Last Saturday, four of us went to see Kevin McDonald's "Superstar" at the Soho Playhouse. The show - a rock opera - was great and so funny! Dave Hill opened with a set beforehand. It was a 7pm show in the larger theater space (there's a smaller stage by the bar inside). Seats are first come, first serve. We came early (around 6:25pm) to wait in line outside, so we got seats up front in the third row. Heads up - with the theater lights on, it's hot in there. One of the performers (Janeane Garofolo as the obligatory rock opera narrator) even said something on stage about it (impromptu but a true statement). Another heads up - visually it won't be clear where to line up outside for entry and meet-and-greets. Keep your ears open for announcements from the hard working staff at SoHo Playhouse. They are friendly and informative, and cool peeps. If you're a history person, you'll enjoy visiting Soho Playhouse because it was the former estate of Aaron Burr, George Washington headquartered up in there for the Battle of Manhattan, Tammany Hall headquarters circa 1900s, and was a speakeasy during Prohibition. I'm looking forward to returning again for a local or international act/play/show. Great shows in a great room. The large theater is upstairs. The sightlines are good but there is not much legroom in the front row. The smaller room downstairs is very comfortable with a nice bar. The staff is friendly and helpful. read more

The Soho Playhouse is a small off Broadway Theatre with their own bar/lounge on the basement. Really cute theatre. A little run down, but the friendly and professional staff makes up for it. Tonight I saw "The Day I Became Black". One bi-racial man's heart-breaking journey of having to pick one race to identify as. What an eye-opening experience. Bill Posley was fantastic. He has the incredible gift of story-telling which makes you hang onto his every word. At times hilarious; at times heart-breaking; All the while, opening up your awareness of what it's like living as a bi-racial person. There is so much depth to his message. He will make you think about things you never thought about. Go see it!! Note to Trevor Noah: Have this incredibly talented young man on your show!! read more

A friend from Alabama bought tickets into town and I wanted to show her a bit of indie NY Theatre. So it was Dr. Jykelle and Mr. Hyde At the Soho playhouse. This independent theatre goes right in so many ways! Screw fixing the chairs that have splintered wood jutting out! They have an underground bar. Get lubricated before a show. And who needs spacious restrooms when you can cover the audience in a thick fog to fully immerse the audience in Mr. Hyde's world. All jokes aside, I really enjoyed this place. And I really enjoyed the show. I will be back again read more

Soho Playhouse is intimate with a very friendly staff. We saw a production of a one man show, A Christmas Carol performed by Guy Masterson, which was incredible! We sat in the second row. There were a few props, lightning, and sound used for his performance. He is a very talented actor and this is a show that should not be missed. It certainly puts you in the Christmas spirit. We were able to briefly talk with Masterson after his performance. He is lovely. You have the option of buying cds of this show or another one that he has performed on Broadway recently. If you like, he can sign them for you. Unfortunately, the theatre isn't wheel chair accessible, which is a shame. Something else to keep in mind the seats are cramped with barely any leg room and the bathroom, which is downstairs, is extremely tiny. We saw (and somewhat heard) TJ and Dave, the talented improv artists, last week. The full theater space had no amplification, and the guys spoke in lowish voices, while the pre-drunk crowd laughed over almost every punchline. So it was disappointing. read more

I've only been to the Huron Club space located in the basement. But if you're upstairs and need to use the restroom, we'd be jostling around each other to get to them. Since I'm already on the restrooms let me start there. Three tiny lavatories (I guess that's what you call a toilet in its own room) and a cramped sink area. There's extra toilet paper in the cabinet under the sink. Don't ask. The stairs are steep and not at all ADA friendly, which is why I felt a strong compulsion to carry one very frail-looking elderly lady up the stairs. The Huron Club looks kinda shoddy to be honest. But given that it used to be a speakeasy for the Tammany Hall crowd, the scuffed up bar and exposed vents in the low-hung ceiling are "vintage"... yeah, that'll work. But despite its looks and history, the audio/visuals and the lighting are very good. It instantly becomes intimate and cozy. There's a full-service working bar along most of the right side. Banquette seating along the left. The rest is a flexible combination of cafe tables and chairs. The theater staff are so on top of things, they will balance the table legs without having to be asked. The staff was excellent. At the end of the current show, they open the bar for service. You can order pretty much anything you'd find at an average bar. My friend and I got a little too comfortable with that and forgot that this isn't an actual bar and they would like to go home. But they never made us feel intrusive or rushed. Thanks guys! As far as this theater goes, beauty fades but character remains. And this place is steeped in character. read more

