When and how did I discover Algebra Tea House? I don't exactly remember. I think it was around 2011. (It could have been earlier but my 5 star review of this place 16 years ago is an objective starting point). Although I have spent much of the past 23 years living in various places outside of both Cleveland and Ohio, I'm a born and raised East Side Clevelander. And whenever I resettle in the area, I always find myself gravitating back to Algebra Tea House for the good vibes. In the past several months that I have been visiting, I'm happy to see the place really feels like a cultural community hub and an outright neighborhood institution. Over the years, many unique small businesses that have shuttered operations in Coventry (China Treasure House, Big Fun, Record Revolution, La Cave du Vin), Cedar-Fairmount (Nighttown). I'm so happy to see that Algebra Tea House is thriving and continuing to create a unique and inviting environment for the neighborhood. I love the unpretentious and lo-fi atmosphere and operation. I love the DIY craftsmanship that permeates in every aspect of the business. The food and beverage options are also quite good. Although I haven't been around for many years, I think maybe there are more offerings on the menu these days. I especially love the vegetable stews on their chalkboard menu and the foul madamas (fava beans). Service is lo-fi and very casual. Just place your order at the counter. It is written on a scratch pad. Sit down and be patient. The food or beverage will then be delivered to your table. Pay on your way out. Great little spot! Stopped in for brunch/lunch with a friend on a nice Saturday afternoon. Many of the tables were full but we were able to find a spot (it helps that the weather was nice so the outdoor tables were open too). You order at the counter and then they bring the food and drinks to your table and you pay on the way out. Interior decor is eclectic and fun to look at and the mugs are all unique which makes fun a nice and funky aesthetic...we loved it. Service was really friendly too. There were so many items on the menu that looked amazing - it was hard to choose just one! I ended up going for that hummus sandwich (more of a wrap, really) and subbed tomatoes for black and green olives and got the cafe algebra to drink. My friend chose the white pizza and the hibiscus tea. Food came out pretty quickly and everything was good! The hummus was creamy and delicious and the harissa was great too...the olives were excellent as well! My friend enjoyed her pizza and the hibiscus tea was so flavorful. It can get a bit cramped with a lot of people all standing in line trying to order and/or pay. Staff is very friendly and helpful--I asked one guy about whether this fruit and toast dish was worth it and he was like nahhh and steered me to something better, lol. I appreciate notes like that! They charge a 3% credit card fee so they encourage cash. 3 out of the 4 of us ordered the Iraqi kebab wrap and while it was good, it was a bit dry and didn't come with any dipping sauce. I finally visited in late September 2024 with a new friend. We both ordered the Palestinian tea ($4). The Palestinian tea tasted fine to me but maybe I should have asked for honey. The Palestinian tea is described as a savory black tea with a hint of caraway and sage. The tea flavour was bland and it probably would have tasted better with honey. If you like a plain black tea then maybe this one is for you. I did not order food because when I walked in, it looked a bit unkept (not dirty but okay looking). Their food looks like regular breakfast/lunch items from sandwiches to salads. My friend ordered the spinach pie which came with a side salad and he enjoyed it. I'll be back to try a different tea. We ordered a Palestinian flatbread, a Mediterranean omelette and the algebra dessert. Service was painfully slow. I have been going to Algebra for YEARS. I used to live next door, but my partner and I had to move to DC. I miss it dearly. The ambiance is amazing, especially for the long study sessions. The service is top tier, I always love talking to whoever is working. And the food is the best in Cleveland at a reasonable price. I go through phases of smoothies, soups, and wraps. Adorable middle eastern cafe! They have an extensive tea selection as well as coffee and traditional foods. There are many vegan/vegetarian food options as well. From the moment you walk in the door, the decor stands out as adorable and eclectic. The staff was also very friendly, the last time I visited they were cutting baklava and gave my mom and I the edge pieces for free, which was a sweet gesture. This place is adorable, from the hobbit-hole-esque front door to the hand thrown mugs that the beverages come in. It's a very artsy hang out down Murray Hill in Little Italy. The tea and pastries were delicious and really well priced. My friend and I each had a chai, and I had a piece of the baklava. The chai tea came out as a lightly sweetened chai latte, that was made from real tea. So good! We were charmed by the mugs and really enjoyed the interior and the vibes. I don't even know where to begin. This is my abaolute new favorite space. Not even just for the food, but the air is so warm and i viting, the servers/chefs/baristas (they do it all right behind the counter) are so genuinely lovely. I sat at a handcrafted table very close to the ground on a lounging chair with a soft hide and cute little pumpkin pillows, while close by was a small crackling fire. Our food was brought out to us insanely quickly by the kindest, friendliest woman. My friend and I ordered three plates to share as well as a smoothie each, and with an over 20% tip (mentioning this because it added heftily to the overall cost) we each only paid $27. The smoothies were amazing, the food was so hearty and tasted like you were eating a good meal at an old friend's home. They have a crazy selection of tea and the only other time I'd been there I tried one of their lattes which certainly did not disappoint either. With crazy quick service, insanely reasonable prices with huge helpings of food, and the most wholesome full feeling you have when you leave (in both your stomach and soul), I could not begin to recommend Algebra Teahouse enough. read more

