I had a gum graft with Dr. Temlock in May 2017 - the first of what will be several more due to recession on other teeth. I was uneasy about the procedure going in, but he and his staff have been amazing (including Shirley who has been phenomenal at communicating follow-ups, next steps, checking in, and coordinating with insurance). The procedure itself is the worst and I wish it on no one...but if you are in the position to require a graft, I cannot recommend Dr. Temlock and his team enough. Excellent bedside manners, very trustworthy and demonstrated expertise in the field. It helps that I have also had great results from the first procedure. You hope for quality and expertise when investing in any medical service - which is without question at this office. The bonus is when the people are also very personable, friendly and fun to talk to. No awkward conversations and genuinely engaged. read more

What a lifesaver! I fractured my tooth on my crusty Italian sandwich roll at lunch, ugh, and Dr. Temlock's office got me in after hours to take a look and do an extraction, the same day! (Most places weren't going to be able to see me for a week!) I have never had to get a tooth taken out, and was obviously nervous and upset about it, but he was so incredibly kind and caring that I knew I was in the best hands. The procedure went remarkably well, and it was much less traumatizing than I expected. I healed up well, too--I appreciated how his team continued to check up on me. You have nothing to worry about when going here. Everyone was excellent at their jobs, responsive and friendly. I got an implant done at the beginning of this year with Dr. Temlock. The implant has been a journey (it got infected the first time I did it at a different office). Dr Temlock assessed the situation and assured me that everything was going to go smoothly. I came in a few weeks later, got the implant put in within 45 minutes and biked back to work. Got a check-up a month later - everything was healing great. Just went back in today for a final check (things got delayed with COVID) and now I'm ready for a crown. Everyone was wearing a mask and they have protocols in place to be COVID-cautious. They even gave me a list of trusted dentists to continue the process with. On top of being top-notch in quality, Dr. Temlock is personable as well, which makes the experience that much better. All the staff were just as friendly, helpful and accommodating too. Shirley and Robin do a great job setting a professional yet warm tone right from the beginning when you call to set up an appointment and all the way until the end of the process. After having no success trying to put on my crown, she recommended me to Dr. Temlock to get a tooth lengthening. Youtube'ing the process seemed painful and gave me anxiety. I was afraid but needed to get this done since Coachella was an week away. But after meeting Dr. Temlock, he explained that the root canal procedure was worst, so there's nothing to worry about. Fantastic experience with Dr. Temlock and his team. I bit into an olive pit yesterday and cracked my molar in half. I had to get my tooth completely extracted today. For as awful a procedure as it was, Dr. Temlock made it so much better. His "bedside manner" is exactly how you want your periodontist. He was super friendly, explaining everything that was going to happen prior to the operation. He was empathetic, funny, and an overall enjoyable human being. He let me choose music to listen to during the procedure to keep my mind distracted. He even shared a bunch of contact info in case I needed to call afterward with questions. The two assistants that helped me out were great. They were super helpful with figuring out payment information - the restaurant of said olive pit needs to pay me back but I didn't have the info just yet. Also, during the operation, one of them was very calming talking me through everything and stroking my cheek to soothe me while the sounds of cracking teeth were bouncing off the walls. Finally - the office itself is very well decorated, located centrally downtown, and has a fun vibe. Exactly the kind of place you want to go to when you have to go through intense dental work. I received a gum graft from Dr. Temlock, and I'm extremely satisfied by my treatment. This wasn't the first time I had a gum graft, so I had some point of reference of what to expect. However it was a much less painful experience than before. First of all, it honestly did not feel like Dr. Temlock was trying to upsale me. Most of the operation was taken care of by my insurance, and he said he didn't need to give me anesthesia at all. The only thing which was not covered by my insurance were certain stem cells which would improve the speed of which the roof of my mouth recovered after the operation. The most painful part of the entire operation was getting the local anesthesia, for which he used certain needles to numb the areas of the mouth which were undergoing the surgery. I stayed awake as Dr. Temlock poked and cut through my mouth without any pain. He was cheerfully talking to his assistant the entire time, and it was a fun conversation to listen to. He also let me have a pick in the music to listen to during the operation. What I did not expect was how normally I would be able to eat after my operation. The first time I received a gum graft, I had to have a piece of putty stuck to the roof of my mouth where the doctor took my piece of gum. However, Dr. Temlock made me a clear custom retainer, which covered the wound without infringing on my eating habits. (It was also removable, which was quite convenient.) Even after the surgery, I received assistance from Dr. Temlock. I called his office twice with concerns of my stitches coming loose, or some other coverings in my mouth falling off. He was happy to answer my concerns, even after hours. As a person, Dr. Temlock is very amiable. He's easy to get along with, and seems to be a fun person to be around. I'm looking forward to my next appointment with him. read more

