The only reason I am giving this practice a 2-star rating is because I like the doctor; however, the staff is very lacking. They are loud and unprofessional and do not know how to properly book appointments. You are never seen at your scheduled appointment time--appointments consistently run 30+ minutes late. If appointments were being scheduled correctly, this would not happen so often. They also frequently make mistakes when booking appointments. On more than one occasion, my appointment was scheduled with the wrong person, which meant I could not be seen as planned. The waiting room is nicely decorated, but it is not pleasant to sit in because the staff talks loudly about happy hour, food, and other personal topics, laughing so loudly that it becomes ridiculous. It took three attempts--wasting a significant amount of my time--to have a lab sample properly collected and submitted. The first visit was booked with the wrong person. The second time, they claimed there was an error in the paperwork and had to collect the sample again. I then had to return a third time for the specimen collection to finally be completed by the nurse. They also do not answer the phones when you call regarding prescription refills. Instead, you are required to leave a voicemail and are told it may take up to 72 hours for the refill to be authorized. I followed this process and never received a response. When I called back to follow up, I was told there was no record of my request, which suggests the voicemail messages are not being checked or are simply being deleted. If you have a lot of time to waste and don't mind sitting in a noisy office, you may be fine. Otherwise, beware. read more

Really having a lot of trouble getting simple prescriptions refilled. I have had to walk into the office twice now in order to get it refilled. During my last blood work they didn't even do a simple PSA test, which had always been a standard. I'm 73 and my dad died at 75 from prostate cancer. This is medical malpractice. I have been going to Dr. Roka (Barlite location) since I was a child and now (Stone oak location) as an adult. This is the doctor that my family has gone to for generations and we still go there. Staff is super friendly and check in/out is quick which I appreciate. They answer the phone when I call which is a plus! I also appreciate a doctor who listens to you and genuinely wants you to feel better. My husband and I have been patients of Dr Roka for over 20 years. Dr Roka is a prestigious Dr and an excellent Dr. The most unfortunate thing is that Dr Roka's office has not been able to handle the high demand that the Dr has on a daily basis. We waited in the office for more than two hours for the Dr to see my husband. Unfortunately he apologized to us, but he doesn't have to apologize. He gave my husband a better quality of life being thorough and persistent when I took Bob for a few confusing problems he was having. Dr Roka sent us for MRI and then to the Neurologist. Diagnosed Rare non operable Brain Cancer. Treatment then 10weeks nothing killed the cancer. I'm thankful to Dr Roka for the 10 Weeks with Bob. Dr Roka is in charge of my medical needs and dealing me. They are short staffed and have no problem telling you that. Worst bedside manner, the office never answers the phones and you will have to make time out of your day to go in to the office because you can't get a hold of anyone over the phone nor do they return phone calls. Then they will make you sign in and wait just to talk to them because your RX is written wrong. Speaking with Colleen today she would not listen and only speak. I finally tried to speak she then told me this is probably not the right office for you then hung up on me and was putting words in my mouth. This Dr. wants to see you every three months instead of every six months. Then bill every code possible to your insurance company. So look at your E.O.B's. Dr. Alexander Roka now own's a Med. Getting refills for your medications is usually a major hassle. They don't respond when the pharmacy faxes them a request for a refill. Then you have to call their office to request a refill. Then for a medication that you have been taking for years with 90 day prescriptions they send the pharmacy a 30 day prescription. Then you tell them you need a 90 day prescription for your insurance policy of needing 90 days for long term drugs. Then the doctor office says you have to come in for a prescription of longer than 30 days. Some drugs you need to keep taking or you could be in a life threatening situation. To get this kind of hassle is irresponsible and against what a doctor's office should be doing to protect your health and even your life. It's bad news with them. read more

Dr Roka was my physiatrist for two years. I only saw him once, my first visit. I have deduced his only reason for taking new patients is to do a lot of unnecessary test. The response received was, don't worry as insurance will cover it. During the two years it's has been almost impossible to get response. They do not answer the phone and his staff rarely respond to the phone. messages. Tried to call during office hours, no response so I went to the nearby med clinic. I was immediately given care. I left with an EpiPen based on their concern for the severe allergic response. Nothing from Roka's office. Frustrating point is that at his office there are typically 10 support people in the back just standing around a counter doing absolutely nothing. (I suspect it's a contest among the group to see who can do the least amount of work.) His office staff and PA are beyond incompetent Also I just learned he has a special concierge number for his favorite clients. I called the number where the phone was picked up on the third ring. This is evidence to me that he knows the incompetence of his staff and the scam he is running. I recommend running to any other Dr but him. I wish they had negative ratings, because I feel a "1" is too high. read more

