. Didn't gleefully accommodate an appointment who showed up late at the end of the day. Didn't have a crystal ball handy to know when a patient may choose to move on to another clinic to free up a space. I must say, I have had nothing but the most supportive and informed care here. When procedures were a bit out of my budget at the time, staff here bent over backwards to do what they could from performing the most important procedures while holding off on the ones less vital to offering free food to get me by until payday to even doing dental work that wasn't discussed in the initial visit for free. Y'all love your jobs and have been infinitely kind to me and mine. read more

Have always had great experiences here. The staff is fantastic, and they seem pretty transparent in how things are handled. At our previous vet, our dog would go in the back while we just waited in the lobby during the whole exam, and I was glad that that was not the case here. Prices definitely add up, but I think the costs are fairly comparable to other places. The facility is really nice. I have not dealt with them during any emergency situation, but I hope that they would keep spots open daily for emergencies. read more

I have been a client of Dr. Cates for about 15 years. Throughout the years, I have had my share of several high maintenance dogs that required frequent and very consistent care. My cat was in need of a regular veterinary clinic that was closer to home. I'm so glad I decided to give Alberta Veterinary Care a try. Dr. Cates and all the staff members have been so incredibly helpful and they truly care about you and your pet. Unfortunately my kitty, Jezebel was diagnosed with kidney failure, (Heartbreaking). Not only did Dr. Cates call me to talk at length about the different options, he also sent quite a few email articles my way. The staff helped me to get Jezebel's food changed and to learn how to give her intravenous fluids to help with hydration and making her more comfortable. It's nice because I can purchase more of the special cat food or fluid bags right from their office. I'd definitely recommend Alberta Veterinary Care to anyone who is in need of a regular vet clinic. The folks at the front desk are lovely, the techs do a good job with intake, routine vaccinations, etc., and the vets (I've seen three) are thorough, caring and kind. They do their best to book techs when possible to keep costs down. It's not the least expensive out there but it's worth it to have a good vet in the neighborhood. read more

Pre pandemic I had been taking my dog to Dr. Cates since he was a puppy. I always had great care, I was able to get an appointment within the week and my dog liked the experience, things we good. Now fast forward to the pandemic, like most vets it was hard to get in which I understood. Now pre-pandemic I was always able to go in with my dog, so come COVID when I couldn't I don't know what happened, but I dropped him off for him to get his ear looked at and cleaned and some medication applied. I get a call from Dr. Cates saying that my dog absolutely wouldn't cooperate and that in order to properly treat him they would need to sedate him, I knew my dog didn't like having his ears touched so I trusted him with his recommendation. Fast forward to another ear infection, I couldn't get into Alberta Veterinary Care so I went to an urgent care place and warned them he doesn't like his ears touched and may need to be sedated but to let me know before they do so. I come to find out my dog cooperated just fine and was super good and no one had to hold him down nor did they even think he needed to be sedated. A month goes by and I go to my follow-up appointment to make sure the infection is gone with Dr. Cates and he tells me things are fine, but my dog really is hard to handle and suggested that he be put on anti-anxiety meds anytime he comes to visit the vet... I was irate! He then responded with "It's just $20.00! In a kind of a snotty tone. I told him my dog has been to other vets due to not being able to come in and see him and none of them seem to have an issue with handling him and that he is just trying to drain money out of me OR something happened without me being present in the appointment that caused my dog to not feel safe or trusting of him or his staff. I honestly really loved this place and the care they provided for my pet prior to the pandemic. Since June I have now switched vets. I recently brought my dog in for yet another ear infection and my new vet and their staff have no issue handling my dog, he didn't need to be sedated to clean his ear and apply medication, the new vet actually commented about how good he was even before I asked how he did. I asked if he needed anti-anxiety meds and my new vet laughed and replied with "No, he's just a 3-year-old lab with a lot of energy! We get it he's excited and in a new place with new smells." Anyways I am not sure what happened, but it was enough for me to not feel safe continuing to take my pet to Dr. Cates. Especially during a pandemic as a small business owner, I wasn't sure if my business was going to stay in business, so adding on extra unnecessary costs like medicine he doesn't need was such a slap in the face. It also had me speculate how come 3 separate vets I took him to didn't have the same complaint and could handle him just fine, but Dr. Cates and staff could not? I think the most disappointing part was Dr. Cate's communication over the phone with me, when I told him other vets didn't have this issue, he just acted like he didn't hear me and kept saying "it's only $20.00 for anti-anxiety medication", he really wanted my dog on anti-anxiety meds and instead of listening to me and acknowledging that he could be in the wrong, listen I get it you're overworked and stressed, but that phone conversation alone plus the proof from other vets that could do the job without sedation or pushing anti-anxiety medication for treating the same illness immediately made my decision easy to not continue taking my dog there. Last month, my young, healthy cat Ellie broke her leg. I was not in a good financial position and I was not anticipating vet bills so soon after adopting a healthy kitten. Two different vets told me that repairing the break would be difficult and costly and recommend amputation. So, I looked around and called every vet in town. Alberta Veterinary Clinic was able to do the surgery for the most reasonable price and I could not be happier with the level of care Ellie received. Her incision healed like a dream with no complications. I felt, overwhelmingly, like the staff at Albeta cared about me and my cat. They accommodated my busy work schedule to take care of us. We recieved caring, individual attention over the phone, as well as in the office. I will be taking my cat to Alberta for any of her further veterinary needs and recommending the clinic to any other pet owner I know. I can't believe how reasonable their prices are (standard for the area, but with far more individual attention). If I could rate more than 5 stars, I would. I'm sure any pet parent would agree that their pet is worth the very best level of care, and they will find it here. Very, very happy that this is my local vet for my 2 cats. -Vet techs and doctor are confident and explain everything they are doing and handle the animals professionally. (And they are very friendly) -Prices are reasonable and well explained. -The clinic is clean, quiet and organized. You are able to do entire visits from the exam rooms to avoid issues with other animals. -Has medications and supplements in stock. They do send out labs but do dental and surgical procedures in house. This is not set up for emergencies and they are closed on Mondays. Great local vet clinic. I have had animals my entire life so I have lots of experience with veterinary offices. I am unhappy with Alberta Veterinary Care because when I called about my dog being in pain and possibly increasing one of her pain meds, it took them 16 hours to respond! In addition to that, everything at this clinic is so expensive. You are talking triple the cost than some other clinics. My cat needed to have one of her canine teeth removed. At Alberta the surgery was going to start around $800 (key word is start). At another clinic the entire surgery cost $275. read more

