They were late getting us the table. We had ordered, they were slow getting the food out and another member of staff came over and told us we needed to order or we'd have to leave. The place was completely disorganised and no one seemed to know what they were doing. When the food finally did arrive it was cold and I'd asked for a coke and got a cup of what tasted like that awful cheap splash cola. They then tried to hustle us out because they'd another booking. Average food, average service, waitress tricked us into purchasing bottled water when we asked for glasses of water. I wasn't aware we had to specify we wanted it from the tap. The vegetarian options aren't great, very bland and boring. Food is expensive for what you end up getting on the plate too. The waitress was also very much on top of us for our whole meal, and not in a friendly way, so it was just weird. I wouldn't even put it down to being that they needed the table and wanted us out of there quick, as we went on midweek around 5pm, and the place was empty bar one other table of 2. I wouldn't be rushing back to this place, but if I had no other options, I'd probably return. read more

Alfie's doesn't look terribly attractive from the outside but once you get past that it's another great lunch option in the city centre. The lunchbox for 10 Euro is a great deal, because you basically get two courses plus a drink and the food is pretty good. I can particularly recommend the Spanish meatballs and the homemade burger- yes, I do like my meat!- but having read Sinead's review I think I'll try the yellow chicken curry next time. The portion sizes are generous and you will leave absolutely stuffed. The restaurant has a lovely relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff so there really are no complaints from me about Alfie's. read more

Alfie's is a conflicting place; on one hand the place is full of lush fabrics and ornate fixtures - but on the other, the tables need a lick of varnish and the menus are wrecked. The staff are very on point & professional, but it took us ages to get served. There were some really unusual flavours through my carrot soup, and the goat's cheese in the salad was gorgeous and strong flavoured, yet the trio of veg tasted like something just out of a Dunnes multi pack. I went in twice - firstly for a late, light lunch and felt the menu was very basic and suuuuuper pricy. I did enjoy it, but soup and a little side salad for 12 was just too much. Then I went in on time for their lunch special which was a trio of little bowls filled with various goodies that you can select from a long list. This was much more impressive. I suppose overall I heartily recommend the place, but only if you make it in before 4pm. read more

Walked by this place dozens of times but decided to have a peek in today. I was nicely surprised for my curiosity. They let you pick 3 items for €10, I went for the fish cakes, veggie thai green curry & a medley of vegetables. Whilst not too impressed with any single one of them, they were all solid efforts and it was nice to have some variety. Staff were very friendly and the place was hopping for lunch time. A long narrow restaurant, it just didn't pack any 'wow' factor that makes you want to definitely come back but if it's a reliable lunch you're after for a decent price, you'll be fine. Myself and a friend were passing through town looking for an outdoor seating area to grab some Wednesday evening dinner but as we had the dogs with us we were limited for choice. As we were passing Alfies she commented on how good their food was and we chanced our arm asking if we could take a quiet corner outside with dogs in tow! The owner was an absolute sweetheart and was delighted to see us settle in and hung around to chat about his own Yorkie whom the restaurant was named after. We got a dinner of chorizo pasta and a bottle of wine which really hit the spot as the dogs snuggled up under the table to snooze off their walk. On a late night trip to the fridge, I once discovered that strawberry jam on chicken noodles works exquisitely well. I wasn't drunk, or pregnant, I simply have a highly sophisticated pallet out reach of most noodle connoisseurs. I'm also rather on the selfish side. I agree with Joey Tribbiani - "Joey doesn't share food!". That, however, does not stop me from wanting a 'taster' of everyone else's... What I'm trying to say is, when I went into Alphie's, and found that I could order peppercorn meatballs, Thai chicken curry, and mashed potato all on the same plate, without having to share, and without fear of being judged, I thought; 'this is the place for me.' The satisfaction of my gluttonous tendencies in a socially acceptable manor, is the main reason I like Alphies. The mashed potatoes were a tad dry, the meatballs were slightly bland although piping hot (it was a cold day!), and the Thai chicken curry was delicious. All in all, for €10 and a €5 cocktail if you really want to push the boat out, it's a guilty pleasure worth taking. Now where's that strawberry jam... read more

