I recently adopted a rescue dog. One of the perks was a free visit at this clinic, which I had never been to. After 21 days with bocce my dog I felt it was a good time to take advantage of the certificate. What a great place! The Alyssa, the tech and Dr. Watson both were just so kind, compassionate, and understanding of the fear factor of my new rescue dog. They took their time building rapport with him, handled him gently, addressed his anxiety, listened to me, answering my questions with respect and care. There was no attempt at unnecessary upsell, which I have experienced at other vets in this town. Just good care, including a Mani/pedi done with much thoughtfulness. We will be going back. read more

I would recommend avoiding this clinic. We scheduled to take our new kitten in for his first visit. I will say the vet tech and the gals working at the front desk were all lovely. However, that stopped when the doctor came into the room. Dr. Lockhart came in BOOMING with a loud voice that event startled me, not considering the tiny kitten she was there to evaluate. The blue hair also took me by surprise, when I expect to see a professional doctor (that is when I should have realized the direction this was going). I shared some concerns I had about the kitten's behavior and boy did the doctor have an opportunity to rack up the charges. First comes the ultrasound (cost was included in the exam), which wasn't able to be read clearly, so then comes a urine analysis ($126) AND an X-ray ($205) (on top of the $110 exam). The urine analysis was not needed, as the X-ray revealed the perceived issue. So instead of taking things one at a time, the doctor did them simultaneously, so the charges were now quickly adding up. Out the door, we paid over $460. Doctor comes back in and tells us that there is a major issue requiring a specialist and surgery, and that we need to go ASAP. She pushes for her friend's speciality office. Obviously we were apprehensive, which she responded with we could rehome the kitten to her friend (mind you, I have an expensive breed), saying they would make "great parents, they are both vets". With the response we got from the doctor, it seemed she really didn't have the knowledge or experience to give us substantive guidance, which was concerning. Sensing something fishy going on, we decided to go to a reputable, nation wide vet, who said what the kitten is experiencing is to be monitored, but absolutely normal. Our new vet is surprised with the experience we had at Pet Samaritan. I would recommend choosing another vet, who will better serve YOU, your PET, and your WALLET. We needed to bring my dog to a vet for urinalysis (as advised by our home vet, since we're only visiting Portland). I'm thankful to have found this place as they take same-day appointments and it would have been more expensive to go to an emergency vet. We saw Dr. Zuver and we were very impressed with her. She was very patient and thorough at explaining everything to us. She is probably the best vet I've ever worked with! Now I wish she can be our main vet for our pup! read more

Yesterday we went to euthanize our sweet, elderly cat, Missy. The doctor was very gentle, kind, and extremely professional. We love her! What I didn't love was members of the staff hanging out in the break room that as located next to the room we were in. They were talking very loudly and laughing while we were mourning the death of our sweet baby. As we walked out of the room, they made eye contact with us and quickly slammed the door with one of their feet. Someone should talk to these people about compassion. It made the whole experience feel like a nightmare. read more

Will not be back. Just so you know, it's $99 just to walk in the door. I brought my two pets in today for booster shots- one of which had been in to see them a couple of weeks prior. The $99 "exam" consisted of them listening to their hearts with a stethoscope and checking their teeth, nothing more. The vaccinees plus the "exam" was almost $500 for two perfectly healthy animals. I will not be back. I paid for the vaccines, but I regret it. The vet, while super nice, was obviously dealing with a lot, and unless it's an absolute emergency, skip it this place and find clinics that can offer lower cost vaccines. read more

I have two dogs that I've been taking to Pet Samaritan for the past 2 and a half years and have had both positive and negative experiences. I'll start off with the pros. One of my dogs is a super friendly, easy going pup who actually loves going to the vet, and Pet Samaritan does a really good job with her. They also have a great annual care plan that is super helpful if you are an owner of an older pet who may need more checkups. Now, for the not so great things. Exams are super rushed compared to my previous vets. My second pup is a highly anxious senior German Shepherd who really does not like going to the vet, and after the many visits we've had, I am left less than satisfied with their approach with him. I have said multiple times at multiple different visits that I would prefer to be in the room with him when getting a vet tech exam, as he is super anxious and fidgety with other people, even with trazadone. However, Pet Samaritan really pushes bringing the dogs to the back to do testing, and I am not sure why it's such an issue to have the blood test done in a room with me present. This last time, they brought him to the back even though I reiterated that he does best with me in the room, and when they came back they said he struggled and so they had issues with the needle and he was bleeding. As an owner, you know your pet, and this would not have happened had I been in the room calming him down, so I cannot recommend this clinic for pets that tend to be more anxious. read more

