I've been going to Dr. Roka close to three years. He literally saved my life on my first visit. I had become Medicare eligible and decided to leave the Tricare system in order to have more continuity of care since I am a Type II Diabetic with cardiac issues. After my first visit (EKG), he referred me to Dr Kiesz (cardiology) which ultimately led me to Dr. Otero (Thoracic Surgeon) and a triple bypass. If it would not have been for Dr Roka's great care and concern I would have died of a sudden heart attack like my father (42) and my grandfather (52). read more

Absolutely the worst run office I have ever been to. I normally do not write reviews but enough is enough. Every time I get a prescription refilled for a medication I take regularly, it takes over a week for them to call it in. During that week I'm waiting I have to call the office and remind them multiple times that I have not received my medication and it still hasn't been called in. Calling the office is another story altogether. You are lucky if you can get anyone on the phone. My last appointment was Thursday and on the following Thursday my medication had still not been called in. When I called the office and spoke to the person that answered the call she got frustrated and hung up on me. Enough is enough - I will be switching doctors. read more

The doc is great, but the staff here is awful. The 2 staffers that showed up on time were less than friendly and seemed completely uninformed about anything I asked them. If you have to call, the lines ring forever or you're placed on eternal hold. If they offer a call back, it can take up to 2 weeks (This happened 3 times). I have had an 8am appt scheduled for 6 months. I was finally seen after 8:30. If they're already 30 mins behind for 8am appts, how far behind will they be ar 2pm??? read more

I've never actually seen dr. Roka. Each time I've made an appointment, I have seen the nurse practitioner, Terri finiki. While Terri has been awesome each time I've gone, the office staff is horrible. I've never received a phone call with test results. I've always had to call to get them. About 50% of phone calls will result in getting hung up on. The other 50% will result in someone greeting you, asking what you need, and then placing you on hold. After a couple minutes, a different person will greet you, ask what you need, and then place you on hold. Cross your fingers that this only happens a couple times per call. My record is four. Testing takes weeks here. X-rays, blood tests, etc, are best done elsewhere. I had a followup appointment here for a pneumonia hospitalization. It took a week and a half for the chest X-ray to come in. I never got a call, I had to call several times until a nurse finally told me it had been reviewed by Terri. It's a good thing it came back clear, since otherwise I would've been walking around for almost another two weeks with pneumonia. It's been over two weeks and I'm still waiting on the results of the CBC blood test (I've never had it take more than 3 days elsewhere, and as an ex cancer patient, I've literally had hundreds of these blood tests done. Wait times are awful. Last time, my appointment was at 10am. I was finally seen at 12:10pm, after 2+ hours of waiting in the exam room. read more

Dr Roka is incredible he doesnt have the usual ego that goes with the letters behind his name. He uses his brain. I only see Dr R these days for the big stuff because his PA Matt is delightful and intelligent and really easy to talk to. He has never steered me wrong and he is so caring and respectful. I sympathize with other reviews about the staff but Dr Roka and PA Matt are well worth dealing with the staff. Im only giving 2 stars because i like Dr. Roka himself. His office practice however leaves a ton to be desired. There is never any parking, but even that i can deal with. However i cannot deal with making an appt for a certain time and having to wait almost an hour before getting in. Meanwhile they are taking back other clients and saying that they are just here for blood work, we were just here for a booster shot... Then we watch as several pharmacy reps go back and can see the nurses and office folks stop what they are doing to get free muffins and pens... Ridiculous. They clearly overbook and have no regard for their clients time. Greedy and rude. We will be changing doctors as soon as we can. Sad because we liked Dr. Roka, but its not like we even get to see him anymore. We pay good money to see a PA. read more

This guy is a complete jerk. Normally the wait is between 30-45 minutes. This time it hit an hour and 10. Still no dr. They blame it on people taking longer than expected but if thats the case then they should compensate for that in their scheduling... this is to consistent for it to be isolated. When we said we were leaving after waiting for so long, they said fine see ya. The dr was standing right there and could care less. Just said bye. For a provider of services to care so little about the time of the people he serves shows his arrogance and level of jerk he is. Just because he is a dr doesnt make his time so much more valuable than the rest of us.. nor does it give him permission to be such an a$$. My family and I have been patients of Dr. Roka's for 20 years. I love Dr. Roka, but his staff is so rude and unprofessional. I'm so disappointed with the disorganization and unprofessionalism in this office that I think it's time to find another physician. This makes me really sad because we all love Dr. Roka. read more