Yum, yum, yum! I love Alfie's and all that it serves. The spot it occupies has been a veritable black hole for restaurants over the last number of years, but I hope and pray that this one survives! So far I've only had the pleasure of lunch there, for which they do a great little mix and match menu. It also does a similar styled after work dinner and weekend brunch, which I intend to check out in the future. For lunch you get to choose three items from their 'lunchbox' menu, which includes nachos, yellow chicken curry, homemade burger, penne chicken basil, fish cakes, two kinds of salad, baked potato, homemade chips, rice and a few more goodies. The portion sizes are perfect and you can mix and match to suit your hunger level or health consciousness. Everything I've tried to far has been good, with the nachos and yellow chicken curry taking the lead. The damage is €10 including a soft drink and a lollipop on your way out if you so wish. Fairly quiet at the earlier lunchtime of 12pm, but have never had a problem getting a table at 1pm either, service is quick and very friendly. read more

To summarize, because I know I tend towards wordiness in my Yelp reviews: the service was great, probably the best I've experienced in Dublin, and the vibe was fun; the food, however, was sub-par. When I made a reservation for 6pm at Alfie's, I asked if we could be out by 7:15 to catch a show at the Gaiety; they assured me that this wouldn't be a problem. After a quick reminder of our time constraint upon arrival, our waitress was extremely understanding and our mains came out within ten minutes. Which was great, and we would have been really pleased, had the food been better. I ordered off of the "Bits & Pieces" menu, in which you pick one item from each of three categories; I went for garlic mushrooms, mini tower burgers, and duo of vegetables. The dishes arrive together, attractively displayed on a little wooden cutting board. This is 20 euros, and also comes with a glass of house wine, a pint, or a cocktail. (I went for the house red, a greasy cabernet savignon.) That seems like a pretty good deal, I think. When I asked for the burger to be cooked medium-rare, our (very amiable) waitress told me apologetically that they only came well-done, as, I suppose, they were premade. (Like in McDonald's.) They were uninspired: attractively presented, but tasteless and slightly burnt. The garlic mushrooms were tasty enough -- they're smothered in garlic and butter and deep-fried, so I would certainly hope so. The vegetables (broccoli and carrots, if I remember correctly) were drenched in butter, which annoyed me: if I'm trying to order a side of vegetables, they should taste like vegetables. All in all: five stars for the service. After our mains, we even had time for dessert and tea before we had to leave to catch our show. The two waiters we dealt with were friendly and professional, and when the manager came over and chatted for a bit, he was extremely personable (and gave me and my mother an excellent book recommendation). Like I said: best service I've gotten in Dublin. The food, however, is two-star material. Also: there's not actually a possessive apostrophe in "Alfies", which greatly irked my father. When the manager came over, my dad -- of course -- asked about the missing punctuation. Evidently the logo was taken from a movie made in the '60s, which... okay. (My father was unimpressed.) So, I dunno, if you care about that sort of thing, there's a data point. read more