Finally! A vet that accepts new patients! I am new-ish to Portland, and trying to find a vet for my fur baby was proving difficult. Thankfully i stumbled on this place in my new neighborhood. Everyone from the front desk to the drs and techs were so helpful, patient and caring. They explained everything clearly and took time to get to know my baby. And they all went crazy for him, which definitely helped. So happy to have found this place! read more

I brought my pug in to get her nails done. They made 2 of her nails bleed and didn't bother to tell me. The others are broken (jagged sharp nail pieces/split nails). The nails that they made bleed they didn't cut the nails all the way/ "properly" and are touching her foot pad. I brought all this to the managers (Sherry) attention before we left and she did offer to "fix" them, I declined. They couldn't do it right the first time and I wasn't going to put my dog through anymore torture/risk them making her bleed again! Once I got home and looked at her nails closer I call the manager and spoke with her about how I didn't think it was appropriate that I be charged for the "service" my dog received. She said they would refund me. They never did. If you enjoy paying people to torture your animal this is the clinic for you. If not, I would find some other place to take your pet! read more

I have had consistently good experiences with Pet Sam! My dog loves going there, and the staff seem to know her by name. We participate in their discount program, I can't remember what it's called, but we pay an annual fee and get reduced and free services, it's already been worth it. I also have pet insurance but it's been great to have both I really enjoy the drop off option as somebody that works full time and is the sole owner of my pup. Sometimes it's been hard to get appointments but I think they increased their staff and there's been lots of flexibility. I've only had one difficult experience which was a bad blood draw, but that was an easy fix. read more

I can't quite put my finger on why, but the folks here are a bit aloof and the continuity of care is somewhat lacking. The perk is that they have a lot of availability and that's the main reason why I initially went there. If you have a relatively healthy pets they're probably good enough. However, I have an elderly dog with heart and neuro conditions. They refilled her heart medication in a tablet form that was 4x bigger than the one she has been taking for years, which has caused her to inadvertently miss some doses because she spits them out. They also gave me contradictory advice about an arthritis shot. I do not feel comfortable establishing ongoing care with this clinic read more

This is my second visit for my dog for a teeth extraction. Upon the first visit is where they told me that my dog needed this operation pains in his back molar. During the initial conversation I was told that the procedure would cost some where around $200. This morning's drop off I was "estimated" it would cost $850+. I understand how estimates work but that difference is criminal and misleading. I'm not going to not pay for the operation but the person who quoted me the original cost is not capable and will lead others like me to find other vet clinics. They are handling COVID well, but if you are going to pay vastly different rates and can't get feed back (visually - due to the pandemic), honestly I will take me and my buddy elsewhere. Staff may have a hard time understanding basic instructions and information about your pet. They may be extra sensitive about this, and be unable to handle it professionally. The vets and upper level staff are great, but lower level techs not so much. They do not seem to value, honor, or care about the unique bond between animal-person, and treat each customer like a number. read more

