Purchased an apple crumb pie pie was soggy and apples were not peeled .skins were chewy and uneatable.

Disappointing experience with the pastry and cookies I purchased from Alfonso's this past Saturday evening. I went with both types of St. Joseph's pastry and both were stale. The French crème was past its prime while the shell was soft as if it was in the refrigerator for several days. The cannoli filling on the other was very good but the shell was not fresh. The 7 layer cookies were ok, definitely can use more jelly filling. I have had Alfonso's pastries before and they were very good....not sure where they went wrong. 2 stars for service only. I ordered a half sheet cake for my daughter's engagement party. I went to pick it up and they finally found it about 15 minutes later. Well, went to the party and as we were cutting we noticed my daughters name was misspelled. But even worse we ordered whipped cream instead of butter cream. As we cut the but I noticed it was butter cream. So I called to complain today and was told there was nothing the "manager" could do because I 'signed' for it. She asked me why I didn't bring it right back and I asked her if she was going to have another one ready in 5 minutes ??? Also we had the cake at the end of the party like most people do so I didn't know until then. She could have offered me a plate of cookies or some compensation but all she kept repeating was "sorry. you signed for it !!!! Very surprised by my recent experience with Alfonso's. It was my first time at this location, having purchased at the Victory Boulevard location for years. On Sunday I purchased two cakes to bring to a party. I specifically asked the person helping me if the cakes had been made that day and was told yes. Imagine my embarrassment when it turned out that one of the cakes was stale! Every person who tried it could taste it at their first bite. We called the store and were told that they close that day at 5. I was not going to leave the party to bring a stale cake back but it is unlikely that I will purchase from there again! I gave this review 2 stars because the other cake was very good, however, this did not offset the horrendous quality of the other. Quite a disappointment! read more

Keep in mind this location is associated to the location that got shut down by the DOH and currently has a B grade according to yelp. I was at a family members house who had a few "fresh" cakes and pies from one of Alfonso's locations, not sure which one but I was a bit hesitant to eat any of it due to their history. I figured why the hell not and just give them a try and of course I had to find an issue with both of them. Cake #1 which was in a napoleon style was great tasting until I found that the crumbled garnish was nothing more than just old crumbled napoleons. They sprinkled extra powdered sugar over the top to cover the green mold on the garnish. Cake #2 was an apple pie with crumb on top. Once again moldy crumb covered with a generous layer of powdered sugar. Nice. It seems like they should check the freshness of their product more often and not try to cover it up with powdered sugar. read more

I called them to let them know and the manager had an awful attitude. When I explained that they were past she told me that I needed to bring them in. What was I supposed to do collect them off of the plates and take them from our guest so that I could bring them back? How embarrassing is that! Without question, the best Italian pastries on Staten Island: rainbow cookies, sfagitelle, sfingi, cannoli filled to order and chocolate covered, lobster claws, cream puffs (whipped and cannoli cream filled) lace cookies, rhum au baba are but a few of the standards the family orders for holidays. Also like that they offer minis, so you can try more without wrestling a loved one to the ground. Father's Day '14 was no exception, the items tasted were as delicious as I recall. Their cakes and holiday specials are also standouts: particularly Cassata, Easter pie varieties, St Joseph's pastry and struffoli. "American" pies and cakes are good, too. You can't go wrong. Sometimes we take a culinary journey into our past and are disappointed: never the case here. I am utterly disappointed and disgusted with the service I received on Sunday as well as the sprinkle cookies I purchased! If you want to eat butter than I highly recommend purchasing these tasteless cookies, that were burnt and stale! The worst sprinkle cookies I've ever ate in my life! 25lbs a pound for pure butter, stale and burnt cookies! The jelly inside had absolutely no flavor what so ever! The cookies were so badly burnt on both sides you could t even eat one. They went right in the garbage! The girl who took care of me was no better! Rude! She was in a rush for what? There was no line! They have tons of girls working in there and rushing every customer! When I told her what else I wanted she left the box open on the display! Who does that during these times? My husband brought home a lemon meringue pie today. I love lemon meringue but DO NOT BUY IT HERE. Terrible - the meringue was hard and crunchy and crumbly, the lemon had a very unpleasant bite. This pie should have been tossed into the trash instead of selling it to a sucker trying to make his wife happy. More times than not we received stale products from here. It's a shame that this place earned a one star review from me since I have been going to Alfonso's since I was a boy and they were first doing business on Manor Road. I'll still go to the Victory Blvd. location when I'm on that side of the island, but this place is so poorly stocked that they run out of buns, donuts, and rolls within hours of opening up. I stopped in there for the last time today at 11am on a Sunday to be told by the young girl behind the counter to "wake up earlier" next time. They don't bake at this location, they get their delivery from "another" location. There was only one person in the store when I entered and I left to go to another bakery nearby in Annadale. That bakery had a line out the door! Hmmmm... I wonder why? Like I said, it's a shame. read more