Best Dental Experience of My Life: If I could give Dr. Temlock a 6th star, I would. My experience with Dr. Temlock and his entire staff exceeded every expectation I had. I have some severe dental anxiety/fear, but from the moment I called into Dr. T's office and spoke to Shirley, I was put at ease. When I arrived for my initial consultation, the same trend continued... everyone was extremely accommodating, welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable. I felt as though I had known Dr. Temlock for years... his "chairside manner" is laid back, but to the point. I ended up coming back for a deep cleaning and then ultimately a gum graft. Looking back on the experience, even with my severe dental anxiety, this was the most pleasant medical procedure I have ever received. Probably like most people I am not over fond of dental work, but Dr Temlock is really quite amazing. I had an extraction, bone graft, sinus lift and implant. It took about 6 months to do all this and i was in great pain when it all started and will end up with a new crown this month. He relieved the pain, and no pain after the procedures. He his very good at telling you what is happening and what will happen and what to expect. that relieves a lot of pressure and anxiety. I will definitely go back if i need more oral surgery, hopefully not, but glad to know where to go now Roebert read more

I don't think that I have ever left a review on Yelp before today. The team, Dr. Temlock and Shirley in particular, are everything you'd ever want from your periodontist. They made me -- wait for it -- *WANT* to visit them. They are ultra responsive. They are just great in every way. Let me give an example: I had a weekend mishap at the site from which my recent gum graft was taken; Shirley responded to my email immediately on a Saturday and got me into the office at the earliest opportunity to see Dr. Temlock. I'd give them one hundred stars if I could. The word 'wonderful' is an understatement for Dr.Temlock and every member of his amazing team. I was referred to Dr. Temlock for a consult about tooth extraction, bone grafting and dental implant. Right from my first visit - he was thorough and clear about the entire process. And, Shirley is just amazing. She is wonderful at her job. She took care of all the insurance related issues, pulled out all the details and information and explained everything very clearly about my copay; step by step - no surprises! The entire payment plan was transparant and upfront. She even laid out a tentative plan for the entire process; right from the tooth extraction, bone grafting to the final implant procedure. I have never had such a smooth experience at any other dentist's office. I knew my tooth was in a really bad condition and I was nervous during my visit for the tooth extraction; to my surprise everything went so fast and easy. I was able to eat normally right from the next day. On to the next step - Implant. I was nervous because I've heard/read all kinds of stories about dental implants. I asked Dr. Temlock about how painful was it going to be right before my surgery and he said, it was a simple procedure, I might feel slight pressure during the procedure and that's all. And guess what? He was right. I felt nothing. Yes, slight pressure during the procedure but not a thing afterwards. I was in and out of the doctors office in less than 45 minutes. No complications at all. I was able to eat normally right from the day one. Before jumping into any procedure, he explained everything step by step and made sure to answer whatever questions I had. Dr. Temlock is a funny, warm, kind and friendly person - he makes sure you are comfortable and answers all your queries prior to the surgery. I would really like to point this out - I have had really bad experiences with dental x-rays, I know dental x-rays aren't the most pleasant thing but they also don't have to be the worst. I remember Robin taking an x-ray of my tooth and it was so quick, simple and smooth - much easier than what I have experienced in the past. The entire staff at Dr. Temlock's office is very efficient, warm, considerate and welcoming. Visting a dentist always made me nervous; but walking into their office does not even feel like walking into a dentist's office. I found Dr. Temlock through all the great reviews he had on yelp. And I'm so glad I did. When I found out I needed a periodontist I was distraught. I had just gotten comfortable with my current dentist and having to see someone new was nerve wracking. Dr. Temlock's team is amazing. From scheduling appointments with Shirley to getting set up with Dr. Temlock's assistant Miriam, everybody was professional, knowledgeable and super welcoming. Because I was nervous, Dr. Temlock took extra time to explain what he was planning on doing before and even during the procedure, putting my nerves at ease. Even after the procedure, I was concerned on how my tooth was healing. I sent an email around 10:30pm thinking that I wouldn't get a response until the next morning. I originally saw Dr. Temlock when he was the traveling surgeon who would come to my dentist in Redwood City to do care requiring a surgeon. I cannot say enough about his knowledge, communication skills, and artistry when it comes to the work he does. We call him the Tooth Whisperer. I have had several complicated procedures that would normally be difficult to endure but he is so gentle and skilled that I remember one time asking him to let me know when the worst part would start and he was already finished! It will demonstrate just how amazing he is that I now drive to San Francisco for his care. This is my second review ever. I never write reviews. If you are going to get a gum graft surgery (due to gum recession), do yourself a favor and get it done here. I think the two biggest things when going into dental surgery is: 1. feeling comfortable during the operation 2. feeling confident that you will get the care you need post operation I wouldn't pick anyone else besides Dr. Temlock (Surgery guy), Shirley (Treatment Coordinator), and Miriam (DA) to do this again. This was my experience: PRE-OPERATION 09/05/2017: went in for a checkup and assessment - communicating through email, Shirley coordinated with my insurance and dentist to see how much was available in my insurance for the operation and gave very specific details in how much it would cost me as well potential dates for the surgery. - she responded immediately to my emails and got me an answer on 09/07/2017 ~1.5 months pass and I don't really follow up with them. Luckily, Shirley sent me a very friendly email (did not feel pressured at all to go through with the operation) on 10/23 to just check in and see what I was thinking. 