I have 3 issues to address. I try not to say I don't recommend a business. Everyone's experiences are different, but I can address valuable complaints. 1. Professional Practice 2. Safety/Best practice in care 3. Manipulation with cost/packages/resources. 1. Professionalism. Came to pick up cat. No other customers. I said hello. Both ladies at at the front desk did not look up from computer. Again I said hello. I'd like to pick up my cat please. One of them did not Acknowledge me and the other held her finger up. They were looking up the status of an animal they sent to Dove Lewis. It was a cat who had some traumatic injury. A few minutes later a man came in behind me. They asked him what he needed while I stood there. They promptly got his cat for him. I still stood there. Finally the girl rolled her eyes and asked me What could she do for me. I asked nicely for my cat. Then sat and waited as people came and went. They continued to look up this other animal. I felt discriminated against. I guess because I'm not a good looking man. 2. Safety. My cat was sick with uti type issues. We took her more than once. Said she was fine. I started telling my husband to let them know how many times a day she used the litter box. They finally saw her....again. Yes she had a "raging" uti per the vet tech. And informed me to keep a close eye on her and explained how important it was to take care of her appropriately. While I appreciated her advice I told her my husband called many times. But bc she was playing, eating, drinking normally AND this very vet said she was fine we let it go on another week. The vet told us to feed her special wet food. And I could get the RX from them. The vet tech told me that was not true and any wet food would work. Well, she got worse and he got us the wet food a couple of days later. She's better. I felt my fur baby was not safe at this vet. There seems to be a lack of communication. They definitely lack in provision of care. Did I mention they said it wasn't important to get flea medicine? 3. Manipulation of Cost. We were charged for vet exams each vaccine. And they spread them out! Also they charged for vet exam when they were micro chipped. The vet I currently go to is free for my gsd. And I do not skimp out on my pet's care. Fast forward thousands of dollars later. We took the cats to the vet my dog goes to and this vet kept jo shot records and did not give rabies vaccines which are required. When we asked them they said it was fine. They didn't need them. These may be small issues but they add up. While I think the vet office my dog goes to is also spendy, I will gladly pay to know I am giving all 3 of my fur babies the best care AND care we can afford. I have now turned 3 people off to Pet Samaritan and will continue to do so. And whoever had the sick cat the girls at the desk were gawking at, I really hope they are ok. It broke my heart to watch such activity. Your cat matters and is not a laughing/privacy violation matter. Oh two stars? It's bc last year they were able to get us in after we rescued the little kittens from a Ferrill cat. read more

This clinic refused to spay my 10-month-old, tiny, cat because she was very early in a pregnancy. They first were honest and said, "we refuse to abort baby kittens" and when I asked why they said "you're not going to change my mind" and when I replied I just wanted to understand, is it dangerous - they said it was more dangerous because "the uterus is enlarged" - the uterus Is enlarged, but it is Not more dangerous than any other spay And the pregnancy Is Actually dangerous for my cat. They also Did Not tell me they were Anti-abortion before the spay appointment and still said they couldn't guarantee that they would return my deposit. read more

I used to come here regularly for my cats checkups, but after I moved and split with my partner I couldn't afford to come here anymore. They were always great for checkups and used to have a few sweet receptionists working there who I always really liked. I called them one day in tears because my cat had been battling thyroid cancer-my ex took her to the vet, gave me a prescription for her and I just followed dosing instructions. I was made aware that even with surgery or radiation it was unlikely she would live through treatment or long afterward. When it was time to put her down, I was very upset and just trying to find a place that would be able to fit her in so I could minimize her suffering. It was evident she was very sick just from looking at her. The receptionist asked me for her records, which I didn't have because my ex had taken her. She began treating me like I was there to kill my cat, and they insisted on doing $350 worth of tests on her to diagnose her. Mind you, I don't make a lot of money and that was a significant cost to me. I was beside myself and just wanted to end her misery, and all the receptionist did was treat me like a criminal trying to kill my beloved companion. In my grief I agreed to tests so she wouldn't have to suffer any longer. The vet who saw me was sympathetic and very understanding. He was a relief(?) vet just covering for the day and I wish he worked at a regular clinic because I would go in to see him anywhere. Before I left I paid my bill, which was $480, nearly my entire paycheck. It was worth it to make sure my cat didn't die in agony. I was furious about the way the receptionist treated me and at no point did they ever explain why the tests were necessary. Just an overall horrible experience and received no sympathy or comfort from this horrible woman working the front desk. I will never return here after the way I was treated. I never received a sympathy card like other vets offices do, was never offered any comfort besides some time to sob and say goodbye to my sweet little cat. There are a million places that will treat you better in a pinch that won't try to bleed you dry, or treat you like a criminal for trying to end your pet's suffering. read more

