Upon arrival we were greeted by some peacocks and saw some emus! We then started in the natural history museum where there was every taxidermied creature imaginable! There were animals literally everywhere, as well as ancient artifacts. Then we were given lanterns went outside and entered the mammoth cave. It's about 40 degrees so we were glad we brought sweatshirts. The cave was huge and took about 30 minutes to get through, a really neat experience.

The museum guide was wonderful, she came out to the new building to check on us (it was a very hot day) and explained how the steam powered tractor operated. My husband was fascinated. Really great historical objects that have been lovingly preserved. I love visiting museums and this one is a jewel. I highly recommend visiting.

There was enough to keep us interested for a couple hours. Typical museum displays were supported by videos, some talking potatoes, even a cute Virtual Reality Tractor and some video games. After we went through the exhibits, we ended at the cafe and got a baked potato and some fries. You can have anything you want on them, so we got chili and cheese, sour cream, and bacon. The only sad part was that they were out of gnocchi. Lots of parking and there are some shops in the area. So, yes, we're really glad we went and recommend it if you're in the area.

Well, not this time! All jokes aside, this was a fun little wayside distraction, tucked away "in the back" of Blackfoot, but worth it for the kitsch and novelty of the whole thing. Our kids certainly loved it, particularly the potato family projection in the "basement" that narrates the harvesting and storing of potatoes; our three year old couldn't stop staring and laughing! In additions to displays, videos and dioramas detailing every potato fact you might ever want to know (and more), there's also a quaint little café at the back purveying all manner of potato products, from fries and other fried things, to the good ol' Irish Sundae (a baked 'tater dressed just how you like it), so you can get your carb load for the day in whatever form you desire! Admission is cheap (a few bucks per person), and a great way to kill some time, or break up the monotony of a road trip.

Small, but what do you expect for $5 adult admission ($1 for K-12)…read more The permanent exhibits are fossils and biological specimens from the area, including skeleton replicas of protoceratops, Utahraptor leg, sabertooth tiger, bison, etc. They also have anthropological pieces on the plains Indians (pottery, jewelry, arrows, etc). They had two special exhibits when I went. One was on the history of Native American service in the US military. The other exhibit, which I found most fascinating, was on Heliocoprion, a genus of extinct sharks with teeth in a buzzsaw pattern. Fossils of Helio species have been found from the Ural Mountains in Russia and across the Western US. Very, very cool.

On the third floor is a display of the SPACE AGE era in America (striving with Russia). It covered the subsequent 'rocket' designs of vacuum cleaners. I couldn't help it, I laughed out loud while reading it! :D What I found interesting ; -Elizabeth of Bavaria's traveling commode (and HOW it worked) -WWII field latrine -The daunting DUST Victorians faced, and the first vacuum invented (horse drawn) -the goofy statues made out of cleaning & vacuum cleaner parts -all the vintage advertising & appliances -the video on how to clean a bathroom in three minutes! We've travelled to half of the states and this is my single most favorite spot. It was only $10 to explore an insane amount of random items from all over the world and different eras. It's a bit dusty and so packed that you get distracted, but I could have spent the whole weekend looking at each and every thing. The cave is a short tour, nothing spectacular, but will cool you down in the summer heat. We've gone twice now and anytime I'm in Idaho, I'll go another time!