I love coming to Algebra Tea House! It is such a unique place to go for a delicious meal and a warm cup of tea. They have quite an extensive selection of teas (and coffee drinks if tea isn't your thing). 5's all around! From the solid menu to the eclectic furniture and most importantly the stellar tea selection! I usually come to Algebra Tea House for coffee or tea and some baklava. Sometimes their turkish delights too. This time, made a point to come for breakfast after looking at their food options for the weekend. I had always loved their funky ceramic mugs and the fact that they sell some tea and other goods there if you need some pantry items! Started off with some coffee: their coconut pepper cafe was topped with fresh ground pepper but wasn't too spicy or overwhelming. It paired nicely with the savory food we ordered. They have their bacon egg and veggie bagel sandwich on the weekend. I was intrigued by the harissa on it so I had to get it! They served it on a cute wooden board with a few apple slices. That thing was packed so it was tough not to spill while eating it, but loved how the harissa added to an otherwise classic breakfast bagel sandwich. The highlights were the shak-shooka egg and tomato dish with their home fries. The shak-shooka had a dollop of harrisa and a fresh green sauce. I know it's not the traditional way it's usually served but it almost was like an egg scramble for breakfast! They give you a side of pita with it too. If you're not sure, try it anyway! For ~$7-9, most food items were well priced! I always have to get the home fries option (or other fried potato). I loved whatever cajun spices they seasoned the home fries with. Of course, the goal is to try all of their teas. Teas and coffees were only ~$3, but more if you get one of the lattes (~$3.5-$5). My two favorites are the house latte (they sweeten with honey and add rosewater) and the chocolate chai. The tea house has limited outdoor seating when the weather is nice. Mostly street parking in the historic Little Italy area (which can be tough to find), but I think there's a small parking lot behind the tea house. I've come here just for some tea or to come and do some work. They always play a mix of mile eastern music and instrumentals which I love as background music. They also have a table of some games or books. I always see first dates or early dates whenever I come to Algebra Tea House, but who could blame them. My friends took me here when I was visiting and I'm almost mad that they hadn't brought me on my last two visits to Cleveland because I love tea houses. We sat outside at their cute sidewalk seating and all enjoyed beverages and some snacks. We got the Labneh (Lebanese cheese served with pita) and the Yafa oh Yafa flatbread (flatbread with veggies, walnuts, and cheese). Both portions were surprisingly large for appetizers/small plates and everything was delicious! Simple ingredients done very well, with very clean flavors. The labneh was creamy, the flatbread was crispy, and the pita was nice and warm. I can't remember the name of it, but I also got an iced tea latte thing that was delicious (it was a special written near the register), but I would honestly try most of their 30+ teas! You may walk in here thinking 'What is this place??' A little quirky with its hodgepodge of randomness, but somehow it works for this place. Follow the red brick road and you'll stumble upon this colorful tea house with bright green accents painted outside and various shaped wood tables. Parking can be tricky on the street, but apparently they have a little lot behind the building. I was lucky to find street parking right in front! Inside there is a long shelf of loose leaf teas for purchase in the $18-$20 range for a bag. As a cafe, they have a menu of middle eastern and other meal items. Seems like they are known for their teas though. I got the mother earth tea which has rose in it. Light in flavor. Every tea ordered comes in an odd shaped ceramic mug. Turns out the owner makes each of these colorful mugs and sells them for $35 too. Tea time isn't complete without a sweet treat. They had baklava, Turkish delight, and other cookies. The baklava I got was great! A cup of tea and one baklava comes to just under $5. Free wifi, sofas, bean bag chair, and other random wooden tables are spread out for you to work or enjoy a cup of tea. I liked the idea of the tea house but once you got there it was a completely different vibe. I have been to a few tea houses in Ohio and this was definitely the worst one in terms of cleanliness and service. When you get inside it's really dirty, All the tables we sat at had some sort of sticky film in it and it left your hands feeling tacky so gross! Also dirty dishes were laying everywhere in the kitchen area and we saw bugs on them! We ended us getting a wrap and some tea I will say the wrap was good but once I saw the bugs in the kitchen I quickly changed my mind... And the mugs for the tea I have some notes. We got our tea and the portions were so small. While I appreciate the craftsmanship however cannot justify the payment of $5 for tea that isn't even enough to fill a small plastic water bottle. The cups were so strangely shaped it made it hard to move the tea around to properly steep it was just very impractical. Again I can appreciate the art aspect but this is a tea house I should not be struggling to drink my tea... Over all I would say that cleanliness definitely needs improvement and make or use cups that have equal portions. read more

The main entrees range from American style breakfasts to more Middle-Eastern for those who are more adventurous and those who want something familiar. Ok so to start the tables were sticky. The mugs are very weird. They are definitely hand made but possibly by a blind person. I almost couldn't get the tea strainer out of the mug because it had to be shoved in(added a video showing it). They have art for sale that is way over priced. Sooo...I liked it, glad I went, wouldn't run back for it. The breakfast was tasty. We got "the works" which is 2 eggs, beef bacon and breakfast potatoes. Not a huge portion, but perfect size for breakfast. I think the coffee was terrible - thin. The espresso wasn't much better. We tried tea, and that was really good. Caution, they do put ground coconut IN some of the teas, not just steeped. You will be chewing on your chai . Overall, great place to get tea and read a book.
