I normally hesitate to leave 1 star reviews (or reviews at all tbh) but my most recent experience honestly left me really disappointed. I've been going to New Hair since 2021, for color (double process) and cuts. I normally book with the same two stylists, an associate and director, both of whom have been really great! Unfortunately, they weren't available for my most recent appointment, so I booked with a Sr. Stylist, Jeane. (Warning: very long post) For context, my hair is bleached to a light brown, and I've always booked root touch ups. In the past, there's never been an issue with me booking this - my previous stylists have always done 1 round of bleach + 1 round of toner to update my roots, then styled my hair after. When I came in, Jeane sat me down and confirmed we were doing a root touch up today. She confirmed with me that I just wanted my roots done, and I said yes, I'd like to just match my roots to my hair. She did not say anything else, and proceeded to get to work. When she began, I noticed that she was putting a red color on my roots - that should've been my first red flag, since bleach isn't normally red. I wish I spoke up, but figured hey, she's a Sr. Stylist, maybe this is just some new mix (surprise - it was not). After she let it process in my hair, she came back and looked at it, and it was only at that point when she said "you need bleach if you want it to match your hair." HUH. At this point, I start panicking a little - why did she decide to put red in my roots? The rest of my hair isn't even red! What happened to the bleach? This is when I realized there was a disconnect. I told her when I normally do this, my usual stylist bleaches then tones my roots. At this point, if she had apologized and recognized she made a mistake, and offered to remedy this immediately, I wouldn't be writing this review. Instead, she repeatedly starts to blame me for the situation, saying I "should've told her I needed bleach first." HUH. So I'm completely shocked rn. As a professional, it should've been obvious from the beginning that my roots would need bleach to match the color of my hair. My hair is nearly blonde, and my roots are black! Even if the "root touch up" appointment doesn't include bleach (which there should be an option for on the website btw - root touch up w/ bleach), she should've confirmed with me first what I wanted to do before randomly getting to work. She could've said "btw, this appointment doesn't include bleach" and I could've rebooked, or asked me if I wanted to move forward with something else, but instead, we ended up in a situation where my roots were completely misdone and I was gaslit for not micromanaging a professional stylist. Anyway fast forward, I ended up with a completely different hair color which fortunately doesn't look bad, but I originally came in wanting to keep my same hair color. They ended up charging me for double process + color, which is fine since that's what I did, but good customer service would've been 1) acknowledging the mistake rather than continuing to blame me throughout the appointment 2) not charging for the full color, since that only happened because of the initial mistake. It's not even the fact that I paid full price - I've always come in for the same root touch up process, which always runs $400+ with tip, and have been coming here religiously. It's the fact that the stylist just never apologized and continued to gaslight me throughout the appointment, even going as far as making a joke about it at the end. The cherry on top is I also very obviously wear straight bangs - she didn't even bother to style them when she was done! My bangs went MIA lol. My old stylist would never. read more

Wow. Bravo Sarah. It's been a little over a week after my haircut and just realized what a master stylist Sarah is. I wake up and my hair is just magnificent and almost like I just styled it. I found her on instagram and yelp and looked through her work since I normally don't like in NYC and don't get my hair cut here but I'm definitely looking for a return flight for my next hair cut. She was thorough in asking how I wear my hair, how I style it normally and what I like or don't like and even the texture of my hair and has it changed. 100% agree with Juhee Y.'s post below. While I can't recommend the coloring services at this establishment, I can recommend getting styled by Sarah. Sarah took the time to examine my hair and asked many questions about my expectations. She was honest, attentive, realistic about the hair style/length that I envisioned, and personable throughout my appointment with her. On the other hand, my colorist butchered my single-process hair coloring, costing me $225+ 20% tip (bc I'm not petty and will tip for services rendered). Although I had an appointment, she had me waiting 30minutes before starting the coloring process to take another customer, and proceeded to take additional two walk-in customers in between my appointment. As Juhee mentioned, when I addressed my dissatisfaction and pointed out the botched coloring job, there was no accountability, apology or adjustment, neither by the colorist or owner who was aware of the situation. Additionally, the main front staff person/scheduler is not personable or professional, and wasted my time collecting requirements (asking me to send photos of my current hair, ideal color and cut style) but never relaying my information onto my colorist or stylist in preparation of my appointment. Lastly, the shampoo assistants need to be better trained and educated, I.e. knowing how and at what temperatures to properly wash freshly colored hair (you should never wash freshly colored hair with hot water!). Overall, I would not recommend this salon because the most of the work of coloring, washing, and styling your hair is done by the assistants in trainings. My decision to cut my hair was very spontaneous. No one from my family even knew I was making this big decision considering how long my hair was. (Pictures attached) I called and was lucky enough to get an appointment. Walking in I was so nervous to cut my hair - i usually always get small end-trims but never a big chop. I made a Friday appointment after work which I almost bailed on because it was a particularly long week at work, but I decided to go, and was really happy that I did. My appointment was for a Japanese Straightening treatment. Ai was my primary stylist, and Dex helped her out to help move the process along because this particular process is LONG (4 hours on hair that falls just below the shoulders). Ai was so meticulous throughout the entire process and paid a lot of attention to detail - she was sweet and very attentive, and ensured that every part of the process was comfortable and enjoyable. Dex is absolutely adorable (not to mention, he had his own client during part of my styling treatment, and her hair came out beautifully). The energy and vibe of the salon is very cool. Got home that night and my 13 year