To understand Kadampa Center, it might help to know about little about the spread of Buddhism into…read morethe West and into North America. In (very) short, Tibetan Buddism and Zen (born from Japanese and Korean traditions) all are part of Mahayana Buddhism - one of the two main sects of Buddhism. "Yana" translates to "vehicle" in English which partially explains how and why this particular type of Buddhism spread so well in America - a largely Judeo-Christian country very familiar with the conduits of "spreading" faith and ideas. Now, this center is a small and simple place of practice and worship. It's budget is small, and it relies heavily on small member contributions. They have a resident teacher as well. He's Tibetan, very highly regarded, but speaks in a heavily accented voice with an intermediate grasp on English. Still, he has been there for a long time and is very much a part of Kadampa. Aside from the regulars, the visitors or attendees generally range from the curious to the disenchanted Christians who want to learn more about Buddhism. They are genuine in their desire to change themselves and learn. Personally, I have a hard time attending here. For me, part of Buddhist practice deals heavily with aesthetics, location, and environment. Having practiced Buddhism for years in Korea, I can't get over the disconnect between the message, the location, and the ambiance with the peaceful bliss of silent temple or mountain meditation. For an extreme lack of a better word, it comes across as an imitation. That being said, it is the only English-speaking Mahayana site in the Triangle (there is one in Chapel-Hill but it is different on all fronts), and we need it. The more it grows, perhaps, the better it will get.

Discovered my internal navigation system by getting out of my own way!…read more So, I'm trying to add some perspective here... We have no problem in putting our trash in the front yard of our homes to be removed once a week; or, go to the bathroom daily (hopefully!)for the body to discard whatever is unnecessary; and, many of us, even pay a monthly fee for anti-virus protection to consistently eliminate anything that could affect our holy devices. Yet, how many of us, ever think about doing the same with the biggest and most powerful computer of them all, the roommate that lives in our head and never ceases to keep its mouth shut-- our human mind? I personally could continue, for example, spending countless hours of my life watching television, or lose count of the minutes involved in unending chitchat about nothing really that is of substance -- and, still hoping for things to change, to get better. I'm so thankful that here in North Carolina, in the city where I live (Raleigh), exists a wonderful place exists that teaches me the most beautiful and simple of methods to do the opposite of that of what I only knew: that one can never have enough of anything, that one can never be satisfied. I've chosen to INVEST minutes out of my every day to regain the infinite wisdom that has always remained there by removing, discarding, deleting all the unnecessary crap I've piled up since I've been able to form words into sentences, into thoughts. I'm done with hoping. I've decided to BE happy, unconditionally happy....and, the only one who could prevent me from doing that is myself.

I am not at all the stereotypical "energy healing" type, until I had Reiki done about 10 years ago when I lived in Memphis. It was an incredibly relaxing, comfortable and healing experience. Having tried other Reiki treatments, I remained disappointed until I stumbled upon Kate Thomas, new to Harmony Life. Kate has a gift. She's very calming, gentle, kind and understands the various ebbs and flows of energy throughout the body that effect the mind. During stressful times, Reiki (and massage) are my go-to treatments. I was not a believer, and now I am. To have Kate accessable in the Triangle is, in itself, a gift. Her understanding of aromatherapy coupled with Reiki makes the tension melt away, and her calm voice and very comfortable room at Harmony Life just makes all the difference in the world. I've also taken her yoga class and love that it is kept for a small group (or private yoga if I want) and it more focused on mind/body practice and not the "workout" yoga we see in many other places. Extreme kudos to Kate Thomas and Harmony Life.

My buddy in NJ got me hooked on hot yoga and so far I've taken about 7-8 of hot yoga classes too. Now in NJ hot yoga is a dry heat. Fast forward to NC and the hot yoga at Firefly is another animal. The room is heated with like humidifier steam...you can literally see the steam in the room. When class starts the steamers are turned off and that heat is on in that room! I saw 2 other objects in the room and maybe some heat was coming from them too. Oh did I mention the temperature outside was already about 95 degrees. I think the room itself was 100 degrees. The instructor William was amazing. He has a very calming voice and because the class was so intimate he knew I was never in his class and another woman as well. She was from Philly and I was the Jersey girl. William welcomes you and makes you feel very comfortable. We progressed through the moves slowly but intensely. William also walked around the room to correct form and help you to get deeper into the stretch. When the class was done corpse pose aka: savasana felt so GOOD! I loved the ice cold towel they give each student at the end. The studio is hidden. At first I thought my GPS was wrong. Have you ever seen the movie Deliverance? Yes, think that movie. The studio is inside of a like country club/retirement community/pool house...just weird but it's beautiful. The yoga place when you walk in is on the left and there is an attendant at the desk. There are locker rooms and showers...the yoga room is upstairs door on the right. I purchased a 2 week deal for $25. I am in town for 3 days but you can't beat the deal. So if in the Cary/Raleigh area check them out and make sure you're able to take the heat! Good place very good place.
