CITY SLICKER I have…read moredriven by here many times but i have never stopped. Recently I needed zucchini. We were having company over and I wanted to add grilled zucchini to the menu. When I stopped in I was amazed at the large selection of items they had. They also had a bunch of great looking zucchini. The normal price for them was $1.29 a pound but they were on special for 75 cents a pound. I grabbed 3 nice size ones and the total price was $1.83. Now that was a deal. I should have grabbed more. I was also able to meet the owner Chris. She was very friendly and helpful. She actually stopped in to drop off more zucchini. She was also there to see how the store was doing. We also started talking about cooking food and using fresh veggies. As she was talking to me she was looking through the peppers. She picked up two giant green peppers that were going bad and asked me if I could do something with them. I told her Yeah and she gave them to me. In fact, I took them home and roasted them on the fire pit. I also served them to our guests later that day and they loved them. In fact, the guests used them on there brats. I know roasted peppers are not a traditional topping but I must admit they tasted fantastic on the brats. Thanks Chris for giving me these and adding to our already delicious menu. This store is seasonal. I am not sure when they close down but I'm sure when it starts to get cold. I also learned that Chris is the daughter of the famous Jerry Smith who has the farm North of this location. So all of there fresh seasonal veggies come from there. Jerry Smith's farm has a great pumpkin patch for the kids to visit in October. If you haven't been there then I recommend you load up the Family and make a trip there. They also have a Corn Festival coming up in August too. Those events take place at the Jerry Smith Farm and not here. I also have a Yelp Review posted for that location. Okay back to Green Acres. The selection was huge. They had a variety of potatoes and onions, Roma tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, regular tomatoes, 4 foot tall Dill, corn, hot peppers, green peppers, pickles, watermelon and zucchini. Everything looked amazing. In addition to the fresh vegetables this location also carried flats of flowers too. I really wanted the palm tree for $330.00 It looks so cool plus I would always feel like I'm on vacation if I owned it. So if you are driving down the road and you see a little shack at the side of the road it's Green Acres. It is the place to be. It's like farm living which is the life for me. Yeah I may get allergic from the smell of hay. I do love the country but I also love my big city too. There are some song lyrics mixed in there above...enjoy!!! See Green Acres makes me want to break out in song. I'm happy that people seem to be getting healthier. Places like this are helping us move in the right direction. We need to learn how to make food again and not out of a box but from scratch. It is not only rewarding to do this but it tastes amazing. So I appreciate Green Acres and I can not wait to stop back.

The farmer has funds to invest in products and their operations directly versus purchasing from a store which would take a cut prior to passing along to the farmer. I was first introduced to Rubicon River Farm at the Urban Ecology Center's annual CSA event which allows you to meet the farmers and understand how each chooses to run their business. Their shares sold out before I could sign up in 2012 but I signed up early and took part in the 2013 season. I chose a bi-weekly, single share which fits with my household size and lifestyle at the moment. I receive bags of fresh salad mix, assorted vegetables, some bulk items such as raw sunflower kernels and brewer's yeast and even potted fresh herbs to grow on my porch throughout the season. One of my favorites is garlic and garlic scapes (the green ends of the garlic) and Swiss chard. They are both great in quiche. I'm looking forward to the other bounties of the season, including fall as well. One thing that I feel sets Rubicon River Farm apart from other farms is the communication and involvement with the shareholders. Each week there is an online newsletter which discusses the items, teaches you more about the ways to prepare and sometimes the history. For some, the items may be outside of the normal grocery purchases but it is a great adventure. The owner also arranges special events, like organic strawberry picking at the farm. There is also an option to assist at the farm to be involved in the process. This can also be a device to supplement your share cost. Families can also visit with their children to show them where food REALLY comes from. There are a variety of delivery options, including delivery to your home or business. It is very convenient for folks who may work or travel frequently. The farm is also open for onsite vegetable and egg sales for those who want a little bit more or just want to check things out. I am more than pleased with the way this CSA program is operated and what I receive. I often recommend Rubicon River Farm to my friends and family - not to mention share some of the treats I prepare from my bounty.

This CSA has a great variety of vegetables and fruits. They partner with other organic farms or local orchards to deliver their customers more variety. They even have eggs, meat, dairy, honey and jams. I would pick up my shares at the Grayslake farm every Thursdays and that was always a time I looked forward to. Always friendly staff, helpful weekly emails that would tell you what was in your share and recipes to use them. I had to move out of state a few months ago and this CSA is one of the thing I miss the most.
