It has now been about a month, and despite giving plenty of time for a reply, I have been ignored. Updating my review: I used to come here because the haircuts were strong, but over time the experience deteriorated significantly. Appointments became rushed, started late, and lacked even basic professionalism. You're barely greeted when you walk in, and the overall tone makes it feel like you're inconveniencing them just by being there. I told them multiple times I had a head injury from a concussion and the lack of care was very concerning how abrasively they washed and handled my head. My most recent appointment was a complete failure. I asked for a warm, golden brown and came prepared with multiple reference photos. While the color was processing, I clearly flagged that it was pulling purple. That concern was dismissed, and the product was left on longer. The result was the darkest my hair has ever been, almost black with a cool, purple hue. The exact opposite of what I requested. The color job is all mismatched, the lower part of my hair significantly darker, the roots are sloppy and uneven. When I pointed this out, the response was defensive and dismissive. At one point, I was sarcastically asked if I wanted to "bleach it," which is an inappropriate and careless suggestion for already fine hair. It was mind blowing to have this handled so poorly and then be rushed through a cut that does not look anywhere close to the quality of the past cuts. I followed up requesting a refund, given that this will take months to correct and fade, and received no response for over 48 hours. It's not even about the money - it's about the severe lack of respect. What's most surprising is that this level of defensiveness and lack of accountability was unacceptable, especially after such a grave mistake. Instead of thoughtful adjustment and ownership, the response was dismissive in the moment and silent afterward. Mistakes happen. How they're handled is what defines a business. This was not handled well. NYC has no shortage of salons that can deliver both technical skill and professionalism. This is not one of them. This is based on the Mio essential head spa service I received. This was more like 3 1/2 stars however I'll bump it to 4 just because the service itself was very good. I have been obsessively watching head spa videos on YouTube but they were in different countries so I started to do some research in my area and this was one I found exactly where I was going to be that day with availability so I jumped on it. I always really look into things however I got overly excited. I walked into the nice looking space and saw robes hanging and lockers and thought I was going to change for my service however they just told me to put my stuff in the locker and I walked into an elevated open pergola inside the hair salon and I was already turned off. The girl who took care of me, Sakiyo, was very sweet but very soft-spoken and had to ask her to speak up over the hair dryers going. She showed me a brochure and walked me through what she would be doing and asked what type of hair I have, what scent I would like for oil and what type of pressure I like. I made my selections and she went through everything that was listed of what would be done without saying a word which I really appreciated. She was phenomenal taking her time and applying a strong pressure like I requested. The headrest of where I was, was heated perfectly to ease the aches I had which I hadn't told her about. The only thing that would have made this just about perfect would be if it was in a private room as the blower and the general noise and chatter of the salon were almost constant throughout the entire process which was an hour. After she completed the spa portion, we headed to a chair where she asked me if I'd like water or hot tea and then she began to untangle my hair which seemed like she was overwhelmed with because it's very long and curly and with all the scrubbing it got very tangled. She used a diffuser on the dryer to lightly dry it as was stated and it was done in about another 25 minutes. Overall I feel this service at $150 was grossly expensive and the fact I was not informed I would have to pay extra for using a card and taxes until after I booked. When I got home I went through the website and saw as a small blurb within the site that this was not a private room so I will take responsibility for that. I would not return. read more