I've been wanting to try their 7 layer donut and crumb cake for a while and finally the day has come. The 7 layer crumb cake was so moist and fresh, it had a little more jelly than I liked for personal preference but it was still AMAZING! The 7 layer donut was like a giant 7 layer cookie and so good. The layers were moist and dense dipped into chocolate, the chocolate layer on the outside was evenly layered, a little too thick for me but that didn't stop me from eating the whole thing. Awesome place! It was my first visit to Staten Island and this place just had a good vibe the second I saw it. People were lining up for their last minute Thanksgiving dinner shopping. The shop handled the crowd well and managed to serve the freshest baked goods. Their bread, cake and cookies were fresh and delicious! Highly recommended! Alfonso's used to be an amazing bakery. Just yesterday we picked up my sons Rainbow Cookie Cake that I ordered the week prior. I have had some very good cakes over the years but this cake was absolutely inedible. Hard in texture, holes in the actual layers, we couldn't even cut it properly. I called this morning and was told that they actually do premake the layers and I was assured that if I brought the cake and the box back they would do anything to make me happy. Although it was an inconvenience, the cake and box were brought back only to be told that there was nothing wrong with the cake - they literally squeezed the cake as they laughed. They offered a store credit of 50% of my original cost. Terrible customer service. There are so many amazing bakeries on Staten Island to choose from. Solid Italian-American style bakery that makes a variety of items from Italian bread to apple pie. I love this place and have been coming here for 20 years for everything from their semolina bread, to pastries and variety of cheesecakes. Another recommendation is their apple pie, made with cheese, it's delicious. Alfonzo's follows the tradition of Brooklyn bakeries, and is one of the only ones left on S.I. Luckily they have many locations. I can't recommend this place more, unless you have a bunch of cavities, you got to visit. read more

I believe in trying cupcakes anywhere I see them offered. It's one of those things I must do -- even right before my wedding, I was eating cupcakes more than the average person. I saw they served cupcakes here and my family wanted to introduce my now husband to some traditional Italian cookies. We bought a cookie platter (heavy on the cannolis) and three cupcakes. Red Velvet is my go to cupcake. Any bakery worth a damn will try to make a top notch red velvet. The combination is classic, the recipe can seem simple. Well, this cupcake was terrible. The cake was dense, poorly mixed, overly sweet. The frosting was sickeningly sweet. We couldn't finish this cupcake because it was so terrible. Oreo wasn't any better. It took three people to try to even put a dent in that cupcake. It was horrendous. The cake was just as dense and extra sweet (with NO MOISTURE) the red velvet but the frosting was worse, if you can imagine. It's a dense, extra sweet frosting that requires CHEWING. I'm serious. I wish I could forget eating it. The only reason I give them two stars instead of one star is because their cookies were OK. I'm not jumping for joy about them -- I've had WAY better -- but they were OK. Do yourself a favor -- save your money. read more

What makes this place a local gem is the fact that they have traditional Italian pastries that taste the way they are supposed to taste! The best ever here are the rainbow cookies. It seems that it is so hard to get rainbow cookies that taste the way they used to in this area. They are often too sweet and flooded with raspberry jelly. But not here! These rainbow cookies are perfect - no skimping on the marzipan and made with the PERFECT amount of orange jelly. This place also has awesome cannolies and chocolate cannolies as well. Their other wares such as their sun-dried tomato bread and other breads are worth a try as well. I always make it a point to come here at least once when I visit.