Dr. Roka was a rare find. Pre-Katrina, my doctor in New Orleans was one of the best in family medicine in this country. I spent the last seven years in Houston and couldn't find someone who would really listen; ended up being a customer of a "doc-in-a-box" more often than not. Dr. Roka really listens! Thinks things over, then gives advice. He allows you to mange your own health with his expert advice. I really don't see the problems listed other places online...in matter of fact, I see the exact opposite! I highly recommend Dr. Roka. read more

So I went there for my appointment, and the receptionist said , oh you don't have appointment today , your appt was yesterday at 9am ... what? I've been a patient of Dr. Roka for 22 years now. I cannot believe how things have changed. I don't trust his staff, and they're completely incompetent. I have numerous stories about how they "forgot" to call about test results, and a few were life-threatening. Every time I ask to speak to Doctor Roka, I am told he's busy, but he will call me back. Again, Dr. Roka is an amazing doctor, but his staff is total shit. Let me remind you I've been a patient for 22 years, and one of his PAs yelled out to the staff that I asked for drugs (medications I've been on and off for years) and refused a UA test. I'm completely aware of the policies in place, but the only reason why I ASKED (not refused) about the UA test was that I wasn't currently taking any medication, and the last time I did a UA at the office I received a $9,000 bill for a urine test that I had to fight for 6 months. I love Doctor Roka, but it's time for me to move on. I recently had a COVID test done, and his office failed to call me back about results after I called 3 times. I called one last time to express my concerns about my symptoms and requested to talk to the doctor. I was told he would call me back. I haven't heard back for a week. I have now called for 4 days in a roll to get my medicine renewed and as of yet, no one from Dr. Roka's office has contacted me after leaving 6 messages for the Nurse to call me. Dr. Roka is an very good doctor, however, his wait time for making appointment and during office visits is getting longer and the staff members seem to show a lack of concern. Whomever this staff member, Colleen is, do not return telephone calls to patients within an ample period of time. 4 day plus, and waiting. read more

To be clear. I have never actually meet Dr. Roka. However, I do see the physicians assistant when I go in. I have been a patient for about four months now, after moving to San Antonio from Houston. The reason I came to Dr. Roka was because of his location in proximity to my house. In my opinion, the nurse and the physician's assistant are outstanding. I couldn't be happier with the service and kindness once I get into the exam room. However, I don't think I have ever experienced a more incompetent and rude office staff in my life. I will give few examples. The second time I made an appointment, I called the office, the office lady answered and asked me to hold. I obliged. After twenty five minutes of holding (and I mean literally 25 minutes according to the call duration on my phone) I hung up, waited ten minutes, and called back. The same lady answered, immediately asked me to hold "for just a moment," and before I could respond, sent me to hold. I waited another fifteen minutes, hung up, and immediately called back. The same lady answered for the third time. This time, before she could ask me to hold, I told her that I had been waiting for forty minutes, and further asked if there was a better time to call. The lady replied in a rude manner, "I'm just going to give a piece of paper to someone, I'll be right back," and without allowing for a response, put me on hold. She did not come back for ten minutes, so I hung up. I called immediately back and someone answered the phone and immediately hung up. This happened twice. I waited two hours and called back. When I called back, I voiced my dissatisfaction, albeit, in a calm but stern manner, and subsequently made the appointment. Another example, I have three monthly prescriptions that I require, two of which are very important, the third is a sleeping medication that I take nightly due to insomnia. I called the doctors office on a Tuesday afternoon and requested a prescription refill. I was not going to run out of my prescription until Saturday. They told me that the refill would be ready by the next day, I told them I was fine with that. The next day I called and asked when I could pick it up. They said it was not ready yet, and to wait until tomorrow. This happened all the way until Friday. On Friday, I called and told them that I needed to pick up my prescription. The same lady, who hung up on me in the previous example and the one that I had talked to every day before, told me that she didn't have any record of a prescription refill. I was obviously upset, told her that I absolutely needed it today. She said okay. I asked her what time they close. She said six. I said I would be there around 5:30, after work, and if that time would be suitable. She said yes. I arrived at 5:40 to find the doctors office closed. It turns out they did not close at six. On Saturday, I went to the doctors office in person, in the morning. I said nothing about the miscommunication the day before and asked if I could have my prescription--keep in mind that this was the day I ran out--the office lady said she didn't have it and that the doctor was not in nor did they have a prescription pad to write it on. I didn't know what to do. I told her of my requests since Tuesday, and informed her of exactly how she was affecting my life through her inattention. She assured me that it would be ready by first thing Monday morning. The rest of the weekend was hard. At 8AM, Monday morning I arrived at the doctors office. Requested my prescription, and they informed me that it wouldn't be ready until later in the day (at around three to be precise). At this point I had had enough. Requested to speak to someone else. The office staff member approached, and informed me that the doctor was out of the office and that he would be back in an hour, and I could pick it up then. I couldn't an hour, I had work, so I told them I would be back at the end of the day. Finally, at the end of the day, I arrived and asked for he prescription. The lady, without looking at me, held out her hand and said, "that will be ten dollars." I couldn't believe it. Not only had her ignorance dramatically influenced three days of my life, she requested that I pay her for it. I giggled with distastefully and gave her my card. I said, "it's amazing that your charging me after all that you have put me through." She replied, "I wish we didn't even do prescriptions, they are too much work." That's right. A lady who works for a doctor said that asking the doctor to write a prescription is too much work. By the way, the PA or the doctor was never informed of the request until that Monday. The office lady just never asked. I hope Dr. Roka will one day realize that while his medical team is outstanding, the young Hispanic front desk lady, is absolutely horrible, beyond my abilities to describe. I'm certain it will one day cause me to leave. Furthermore, by reading he other reviews, I am apparently in good company. read more