This happened before the curfew, I promise. No more gathering in NYC after this show. This event happened weeks ago. My friend invited me to see Jay Rayner a one-man show. Although I didn't know who the guy is, I said yes to my friend's invitation. It turned out he's a good critic. Perfect! Jay Rayner's from England, so he has an English accent and he used a lot of English jokes that I didn't get or understand 100%, but I enjoyed it. Anyway, Soho Playhouse is a small event venue that could accommodate maybe 50-100 audience. Before the start of the show, the organizer/host asked to check the bar downstairs. We did and we got some nice colorful drinks. Nice bartender by the way. When it was time to start the show they asked everyone to go upstairs. The show was interesting, very different. He talked about what would be his last meals on Earth, with a touch of jokes. He mentioned about some restaurants in England, and since many people from the audience came from England, they understood it and knew some of the mentioned restaurants. Unfortunately for me I just listened and looked at the images on the slide shows. Jay's show includes his presentations about his last meals, his experiences with restaurants, his meal guessing game, and Q&A with the audience. Bonjour and Konnichiwa My name is Keiki also known as ThePandaPhotographer I was at the SOHO Playhouse and I have to say, drinks are a very very limited selection. Not good choices in my professional travel experience. This is New York City so please think about a square foot per dollar in NYC, LOL. The bar area is small and seems the bartender is young and still needs some learning. "He screws up on drink". The bar is mostly a cocktail bar and I only like Sake and soju. IPA beer is a must and some Whiteclaws but they do not have any. Afterward, we were able to go upstairs for a small show, but something about neighbors and the noise. It was a Saturday night and I only stay for about 2 hours with some friends for a party at the Playhouse. I will not visit this place again for the drinks but will visit for shows or entertainment which I wasn't able to attend at this time. read more

Row/Roe in the box office is unclear, unprofessional, unfriendly and the whole box / Front of House experience is terrible.

I'd been seeing ads for the "Rap Guide to..." shows with Baba Brinkman for a while, and when shows have a good run it usually means they don't suck. This was a great experience! I didn't even know the Soho Playhouse existed before I came but it was a good place to check out. The venue is nothing fancy, but the show was excellent, unusual, and entertaining. Knocking a star off for the show starting about thirty minutes late. Everyone has to congregate in the bar before the show starts which is fine, but I wish we could have been seated a little earlier. I was impressed with the quality of the show and would like to return. Thank you for hosting affordable shows for the masses! read more

I get that perhaps this place is old...maybe historic? It seemed to have an old feel to it. I didn't spend much time....just came in and out, real fast, to see a comedy show. Not sure if they have multiple rooms/theatres (I seemed to see another set of stairs leading down somewhere??) Anyway, I saw a show that was in the room on the street level, directly beyond the front door and ticket window where you first enter. The acoustics are horrid insofar as.....the audience chatter before the show was deafening. Next, the seats. I'm petite, and I felt squashed in my seat, which was an AISLE seat by the way. Wow. A number of seats....all seats?...or at the very least MY seat, was slightly at an angle to the stage, so I had to twist ever so slightly to view the stage. Lastly, on a warm and very humid June night, there appeared to be No Air (no A/C?....no fans?). The air in the room was 'Dead'. Upon rushing out of the theatre after just one hour, I heard others making the same comment about the lack of air in the room. Not sure I'd rush back here to see a show?? read more

While most of the jokes in Robert Dubac's one man show "Book of Moron" are decidedly corny, the ideas he raises are smart, edgy, and thought-provoking. The concept of the show is that he has awoken from a coma with amnesia, leaving his mind a blank slate. His goal is to reconstruct his life and memory by doing a deep dive self excavation, which includes a search for the answer to "What is truth?" He calls on the voices in his head to debate politics, religion, sex and media. These inner voices (Reason, Common Sense, Inner Moron, Inner Child, Inner Asshole, and Scruples), opine about FOX News, vaccine hesitancy, cancel culture, reality TV, social media, and bull detecting, among other current topics. As the title suggests, the show is about the dumbing down of America. And though he tries at times to be equal opportunity offensive, he clearly sides with the SoHo audience who are, presumably, progressive thinkers. Should he happen to get tourists who thought they were seeing the Book of Mormon, they might just leave a bit confused and more enlightened. Originally directed by the comedian/writer/actor Garry Shandling (RIP), the 80-minute show will run through October 3. read more

