Outpost Natural Foods is a CO-OP grocery store that sells a large variety of specialty products and locally sourced produce, meats, and other grocery items. Super friendly and helpful staff. The big draw is the higher quality organic fruits and vegetables. Also, a good selection of high quality meats and seafood. The only downside is their prices are a bit higher than other grocery stores but it is a good trade off given a large selection of specialty items that are harder to find in other stores, including, Fresh Thyme, and Whole Foods. Plenty of parking and quick in and out for the most part. Outpost Natural Food has become a regular stop for the wife and I when looking for organic produce. -- If you have not been to Outpost before, you should definitely check it out. Really love this location!! It's got plenty of parking, always a clean store and has beautiful looking produce!! The staff are super helpful, especially when you need to weigh jars for the bulk section. Their bulk section is amazing and I usually head to an Outpost location for that. I appreciate not having to buy things like rice and beans in plastic packaging and reusing my clean glass jars. I've heard great things about the Mexican chocolate cupcakes so I'll have to check those out next time. Don't forget to check their weekly flyer for some great deals. read more

Outpost is a good organic grocery store. I like that they feature a lot of unique local items, produce, and prepared foods. I really enjoyed the Cornish chicken baked pastry. It reminded me of an empanada with a hearty meat/potatoes flair. Their curry chicken salad is also pretty good. As far as groceries, Outpost has a a lot of items that I haven't seen at Whole Foods or the chain stores. It's definitely worth a stop just to check out that assortment. If you want quality organic produce this is a great choice. Bulk items, Tea, Coffee all have great selections. Their bakery has a delicious scone every day that I often get with my shopping. There are other locations around MKE so you'll often be near one of these groceries. The people there are very nice and helpful. It feels like a discount Whole Foods inside. We ended up going so often we became members but have yet to really see much benefit from their member deals. It does feel good though to support smaller grocers. read more

I do love Outpost! I love that they are local, carry Bunny's Bites GF/Vegan bakery, the bulk section, and organic/just plain good food options!! However, it doesn't seem to matter the location, time or day, the cafe hours are spotty. DO NOT BELIEVE POSTED CAFE HOURS. I love their turkey goat fig sandwich and at every opportunity, I try to order with their GF flatbread. But for the past five years, I've walked into the store and more often than not, the cafe is closed or not doing "special orders" so no GF option for me. If the cafe can't be open during posted hours, the posted hours need to change. Similar to the Wauwatosa location, they offer a plethora of healthy goods! From organic locally produced produce to health/beauty products. I recommend trying out their sushi and salads. Great place to get to go food since they have prepared food. Be mindful of the checkout line and waiting for food/smoothi, it's a hit or miss whether you'll check out quick or will take you 10 minutes longer than you expect. I would rate this place 5 stars if it had a more consistent checkout line wait. Their price range is a little higher than your normal Pick 'n Save/Cermak/Woodman's since you're paying for good quality produce. 2018 Updating review: the slow service is consistent. COVID Review: Every shopper and nearly every employee was wearing a mask, which is awesome! They also have an employee wiping down carts between customer use. This employee was the only one who wasn't following mask-wearing protocol (his buff was around his neck when we had to pass him to exit the building). There is plexiglass between the cashiers and customers. Business Review: If you want a selection of local brews, sodas, ice creams, coffees, and such, this is a good place to stop in to build a Wisconsin sample pack. Outpost has a good selection of local foods and fresh produce and meats. The chicken we cooked up for dinner was so good! We particularly liked that they carry Scratch ice cream. Like many co-ops, in addition to the quality foods and beverages, they also had some sustainably-minded every day products, like silk floss in a completely recyclable dispenser and multiple oils. While I shop at this store fairly frequently being a veg head, it definitely is not someplace I necessarily enjoy going to. Definitely do not appreciate the tree hugging, self righteous attitude so many of the cashiers prominently display. Instead of being so uppity and uninterested in anything, maybe you could be bothered to actually bag the $300+ of groceries in my cart instead of crushing everything by just piling and piling and piling everything on top of one another. I have never reviewed a grocery store, but in reading some of the negative comments I had to respond for a different view point. I have been coming here for over 10 years and honestly have never had a rude employee. My experience has always been fantastic. The butcher can make recommendations especially when they carry several organic vendors. I had to change my thanksgiving turkey breast order 2 days before and was accommodated without question. Great breakfast, lunch and dinner! Nice selection of teas and coffees. Terrific desserts, red velvet cake, coconut, apple pie, cookies... Nice selection of wine and local beers. One of the best places that vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters to enjoy a meal with a variety of delicious options my personal favorite is the chicken burrito with chips and salsa. Speaking of salsa they have some of the best on the East side mild, medium and hot at great prices. You can also usually find local cheese, deli meats and produce. The sub sandwiches are good. I like the French picnic sub. I've gotten a few that did not seem as fresh as they should be, but usually they're great. Outpost can be expensive but the subs are reasonable, around $7 something. The subs are pre-made and ready to enjoy. read more