11/03/2017: I respond late because I'm lazy and not as considerate but she responds immediately. 11/13/2017: confirm a date for 12/8 12/06/17: I remember that the surgery is in 2 days and panic ask questions to Shirley about insurance and potential other coverages - The day after, she provides me with specific details that allow me to sign up for credit immediately for the surgery the next day DURING OPERATION (12/08/2017) - Dr. Temlock and Miriam are generally just easy going/cool people. They made me feel completely at ease and their demeanor made it seem like this was a piece of cake which made me feel very very comfortable. If they were lying or freaking out on the inside, I felt none of that during operation. Played pretty good music as well. POST OPERATION (HUGE KUDOS) - Being a paranoid patient, I asked for an appointment 6 days later post operation (even though I had one scheduled for couple weeks later anyways) and they slid me in for the next day. Went in and nothing was wrong. Miriam came in to check on me and I came out of there not feeling bad for "wasting their time". This is how everyone should feel getting/asking for care. - The day after, I freaked out again because my glue stitches came off so I called the office on a Friday night. Not surprisingly there was no one there. Thankfully, since Shirley is awesome, she emailed me immediately noticing that there was a missed call in their office and reassured me that this was just glue stitching and nothing to worry about (verified with a picture I even sent). Hopefully, the length of this review proves that I really did appreciate their service. read more

As a newcomer to the Bay Area, having recently relocated from the east coast, I found it difficult to find physicians and dentists that provided the level of care I was used to. Through recommendations, I was referred to Dr. Alec Temlock and his practice in downtown San Francisco. Given that I am prone to extensive plaque accumulations, I need to have four cleanings a year. I have extremely sensitive gums and so deep cleanings tend to be very painful for me unless my gums are anesthetized. At Dr. Temlock's practice, the dental hygienists have the lightest touch that I have found - so light in fact that I only need numbing gel to get through the cleanings. The dental hygienists are thoughtful and because they know how sensitive my gums are, continually stop throughout the cleaning to ask how I'm feeling and to see if I'm experiencing any pain. They are truly very caring professionals. After each cleaning, Dr. Temlock examines my gums and measures the amount of gum loss. I am always very apprehensive of this part of the examination because I know that maybe I could've done better with my home cleanings. But Dr. Temlock has a very reassuring 'can do' attitude and approach. He takes the time to praise me for the gum work that I do at home and he reinforces the fact that if I keep up the good work, I won't need gum surgery any time soon. That alone is the inspiration that I need to continue my lengthy daily routines at home! Dr. Temlock is very engaging and puts you at ease right away with his great energetic smile. I especially like that you receive a follow up call the next day from one of his caring staff members - Lindsey, Miriam, Melissa or Sandra - to check in on you and to make sure you are feeling alright. The practice is very accessible by BART and the office is bright and has a nice open feel to it. Well, usually going to any dentist fills me with anxiety but I did my research and had multiple consultations with other periodontists and finally found Dr. Temlock. Thank goodness! Not only is he a fantastic Doctor, but he has an incredible staff. Shirley and Miriam (I think is her name) are AMAZING! Never once did I feel anxious or disappointed during my visits. I first arrived to the office for a recession and grafting consultation and was referred here by my general dentist. They took X-rays and Dr. Temlock spent a good amount of time with me discussing my options and was so patient in answering my (many) questions. I came back yesterday for a Frenectomy and I left feeling confident about the procedure. Today, I feel surprisingly well. No issues at all. Dr. Temlock performed a gum graft on one of my teeth and did an amazing job! I'd been avoiding getting the procedure done because simply put, it disgusted me. I went in for a consultation with the Doctor and he made me feel so at ease and managed my expectations very clearly. He was honest about the fears I had and assured me that although it's going to be a bit uncomfortable he would do everything he could to minimize it. I felt no pain during the surgery aside from the numbing needles. Afterwards, there was more discomfort than pain, mainly because I couldn't eat burgers and tacos for a while. The worst part of it all was some bleeding one night from the donor site. But thankfully Dr. Temlock had already told me that I could expect that and what to do. I was referred to Dr. Temlock from a co-worker while I was seeking a second opinion about a fractured tooth - it was really hard to figure out who to trust so I went with her suggestion. The pain would spike up at various times, so I was hoping surgery wasn't the only option and the other periodontist I saw didn't talk much about options or seem to care- his focus was with scheduling my surgery date. I didn't appreciate feeling like I was there to take a number with everyone else. I really appreciate his site (www.sfpid.com ) - it gave him a ton of good information and I could tell he took his job really professionally. It honestly helped me have a much better idea about what questions to ask and how to make a more informed decision based on what I learned. Big bonus. Another big factor, for me anyway, is going to a modern office - filling out forms online, sending my insurance information beforehand, etc. is really awesome. I expect my Doc's office to operate like it's 2015, not 1995. In fact, everything is modern and thought out about their office (and that exposed brick!), it just felt like a top notch joint. Bottom line, i didn't feel forced into a decision, I liked the entire the experience, and the procedure went exactly how he described it. I was feeling pretty much back to normal after a short rest.