A great venue for a theater event. It's not the fanciest but I actually came here to see a talk for an industry event. It was a little cold in the room but the seats were comfortable, I could see and it was no worse than some of the other theaters I've been to. It's definitely a more "underground" type theater. read more

The show we saw here ("side effects may include...") was poignant and well done. The theater itself is very conveniently located close to the holland tunnel and subway. Very affordable. Theater is intimate and everyone very friendly. The seats are ok but very close together, so be prepared to be a bit cramped. They advertise a place downstairs to gather and grab a drink before the show. It looks like it sometimes gets used down in the dark, damp and smelly basement, but it was only us and one other couple on this Saturday afternoon wondering if the show upstairs maybe began without us. First timer! Such a cute little playhouse. It could use a little fixing up but i actually like it, telling history for how long the building has been around and what it represents! We enjoyed the the burlesque play : Josephine Baker soo much. The actress was brillant! She captured and portrayed Josephine's life so well. No intermission but it wasn't needed at all. We arrived looking forward to watching theater, not being forced to wear pandemic costumes. Despite everyone who entered having full vaccination records, we were all forced to "dress up" in our pandemic constumes despite no City mask mandates. Virtually everyone pulled them down when the show started....but hey, when the lights flip on, mask back up because the show must go on! read more

This is a smalI, no-frills theater with interesting, non-traditional productions. I have seen several shows at this theater: Mindgame, Made in Heaven, The Irish Curse, and The Rap Guide to Evolution (playing currently). The shows were quite different from one another, but were all creative and entertaining. The lobby box office area is small with the 200-seat main theater upstairs and a bar/lounge with a small stage downstairs. The theater's seats are about equivalent to what you would find in a movie theater and are split down the middle with 12 seats in a row on each side of the aisle . Because the theater is intimate, you could get a good view from most seats, but more elevation with each successive row would be better. read more

I came here with eight out-of-town relatives to see the Improv show, "Flanagan's Wake." Pros: Hilarious performance; A drink is included in the price of admission for each person (not the other way around where you're forced to BUY a drink); If you're Irish or Catholic, you're pretty much guaranteed to laugh at this stuff (it's like the Irish equivalent of "Tony and Tina's Wedding"); Reasonable prices: I think we paid about $40 each, which allowed me to give everyone a NY show experience without big Broadway prices Cons: Small theatre. I didn't think this was that bad because it made it more intimate, but you will certainly become friends with your neighbor by the end of the show if you aren't already; Uncomfortable Improv Factor: Again, this is only a negative if this kind of thing weirds you out, but be forewarned that you will without a doubt be interacting directly with the performers. If this makes you uncomfortable, this show isn't your thing. Overall, I enjoyed my experience at the Soho Playhouse and would be happy to see another performance here! read more

I saw The Divine Sister and it was hilarious but sometimes cheesy. The actors/actresses are incredible performers in this holy comedy. Mother Superior/Charles Busch is especially funny with his dramatic facial expressions. Other actors/actresses are Julie Halston, Alison Fraser, Amy Rutberg, Jennifer Van Dyck and Jonathan Walker. Good show but the plot is somewhat ridiculous which makes it funny. It can also be somewhat offensive to Catholic people. I wasn't offended but they do mock the religion in many ways. Also saw The Complete Performer here. Letterman-Emmy-winning writer and comic, Ted Greenberg, cracks all entertainment genres in just under 53 minutes. For the show-stopping finale, he drives winning audience members home in a licensed yellow taxi. Outrageously funny and cleverly written. Audience participation and a mascot is involved and Ted Greenberg surprises the audience by exposing himself and his wee wee. Also saw The Irish Curse here. It's a hilarious play about five Irish men who thinks having a small penis is an Irish curse. Keeps you laughing from beginning to end. Different terms are used to describe a small penis like bottletop and others. Cleverly written and performed. Good view up front but seats can be tight and uncomfortable. read more