The Dairy and Meat are just better from Outpost, hands down! The bulk section has amazing grain selections. Those hard to find natural and organic products are here and I can't get through the store without grabbing one of their signature salads from the deli case. The Staff always greet me and are helpful when I'm looking for something specific. They tell me what's super-fresh and I'm never dissapointed. The in-season bins at the entry are worth stopping for too. High prices are balanced by frequent surprising low sales on other items. Sometimes I like to travel between the different Outpost locations, including Mequon. This one is an easy bike off the Interurban/Oak Leaf trail, if you make an afternoon of it. The cafe is one of the highlights for me. They have several beers, ciders and even kombucha on tap. Have a seat and enjoy a fresh salad, sandwich or even a pizza - hot from the wood oven. Unlike the Silver Spring location, Mequon has a butcher counter. They also have an impressive selection of coffee and tea to choose from. They do not seem to have as large of a selection of beer and wine as the other Outpost locations, but the choices they do have are solid staples. Fun Fact: I love the gift selections here; whether books, jewelry or soap. My earrings and earmuffs from Outpost fetch some of the most compliments when out and about! read more

Cool stores; reminds me of the French, in many ways... Outpōst is a place I trust for truly authentic organic foods. Some things are a little pricey but that's ok for me; after hearing whats been going on with organics at pic n' save and Sendiks (shame on them)... it's peace of mind I'm paying for at the Outpōst. Their selection of vitamins is wonderfully plentiful and custom orders are never dismissed. The staff working the vitamin department are certainly educated and experts in their field because they're extremely knowledgeable. Holy wow. I had THE BEST tofu sanguich possibly in my life today. (5/5 stars, but to go with contemporary colloquialisms,) 10/10 would buy again. I ordered a turkey club with bacon for a coworker and it looked freakin' TASTY. Being that I've recently given up the meat and meat byproducts though, I opted for Joey's Famous Tofu Steak Sandwich with caramlized onions and veganaise on ciabatta. Hot shit! Not spice-wise, just in terms of goodness. Like, when you talk with a friend about a thing they enjoy and they say something like, "Yeah, that's the hot shit, right there." Like that. Anyway, super cool co-op. They've got all the natural/organic/humanely farmed/fair trade stuff your crunchy-hippy-ass desires. Local cheeses! (It IS Wisconsin...) and a sweet little deli/coffee bar. They've got wholesome smoothies, too, in which I did partake. Strawberry Supreme. It was delectable. Really nice folks all over in there too. Not just the employees, the customers seemed... let me put it this way: where 0 is 'shithead from the WholeFoods parking lot,' and 10 would be 'omniscient narrator of my life story,' the people I encountered were somewhere near 7s. All happy to be there, shopping, and not total turds with their shopping carts. Which, for a passerthrough such as I am, is some kind of comfort that I don't know if I can explicate. Its quite awesome if I do say so myself. We love it and are so happy its close to home. Buying organic or locally sourced doesn't have to be more expensive. Having said that, getting in the right mind set that spending 25% more on healthy food with no pesticides going into your body should be completely worth it. Its like $20 more on the grocery bill, which is a drop in the bucket compared to how much we as a society spend on meals out or "odds and ends". Love it! read more

I have been going to OUTPOST for years and enjoyed every moment. Since they had a health dept scare in other Outpost stores this one has gone down the tubes. There home made salads are minimal. Employees are scarce. Some of the shelves have substitute products as in the bakery as well. The bakery items are from other places. The atmosphere is very subdued. Wow - what a great addition to the area. I've been working by this location for several years and have been living nearby for the last couple. This store is a huge addition to the grocery store and fresh food scene in the area. I've been here a handful of times lately and all of my colleagues visit here frequently for lunch now. I've shopped a few times and then ordered from the cafe. There are bike racks to lock up your bike, electric car charging station, bistro tables to sit outside, and raised garden beds just all on the outside. Once you walk in your are greeted by the welcome counter and start off by the hot food section where you can sit down and eat. The store is huge compared to their other locations yet is considerably smaller than your national or regional chain stores. You walk through the produce section first that leads you back to the dairy and meat department at the back of the store. The staff here is super helpful when it comes to finding something, asking for recommendations, and just overall friendly and easy to talk with. I ended up joining since they were doing a promotion to become a member and happy I did. The bulk section has tons of stuff that you can get on the cheap so definitely check that out. They have a beauty section, a performance (supplements, etc.) section, and a book with gardening sections. Yes, you'll pay more than at a big box store yet this is locally grown, organic food that is supporting the local economy so it is well worth it. If you're here during the lunch hour, you have a 50% chance of finding me eating my favorite sandwich in all of Milwaukee - mozzarella tomato. They slather it in this pesto that is out of this world good. You want it heated up - trust me on this. The cheese gets barely melty and makes it just messy enough to be fun. In addition to your mozz tomato sandwich, you need to order a small kale kiwi apple juice. Now I know that just sounds way too healthy and you don't think it will taste good. TRUST ME. Order it. It's the same price as your morning starbucks and is a million times better for you. They juice things better than other natural food stores in the area. No grit - no leftover vegetable bits - just yummy juice. To make sure this lunch isn't TOO healthy, in the refrigerated section where you order your sandwich, track down their little oatie cookie sandwich. It's two homemade oatmeal cookies with a cream cheese filling. Sometimes you can even find them with a raspberry filling. If they have the raspberry filled one, get that one. SO YUM. read more