I just left Dr. Roka's care after more than two years. Dr. Roka himself is okay. His front office staff is deplorable. It's nearly impossible to get anyone to answer the phone. Typically, I drove there and presented myself at the front desk regardless of the issue. It's impossible to ignore the person standing in front of you. I was a new Medicare patient, and had to ask Tricare to send my records to his office. After months of Dr Roka's staff saying they didn't have them, I went to Tricare and they told me they mailed the records months ago on a CD. I went back to Dr. Roka's office, and the person running the records office rudely insisted they did not have my records, suggesting I was confused, and went back to her office. A few minutes later, one of the nurses came up to the front desk with the CD in hand, saying she found it in Dr. Roka's office. When I had my next appointment, Dr. Roka did not have my records in my file -- his staff had once again lost them. I had to go back to Tricare and get my records again, this time an emailed .pdf to me, which I burned onto a thumb drive and hand carried to his office. The final straw for me was my unsuccessful effort to get a physician's statement to support a VA disability claim. I made three appointments, discussed it face to face with Dr. Roka twice, brought the forms over myself, and followed up with his nursing staff several times, all over a four month period. Nothing worked -- I could not get the statement despite Dr. Roka assuring me personally on two separate visits he would complete it within a week. I gave up, and went back to Tricare. Even though I had been "off-ramped" to Medicare more than two years earlier, they gave me the documentation I needed. I'm sorry to have to write this, because I personally like Dr. Roka. All my issues are with the office staff, who he relies on to keep things running smoothly. Individually, most of them seem like good people, but collectively, there's something incredibly dysfunctional going on over there. read more

