History

The Historic Wilson Theatre opened in 1920 when Daniel Ward Wilson, a businessman from St. Louis, brought big-city elegance to Rupert, Idaho. Built for vaudeville and silent films, the 700-seat theatre featured ornate brickwork, arched windows, and cutting-edge technology for its time. After decades of use, the theatre fell into disrepair, and by the 1950s much of its beauty had been lost. In 1997, the Rupert Renaissance Initiative formed to save the Wilson from demolition. Led by local visionary Earl Corliss and architect Jerry Myers, the community raised nearly $2 million to restore the building to its original grandeur. Today, the Wilson stands proudly once again as a cultural hub for plays, concerts, and events of all kinds. Owned by the City of Rupert and managed by the nonprofit Renaissance Arts Center, the Wilson Theatre continues to unite the community through art, history, and the enduring power of local pride.
