This was the closest Aldi grocery store to where we had eaten lunch. I'd read about a few new things at Trader Joe's supermarket and since Aldi's owns Trader Joe's, I wondered if they carried a copycat version. Unfortunately, we didn't find anything similar, but we did take the opportunity to browse the shelves and get in some steps. As in most of these stores, it was fairly neat with each section having only a limited number of items. But if you don't care about a particular brand name or ingredients (do read all the labels/lists), then you can save some money on a number of items. They had some mandarin oranges on sale -- which we saw later for $2 more at another store -- so we bought some of those. And a few other impulse items to try. Having shopped other Aldi stores, we know that if you see something here that you want, you need to buy it right away. You may never see the same item again either at the same store or at other stores. Check out was fast as we didn't have that many items. And the cashiers are "graded" on how fast they can scan everything and place it in a cart, so its faster than you even might want. Think of Aldi's as the estranged brother of Trader Joe's. The abbreviated history is that Aldi's and Trader Joe's were owned by German brother's who fell out over whether or not to sell cigarettes. One headed the chain that became Aldi's and the other chain became Trader Joe's. While Trader Joe's has great prices, Aldi will beat them and just about everyone else's prices every time. You can still signs of that German heritage all over Aldi's like the German roasted coffee they sell. If you want to save money on groceries Aldi's is a great way to do it. In order to bring you those low prices Aldi's has instituted some cost cutting measures. If you want a cart you will need to bring a quarter and to get your money back you need to return your cart from the parking lot back to the store saving employees from having to collect the carts. You will also have to bring your own bags or pay for theirs. Lines will most likely be long because they keep their staff to a bare bones minimum. Best of all is the check out. To get people through the line more quickly they will literally throw your groceries into the cart they keep chained at the check out. You will frantically try to grab your items out but will never be fast enough. After enough visits to Aldi I am getting better at handling the checkout process. I have started to become addicted to Aldi's having joined several Facebook groups like Aldi's Nerds and a Aldi's recipe group (thanks Rachel). Since items vary from store to store I have started to check out different ones when come upon them. This store I had a load of the Halloween items I was looking for. I was able to pick up the Halloween three wick candles for $5. My favorite scent was the Witches Brew. I also purchased some skeleton mugs, the Happy Halloween Sweet Bloody red wine, skeleton pajamas for my daughter, Halloween socks, and monster cookie mix. So many fun items and inexpensive too in addition to the groceries. Like all good things at Aldi's grab it when you see it because it likely won't be there when you go back. read more

I'm very impressed with this place. It's a bit different than most markets, but that's also part of what makes it so great. First, there aren't a bunch of shopping carts littering the parking lot. You have to pay $0.25 (a quarter) for the shopping cart. When you return the cart, you get your quarter back (which sounds like football, but it isn't). So the parking lot is pretty nice. Inside, it's different. Much of the products are still in packing boxes. But the best part are the prices. Most of the items I purchased were considerably lower than what I have been buying right down the street. I couldn't believe it. So far, everything I have purchased has been great. The brands aren't always the major labels (although some are), but I have not found any fault with any of them. They don't use shopping bags so you have to bring your own. This particular Aldi is organized and there are always associates restocking and organizing shelves. All cashiers are super fast. I cannot keep up with them! I have been an Aldi's shopper for many years and will continue to be for years to come. Aldi's is like the Spirit Airlines of grocery stores. Want a cart? That'll be a quarter. Plastic bag when you check out? Ten cents each. It's not a huge deal. Plan accordingly. Bring your own bags to save yourself the headache of figuring out how many bags you may or may not need or be like me and buy some but never buy enough. The store is not huge so it's easy to get in and out rather quickly. They have a pretty big wine selection for a discount grocery store. I have never had a problem with any of their ground meat, poultry or produce. And it's just cheaper than the competitors. The lines can be long but once they get in a rhythm they begin to pick up. I frequent Aldi on McNab and University due to its low prices and location. The products are similar to those in Publix, but in generic form. As someone who once shopped at Publix, I would always chuckle whenever I would purchase a chart of groceries at Aldi then at Publix. The cost at Publix was about double to that of Aldi. Yet, understand you are paying for the higher