I'm pretty keen on not getting overcharged for things, but I also know "You get what you pay for" After getting several quotes for a window replacement (old window out, new vinyl window in) I decided to give Mallo Home Improvement a go. Their quote wasn't as low as quotes from unverifiable sources (ie craigslist or such), they were much lower than the big box stores, and a few local shops. The Service: Mallo is good about working with your schedule to make the initial measurements. They don't stock the windows, so there was a couple week wait between the time I contracted the work, and the time it was completed, but nothing too long. They did a quality install job, and I've since called them back to do another window (currently on order). They have a small but nice showroom, making me rest assured I am in good hands and not some fly by night operation. I haven't looked into kitchen / bath renos with them, but plan to get more quotes from them in the future. Look back here for updated reviews as they will probably be my go-to guys. They also sent me a $100 gift certificate in the mail for christmas, which isn't good for repairs, but can be used if purchasing materials. The work that was done seemed good - but looking at the photos, I can see how poor it was. Lots of missed areas. I had looked at the work briefly, from a distance, because he had promised to return and touch up anything that needed it. It's just a slap-and-dash job. Once I paid (in cash), a promised return to rectify any problems never happened. Important parts of the work are not finished, and my calls and messages are being ignored. Had an uneasy feeling when he showed up with nothing but a regular car. No crew, no drop cloths. The attached photos show just SOME of the way he left the job after taking my money. Also: I have filed a complaint with the NYS attorney generals' office. Storan undoubtedly thinks little old ladies aren't computer-savvy enough to find out personal information about people who defraud them. It would've been so easy to defuse this bomb, Jim.

At the time, the window size was bigger than what I had prior, and when he asked me how I like it, I said: It's bigger, I like it. What I had noticed after the job was complete and the dust settled.. he installed an Anderson window. It's over the kitchen sink, I had to drill 2 palm lifters myself, no idea how anyone opens an Anderson window. Its cheap and a tingy window when you tap on the glass. I hate that window. It's new construction and not easy to just swap it out with another. It's missing the upper grates in the window to match Every single window in the house. Why he didn't listen to the homeowner - who asked for a certain type of window (to match the rest of the house) .. is Beyond me. I honestly wished I never paid him for that window, he should have eaten the cost himself for that. It's been 10 yrs and I detest that window to this day. UGH

We contracted John to build an addition onto our 150 year-old house and to build a new detached…read moregarage. The work included three separate excavations and foundations and also included gutting and renovating an old kitchen. Prior to bringing John onboard, we worked with an architect to design all of the new construction and renovated space. Our architect had worked with John a number of times before so we thought we'd give him a shot at our job. John was easy to work with. His quote was detailed and allowed for us to make changes to better fit our budget. He was helpful with questions we had, like which materials were included and which we had to be responsible for (e.g. electrical, plumbing, insulation). Once we signed the paperwork, John quickly got things moving with the building permit and lining up subs, e.g. masons, and material deliveries. Throughout the project, there was steady progress nearly every day. We were never left wondering if someone was going to show up or not. John was good about communicating schedule updates. He brought in a helper when there was heavy work to do, like framing or installing windows and doors. Other times he worked solo, such as when doing interior trim work. He brought in subs (masons, roofers, drywallers) when it made sense to do so. He also handled a lot of the coordination of trades we were responsible for arranging, such as the sprayfoamers. He kept the work site clean and picked up at the end of each work day. It was a pleasure to see the detail in the work John did, particularly in two respects. First, he was very precise and paid close attention to dimensional accuracy. Things were square and plumb, and the fit of components like doors, windows, and especially trim work, were exceptional. Secondly, he built things strong! Where the building plans left room for interpretation, and where weird situations revealed themselves (not uncommon when marrying new construction to really old houses), John developed solutions that were clearly never going to fail and would last a lifetime. It was apparent that his approach to work was to build in quality and not take shortcuts that could compromise the end result for the customer. The lasting impression we have from working with John is he does very high quality work. He is straightforward to work with and he works very hard. He doesn't do things on the cheap and you get what you pay for with him. He's reliable and a pleasure to work with. We recommend him highly.