So I'm out again to eat for the second night in a row and the first venue is poo-poo'd because someone doesn't like Thai food. Oh well. So Alfies is mooted and after a quick look at their set menu for 14.95 EUR, it's settled. Now the name is familiar and the font used in the signage even more so, but I just couldn't tell you where this place is... but I know I've passed it plenty of times.... oh yeah, South William Street! It's not surprising, the street is full of eating houses. Up the stairs and the place is full of framed posters from the movie Alfie, both movies that is. There is also lots of framed pictures of a Yorkshire Terrier who I can only assume is called Alfie as well. The music was a good mix of classics with some current chart hits. We settle at one of the high tables and peruse the set menu, which has three categories and you have to pick one item from each. (There is also a regular menu of individual meals with individual prices). I went for the nachos, mini beef burger and fries. The burger was a really nice size, girl size. And it was yum to, as were the fries. The nachos however was a bowlful of oily chili, too much melted cheese and a few nachos put on top. If I were Alfies I would use more nachos, putting them at the bottom of the bowl, then spoon some chili and a bit of cheese on top. Emphasis on the word some. All in all the food was grand for the price, it was good value. We also got a platter of canapes before our meal and two great big slices cake after it to celebrate Alfies third birthday (the business I assume and not the dogs). This was jolly nice of them and a good touch. We all ordered cocktails too, from the 5 EUR menu. I got a cosmopolitan and for the price it was well good. They also have more cocktails at a price of 8 EUR. So for the above meal and two cocktails (that weren't half bad), it came to 25 EUR per head. Good value in my book. Was wandering around the southside yesterday searching for a primo combination: outside terrace in the sunshine, decent cocktails, and cheap prices. After a complete dud at Break for the Border, I ended up at Alfie's thanks to a giant '€5 cocktails' sign in the front window. They have a €5 and an €8 cocktail menu as well as a decent wine list, including some Chilean wines I recognised. I had the Eclipse (gin, grenadine, lemon) and the GT&T (G&T with triple sec). Both were excellent. Extra star because hubs dropped in later and asked for an Old Fashioned. Although it wasn't on the menu, the waiter confirmed it was made with whiskey, sugar, bitters, water, and an orange rind. I was predicting disaster simply because the bartender had to ask. Maybe it was a fluke but it came out excellent! A tall pour, too. I haven't tried the food. Some nearby tables did and it didn't look too amazing. Only thing I noticed were the chips looked nice--golden + crispy shoestring fries. read more

Pleasant place for a "tenner-value" lunch. The ambiance is fair enough. We were seated at high-top tables, which I generally dislike. It was actually an awkward place to sit, as it was in a high-traffic area. Still, in spite of servers/managers walking by every minute, I didn't feel our conversation was compromised. For a tenner, at lunch time, you can get this lunch box. They serve all 3 courses at once and it comes with a mineral. Our mineral was very very flat, we had to ask for another. In doing so, you could see them pouring it out of a two litre bottle. They had no issue fixing this issue, so fair enough. So far, it would seem like it was a dismal eating experience. But it wasn't. The food itself was good. The wings that I ordered, the portion was hearty enough. Granted, I had to pay an extra 3 Euro for it . On that, I dislike early-bird or equivalent menus where they have so-called premium options. I think that's counter to the concept. The steak sandwich was lovely. It was slices of steak on a thick piece of bread, that was nicely toasted. The third course were chips. Chips are chips, these were decent enough. Not too soggy, not too crispy, and quite thick. A terribly generic bar with below average over priced cocktails. My latest trip was the Friday before Christmas. I ordered a Heineken and it tasted like dish water. I ordered an expensive Old Fashioned and it was served to me in about 2 minutes. I knew it would be bad and it was. Bleurgh. I have had food here before and it's not bad. Well talk about customer service this place needs to send most of their staff on a long course ! We where upstairs for drinks and food . Staff threw menu at our table and walked off , not a great start . Ordered drinks beers and cocktail, draft beer very limited on draft that's disappointing for a bar . High priced as well . Got prawns which where like rubber, I wasn't even giving a knife and fork ! Staff are so so rude , couldn't eat the prawns . To top it off there is obviously no age policy at door as was surrounded by under age girls taking selfies and drinking , for sure underage ! Definetly wouldn't recommend ! read more