For more than 18 years, I remain a proud customer of Pet Samaritan because of their caring and kind, and prompt service. No matter if I bring my pets in for annual physicals (and I recommend Pet Samaritans' insurance plan which is affordable) --- or, nail trims, etc. Everyone, from the Front Desk clerks to the Techs and especially their fine staff of Veterinarians never disappointed me. When my one cat had to be put down in an emergency situation, the Techs were at the front door when I arrived and ready to help. My Vet (Dr Ericcson) was so kind and allowed me time to say goodbye to my best friend. Days later I received a Sympathy card which had all the staff's signatures. It was deeply moving and heartfelt. My cats are in good hands at Pet Samaritan. read more

Really disappointed in this practice. The people who work there are spotty, either they are friendly and try to be helpful (props to them!), or extremely disenchanted and disengaged. Previous low-star reviewers note the apathy and lack of detail in care, and they are not wrong. They don't seem to be managing Covid well compared to other practices I've interacted with. They are busy and rushed. Or maybe this is how they always have been. TWICE I was given the wrong dosage of medication. (This is a huge oversight). In their reply below they mention not having this written down in our chart. That's yet another oversight, because it did happen and I had to personally drive back to get additional medication I'm now in the process of making a difficult decision about a dog we have in our care, and the way they handled it was not only unprofessional but insensitive. Highly recommend Kenton Animal Hospital or Overlook Animal Hospital if you're looking for a vet that cares. Our other dogs go there and I've only had the best experience and client care. read more

I'm fairly new to Portland and hadn't established a vet for my two cats yet. I thought this could be the perfect place as it was walking distance from my apartment. I brought my older cat here just for a check up. They were running behind schedule so I had to wait an extra 20 minutes past my appointment time. Not a huge deal - I wasn't in a rush that day and I know emergencies come up. When I did see the doctor, it was someone different than who I'd scheduled with. She told me the doctor I was going to see what still in surgery. Again, not a huge deal, it happens. She quickly looked over my cat and mentioned she looked good for her age but needed her teeth cleaned. She also mentioned blood work just to check that everything was fine, but that it would be $300+ dollars for a blood panel. WOW. I said I'd think about it. I also asked her to check my cat's anal glands since she's had problems in the past. They did and said they expressed them since they were a bit full (gross but it happens!). When I checked out, it was nearly $200 (which included a first time patient promotional discount they were running)! I lived in NYC for 6 years and never paid that much. It would have been one thing if I got an attentive exam and thoughtful care, but after waiting for 20 minutes, the doctor was in and out and didn't seem to care much. $200 for a quick exam and anal gland expression is nuts. Then, my cat seemed to be in pain for the next couple of days. I've never seen her act that way after having her anal glands expressed. It seemed like they didn't do it with enough care or finesse which caused some irritation. I didn't like that. They also emailed me a quote for having her teeth cleaned. I'm not kidding - it was $1,200 which INCLUDED a discount. And that didn't include any extractions if she needed them. No thanks. I don't doubt that this place is competent, but the level of care I received based on what they are charging just doesn't match up. Maybe I'm not shi-shi enough to come here, but there are better vets in PDX for the money. read more

