Before moving back to the midwest, my local tailor was a man who trained in Milan and spent 50 years in the business. He was perhaps best known for making John Kerry's bespoke suits (and if you've ever seen photos of John Kerry, you know those suits fit his body wonderfully). Getting clothes tailored from him was like a high--and I've been chasing that high all over the region for the last few years. So after being dissatisfied at 4 other tailors in the area, I gave Ojen a shot. I had somehow gotten my hands on an obscenely nice (and expensive) coat, and needed a few nips and tucks here and there. Nothing was necessarily complicated, but the unique construction of the coat meant it needed a gentle hand, particularly around the sleeve buttons, to avoid scarring. The coat of course turned out perfect (hence the rating), but a few other aspects of the experience are notable. Ojen and her co-worker explained every decision to me and walked through exactly what they would do to the coat. They communicated great via text, and also had me try on the coat a couple times throughout the process to make sure the fit was exactly right. They also under-promised and over-delivered on the timeline. While it was not cheap, it was certainly comparable to the other highly-rated tailors in the region. In my experience, Ojen is the best in Ann Arbor, and certainly worth a visit.

When I called on the promised pickup date, I was told it wasn't finished and that she needed more time. I specifically explained that I needed my dress well before my July 12 bridal shower so there would be time to make any necessary adjustments if needed. Instead, I was left dealing with unnecessary stress over a missed deadline. The dress fit me 3x bigger as I bought a bigger size on purpose so that she can alter it accordingly to my body. It zipped and buttoned without any issues. After the alterations, it would no longer zip or button across my upper back. Instead of taking the time to evaluate her work or acknowledge that something may have gone wrong, I was immediately told that I had "gained weight." While poking my back with her finger. That was insulting and completely dismissive. When I returned to discuss the issue, I was hoping for accountability or even a sincere apology. Instead, I received neither. There was no ownership of the situation and no genuine concern for the inconvenience and frustration this caused. Yet I STILL paid. No discount, no sorry, nothing. So I took everything I had given to her prior and will be taking my business, my friends, and family to another business that cares. My advice to anyone considering alterations here is to insist on having your measurements taken with a tape measure in addition to any pinning. My dress was pinned, but no measurements were taken, and after my experience I would not be comfortable relying on pinning alone. When someone trusts you with an important garment especially for a once in a lifetime event they deserve professionalism, clear communication, accountability, and respect. Unfortunately, that was not my experience, and because of that I will not be returning or recommending this business to others.

After walking into the shop, we were promptly greeted and made to feel welcome. After a few temporary tweeks to the jacket, the tux looked 100% better. There was a $100 charge for temporary alterations and pressing, but if you have a position of honor at a gathering the right fitting suit is worth a million bucks. At Bridal Expos and online, you usually get bombarded with the chain Menswear places to do your business with for your wedding day (like I did). The styles at these places were bland and I wanted something different. I stumbled upon Sam Michael's and from my first visit (of probably 5 or 6 in total), I was hooked! Walking in here for the first time, I didn't know what to expected. I explained that I was getting married, and 8 groomsmen and 2 parents that needed suits. I was sat down and shown all of my different rental options, which included suits, tuxes, pants, ties, shoes and other accessories. So many decisions, but I was granted the ability to stay there and think carefully, but also explained to that I can change it as many times as I want up to a month or so before the wedding date. Attached are some pictures of the suit I picked for myself and my groomsmen. It was a brand new suit in their inventory that they personally owned, as well as the color choice for my accents (pocket square and tie). Michael and team were very professional through the entire process. We had multiple texts and phone calls back and forth during my moving of our wedding date as well as when my accent color was discontinued. After the wedding was all said and done, I was granted a $500 shopping spree on a suit set of my choice. That was really exciting and I got a nice blue, checkered patterned suit. Initially the suit was advertised to me as "slightly more expensive" but better quality and service than competitors. After we allocated our wedding finances after we got married, at Sam Michael's, I actually spent LESS than what I budgeted and LESS than a competitor I was initially going to go with. Totally worth it here! Thank you Mike and team for everything! I felt like family every time I walked in. No errors or resizing for any of us during our pick ups.