One of four locations, the Mequon store is about the size of a Walgreen's but packs a lot in to a small area. The selection covers just about everything you could expect to find for your regular shopping trip, though you won't see many familiar brands in here. It's nice to see some alternative shelf items with more local signage and descriptions that advertise products with a purpose. Much of what you find here is recycled packaging, fair trade and sustainably grown and harvested. The appearance of the store is well kept, though this is also to be expected since the building itself is just over a year old. It's also a testament that there are always cars in the parking lot, even though the location is a ways down from the main Mequon business hub. The service is generally very good, though the café is liable to leave you waiting if you show up in the middle of lunch or dinner and expect to be the only one with that idea. It's a busy place, and while the food is worth the wait, you should also be ready to hang out for a minute. It's definitely not fast food for your watch or your wallet. I do enjoy shopping here, and it's easy to get lost even in the small building thanks to the variety of interesting goodies along the shelves. It's definitely worth it to keep an eye out for employees in case you have questions. (Wait, this jerky is buffalo meat? Why is there snot in my kombucha? What on earth is that and how do I cook it?) I would have rated but decided to compensate since unfortunately some disgruntled employees decided to take out unrelated grudges here. It's Outpost; a small grocery store specializing in natural, organic, gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan products. I don't shop here often because, let's face it, it's expensive. However, as an individual that's lactose intolerant, this store has, by far, the best selection of dairy-free foods. I love trying new recipes, and that's what usually lands me at Outpost. The store, itself, is small compared to your mainstream supermarkets like Pick N Save and Woodman's. Thus, the dairy section is pretty small too. You really have to keep your eyes open because it's easy to walk right past what you're looking for. That's what happened to me. Luckily, a very nice, little gentleman in a cowboy hat came out from behind the meat counter. He had spotted me walking in circles, so he asked if there was something he could help me find. I told him I was looking for dairy-free chocolate pudding, dairy-free cream cheese and dairy-free sour cream. "The pudding is over here", he said as he walked me over to the cooler. "The cream cheese is over here, and the sour cream is over here." Thank you so much! I might've been circling that dairy case for hours had it not been for his help. There was another customer by the dairy-free sour cream. She struck up some brief small talk. "Have you used this before? It's excellent! It's so great, especially in dips!" Wow, thanks. SAVE MONEY! Watch out for Scams. Let's start with lousy and incompetent service, which is standard at all these scam store locations. The horrible service should be enough reason to save your money and not shop at The Outpost, but the whole "natural" and "organic" marketing ploy is another reason to save your money. By definition of the word organic that can only mean something that grows out of ground naturally. The only thing that counts as organic in these stores is their sickly looking produce, that is either sprayed with a ton of pesticides because it's not made to keep pests away or it has been comprised by pests. There is no such thing as organic cornflakes or organic chips, that is processed food. There is no organic soda. If they say it has sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup you should know that sugar is just as harmful as the corn syrup. These are facts not opinions. If you are buying anything but their average, and often times pesticide soaked, produce you are paying 5 times more for the same processed garbage you can buy at Pick n Save or Aldi. I normally LOVE outpost. Their hot bar and juices are the bomb! This was my first time at the Mequon location and my experience tonight was sad. At around 4:40 my boyfriend and I went in for some juice and a pizza. We arrived at the counter and their were two employees back there. A man making juices and a women making a pizza. We were ignored for a few minutes but finally the lady making the pizza acknowledged us and said she'll be right with us. A few minutes after the guy came over and took our order, we ordered our juice and we said we wanted to order pizza on a separate tab. After he took our juice order he walked away. We stood there a few more minutes, and the lady came over and took our pizza order. She struggled to answer our questions and to ring it in. She was very nice though so I was not upset with her. However, i am questioning outposts employee training. After a half hour we still had no juice. (They were not busy) I saw another worker lady come into the area. I kindly explained I had been waiting a half hour for my juice and she said "I just got back, I don't know" what the heck? How about "I'm so sorry you've been waiting I'll check on that" her attitude was so unacceptable. After we finally got our juices and pizza it was all very tasty. I really am disappointed in the Competency of their employees. This isn't Walmart. Outpost is suppose to be a higher end store. Employees need improvement at this location. This is the only place to go for trustworthy, fresh, and of course organic food. I have been only impressed with their selections and awareness of the food climate. Outpost does the hard work for you by having standards, which is missing from all other commercial and corporate owned grocery operations. Besides this, they make it easy to give back to our community right here, local southeastern Wisconsin with simple options to buy a gallon of milk or a bag of food.