I had a horrible experience with Pet Samaritan. My cat has likely been in pain for over 2 months because they forgot to tell me about him having urine crystals. Plus they have shitty service and are overpriced. I took my cat Susu to Pet Samaritan in May because he was drooling and I suspected dental issues. It was confirmed he needed to have teeth pulled. They had a last minute opening for the following day. I was promised a price quote by the end of the day, which I never received. I went ahead and took him for his procedure because he needed it anyway and would have been in pain if he had to wait. As somebody who's owned multiple cats for decades, I thought I had a pretty good idea of the range vets charge for dental procedures. Turns out I was way off because my previous vet charged $450 for this same procedure last year when my other cat needed dental care, but at Pet Samaritan my total for exam and dental ended up costing $1,700. I had dropped Susu off first thing in the morning for his procedure and was told I'd get a call when he was ready for pick up. I never got that call, so I ended up just showing up at closing time. They were shuffling about 10 different pets' charts and obviously had too much on their plates. They finally brought Susu out, charged me, and sent us on our way. From what they told me at discharge, everything was normal. I didn't receive any paperwork whatsoever. I got an email with a receipt only, no post-op info, no lab results, nothing for my records. Jump forward to yesterday when Susu was yowling and peeing outside the litter box. I probably should have just found him a new vet then, but seeing that I'm new to the city and many vets won't see new patients or book extremely far out for new people, I took him back to Pet Samaritan because I wanted to get him taken care of. The assistant asked me a ton of questions about his habits, how many litter boxes in the house, anything else out of the ordinary, took his vitals, etc. When the vet comes in she mentions that they had found crystals on his urine at his last visit. Excuse me, what? Nobody ever told me. She says she is going to run an inquiry to try to find out what happened. But meanwhile my cat has likely been in pain and suffering for 2 months because they dropped the ball. He is the sweetest cat and just suffered in silence. Now they're going to run a urinalysis and all the steps that they should have done 2 months ago. And they had the nerve to charge me for today's appointment when his health issues absolutely should have been addressed at his original visit. Plus I got some bs advice about litter boxes because they want to try and act like it might just be behavioral problems even though he absolutely had a medical issue they ignored so it never got treated. I don't even feel like I received a proper apology for how much the ball was dropped. Then I was left waiting again because it seems like they don't have a smooth process for discharging pets after appointments. I'm so livid right now. I'll be finding another vet for my cats. The only slightly positive thing about taking him back today was getting test results that I should have already received. read more

A little too expensive for me to continue to deal with that level of apathy/ennui from a medical team. None of them gave me an educated vibe. I am also a little skeptic of how they treat my cat since covid I can not monitor what they are doing and she seemed pretty traumatized for exams, and not nearly as much from other visits. Said they cleaned her ears but they looked EXACTLY THE SAME. Considering that they didn't really help me with my questions/concerns It didn't build my trust in them to do major treatments long term. Chart notes from the vet were a little unprofessional and not helpful of how to get my cat to gain weight, just ranted how thin she was. I've been a customer of Pet Sam for over 20 years, and was happy with the care they [mostly Dr. Sue Erickson] provided. I had a gap between cats, then the pandemic happened. Next time I needed their attention, they'd moved across the street and Dr. Sue had disappeared. When I brought my "new" cat for wellness check a couple of things bothered me: Nobody introduced themselves or wore name tags, I wasn't even sure who was the vet. And there was no dental exam, which is critical to health, pets included. I will be very interested to see how things are going at an upcoming appointment. read more

On the positive side, the location is convenient and the assistant was great. After reading the condescending clinic comments on other reviews I am lowering my rating. Our last visit to the clinic was the final straw. We took our dog because she was coughing and at the time their system was not working, so they could not check the records. The vet said she would review the records when the system is back up. Weeks to more than a month passed and nothing; no call. No follow up to see how our dog is doing. That is NOT customer service. In previous visits, we got the feeling that the staff that works there, including the vets, do not have a sense of care for their patients. We've had extremely long wait times, both waiting to be seen when we arrived early on time for our appointment and also for the medication. You may be walking distance for us, but we're going somewhere else next time. Our pets deserve better. read more

Avoid this place, terrible service and 2-4x the cost of other near by vets. Been going here for years and had previously had good care and at slightly above average prices. In the last 12 months It's been one terrible experience after another. Last time their computers were down so they couldn't lookup anything, fill prescriptions, or process payments. This time I waited 45 mins after the exam to get a prescription. I finally asked the front desk to just write out the prescription so I can get it filled at another pharmacy. At first they refused to issue it saying it could only be filled there. After insisting Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board rules mandate they provide the prescription, they relented and wrote out the script. Lets talk about pricing. They charge 4x retail pricing for basic antibiotics. They also quoted $1600-2000 for cleaning out an abscess and dental cleaning with up to 2 extractions. Two close by vets quoted $500-1200 for the same work, $1200 being for extracting all 30 teeth. read more