old daughter said, "Woah. I LOVE it." That's about the highest praise you can get from a teenage girl... Aside from looking like a rock star, Megan cuts hair like one too! Professional and assertive and very savvy about hair. She listen to your preferences which is a must for me. Her recommendations and advice all seemed to make sense and she definitely knew how to treat my very thick straight hair. The dye was perfect - it didn't get all over my forehead or neck & ears like in other careless salons - my cut was shaped like straight hair should be. All around very professional treatment. I've been here a few times and had cuts with Claire and Tiffany. While both of them have different styles, they are super talented and detail oriented. They take feedback well and will work with you to make sure you like your haircut. In terms of price, it is on the pricier side when everything adds up, including tip. Therefore, please do your research accordingly and make sure that you really want to work with your stylist. My stylist was Lena and even though it was my first time, I liked the styles I saw on her Instagram (they have a pretty thorough online portfolio of each of their stylists) and felt confident making an appointment with her. You can simply call and ask for availability. Before my cut, I showed her pictures and explained what I was looking for. Lena was pretty thorough even making sure she knew if the cut would go with my face shape before she started the cut. English is not the first language for some of them, so be kind - it didn't get in the way of my communicating with them. The salon space was also very clean and spacious and not cluttered at all which I liked. I was also surprised by their hair-washing station's seats (the foot rest came out when I was seated)! Lena also clearly loves what she does and cares about the overall health of the hair and scalp, taking time to explain what could work for you. PLEASE AVOID unless you want to go bald. Never been to a Supercuts, but I'm sure they could be better. $310 and 24 hours later after my cut which included a down perm, my hair has started to fall apart and breaking apart into pieces, literally falling down and into the sink when I simply brush it with my fingers. Everything was great when I left the salon, I didn't go into the heat, wash my hair or use any other products until the next day. The next day, I noticed bald spots on the side of my head and back, ran to the sink and saw my hair was literally breaking apart into pieces if I simply touched it with my fingers. Keep in mind I have extremely healthy hair - I've had a single down perm before and it was perfect, so clearly whatever chemicals and methods they used here destroyed my perfectly healthy hair overnight. My naturally straight hair on the side of my head has curled into brittle clumps of damaged hair. Disgusting as it sounds, it turned into something similar like pubic hair - best way to describe what this salon will do to your hair. After forcing the receptionist to have an owner call me, I get an extremely rude owner, Brandon, who won't prioritize me same day and won't admit their wrongdoings. "We don't know if it's our fault" was his response - insinuating that this could be my fault?! Please avoid - I'm filing all necessary complaints to have this place shutdown and inform anyone I can to avoid to this place. UPDATE: I went to another hair stylist who said the colors I wanted are possible without extreme damage once the red fades out. She also said my hair is very healthy and naturally healthy so she's unsure why I would need to give up on certain colors. She said multiple sessions might be needed but it's not impossible. I can see now the New Hair stylist I went to only cares about himself. I really wanted to like this place but my overall experience was awful. Lorenzo made it seem like my thick hair was an inconvenience to him. He didn't want to listen to my cut history because my hair has to be cut a certain way. He pushed on his way of cutting my hair and shamed me when I asked for anything I wanted. I went in wanting to do a certain color combo over the home box dye job I did during the pandemic and was absolutely shamed. I understand box dye is a big no no at salons but it was the pandemic and I was depressed, sue me. I wasn't trying to hide it, I was honest about what I did and the products I used. I also understand my hair is naturally very dark black but I've done light blonde and silver before, over box dye without completely frying my hair. At first Lorenzo made it seem like he was concerned for my hair health and recommended alternative colors but I didn't like brown or red. He kept pushing me to do one of those colors and I eventually caved. He said I could never do any colors like silver or pink and that red and brown (balayage) was my only option. His exact words were "you should give up on colors like those." He also referred to the colors I wanted as ridiculous. I overheard him MAKING FUN of my box dye job with ANOTHER STYLIST only a few feet away from me at the hair washing stations. He tried to lower his voice when I looked over but they laughed and snickered in my direction. I found it when I got home but there's an entire patch of yellow in my hair, missing red. A true way to test a business is to see how they treat you after they make a mistake on you. If you like your hair at the end of their service, congrats - you saved yourself from some headache. The moment they screw up, your stylist will be busy running away from you like a coward - forget owning up & giving you a real apology. My self-proclaimed 'color specialist' named Claire dyed my hair jet black when I asked for dark brown (like chestnut/chocolate brown). She's categorized as a mid-tier stylist at the salon so I didn't even think that she could screw up such a simple job. Yet, she can. I did get my complimentary hair treatment and refund at the end...because first, I couldn't agree with her when she tried to convince me that my hair is dark brown. Second, she refused to help me out further and I eventually had to speak with somebody else for help. Even with refund, I made my way out back to their salon because they said they needed my card physically (New Hair suggested I could give my credit card number over text...excuse me?). I get there, and they tell me that they can somehow magically do it without my card. Like as if they wanted me to come in because they were curious to see what I looked like. At this point, I've decided that I'm 100% done with this place & will never give it a second chance. To me, mistakes can happen. What matters is the follow up & how they handle it. Sadly, New Hair failed on that part. If you really want to color your hair here, just pay more for senior stylists. Maybe they know how to color brown, and this entire situation won't need to happen in the first place unlike me. In my experience, there's no diff between junior and mid-tier stylists at this salon.