The Dr. is actually a good guy but the staff is absolutely horrible. especially the appointment setting guy. very rude, cuts you off mid sentence, puts you on hold while your trying to explain the situation to him with out asking you to hold while he checks on the situation for you. You're talking then all of the sudden you hear hold music forever. He uses his hold button as a shut up button. Then you call asking for a supervisor and he transfers you to a recording. i drive down to the office and confronted the little twerp and was very upset. They placed me in a room while I was trying to calm down with the way I was treated the director comes in and starts yelling and pointing the finger at me tell me to stop raising my voice while he literally keeps yelling at me and talking down to me. At that point I picked up my medical records and got out of there. I will never recommend this place to anyone. Again, the Drs. Overlooking the long waits for scheduled appointments, you also have to deal with no one answering calls, inboxes that are full so you can't leave a message, prescriptions that don't get sent to the pharmacy, obnoxious front desk billing and credit person, no ability to pay online, no online capabilities, and the fact that the front desk people with no medical background feel it's ok to ask what prescriptions you take at the front desk in front of a waiting room full of people. First of all we will be looking for another Dr for my Husband Fernando, the office personnel are rude , front desk lady told my husband they would not see him if he did not get blood work and she was canceling his regular appointment for refills and would set new appointment for blood work another day .. we asked can he have blood work done today ? Her answer " No" , so I asked her " so you are forcing people to have tests you want in order to see the Dr ? "She said no,but he needs blood work in order to see the Dr . This went on until my husband was allowed to still see the Dr .. so the P.A . Comes in he says he heard the whole thing and that's ridiculous of her , well my thoughts are ,should he have come out to set her straight ? Who does she think she is ?She had a bad attitude, so P.A tells my husband he can get blood work done today at his appointment no need to schedule next week ,so my husband gets his blood work done ,$111.00 . I feel extremely sorry for the patients of this office. For over a year now they continue to call my number and leave messages for a patient (not me) with lab results, appointment information, medicine details, etc. I have continually tried to call their office to let them know their contact info for that patient is incorrect and before I can say anything they put me on hold and never come back. This morning I was on hold for 25 minutes (with appointment selection) before I hung up. Yesterday I tried the reporting department and never got through. This office has literally gone down a steep hill. Staff is very unhelpful. Trying to get a prescription renewed is impossible. Mine ran out a week ago and nobody will call the pharmacy to renew it. I just visited the doctor a few months ago so another visit isn't needed to get the refill. When I call to try to get the refill, nobody answers the phone, and pushing 4 for prescriptions gets you to a voicemail box that is full and not taking any messages. Not only would I not recommend this doctor, I firmly believe that you could be risking your life if you need a prescription because it is obviously not important to them. Dr. Alexander Roka has been my physician for over 10 years! The front staff is extremely friendly and nice at this time. Over the years, I have dealt with rude receptionists who place patients on hold for over 15 - 20 min. I will not be returning to this practice after dealing with the shortage of strep test kits. There are always new faces when it comes to PAs and assistants taking vitals. The PAs have always been very professional and helpful but with lacking resources all they can do is apologize. I am disappointed in Dr. Roka and the way he has let his business deteriorate. If he focused on these reviews and actually addressed the concerns, he could have a very solid practice with returning patients. It is very difficult to book an appointment with Dr. Roka himself. He is a very down to earth, friendly, knowledgeable doctor but his two locations will continue to suffer with poor ratings and disgruntled patients if he does not remedy simple quick fixes like better customer service over the phone and having medical test kits on hand. I called up the Texas Med Clinic at Stone Oak and questioned a rep there about having strep kits. He replied, "Yes, we have them and are only $36 per test private pay". I will not be returning to this clinic ever again. Do the same until Dr. Roka begins to take note and act on his patients' concerns and constructive criticism. P.S. We've been going here for years. I liked it better when he was by himself with one PA. But that was 15 years ago. I understand his Business has grown but you should still take care of your patients. We've considered leaving a million times but always pushed it off. I've always been a fan of the doctor himself but his office staff has always been extremely unpleasant. I have been a patient for over 12 years. Dr Roka has always been a caring and considerate doctor. He always listens and I never felt rushed through my office visits. The problem is his staff. They are poorly trained and lack the knowledge to serve his patients. The receptionist are down right rude. Calling to the office is an irritating challenge to get through to a person to make an appointment or get a question answered. Dr Roka has been our family physician for 15 years now, he's the nicest man, well educated and up to date on new treatments and sends patients to well recommended specialists. I highly recommend him! Wait times aren't usually bad, and if he's booked you can always fill in with a PA,( physicians assistant). I'm driving quite aways to see him as we don't live near him as when we first started seeing Dr Roka, but its worth the 40-50 min. drive. Let me tell you about Doctor Alex Roka. Once, the man prevented me from having unnecessary surgery by finding my appendix (which the ER thought had ruptured) in an MRI image that everyone else missed. While I was in prep. Once, the man was bucked off a horse, broke his neck, and just as soon as he was able (to the dismay of his staff) started treating his patients again. Especially the ones who were very ill. I may not like his staff (one in particular), and his web page is so bad that it infuses me with a white hot rage every time I look at it, but as far as a doctor and a human being I'll continue to see him until he closes down his practice. There are reviews I have seen on the Internet which suggest that he is only interested in money, the old treat-and-street approach. I'm telling you that is nothing short of a lie. I will say that there are SOME days in which it seems like he's only half listening, but to that I have two things to mention. First. He's a human being. We all have days like that. The receptionists are VERY rude. They talk to you as if you are a child, and they'll hang up the phone without concluding the conversation. Also, Roka himself will gladly offer a "necessary blood test" to make sure everything is O.K. without mentioning the blood test is $10,000. read more

I recently moved to San Antonio for college by myself and my insurance company recommended me to see dr. Roka which I think he is a great and caring doctor however the ladies in the front are unprofessional and simply do no care about others. I went in last Wednesday to renew my prescription and I've called everyday since (Today is Friday) and everyday the receptionist promise that the prescription will be filled today. I've been going to Dr. Roka close to three years. He literally saved my life on my first visit. I had become Medicare eligible and decided to leave the Tricare system in order to have more continuity of care since I am a Type II Diabetic with cardiac issues. After my first visit (EKG), he referred me to Dr Kiesz (cardiology) which ultimately led me to Dr. Otero (Thoracic Surgeon) and a triple bypass.