On the 27 of August I had the Worst visited ever never in my life while having my pets have I ever been so disrespected. The Vet Kennedy was so rude to us told us that our cat was really sick by only touching her and looking at her after I told her I had to go and we were going to look for other resources because I couldn't afford the x-rays that were $300 she decided to call the humane society and make up lies my gf told her she was going to go to work she got really upset and started telling us that our cat was going to die by midnight if I did not take her somewhere where they had surgeons and even asked me if I wanted to utilize my kitty!! And even threaten us by saying the she will call animal service on us in front of her clients after leaving the place and going to Hannah the pet society they told us that my kitten was 100% healthy even called pet Samaritan to make sure they have a second opinion the veterinarian at Hannah had X-rays done on the cat there is nothing wrong with my cat I would never return to Pet Samaritan clinic and I will make sure that everybody knows how rude and disrespectful they were with us read more

REVIEW UPDATE-- I took Monster to his old vet in Seattle, where they suggested removing the growth and not the entire TOE before knowing what the growth was exactly. They were also surprised that any other veterinarian would suggest such a thing. Especially since the toe is one of his most weight bearing. They removed the growth and did a beautiful job and as it turns out the mass was NOT cancerous. Has I gone with pet samaritans coaching my sweet English bulldog would be without and entirely useful toe! Not only would I have been mad at myself for amputating his toe unnecessarily but I would have been out 1500 dollars. Still flabbergasted by this place. Glad I followed my momma instincts. I brought my dog Monster in about 6 months ago for a mass his back toe. They biopsied it with a needle and sent the cells in to a pathologist. A mast cell tumor was completely ruled out, and they said it may just be scar tissue, but that a sarcoma could not be ruled out. I thought the scar tissue thing sounded odd, but hey I'm not a vet. I just went back in because I could tell it's gotten a bit bigger and they told me the next best step would be to amputate his toe (1500 dollars) I immediately felt weird about it without knowing for sure what it is so I called my old vet in Seattle. She told me there are two other ways to biopsy it by sending a piece of the tumor in before having to go as far as amputating his most weight bearing toe. Thank god for her or I would have never known this and paid for a surgery that I might not even need. I'm honestly disgusted as I feel like this place is majorly out for your money just like a lot of other corporate vets. I absolutely won't be returning and will gladly drive up to Seattle for the biopsy and the surgery(if he needs it) as it's hard to find a trustworthy vets office these days. I wish I could get my money and my time back as I could have had this biopsied months ago and known what it was long ago. But we all know that's not going to happen. The employees here have never been rude but I also never felt as welcomed or like they truly enjoyed seeing Monster when we came in like my old vet did. It was always so comforting walking in to my old vets office. I strongly advise spending your money and getting your precious pets care elsewhere. read more