I don't know where to begin. This office (especially Dr. Cates) have meant the world to my family these past 2 weeks. My dog is going through an immune process not written in literature and her treatment is extensive and scary. Due to financial constraints, we were unable to heed his advice to admit her for around-the-clock-care at an emergency hospital. This is where he stepped up and assumed total outpatient care for her. He is in constant contact with me, has gotten her in at a moments notice for critical outpatient procedures, and is doing everything he can to make our bill as low as possible, while trying to save my 2-year-old's life. His knowledge, compassion and communication have been beyond anything I could ever have hoped for. This place is incredible and I can not recommend this team, and Dr. Cates enough. read more

I had an unexpected delay in my arrival time and was 2 minutes past the 10 min appt cut off. 12 min late and they canceled my appt. This decision to leave is heartbreaking but also necessary due to my growing disappointment in their care over the past year. Policy is now their priority and not understanding and care. (August 5,2018 Update) it's sad to report that some things just don't last forever! Customer service is one of those things that is hard to maintain at a certain level. This place is not the same as it once was two years ago when we were so happy with this place. Dr. Corbett is no longer there and others as well. Our most recent visit was with a doctor who seemed to just throw darts at a wall to see what worked. $450 later we walked out the door with not only no answers but more importantly no follow up. I had to stay on top of them to get the results of a Urine Analysis. Nobody bothered to follow up to solve our dogs problem. We used to get random calls checking on him in the past as well as calls to make sure he has been taking certain pills or shots, etc. now nothing! Just took our money and here we are sitting here with no answers. So, we made a decision to no longer come to this vet. No reason to keep us coming back here. We have a new Lhasa Apso 3 month old puppy. This was our first visit here. The office is very clean, and professional. They had nice music playing. A very pleasant atmosphere. We first met with Annie who was at the front desk and greeted us. Annie made a very good impression on us, Annie made us feel very welcome! We then met with one of their Technicians, Kerri who met with us in a private room. Kerri was as well very welcoming, professional and did a great job at answering as many questions as she could as well as coordinate the preparation to meet with the doctor. Briefly thereafter Dr. Shavonne Corbett came in and greeted us. Dr. Corbett really took her time with us and was very thorough. We felt very comfortable with her and Dr. Corbett really instilled confidence in us that we came to the right place for our 'Lord Kingsley' puppy. As we were leaving I spent some time back at the front desk and met with Dominique who was as well very friendly. We have to say that all four of the team members we met were fantastic human beings. It was so obvious they have a passion for what they are doing!!! My wife and I had a wonderful experience today and we are so happy we chose Alberta Veterinary Clinic to take care of Lord Kingsley!! I can't say enough about how happy I am we found Dr. Cates and the whole team at Alberta Vet Care. I have two french bulldogs that have been seen here for approximately 3.5 years and it's been a great experience - from back disc surgery to tooth extractions to everything in-between, Dr. Cates is really knowledgeable and takes him with his clients, getting on the phone to explain things to me after each appointment and sending follow up notes to my email. We were in town visiting and had just returned from a hike when our 3 year old Great Dane, Zoe, started having some scary symptoms. This clinic was the closest to where we were, so we rushed her in and everyone was so kind and attentive. Although they were almost closing, they took a look at her, gave her a diagnosis and referred us to another place that was open 24/7 where she could get the specialized care she needed. The