I would give this doctor 0 stars, but that was not an option. My husband had a new patient appointment and needed a physical. His appointment was at 2pm. At 3pm he asked how much longer it would be, the receptionist said you are next. During this time we kept seeing patients walking right in and going straight to the back. At 3:30 my husband asked how much longer and she again said you are next. After 1 1/2 hours of not being seen, we walked out. This is ridiculous. What a complete disregard for a person's time. I guess they don't want any new patients because this is definitely a way to turn them away. We never saw the doctor (or anyone) and never will. We are just going to try another practice. If scheduling is that bad, then you need to make appointments farther apart or take less appointments per day. Just flat out rude to do that to people! read more

My coworker advised me that this place was good so I went for a check up. They took a blood sample and sent it to the lab. I was charged nearly 3 THOUSAND dollars for that. They claimed ALL of my MRA funds. I called to dispute the charges and they claimed they would call me back on Friday. That was 2 months ago. I filed a claim with my insurance and they were unable to get my MRA funds back. Long story short DON'T go here, they will over charge you and you can't do anything about it. Worst part is they generally don't care about resolving the issue. I didn't even get the results of the test I was overcharged for. SMH read more

I found Dr. Roka after going to several doctors in this area. Dr. Roka was the first doctor that took the time to listen to my health profile and looked at the whole picture rather than treating each symptom separate. Needless to say I recommend him 100%. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Roka for over 10 years and while he is a good and caring doctor, his staff is probably the worst I have had to encounter. I am not just throwing that out there and I have given them plenty of opportunities to change my perception. They are unprofessional, rude, uncourteous and inefficient. I have waited over 2hrs to be seen and when you are sick that is A LONG time. They have lost my husbands labs on more than 2 occasions. They are just terrible. I have told Dr. Roka about my experience w/them and told him that he would lose my family as patients if he didn't get them some training. Nothing has changed. I am sadly looking for another physician in the Stone Oak area. That makes me sad because Dr. Roka knows my husband and I very well and now we have to start over. Just got home after my doctor's appointment. Only problem is that I was never seen. I was scheduled for a 4pm appointment with Dr. Roka. After an hour of waiting, I finally threw in the towel, walked up to the counter and told them they could take me off the list. In the hour I sat in the waiting area, I saw 3 other patients come in AFTER me and get called back BEFORE me. I also saw 2 pharm reps come and go. Must have been the "goodies" they brought that caught the staff's attention. Here's the thing - this type of treatment is completely unacceptable. Dr. Roka - you are a service provider and patients are your customers. It is not okay to allow your staff to overbook on purpose or hire inept staff that don't understand the basic FIFO (First In, First Out) concept. You will eventually lose enough customers to make your wallet feel it. And to the staff this afternoon - you are insensitive idiots. I sat 10 feet from you for an hour. So if it was an oversight that I wasn't called back sooner, shame on you. As front desk clerks, you have basically two responsibilities - get patients checked in and called back. You shouldn't have acted so surprised when I came up to YOU to make you aware of my wait. Patients are the ones who allow you to get a paycheck - you should keep that top of mind. I've seen Dr. Roka for a number of years for really mild issues....seasonal allergies, a cold, etc. But that's over now. And it's really unfortunate because I think Dr. Roka is a good enough doctor. Showed up for my appointment on March 25 12.15 2016. The hispanic lady behind the desk while still helping someone else yelled at me "we are closed" . She refused to look at my cellphone with the appointment confirmation. Since I was short in medication she was willing to call Dr. Roka with the request to call in the medication. She left a message on Dr.Roka's answering machine but refused to wait for an answer since she had an appointment (more important than a patient) and had to leave the office in 8 minutes. She wanted to call the police if I did not leave. I am