I have always had a really wonderful experience at Pet Samaritan with my dog and cat. The staff has always been friendly and understanding. I feel that the vets have always given me honest suggestions about what has been absolutely necessary vs. something to think about for the future. My dog has had some minor mystery symptoms and previous vets at VCA heavily pushed for expensive tests that all ended up being inconclusive. Yet they still pushed for more tests. At Pet Sam, the vets have always said my dog is healthy and that further testing can be discussed if there are any concerning changes. I greatly appreciate Pet Sam for this honesty. I'm PISSED. This was my WORST business experience since coming to Portland over a year and a half ago. There is so much wrong with this vet that I don't know where to begin. Well, let's start with the interior. In the lobby there is a door completely smothered with colors and letters telling you you can win a cash prize by referring friends. Seems to me, if they want to refer you, they will, and if they refer you just for money, that's not right. On my first visit, an exam for my two new lop-eared bunnies, I was early but seen 20 minutes late. I did not like the attendant who tried to weigh my bunnies and take their temperature AT ALL. He reached in to pick up one, it kicked, he started going, "WOAH, woah woah! Calm down now!" and barely managed to get it back in the cage. The second one was so upset by him, and he was so upset by her, that he just stuck her back and went to get the vet. Not only did he not seem to know what he was doing, but he also seemed as freaked out as my rabbits. (I will say I liked the attendant of my second visit.) It's EXPENSIVE! Good lord! $90 for an exam for two rabbits?? Maybe it's normal, but if I were a vet and not doing horribly I'd at least try to give a discount if you have two checked at the exact same time. Not everybody can afford such high prices, and I think by charging so much a vet discourages some people from giving their animals the best possible care. The main rabbit care man, Dr. Voorhees, doesn't really listen to you. He'll quietly interrupt you and begin going off on a tangent before you can ask what you really want to know. I did like his gentle demeanor at first, but soon learned better. He knows how to handle rabbits and that's where it ends. During the exam, I asked whether my female bunny's genital area was too messy and might cause some kind of problem, since her fur had urine all over it. He said, "Um...it could probably be a little cleaner, but..." My rabbit now has urine scald, which is a horrible-looking situation where a rabbit's acidic urine has been in contact with their delicate skin too long and burnt away the fur and even the top layer of skin, leaving a raw, pink area. (I suspect the reason is her mild overweightness, which I'm working on, and her lack of being fully littertrained.) Thanks a LOT, Pet Samaritan. But that's not where it ends. A week after the exam, I had to go back for the urine scald. There are two good small animal vets nearby, North Portland Veterinary Hospital and Portland Animal Clinic, but the first was on vacation and I didn't know of the second. So back to Pet Samaritan I went, where I got up the guts to say to the doctor, "I'm going to be honest. When I brought my rabbit in a week ago, I asked you about the urine in her fur all around that area. You said it was fine. Now, a week later, she has urine scald. I feel that if you had been cautious and warned me at that time, maybe gotten her fur clipped and told me to start cleaning that area with a washcloth, I wouldn't be here right now and she wouldn't be all...urine-scalded. Thus I feel it would be unethical of you to charge me for this appointment." It makes sense to me. Especially if you're a doctor. But let's not forget that vets ARE doctors, and of course some are largely in it for the money. Anyway, he said, "I see what you're saying," and proceeded to BS like mad. He went on about it not being something he could have predicted and how her fur hadn't been like that before (had too), subtly insulted me by saying he can't do anything about how they're cared for at home, and slowly segued into rabbit care. As he went on, I finally interrupted. "So you're still charging me." "...Yep! Still charging you for the uh, appointment." Wow. Nice. I guess hiring a fourth receptionist was more important. Woah, wait! There's more! My rabbit had begun to have watery, somewhat cloudy eyes. He had no clue what was wrong. When I boarded my rabbits at Portland Animal Clinic this weekend, they identified it as entropion right away without even charging for an extra "exam" or anything. And it's a very uncomfortable condition where the eyelids fold inward and rub the eyes, and requires surgery or there could be serious consequences in the future. Thanks again, Pet Samaritan. With your help, my rabbit could live a short, painful life! So in conclusion: ELSEWHERE. Pick one of the two vets I mentioned above instead, please!!! My rabbit has an entirely avoidable condition now...this vet doesn't deserve the business it gets! read more

This review is for my cat. She is polydactyl, but still can't type. It's mostly because she is lazy. Hello. I'm a cat. Dr. Sue Erickson is my doctor. I don't go to see her more than once a year because I'm healthy. I also don't move. Moving is a good way to hurt yourself. Just stay put, that's what I say. Only move to play with things or eat roast beef. Do this occasionally. Mostly just sit still. Windows are nice for this. Also speak like Hemingway. Short, declarative sentences; that's the way. Ok, enough from her. She's insane don't listen. They've always been really nice to me here. Dr. Erickson is clearly an expert with cats, so I'd highly recommend her for that area. I've never had a bad experience with the attendants either, and generally they have been very kind and patient. Folks at the front desk were always courteous and kept me informed if I had to wait. read more

