I'm not happy with the cut I got there. I wish I'd trusted my instincts and walked away. It was snap decision I really regret. I showed the stylist a beautiful picture of the direction I wanted to go (Felicia Day's pixie) and shared some very specific concerns I had. She ignored everything I asked her to do and even dismissed me when I tried to redirect her a few times. I essentially asked for a clean up on my pixie and the lady went whole hog and hacked off pretty much all my hair. I grew my hair out after chemo and this place took MONTHS of growth, all because the stylist thought and said "well if it were just a trim it wouldn't have been worth MY time." Really? Not worth YOUR time? Why oh why did I NOT follow my instincts??? Rather than getting a sweet Felicia pixie I ended up with Boys Don't Cry. Fab. By the time I realized what was happening there was nothing I could do except let her finish. I was very polite and tipped extremely well. I couldn't even look in the mirror until the following day when I got home. This cut is so bad I don't even want to leave my house. I am near tears. I should have trusted my instincts. I hope at least I can steer others away from this horrible, horrible place. :( Or at least leave you with the message: ALWAYS TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!!! Umm im not sure how to feel about this place. My experience is only based of one stylist so it does not represent every stylist. I have thick textlaxed hair that I take care of myself and have managed to grow longer than its ever been by myself how ever ive been searching for a salon i can go to for touch ups and blowouts. I find that everytime I go to stylists they end up never telling me what they are doing to my hair and are too rough and don't try taking their time to detangle it. My time here was no different. My stylist was very rude, didn't really acknowledge me and also didn't tell me what he was doing step by step as I would get at a professional salon. He racked through my hair with a cheap paddle brush and did not even try to go in small sections and try to help me lose an less hair as possible. I got the vibe that he had no time to care about taking care of my hair and wanted to get me out of the chair as soon as possible. I paid for a $40 Groupon to try out this place to see if I could find a salon in the city worth making the trip from RI for on a monthly basis. My stylist also lacked professionalism and went on about what issues I had with my hair in a rude and condescending manner. Now to top it off I had agreed to a trim and ended up with a cut that will take at least a yr to grow back. I was told this would be an extra $10 and ended up paying $15 which isn't a huge difference but I would prefer some integrity when stating prices. Overall if u have thick hair or actually care about growing ur hair long and strong ...go to brooklyn and find a respectable stylist that will give u proper advice and who is up to date on how to properly care for black hair. If you are getting color ...the other stylists didn't seem as bad as mine so u may have luck here. read more

In Lower Manhattan, it is so rare to find a salon with an unpretentious and homey feel. That's Alfredo Ray. You can tell the stylists have been together for years and most of the customers have been going for just as long. I've been going for months now and I always get a warm welcome when I come in. They do a variety of types of hair (read: they do caucasian and ethnic hair), they do styling, coloring, and deep conditioning. There's really a variety. I've been to Alfredo Ray to see Mary for a Cezanne treatment twice. Both times I was extremely pleased with the results. I've had several disastrous treatments done at various salons, so I know how risky it can be. Some stylists use heat that is too intense for my hair, or they don't apply enough product. Mary adapted the application to my hair type, which definitely shows in the way my hair took to the treatment. I'm really happy with the results and can't recommend her enough! read more

Alfredo is amazing with color and Gina does a beautiful job at cutting my hair, always! I will never go anywhere else. it was hard to find really, really good stylists in NY. My hair is long, curly and thick and the NY weather made my hair dark, there is no sun compared to CA. After many, many attempts at going to really expensive and known places and having my hair put through the ringer which resulted in bad color jobs and many tears, I found these wonderful people around the corner from work. I don't think I can do justice in this review but I'll do my best and be plain -- I am 22 years old and have NEVER EVER chose to see other hairstylists or professionals other than Mary and Gina at Alfredo Ray for the last 18 years of my life. Mary Cruz has been making me feel beautiful and stylish as well as any of Manhattan's elite salons without the fuss or muss but all the glamour and warmth. All of the professionals at this establishment know how to make you feel so special and are expert at understanding the look and style you are going for --- and with an amazing team, there is definitely someone for your specific needs here at Alfredo Ray. I was born and raised in Manhattan and even having lived in 5 different states over the last decade, I will PURPOSELY fly home to the city so I can see Mary at Alfredo Ray Salon for what I know will be the perfect haircut and styling every time. Over the years I have never failed to notice the entire team's commitment furthering education and knowledge of current industry standards as well - which is why they are so well qualified and up to date on techniques to really make you look your best and in a modern setting as well. My experience with Alfredo at the Alfredo Ray Salon was not a good one. Alfredo is a chubby older man who often got winded while walking around the chair. He often seemed to lose track of what he was doing and the color came out horrible and unbalanced. I also made the