I showed him a bunch of inspo pictures but still was a bit unsure of what exactly I wanted, but he was able to help me identify the kind of style I was looking for. In my initial appointment with him, I wanted to go as light as possible-- however, due to my previous hair dye, the colors came out uneven. He still stayed for about 6-7 hours total (despite my uncooperative hair), meticulously working on it to get it to even out and asked me to come back for a free touch up so he can get my hair to the ideal color I originally wanted! I've been used to hairdressers just sending me on my way despite the unsatisfactory final product, but Masaki was super attentive and careful with application. After this second touch up, my hair was fully evened out in tone and bleaching and I am so satisfied with the final results. In terms of hair cutting, he also does a wonderful job as well-- he pretty much is able to replicate your reference photo. Masaki cuts hair so meticulously and beautifully to ensure that you get the style that you want. I loved the layers that he cut, he always checks to ensure everything is even and looks good. He may take a bit longer than other stylists (my haircut took an hour and a half), but I actually appreciated this, it shows that he's putting the effort into ensuring his clients are happy. Got a haircut and color. Was nervous to try a new salon bc I have fine hair and I was worried about damage. But my hair was getting too long so I finally decided to try out masa hair. Cut: masa is the only hair stylist who actually styled my hair according to how I part it! Normally it gets cut based on a middle part then the stylist flips my hair back to the part. He also spent a lot of time texturing it to not be blunt, which I quite appreciated. Color: was most concerned about hair getting fried from the bleach due to having fine hair. Has been a few weeks and my hair still feels great! Blending is good too in my opinion. Next time I think I'll go back to my blonde but I'm glad I tried a new color this time! So much happened that I will try to condense my review. The stars are because he was accommodating and had an overall pleasant attitude. The hair washing was relaxing. I explained the haircut I wanted but did not leave with that haircut. Masa took liberties and put in layers. These layers were counteractive to the haircut I described so I was left with straggly pieces of hair for the bottom 1-2". I texted and was able to go back a few days later for a repair. While there it was very clear that he still did not understand the simple haircut that I wanted. I'm not sure he's up-to-date with current techniques and styling terms. at first I thought his haircut style was meticulous and then I realized it's just slow If I didn't know any better, I would say he just started cutting hair. 5 stars solely because of his skill and talent. The salon itself could use some work, but he's not the owner so that's out of his control. It's rare that I go to the same stylist more than 2-3 times. I have thick straight Asian hair and a round face. I'm not a hair stylist, but I would think that my hair is easy enough to work with. Maybe I have terrible luck or I'm super picky, but I never found a stylist that knew how to work with my hair well...until I stumbled upon Masa that is. He starts off with an observation of your hair and listening to your requests. He will run his fingers through your hair to get a feel for what your hair needs and how to execute your requests. From there, he will move on to the sink to shampoo and condition your hair. During this, he will also give you a soothing and awesome head and neck massage. I think I fall asleep every single time!   Once that's done, you're back onto the chair. I noticed in all of my appointments he does both wet and dry cuts. When your hair is still wet, he will do the bigger chopping or the trimming. Afterwards, he blow dries your hair and goes into doing the more detailed parts of the haircut. He has great technique and he's not super extra with his movements like I've seen other stylists do (lol). He always spends anywhere from 45 mins to an hour cutting my hair. He's very meticulous and pays great attention to detail which I appreciate a lot! Also, a good thing to note is that he's very light-handed which is amazingggg. I've had other stylists who have manhandled my scalp while combing, blow-drying, or coloring my hair and I walk away from my appointment a bit traumatized.   Also, he's not a chatty person. I can't speak for anyone else, but personally I prefer it when my stylist or anyone who is doing me a service of any kind not to be chatty. It's not that I think they're beneath me in any way, I have anxiety so talking to other people that I'm not personally comfortable with exacerbates my anxiety even further. Tip 1: Cash only. Luckily, there's a Citibank, a Chase, a Bank of America and other banks nearby. Tip 2: He works out of Shai's Salon, which can be a bit confusing at first. He usually takes the chair next to the bathroom door. Tip 3: He's super accommodating when it comes to scheduling! It's rare to find a salon open past 7 PM on the weekdays, but Masa will actually take later appointments without an issue. Just make sure to call or text him ahead of time. read more

I was in need of a sprucing up, my hair was grown out, brassy and damaged. I also didn't want to spend to much on getting my hair done, so I went to salonapprentice.com and found Masa! He was seeking a color model, and I expressed that I wanted to get rid of my hot mess hair.
