I had my first visit at Alderwood Dentistry. I went to another practice for almost 40 years but he retired and it was time to find a new place. Everyone from receptionist, assistant, to Dr were all warm and welcoming. Danielle was funny which put me at ease and she was very attentive. I love this dental office! I have been coming to Alderwood Dentistry for 3 years now and they always take good care of me and my dental needs. Everyone is nice and welcoming and they are very gentle with performing any dental procedures. They tell you up front about costs so there are no surprises. I wanted to find a new dentist because my old dentist sold his practice, and I though this was the perfect time to find a dentist closer to my house. I wanted a female owned practice because I just have generally better experiences with female providers, and Yelp pointed me to Alderwood Dentistry with its exciting all 5-star reviews. To be fair, there were only 5 reviews, so may be I should have tempered my expectations. I hate that I am the first non-5-star review, but I feel like I need to make people aware of how potentially problematic this practice can be. Some neutral observations: the process for intake isn't as digital as I had experienced in other dental practices (everything is still paper), which is ok, since they are a small practice. The location is in a house tucked between office buildings but not in a commercial plaza, so it's easy to miss if you didn't realize this. I want to start with the good... everyone is very pleasant, I was able to get an appointment right away, unlike at my last dentist who was always booking 2 to 3 weeks out, and Dr. Lam seems to genuinely not want you to have a bad experience. However, they gave me a treatment plan that included 4 deep cleanings, which my insurance doesn't fully cover (I have pretty good dental insurance with Delta). Since I couldn't afford the several hundred dollars out of pocket cost because I had a number of large unexpected expenses that has put me in a precarious financial position, I asked if I can just have a regular cleaning, which is fully covered by my insurance. Dr. Lam refused. I was totally confused by this. She started to say that it would be malpractice to not insist on deep clean. Mal-practice? Isn't that a bit dramatic? Besides, she says - regular cleaning wouldn't do anything because the build up in deep in my gums - ok, yeah I get it that the optimal treatment is deep clean, but if that's not an option wouldn't having SOME cleaning be better than no cleaning?? I mean, if regular cleanings don't do anything why should any of us ever have our teeth cleaned, ever? Also if a regular cleaning is no better than doing nothing why would you recommend that I do them at a higher frequency than normal (after the deep cleaning). It's probably worth pausing right here and noting that while I have no experience as a dental provider, I do have a medical background (biomed researcher, EMT), I'm a trained scientist and engineer, I spent part of my career analyzing insurance data, and I run a complex disease research non-profit that includes the study oral microbiom. May be this is a case of knowing just enough to be dangerous, but everything she says sounds totally non-sensical. She even citing "insurance rules." NOTE: I checked with my previous dentist group and they weren't sure what she was talking about - I'm now scheduled for a regular cleaning with my favorite dental hygienist, Kat at Complete Dental. I am not an anxious person, but the more Dr. Lam tries to convince me that what she says makes sense, the more suspicious I felt about her, and the more anxious I got. I kept trying to tell her that I am not in a position to follow her treatment plan, but she kept on insisting that was the ONLY way. My growing suspicion and anxiety caused her to try to explain more, reiterating that she can't do a regular cleaning... telling me that I can spread out the sessions of deep clean... basically NOT LISTENING to me. Eventually I just said, I understand (I don't), thank you, I am going to go now. However, because she can tell I was getting super anxious, she wouldn't stop talking, I feel like I couldn't leave without being rude, I literally almost had a panic attack because I felt trapped. It took all I got to keep it together and when she finally paused, I got the #$%@ outta there. This is the worst dental experience I EVER had, but I'm not giving them a 1 star review because I do think Dr. Lam wasn't actually trying to give me a panic attack, eventhough that's basically what she did because she was rigid and doesn't listen. If you're looking for a dentist who has a nice demeanor and you aren't in the habit of question recommendations, this might be a fine practice for you, but personally, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. read more

I came in because I needed cleaning, they did all the X-rays etc. but they couldn't even give me what I needed which is cleaning. They scheduled me for another Appointment and I feel like they just want to milk my insurance and my pocket. Because they will do deep cleaning in the left side for my next appointment then the right side in another appointment. Cleaning is such a basic thing for a dental clinic but if they can't even do that, then why bother. I do want to say that the workers are very friendly, but I'm not sure if I'm going back here again! read more

I went to several dentist offices after college but I could never find a office and team that I really liked. After seeing Dr. Lam over a decade ago for the first time I was sold. She was and still is amazing. She has the perfect combination of personality, skill, and knowledge. I live over two hours away and still make the trek every 6 months to get my teeth cleaned and a checkup overall. Cavity free again today. Ha ha. I'm almost 42 and it's still a fun goal to shoot for. I don't like dentists. But who does am I right?! However, from the exterior to the building to the warm staff, Alderwood Dentistry makes me feel at ease. I was greeted warmly and was seated in my dental chair promptly which is especially welcomed during these COVID-19 times. Melyssa was very nice and took her time to ask me questions and walked me through the whole process as I had my standard cleaning and needed to do x-rays as well. Dr. Lam then came in and did the rest with the cleaning. She took her time to ask me how I've been as I recently took out my invisalign. What surprised me the most was how fast and efficient she was! After having multiple bad medical practice experiences, let's just say going to the dentist didn't seem like a good time to me. Despite that, I knew I had to take the necessary step to find my dentist. Dental care is so important to me and going to the dentist can be daunting. I did a search through a local mom's group and found Dr. Lam and her incredible practice. One positive review after another. The setting is peaceful and quiet. No waiting to be seen either by Dr. Lam's technician or Dr. Lam, as waiting can kick the nerve factor up a couple of notches. Dr. Lam and her amazing technician were so warm, so friendly and kind. They truly cared about me. They were both so knowledgeable and took so much time with me. Both answered all of my questions, giving me great tips and product advice (love that... the shelves at the stores are so over saturated. It's nice to know what is worth your hard earned coin), helping me to stay calm and dare I say... relaxed. I could have fallen asleep. Both Dr. Lam and her amazing technician had the most gentle touch, while being so incredibly thorough. My teeth are so smooth and are positively glistening. I left her practice truly happy.