mistake of going with his color recommendation which didn't suit my completion and I had to go to another salon which ended up doing a much better job for less money. I have been a customer for 13 years at Alfredo Ray Salon. I have never been treated so well at any other hair salon. All of the staff are incredibly proficient, talented, friendly, accomodating, and patient. I receive so many compliments on my hair color which is done at the salon and my hair cut and style. It is a very friendly and competent hair salon, and very fleixible. I feel very welcomed there and I have rarely been treated so well. I have moved out of the Chelsea area and even though I a am now living in the Union Square area, I am still a very loyal and satisfied customer. I went in with a bad case of super fried blonde with black roots. Wanted to get the roots re done blonde and they had the honest but difficult talk - telling me it could not be done as the hair would break off where the old blonde met the new blonde - I was ready to just walk out - but they took the conversation all the way around - taking a quick assessment of my vibe and gave me a super cool alternative that I hadn't thought of - so now I am black to electric blue ombre (manic panic to cover blonde and protect hair during the grow out period) !!! The feedback has been amazing - I would never have considered it on my own. Then Mary gave me a super cool cut - sheared in the back with long pieces on the front. This was supposed to be a temporary color option while my hair grew out a bit longer - but I'm thinkin I may just keep it!! Thanks all and glad I put myself in the hands of proessionals. I visited Alfredo Ray Salon last week during a visit from California. I am natural with extremely curly hair. I am always concerned on whether or not the stylist is equipped to deal with my texture and the amount of hair I have. Needless to say I was extremely pleased. Alfredo who is the colorist did an amazing job on my highlights. He gives you a consultation and makes sure to tell you if your hair is strong enough to withstand the process. You can tell he really knows what he's talking about. Kristina is a really amazing assistant and she massaged my scalp with hands from heaven. Darryl did my blowout, flat iron, trim, and added curls. I literally walked out looking like a completely different person. The only complaint I have was that it was a little pricey. I do think it was worth it tho. I do not waste my time writing a reviews unless I feel the service I've received is very very poor or amazing. Alfredo Salon is worth a moment of praise. Please bare with me because feel a little context is due in order to understand my review fully. About two months ago, I began the hunt for a new hair dresser to take the place of my beloved Rose. Rose was already retired when she started doing my hair and she did my hair, along with a hand full of others, because she wanted to. Her clients would come from as far as Delaware to see her. I'd been spoiled so much by Rose that I swore the standards were too high when I began my search. Rose OWNED my hair. If I went to her for a touch up and she felt it was too soon she would not do it. I once showed up for a wash and set and after examining my hair she turned me away because she didn't want to dry out my scalp -like I said, Rose OWNED my hair. Many hair dressers will do whatever you want even if at the end of the day they know it will not be good for your hair. Rose told me the first time I sat in her chair that she is all about the health of the hair. I am telling you about Rose to help illustrate how impossible it has been to find someone or a salon to match all that Rose gave. As a result, I am extremely picky about who I allow to touch me hair. I moved a year ago and I thought going natural was a good alternative to getting to know a new hair dresser. It turns out natural is not for me. I found Alfredo Ray Salon after doing a lot of research. Every dresser I came across I researched online and reached out to the people who reviewed the service if I could. I read a review about Alfredo Ray Salon that was good, not great, but I got interested. I poked around and people had nice things to say. I saw there was a groupon for their service and I took it because I would not feel bad losing out on $35 bucks. I set my appointment on Tuesday. They are not open on Sundays or Mondays. The Salon called me earlier on the day of my appointment to confirm it and they were very professional on the phone. Let me just say, from the second I walked in the salon, I was happy to be there. I saw this beautiful kind looking man conducting the action in this small space. I did not need to wait for a chair because they were waiting for me. He asked me how I wanted my things attended to (I had on a bulky sweater on and it could have been hung or folded) and I was thankful for the his consideration. Darryl was my hair dresser and before he took a comb to my hair we talked. He expressed an understanding for how hard natural hair is to care for (I know this is not a fact for some women but it's a fact for me) and he asked me about what I liked about my pre-natural look. I showed him a picture of my myself when my hair was in tip top shape and he got to work. He and I vibed very well and before I knew it my hair was relaxed. My hair felt good and healthy. He didn't over process my hair at all. Some people love to keep the relaxer in until you feel the it start to burn (I would run from dresser who advocate that), Darryl did not. My hair came out straight but it still has body. His between session practice for me was simple and inexpensive. Now, is Darryl my Rose? No. There is only one Rose. However, he cares and understands his job. He made me feel at ease with the process of transforming my hair. Is Alfredo Ray Salon My new salon? I believe so. I like working with people and businesses with heart and this place has that. I am hoping that my relationship with Alfredo Ray will be a long one.