I've been taking my dog and my bird to Pet Samaritan for the past couple years, and they've been great. Maybe a bit on the pricey side, but they've done great work and they're pretty friendly people. I suppose with any business, if you only go once and catch them on the wrong day, you might come away with a bad impression...but I personally haven't seen this yet. Unlike some of the more snobby places around town, they don't also make me feel guilty if my boss makes me miss a vet appointment and I have to flake out on it (which happens quite often in my line of work, unfortunately). Thankfully, they also work some weekend hours. There aren't a lot of vets in town that are really experienced with either Shiba Inus and/or Conures. I've actually had a vet at the one other place I went look me in the eye and ask me if he was a Basinji. And when I brought up getting my very small hookbill's nails clipped, that vet instantly backed off...two good reasons to avoid the PetSmart/Banfield vets altogether, by the way. Dr. Voorhees has a good understanding of the Shiba breed and their quirks, and the PetSam nurse was able to take care of my bird's nails and primary wings pretty well. I guess the only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars is probably the price...it's worth it, but it is a little high compared to some of the other vets in town. But considering all that they do, it's cool. I also don't have a problem with their referral system...if it helps another poor sap avoid one of the sketchy pet store vets around town, then it's worth it. read more

Have you ever left the Vet feeling ripped off? Well its not a great feeling. I brought my very healthy Boston Terrier in because he ripped a nail. He does this all the time and I like the Vet to clean it up nice for him so it can heal. Its happened plenty of times, its no big deal. Well Pet Samaritan charged me 126$ to clean his nail? How can you justify this?Well they said its 55$ for the exam? I said what exam? You mean when the Vet looked in his ear and his mouth and said hes a very nice looking and healthy dog. 55$ for that? I didnt want a exam, all i wanted was for you to clean his nail up. Thats it! I have been to a emergency vet on a sunday because my regular vet was closed and they charged me less than this place. Very dissapointed, i wont be coming back here. read more

We had a very sick dog that we rescued. She needed an IV every day and steroids. Dr. Erickson was an angel. She would get us in to see immediately would always answer my questions over the phone and would call if she hadn't heard from me for a few days. Towards the end of my Clementines life the clinic donated to me her medications which was a great help. When the time came to have her put down Dr. Erickson explained how everything would happen and made it as peaceful as possible. I will never take my remaining dogs anywhere else as long as Dr. Erickson is at this clinic. read more

I've been taking my older cat here for two years, at first out of convenience but then because I found Dr Erickson who is absolutely wonderful. She has been his primary doctor and as my cat is relatively special needs in terms of his health, we see her a lot. The supporting staff have always been kind as well. Also: get the pet insurance. On the recommendation of a few friends, I took my older cat Blueberry here for a problem claw and some dermatological issues. I had heard that they do pro bono work for a no kill shelter with many elderly cats. They were not only able to see her that day, but also got her records transferred from her previous vet. Blueberry is an indoor only pet and is not at her best when going to the Doctor so I was nervous about how she would take to this experience. The location is very convenient. The waiting room is small and sparse and not the most comfortable and exam rooms and not fancy, but the staff was warm and welcoming and the service was my main concern. While waiting to see the vet, one of the Vets came out to talk to a woman who was distressed about her cat and she started to cry. The Vet was very compassionate and understanding and immediately invited her to the back to finish the conversation. It was a testament to their bedside manner. . During the initial exam, the tech was gentle, kind and caring in a less than ideal environment. She put me at ease even though Blue's behavior was less than stellar. The Vet was also great. I was able to feel comfortable that my old girl was in good hands. The tech stayed with us the whole time to act as a second set of hands on my nervous girl so I could just stay out of the way and be in Blue's sight line for comfort. They did a thorough exam, explained to me what the issues were, what they felt should be done and the options of how they could do it. They ended up taking her in the back to do the procedures so they could wrap her up in a towel and they were only gone a few minutes. They asked me before they did it. They fixed her claw up, trimmed all her nails, popped her kitty pimple (No joke!) and offered me a few different options for antibiotic administration and let me know the price differential upfront. All in all, she was in much better shape then I had feared and we are trying her on a new diet to see if we can get her skin issues under control that way before exploring more expensive options. Overall, my first experience there was great. Don't expect a fancy building with lots of bells and whistles, but do expect friendly, compassionate staff and a lot of seasoned experience.
