Like a young Meryl Streep. The theater we saw her production in was a fairly basic black box theater. It was very full the night we went. I think there are 3-4 rows level with the stage and these are not ideal. Because anything happening upstage and you're in the 3rd row, you can't see it. So, yes you could argue it's a staging issue but that's not the whole thing. Other than that fairly sparse affair. Clean. Seemed to be well managed.

Cheap entertainment, even cheaper beer. Really hard to find any fault with this place. If a band or artist you like is performing here, I'd definitely recommend making the trek to see them.. There's a Wheelchair accessible path. Saw Food and drinks vendors there, a BBQ stand on the other side. Row of portapotties along one side, with handwashing stations- most had no soap and towels. Great lighting and sound. As far as seating, right in front of the stage is an open area where people were picnicking/sitting but they would need to get up anyway or else be blocked by those standing. Unless you get a spot here, there are spaces between the bleachers and the sides of the stage. Not paved. The bleachers, accdg to the Central Park website, are not open to General admission, need to be a member. Close to 6 subway line (68th St-Hunter College) and 5th Ave buses.

The first thing…read moreI saw were the condoms readily available as I checked in, along with a useful pamphlet on How to Use a Condom (complete with drawings), both of which I hope to need someday. (Already, this was going well.) The theater itself is tiny, and without any amenities. The seats are just chairs lined up on risers. There is neither a concession stand, nor a bar. There IS a tiny little bathroom with a sign that says "No flushing during performance" (the theater is that small), but no sink to wash your hands. Which isn't a big deal for me because...well, look at me: proper hygiene isn't among my priorities. Despite all this (or perhaps because of it), I kind of love it. It's so unabashedly low-budget, and the performance was so brazenly ridiculous. Admittedly, I've only attended the one show at The Brick (so far), so I find it a bit hard to separate the venue from the performance. However, if Flying Snakes in 3D is any indication, this tiny little theater books thought-provoking, amusing, outlandish, avant-garde, FUN productions. They don't follow any rules, and there's something extremely enjoyable about seeing other people enjoy themselves so much on stage. Be warned: This isn't Broadway. Don't come in expecting any traditional sort of theater. I mean, I've never pelted performers with rubber snakes before. At least not during the performance, and at their behest. If you do take a chance on The Brick, as you should, I would just go in with an open mind, prepared to see a show unlike any you've seen previously. Which I think is a good thing.

Fantastic theater for under $25? You bet…read more You could spend $50-$150 on a Broadway show which has a 75% chance of being something you've already seen, poorly re-warmed and poorly performed. Or you could spend a fraction of that on some truly original work. An innovative, intelligent, small theater. The work produced here is amongst some of the most trend setting, edge cutting, and experimental to be found in NYC, the U.S., and the world at large. And even better, if you show up to one of the last shows on a Friday or Saturday night, there is almost guaranteed to be a friendly and lively after party thrown in the theater space itself, hosted by the cast and crew. Where else are you going to see my own drunkenly performed karaoke versions of Journey, full length theater pieces about text based adventure gaming, and burlesque numbers performed by gorgeous men and women dressed up as Seven of Nine from Star Trek and Doctor Manhattan respectively, all under one roof? This sort of thing is simply not being done anywhere else. Show up or run the risk of being left in the dust of theater history. A few notes on the space. It only seats in the range of 40-50, so purchase your tickets in advance. If a show is popular, it *will* sell out. If you'd like to be part of the onstage fun, sit in the front row. The performers are on the same level as the first row of seats, and are frequently pulled up into performances. If you're more of an onlooker, head toward the seats at the back.

This has a very special place in my heart…read more The theatre itself is a wonderful place to both perform and hear live music across the spectrum of folk music and jazz. It's run by excellent people and one my favorite venues in the city. Swing through on a Friday and definitely check their schedule for upcoming events. The Roots and Ruckus nights are a favorite as a bluegrass musician. The connected school is well-known in the community of musicians here, and for good reason. I have many friends that teach here and I can't speak highly enough of that quality instruction you will get if you decide to take a class. Jalopy is super solid with their instructor curation and you can find everything from large group classes to one on one private instruction. They also sell stringed instruments and supplies if you're so inclined!