entire time they were so patient with our panicked state and so sweet to Zoe. The next day we received a follow up email, checking in to see how she was doing. My dog has been a client for two years and I am so very disappointed: surly technicians, poor communication, a rude and defensive veterinarian, and zero care for my pet. I had an appointment at 4:15, I called the secretary an hour before the appointment to tell her I would be 10 to 15 minutes late. I asked her if I should reschedule the appointment or just come and be 10 to 15 minutes late. She said just come and if I was going to be any later than that to call them and let them know. We showed up at our appointment 15 minutes late. They showed us to an examination room. The technician came in and proceeded to ream me out for being late. Her name is Tracy. She said "we don't have time for people to be late" I explained that I had spoken with Haley the secretary at the front desk and she had told me to come if I was not going to be any more than 15 minutes late. Tracy the technician, who seems a bit surly and angry, said that she marked us as a no-show. And she continued to berate me. I asked her if she was an assistant or a technician or a secretary, and she said she was more than a technician. She continued to angrily confront me verbally and I asked her if we could have someone else and that I didn't want her around my dog. She said she would get her manager to come in. Justin (a dr we have never seen before) came in and told me he "...didn't appreciate how I was speaking to his technician who was more than a technician and not an assistant." He was very angry and told me it was my fault for being late. Again, I tried to explain that the secretary told me it was OK to be 10 to 15 minutes late. He proceeded to rant at me how everybody is angry at his technicians and they're backed up with surgeries for a month and a half and people are not very nice to them. I was wondering why this is my issue. Again, I was told to come 10 to 15 minutes late and that would be OK. I asked the doctor if this was my issue, and he said yes this is your problem because you were late. And he proceeded to go on another rant about how people should not be late. At this point, 20 minutes had passed since I was supposed to be checked in. Thinking about what kind of care of these angry people we're going to take out on my dog, I just said that I would find another veterinarian. I asked for our records and they said they would email them to us. I can't say how disappointed I am for the poor communication, the angry and surly treatment by both patient and Drs., and how after two years and multiple thousands of dollars that I've spent at their business I was treated with very little respect, and there was ZERO care about my dog!! Went to this vet for over 5 years. Was 5 minutes late for an appointment and was bumped, no big deal. Then a month later, his seizure medication was on back order and they wouldn't let me talk to the Dr. So basically because they didn't get their money for 1 appointment they'd rather let my dog have seizures then help. read more

Prices are high; professionalism is low. Multiple mistakes and miscommunication, hard to handle when a much-loved pet's health is in question. Sharing notes with a few neighbors, some of us really liked a vet who left to work elsewhere but we all agree that Justin, the owner, is unprofessional and gets defensive at the slightest question, and front desk service can be great or awful, depending on who you get. As other reviewers have noted, this business seems more interested in making money than providing compassionate care. read more

Dr. Cates and the AVC team helped me identify and solve an issue that I had with my boxer after my long-time vet couldn't. She was losing weight, losing color, losing spirit, and had developed a scabby skin condition all over her body. Dr. Cates walked me through the possibilities, identified an allergy, and carefully made a recommendation based on her history of mast cell tumors. She is now in PERFECT health, happy as ever, and AVC is now my vet for both of my dogs. The staff here is friendly, efficient, and caring. They do a great job.