a physician myself and worked in healthcare since decades but this kind of approach is inacceptable. I have been seeing Dr Roka for over 10 years, he is great, Dr. Matt is great and Colleen is great. However the rest of the staff needs to be replaced especially the rude unprofessional receptionist named April or Amanda. I can't ever seem to remember her name. I have to call back multiple times just to get a live person and then I get put on hold for a minimum of 10 minutes since she said she never has any back up support (or so she says) on the phone. The billing office is just as bad. I was billed for a procedure that was never received and have tried to reach the billing office 3 times, I even went to the office on a Thursday and was told the business office is closed on Thursdays. I went to the office on 11/3, called 11/14 at 12:15pm left vm called 11/22 11:05 am left vm still no call back. I even called 11/29 at 10:36 am still nothing!! The wait time is always 45 minutes to 1.5 hours as well. I hate to leave Dr. Roka but if he doesn't improve his staff I am sure I will be able to find another doctor. I also would not recommend any new patients to him unless you have a lot of patience, a lot of spare time to waste waiting to be seen and time to fight claims that you are billed for that you never received. read more

Seen at the Nogalitos location by PA on my first appt. Office is very dingy and unclean looking. Staff took over 30mins to check me in. Worst part of this clinic is that the PA told me one thing in person and the staff is now claiming " I am not correct and that is not what the paperwork reflects" Had he just been honest from the beginning I could of saved myself the hassle of being seen with them. Dr roka has always been very well versed about my medications, etc but his staff is awful, If i need a refill and my refills have run out, one could pass before his awful staff gets around to responding to the pharmacy's fax. I usually try to start on monday or tuesday since many calls are required to get them to respond. The other thing, half the time they say they are going to send the script to the pharmacy but by the time you realize the pharmacy does not have, never got it, they are closed so one has to start all over the next day, hope it isn't a saturday and you needed an antibotic. I had to resort to asking if I could take them with me. I no longer have him as my doctor and my new doctor is very efficient, return your calls promptly and attend to refills right away. I can only assume he is unaware of the issues folks have with his staff. I would think he is just isolated from all the issues folks have. He has a lot of minions there in his office with only a couple of them efficient, I really don't know how he gets away with having such a terrible staff. read more

Dr. Roka is an excellent doctor, unfortunately his awful staff takes away from his ability to treat patients. His nurse did not schedule my hida scan (to diagnose gall bladder issues) in a timely manner which resulted in me having to wait over the weekend in pain for the test. Then it took her 2 days to get back to me after the results were in (I called the lab) to generate a referral to a specialist. I called twice a day until she finally responded. Upon arrival at the specialist, she had not sent them the necessary documents (lab results and insurance referral) THEN when I showed up for my pre-op appointment, she had not turned in the necessary referral forms. So I had a my gallbladder attack on 11 September and did not have it removed until 5 October due to her inability to do her job! I am sadly leaving his practice after 10+ years due to the unnecessary pain and suffering I had to endure because of his staff. Today I took my sister to see the PA for her first time appt. Her apt was at 11 am and we arrived at 10:40 and did paper work. At 11:30 I asked what the wait was about and was told she was next. there were no other people waiting in the lobby. at 11:40 I went to the back desk and asked about time wait and was told that she was next her information had not been inputted into the computer. The doc assistant was very rude and seemed not to care about the wait. At 11:50 my sister said she was leaving and did not want to use a doctor that's staff did not care and were rude. I am so disappointed in the way the offices staff and medical staff have changed to not caring. I have been with Dr. Roka for 10 years and have referred my family and friends. My husband and I are looking to change to another primary care doctor that is professional and their staff is a reflection of that. So sad. read more