The theatre is both intimate and charming. Super historical off Broadway theatre. I felt like I was transported in time. Grabbed a drink before the show downstairs, and I'm pretty sure the downstairs Huron Club used to be a speakeasy, which just makes the experience really full of character. I saw an awesome show, Rap Guide to Climate Chaos, which was so refreshing in the theatre scene. A relevant and unique experience about something as important as global warming, but it was also funny too. Highly recommend. Small venue, with good acoustics and lighting. The main floor theater has stadium like seating (not as steep of course). It's pretty tight but everyone gets a good view of the stage. The stage isn't that big, and I think the dressing room may have been off to one side of it? Went to see the Rap Guide to Evolution and there were only two performers on stage and they had enough space up there. The ladies bathroom is tight as hell, but at least it was clean. Downstairs there is a bar and a smaller intimate room for performances. The minor missteps- their credit card machine wasn't working that night and we took shots out plastic cups... whatever. read more

I just viewed this interesting play and biography in Soho call "Bill W. and Dr. Bob" about the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous and how it all began. Very impressed by the screenplay and acting. The theater is like an old school movie theater with a small stage. Very vintage and comfortable feel and the staff were pleasant. I would surely return for another show. read more

Before I begin, let me offer some context: A number of years ago, I really enjoyed Broadway shows. It helped I was under 35, and could make use of various promos and offers, and with a little care and planning we would never pay anything approaching "list" price. Since then, and since I lost access to those discounts, I've turned my eye to smaller runs, and the off-off-broadway scene. I'll pay $20 to see anything (except the movie theater, but that's a whole other story). For my $20 I expect either a great show, or a great story, and so far I've not been disappointed. Today was no exception. $18 got me a second-row ticket to the FringeNYC Encore Series' Pulp Shakespeare (Pulp Fiction rewritten in the style of Shakespeare). The theater - as others have mentioned - is a bit compact. The line for the box office completely blocked the door and prevented ticketed patrons from entering. The seats are cramped (or maybe I'm just tall), and the elevation between them is such that I was guiltily glad to hear the couple arguing in the foyer afterwards about how they'd been told the wrong start time as very probably the only reason I had an unobstructed view was because of their absence. I saw the bar downstairs, but aside from looking in en route to the bathrooms I didn't take the time to enjoy it's charms. With a maximum capacity of 199 people, it's small, it's intimate, and the shows that'll play here will, as I most enjoy, either give you a great show, or a great story. Pulp Shakespeare falls solidly in the former. I hope to be back soon. read more

The Soho Playhouse is a downtown gem with all the charms of a pre-war apartment: great history and unique soul. It was reportedly home to NYC's political machine at the start of the 20th century and was a key launching pad for the work of American theater legends Edward Albee and Sam Shepard among others. Now you can see Ted Greenberg's The Complete Performer (comedy show by former Letterman writer with free cab ride home), Simon Lovell's Strange and Unusual Hobbies (magic from a well known con man) and new to the roster: Tom DiMenna: Who Loves You, Baby? Baby Wants Candy, the musical improv show that packs them in, has also had residencies there. And I also saw Charles Busch's The Divine Sister (hilarious). I've also seen many New York Fringe shows here -- some absolutely weird and brilliant dramas and comedy performances. The main theater is a little tight -- seating wise -- but it has an old world charm with great sight lines and intimacy. Downstairs is a full bar and cabaret space (The Huron Club). Everytime I visit the Soho Playhouse I feel like I've stepped into a space that bridges New York city's cultural past and future. read more

I went here for the Burlesque-A-Pades not long ago and I liked the old school vibe that this Playhouse has and it gives you a very different feel than if you go to one of those bigger modern theaters. The place is small which makes the show very intimate and it allows the shows to interact much more with the audience which is a big plus in my book. But in some instances the place was lacking, I know that they were trying to stay true to its originality but it was simply to hard to find your seat, numbers were missing on chairs so you did not know where you were to sit and it created a lot of confusion. The "I guess it is a bar" downstairs, does have some ok choices but very limited as it is not really a bar but just a place where you can buy some alcohol. So I would go here again if another good show would come along but I would not hang out in the bar area. read more

Last night I saw Josephine on opening night. I must say that it was fabulous. Tymisha Harris sings and dances beautifully. The music choices were very thoughtful and reflected the times both then and now. I highly recommend this show and the Soho Playhouse as I have seen many other performances there. The owner knows how to select a variety of shows that appeal to a wide range of theatre patrons. The prices are very reasonable especially before the first performance of the show. AWESOME place!! Very friendly and helpful staff. The play I saw there was" Bill W & Dr. Bob"...it was remarkable!!! I highly recommend going to see it!! The only complaint I do have is that the seats are REALLY tight, and the bathroom is also. But it was ok because I was too busy paying attention to the show!! What a talented cast!!!