level of service; such as, someone bagging your groceries, the brightly lite aisles, and the brand name products. After all I've heard about this place, I'll start by saying, I'm not a fan. Let's start with the hours. I arrived at 8:40 on a Friday morning and the doors are locked. They sell items in their own name as well as name brand items. The store is usually spotless but the lines can be long since they don't have many employees. And on the weekends, be aware there's usually a wait to get inside. This Aldi is located on the Northeast Corner of University and McNab. If you have never been to an Aldi before YOU ARE MISSING OUT!! They have all types of organic products, gluten free products, fresh meat, dairy, etc, yet they have no ads but put the value into their costs. You will shave at least 1/3rd off of your grocery bill. Now mind you it is smaller so they tend to limit to their audience and the size of the location. Some of the products are generic brand and guess what?! $2 wine - all types! Let me say this...this place is Trader Joe's dump bin repackaged with Aldi's brand. I got such a weird vibe there I wouldn't even swipe my card and paid cash. From the vagrants outside, to the SUPER WEIRD clientele inside, to the bizarro cashier who put our stuff in someone else's cart and kicked that woman out of her cart (we had our own cart) its not a location I would recommend nor return to. Granted their location dictates who shops there but in comparison to the Cooper City and Deerfield Beach locations, it sucked! Here's the scoop. Aldi is a European owned brand. Mr Nord, the owner also owns Trader Joes. Many of their practices are from European grocery stores. Not being able to use credit/debit cards is one, using a coin to obtain a cart is a second and I do believe the bring your own bags is also European. No, this isn't Target, Walmart or Trader Joes. They have a house brand just like other big grocery stores, sometimes even produced along side name brand items. If you look at the candy and chocolate selections, some are from Belgium and Germany. Imported, with higher cocoa butter percentages than our American brands. Last year, I got some beautiful chocolate Santa's, from Aldi. It was gifts for teachers at school after I attached gift cards to other places on them. Their store layout is like Sam's. Items on pallets..etc..No fancy smancy, that equals lower prices. Just like the advertising. So it keeps costs down. I'm not saying make your holiday dinner with everything from this store, use good judgement. Baking supplies here are a-mazing. Well, this was my second time trying this store in Tamarac. The first time I went I was standing in an aisle and someone knocked over juice which splashed on my feet. When I politely complained to an employee, all she did was give me a dirty look! Needless to say, I walked out and vowed to never go back. Ok, so here it was about 2 yrs later and I decided to try again. I didn't mind putting a quarter into the basket slot to get a shopping cart; this does keep the parking lot clean. I bought many different items and I must say the quality was good. It was actually nice to try new (to me) brands. What turned me off was the lack of service. Ok, it's not Publix but there was no one around to ask questions. Also upon check out, I had brought my own bags, but the cashier just kept quickly putting things in cart so I couldn't keep up. Had to bag everything at my car....that's not for me! The cashier wasn't at all friendly even after I tried to make a friendly comment. I am now on the fence about going back. I grew up with this brand & loving that it's here!! We have them in France, Germany and Illinois and Iowa. A lot of their foods are grown and packed for distribution in Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa. Simply, No Coupons. Cash, Debit, EBT only. You can buy gift certificates. I'm not sure if they take checks. Definitely no credit cards. Bring a quarter for the cart. You get it back when you bring the cart back. Save $$ by not having to hire buggy busters. No carts in the parking lot to bang up cars. Bring your own bags. This day and age, that just makes sense. Oftentimes, they have packing boxes available. They have their own line of Gluten Free foods and it's huge. They also have a line of Vegan foods that's also huge. Many of their "shelf" foods are in glass jars, not cans. They follow EU standards as far as preservatives and NO GMO's. I like the Almond Windmill cookies we used to eat as kids. A gallon of milk $2.89 and a doz egg $1.69 is perfect. They close at 9pm, but that adds to keeping overhead down. Also, you wont get any of these slower than slow cashiers. When they are logged into the system, they are required to scan the equivalent of 1000 items per hour. Their pay isnt based on it, but their employment is based on being productive and not lollygagging about. If you see a long line, dont fret, it'll be thru in short order. Aldi's is great if they have what you want. They don't have a huge selection but what they do have is priced great. The store is big but not big so it tends to get crowded during the busiest times. They have a lot of frozen foods, a refrigerated foods section, not to mention produce. There's only a hand full of registers so don't be in a rush. read more