Really nice food. 2 of us went there for lunch hour during work and the place was half full but very clean looking. They must have recently got a facelift. We ordered 2 meals @€10 each. I got a chicken burger, chips and a vanilla shake. Herself got a chicken tandoori. Both were very tasty although the burger was quiet small (but yummy) Service was good and fast delivery of food. From the outside, this place looks like a nightclub. With the owner as the "bouncer" asking odd questions about if we've had anything to drink today or acting like he isn't worth our time, we quickly became uncomfortable but we're rushed in by him and other workers. Surrounding guests also seemed to be confused and were telling us he's the owner. Once seated, our experience was rushed and simply put rude. Our server expected us to order immediately, and when we asked questions, she decided to move to another table and we had to flag her down to finish our order. From slamming water on our table to talking poorly about us to other staff, we were feeling overwhelmed and unwelcome. They don't tell you that you must order food AND drink until you've already decided on one or the other. The food was less than average, and the cocktails were overly priced for the service given. Met girlfriend in town and had this place in mind, I had seen the €14 lunch offer online and was intrigued. Staff seemed OK, decor was fine comfortable enough surroundings. Took a look at the menu, not totally into ethnic dishes in a non-ethnic restaurant, always think that the craft just wouldn't be there. Girlfriend got Fish Cakes and Chicken Noodles, I went for the Fish Cakes and "Homemade" Burger. Alfie's insist on bringing everything not only together...but on the same plate...so we had Fish Cakes on the same plate as Chicken Noodles and "Homemade" Burger...bit strange... On first sight, it was plain to see that the chef's role in this dish was fairly limited. Fish cakes seemed mass produced, not dissimilar to versions I have purchased previously in well known and very cheap supermarkets. Not impressed. The "Homemade" Burger was perhaps the biggest disgrace I have ever come across. If said "home" takes the form of a mass producing low grade beef burger factory, then perhaps i could concede that this burger was in fact homemade. However, this burger was a disgrace, i couldn't believe any self respecting establishment would serve this up, cheap, cheap burger bun with a cheap, cheap mass produced burger inside. Shamelessly, taking the complete mickey out of the customer! I was astounded as to why a nice enough establishment would stoop to serving food that 9/10 chip vans on the street could easily better. OK, the noodles had on the other side of the table were average at best...however, everything was undermined due to the fact that this food had a distinct air of supermarket freezer compartment written all over it. I would have had no problem paying up to €10 extra for PROPER food. Hello? Alfie's why are you devaluing yourselves like this? Best of luck anyway, I certainly will not be returning. read more

I went for lunch at Alfie's with a friend who has a son by that name. So, we were primed to like this place. The attentive service, good-looking clientele, and gorgeous decor (including a very nice and clean WC downstairs) set the stage. Unfortunately, though, the food really let us down. Lunch was cheap at 10 euros, but decidedly mediocre (essentially what you might expect from pub food - and not a gastropub either). I would much rather pay a bit more for something a lot better. And easier to order and to eat... The lunch menu was confusing and over-reaching. You can select 1 dish from each of 3 categories, but they don't naturally complement one another. Even our server couldn't help my friend pick one from the third category that would go with the first two! Furthermore, each choice is served in a small wooden bowl that rolls around such that it's almost impossible to cut - or eat! - the food. The Chinese "parcels" were OK - essentially small egg rolls on mixed greens. The BBQ chicken salad was topped with two onion rings that were delicious, but the BBQ sauce came on the side, which may have been a good thing because the sauce really wasn't very good. The veg were what you might expect for Sunday dinner - steamed broccoli and carrots and mashed potatoes all stuffed in the same small bowl (whereas I'd rather keep my veg separate.) Everything was cooked properly but nothing revolutionary. Alfie's lunch menu could easily go from good to great by narrowing down the choices, focusing on a few of the best and most complementary dishes, and serving just two such dishes on a conventional plate. It would take just such a new menu and/or chef to get me back for a sequel. read more

We arrived here at 8.30 last Saturday night. It was very busy, and the hostess said that there would be an hours wait, but that there was a bar upstairs where we could have a drink. The bar was cosy with nice decor and 5 euro cocktails (though all that I tried were pretty light on alcohol, but for 5 euro what do you expect?) The hostess came back for us a half hour later, and we were shown to our table. The menu has a nice variation - something for everyone. I wasn't terribly impressed with the food though - it was very average. I think some items (such as the guacamole) came from a jar. The service was very good for a busy Saturday night - wine, food, water all served without a delay. The bill was 96 euro - this included : the mixed sampler to share as a starter, 2 mains, a bottle of wine, 1 dessert, 1 coffee and 1 more glass of wine. A pretty good deal. I will probably go back, but it wouldn't be my first choice in an area of town with so many other options. read more

