The restaurant is downstairs from the hotel but looks out onto ground level, (phew). The interior walls are adorned with artwork that adds to the Parisian vibe their going for. The decor is pretty swish with a window box, leather clad seats and a long cushioned bench. The menu is proper French A La Carte so do not be asking for burgers and chips. The bistro offers Duck Confit, Braised Lamb Shank, Smoked Fish Platter.... i think you get the idea. As usual being a massive cheese fiend i went for the Baked Camembert with Truffle Oil (OMG) and Brie, Goats and Broccoli Rosti (OMG OMG). Both were absolutely fantastic. Great for a first date, not so great for small children. Its not as scarily priced as you might think with the most expensive main at £13 when i went. They also sometimeS do a mid week deal of 3 courses for £14.50, which cant be bad can it?

Housed in the the New Steine Hotel, it wouldn't be an obvious choice either but I'm lucky someone filled me in. The decor is very continental, with banquette seating, crisp linens and soft furnishings adding to the feeling of luxury. Ever the bargain hunter, I generally visit here during the week when you can enjoy a 2 course meal for £12.50, although at the weekends it is only an additional £4. For the quality of dishes they offer this is a remarkable price I might add. Inventive dishes like Skate Wing and Chorizo Salad or Duck Confit (on a bed of lentils and pancetta) are presented with flair and precision and the waiters sweep dishes and fill glasses with minimal disturbance. No wonder this bistro has won the AA Breakfast and Dinner Award for outstanding quality and service. Book now.

Its by no way cheap but if you want a special night out you won't find a better place within a large radius. The last time I ate there I had Confit of local cod, puy lentils, shallots in red wine for starters followed by Loin and pie of Balcombe Estate venison, cauliflower cheese, Maderia jus. Sounds nice doesn't it! A close friend of mine got married there recently and had such a beautiful day. The grounds are really charming and the whole place has such a lovely atmosphere. I was a chef for 10 years and having eaten here once (luckily someone treated me so i escaped the bill) i was mightily impressed by the menu and wines. Jeremy will usually be about for most chef's heading up the kitchen and this means that the quality is consistent. His wife Vera is of Scandinavian descent and you can see the influence of French, Italian, Spanish and Nordic cuisine in the menu. There are also a myriad of events and ways you can dine. There are Jazz nights on Monday which would be a cool way to dine at the restaurant and many multiple course'offer's. Whilst these aren't going to be cheap, you will get to experience the full range of a very professional chef plying his trade over a wide range of dishes. What you should really get excited about is the wine. Again, it will cost you but they source from some excellent continental vineyards directly and some of the bottles may really reinvent your understanding of wine. They offer pizzas for £3-5 and pastas for around £6, be careful though as they make their money by charging over the odds for really bad wine so avoid ordering alcohol if possible. They do student discount and set menu which reduced the price even more. The price and the Lanes location means its a great stop off for a quite while heading out for a shop or to the beach.

Luckily, The Forager was worth the long hike and the stupid blisters. There's a spacious beer garden in the back and plenty of seating in the main bar and back room for more chilly days. The staff are friendly and welcoming, the music is mellow and they have a tempting selection of great quality food and drink. I usually opt for the 8 year Havana Club Rum but since it was only mid-day, I settled for an Americano and a hallumi sandwich. Both arrived within 10 minutes and hit the spot p-e-r-f-e-c-t-l-y. At busier times, you might have to wait for a table but trust me, it's worth it. The food here is all local and organic and a small portion of it is foraged, hence the title. I'm aiming to go back in a few weeks to try one of their famous Sunday roasts. I'll just make sure I'm wearing sneakers next time!

Nothing here is cheap, but The Foragers is good enough that it deserves to be contemplated against some of the city's best eateries.