I thought that the service was superb. The young waitress did a great job with our large boisterous party. The hostess stopped by a lot to check in on us. Interior is trying to invoke the warm 1950's movie star haunts of the States. I just stuck with a main and get the vegetable skewers on a mixed salad of baby potatoes and pesto type dressing. It was really tasty and very light. The rest of the group embraced the meat and the portions are huge, afterwards they all groaned and held their bellies in gluttonous guilt. Since I just ate like a rabbit I was exempt... I have eaten vegetarian options that are hearty and that was the only option I could see on the menu - so maybe they should revisit that. 4 stars if you are a meat eater. Wine list seemed impressive as did the cocktails but I just splurged on sparkingly water - I'm so rockstar. read more

Stumbled into Alfie's last Saturday morning in search of a coffee and breakfast to satisfy a little hangover. It wasn't our first choice as it happens, the preferred spot being full to the brim that morning. As places go it's a bit unusual in terms of decor and what's on offer. There's little or no daylight with most tables in the back of the building towards the kitchen and seems to operate as a kind of cocktail bar by night. I had a hankering for a greasy start so I went for the full Irish and was assured it was really good. And so it was! It was huge but also made with quality stuff which is good going for €11 in Dublin 2. Coffee was bang on and the service was great. They're offering an unusual Brunch Box menu between 12pm and 3pm where you get to choose 1 item from each of 3 categories for €14. Options range from garlic mushrooms to buffalo mozerrella salad to strawberries in cream. Brilliant if you're feeling like picking at a bunch of things or just can't make up your mind. Will quite possibly be back to give it a whirl. read more

I was looking forward to going to this place as my colleagues had gone her before and told me good things and the reviews on Yelp were not too horrible but I was disappointed. We were a big group, I had reserved spots for 12 people but last minute we became 13, I thought no big deal, it is just one more chair but apparently this was of much annoyance to the staff. Already the mood was set for the evening. The staff was rude and unwilling to cooperate. They did not allow us one extra chair for our party and that is NOT an exaggeration. Luckily we had one side which was made of benches and some of the people in my group where small enough to make room for one extra person, so we made it work and we after asking twice, got an extra plate and a glass. Who would have thought that one more person in their restaurant would be such an inconvenience? Especially when the restaurant was not even full. The food was not great either, it had been overrated by both Yelpers and colleagues. I ordered the vegetarian nacho's as a starter and the Lamb Shank. Vegetarian Nacho's: The chips came from a bag and was not home made, very disappointing. The cheese which normally goes on top of the chips where put on a side dish with veggies. It tasted alright but it was a bit too greasy and not what I expected, so that disappointed me too. For the chips there were also creme fresh/sour creme and guacamole. The sour creme was good but the guacamole, like the chips, were store bought, either not made by fresh avocados or not even avocados at all. Even the vegetarian option for nacho's were the same price as if you had ordered beef with the nacho's - rip off at 8 Euros for bad nacho's. Lamb Shank: I love lamb and I like the earthy taste that lamb has but not only was the lamb a bit flavorless it was also too fatty so most of the shank was fat and not even meat. The little meat that was on there was so fatty I lost my appetite. With the Lamb Shank was mashed potatoes with a rosemary gravy and veggies (according to the menu there was supposed to be a trio of veggies but all I got was carrots - again very disappointing). The mashed potatoes were alright and where what you can expect from mashed potatoes but what shined in this dish was the gravy, it was actually delicious. Unfortunately that was the only delicious thing about the dish. I know 17 Euros is a good price in Ireland but unfortunately the chef seemed to ruin a delicious cut of meat. The only reason I give this place a 2* is because of the gravy and the vegetarian options, they even have a separate menu should you be vegetarian. But for what I ate and the price it is not more than a 1* for me. read more

Went here for Sunday lunch. We went with the Lunch Box menu, in which one chooses a starter, main and side (along with a soft drink) for €10. The starter and main course are served together... this bothers some people, but I didn't mind in the slightest. Garlic Mushrooms alongside a steak sandwich is fine by me:-) And my sisters fish cakes really complimented the Thai Red curry, lol. The food was well presented, but as one would expect for €10, basic enough. What knocked off a star from my review is the fact that Alfies has a bit of a claustrophobic feeling to it, especially if you are right down the back on a nice day (would be fine at night), as its long dark and narrow. First time here last night and have to say was pretty impressed! The bar upstairs was incredibly loud and some people were eating here, so when our table was called I was pretty happy that it was downstairs in the restaurant. The atmosphere was nice and buzzy, and the service was great. I ordered camembert to start - really nice, good portion but a little cold in the middle. The only downside to the meal. My partner ordered scallops - expensive for two but so tasty that they were worth every penny. Bonus: they came sitting on black pudding! My main was the symphony of seafood - prawns, scallops, fillet of salmon & a fishcake. Seafood usually inst filling but there was the perfect portion to leave me feeing stuffed. We ordered garlic potatoes between us expecting dauphinoise, but they were actually a patatas alioli which was fine [was still craving some creamy garicky spuds afterwards though!]. The other main was lamb shank which was equally as delicious. Desserts were cocktails [naturally!] and there's a large selection in Alfies for a great price [ranging from €5-€10 with lots in the lower bracket[. Loooove this place! Chicken wings to rival the infamous elephant and castle in temple bar, and I can't say iv ever had a bad meal here and working just across the street I eat here quite alot and have made my way through most of the menu! The staff are always friendly and attentive and came to recognize me quite quickly. You can never go wrong with their €5 mijito's and the value for money on their lunch deals is fantastic. Have brought my friends and parents here an all of them left with smiles on their faces. I am by no means a regular at Alfies, but I've been there on a number of occasions for lunch & the early bird & absolutely loved the style of their food. I loved the 3 platters coming at once, I loved the reasonably priced cocktails and I loved the quality of the food we were served each time we were there. So natually when a girls night came up for me recently I recommended Alfies for all the things I had experienced before. We were told when we booked that we only had the table for 2 hours, which is great notice to be able to plan accordingly. Firstly when we arrived in it was too dark to see the menu. I kid you not, one friend with particularly questionable eyesight at the best of times had to turn her back to the table completely in order to get some of the light from our little tealight candle onto her Menu in order to read it. We laughed this off anyway, made a bit of a joke with the waitor & proceeded to order. A cocktail each while we decided what food we wanted, absolutely flawless but slow to be served (which is fine, they make them up from scratch). For starters I ordered the soup of the day (spicy tomatoe soup). It was quite tasty but came with crutons in it, which no one had mentioned, and as someone who is intolerant to wheat this didn't suit me. Pulling crutons out of soup is messy business but they were quite big so it was difficult to eat around them. For mains I ordered BBQ spare ribs which was to come with chips & onion rings. Onion rings were delicious, chips were delicious. BBQ sauce was delicious. Rib left a lot to be desired. They were fatty, gristly, not very easy to eat & I had to resort to picking them up by the bone to eat them. Which is fine for a BBQ but restaurant standard ribs should come off the bone easy enough! I mean when I cook them at home the come off the bone easy enough! After our mains we waited a VERY long time for our plates to be collected. One waitor asked where we done & when we replied yes he still didn't bother to take the plates away! When they did evenutally take our plates away they didn't come with a dessert Menu, we had to ask for one. We then, 20 minutes later, had to ask someone to take our dessert order. I had the Oreo Cheese Cake, which is delish as always but my friends ordered something along the lines of an eton mess and was described on the menu as having "mixed berries". My friends got 5 berries between 2 of them. The rest of the dessert was just whipped cream & mirangue. At the end as we were paying the waiter who served us (who by the way was so so charming) asked how our desserts were. My friend explained that she was disappointed with her dessert since there were so few berries & his response was simply "yeah, I would have ordered the brownie or oreo cheesecake"... All in all, if that was my first visit to Alfies I would not be returning. & in fact I will never return for dinner. But lunches are great so don't avoid it completely on this account! read more

A lovely place on a street full of places to eat, dont be put off by the name, Alfies is a classy place with some comfortable outside seats and a lovely space inside for dining. We had the brunch special which is a great concept but a bit pricey, 12 euros and you select your 3 different dishes, which arrive on one platter, i had bacon, burger and fries - it was fancy but tasted great. I love alfies you cant go wrong. the staff are lovely they really look after you and there is a peaceful relaxed atmosphere i love. the food has always been good for me and quick. I normally am there for lunches or after work nibbles! read more
