The combination fried rice had big pieces of meat, carrots, and huge shrimp. I also noticed that they put in some orange peppers, which was a really good addition . This is family run restaurant. Dad cooks, the elementary school age kids kids are servers and do the rest. Mom just tells you it's 1/2 hour to 1 hour wait minimum for 1 item and charges you for the sodas. Bern to other 1 person asian restaurants with larger menus who art bud er and can do orders faster. This was tricky for me. I ate a fine enough meal here. And I really like generally giving 5 star reviews. I usually don't bother writing them unless it's a 5 or a 1. Something has to inspire me to bother writing a review. So here goes... But... I stand by my decision to eat here. I'm in Rend Lake Illinois. (Not regularly from around here). I'm going to guess fine Asian cuisine is not hugely high on the priority list here. Case in point- this place will serve you Japanese. Or Chinese. Or Thai. Possibly Vietnamese (I don't know- I didn't get that far into the menu). I wanted to NOT eat a burger. Or bbq. Heck, I'll say it. I wanted VEGETABLES. This place had dishes that had vegetables. I got a Thai red vegetable curry and for a start I went with the 6 piece avocado cucumber nori roll. The roll took longer. It didn't come as my appetiser because it took longer to make. Ok. Cool. I'll have it when it gets here. I was served by a child. A real one. Cute as can be- maybe 8 or even 7. Ok no problem. Must be an Illinois thing. Child comes and asks my drink. And coughs. No, not your regular stifled cough, but the kind of cough only an 8 year old can do. Super wet. Super bubbly. The kind of sound you can make when you finish your Pepsi with a straw but you just keep on suckin'. Yep. Then she coughs again- just as bodacious. This time she covers it with her sleeve. Then she gets me a straw and asks if I want a straw with my water. I think to myself "wild dogs could not get me to put that rancid germ infested mucus pipe into my drink" but I say "no. No thank you". I then get served my curry, this time by the owner- I'm guessing her mum. The vegetables in my curry are onion, carrot, lots of green squash (of some kind), maybe a bamboo shoot, green pepper. No broccoli. I find the "no broccoli thing" a little weird. I know you're all like "what a fricken jerk. It's just a piece of broccoli", but to be fair, IT WASN'T (no broccoli to be seen) and I dunno, It's just a lovely green fresh looking thing that makes a Thai curry come alive even just to look at it. But no broccoli. Probably because of the shortage. Some supply chain issue. And an egg cup of rice. Probably about 5 teaspoons. Probably another shortage of some kind. Then the child came back with the nori rolls. Coughed once, placed the plate down and then coughed twice more for maximum effect. Like the molten geo thermal lava pits of Rotorua NZ. I swear she looked me dead in the eye as she did it and everything went into slow motion. Ok, all of the rest of this I can forgive. The broccoliless curry, the egg cup of rice (the owner even brought me more when I finished the first lot in about 3 nanoseconds) and there was no extra charge. The curry was, eh, forgettable if I'm being painfully honest, but at least it was veggies. The nori rolls were splendid. It's just the serving child with the hacking cough. That's the bit I can't get past. Even if she was "background hacking cough child" that would be something. But no, she was front and center. So it's 5 stars for value (this was super cheap), you know, 4 stars for forgettable but fine enough curry with about 3 grains of rice, replenished with another 5 grains of rice, 5 stars for quite lovely vegetable nori rolls, and minus one star each for each BOUT of bubbling lava coughs. I'll even add another half star because the kid was cute. Well ok I can't give a half star in this thing. But you know. Imagine it. 3 1/2 stars. I can't be more generous than that. read more

This is one that I'm a little sure as to how to review it. The dining room is a little on the shabby side. I'm pretty sure the server may have also been cooking the good. She'd take an order or deliver some food and then disappear in the back until she brought something else out. I ordered the gyoza. They came with spicy ketchup. Something I'd never seen before and something I think is plain wrong. They tasted good, I like the way the had been fried, but didn't like the ketchup at all. I also got pad Thai. Also a very unusual presentation. I ordered without egg. It came with what I think was a peanut dust, that didn't really add flavor and gave the dish a very strange consistency. It also had green pepper. I'm not sure what the brown sauce was. It was a little sweet and a little spicy and I did like it. Overall, I did like the dish but would order without the peanut dust next time. There was only one other couple there when I was. I talked to them and they eat here quite a lot and have tried several different things. I think I will eat here again, but I do think it's a bit unusual. read more

This place is behind a CVS and next to the world's sketchiest surgery center but me and my friends decided to give this place a try. Inside its run by assumedly the owner's kids and it gives a home-grown feel to the food being served. I know this place seems to be known for their sushi but I ended up getting the pad thai and my friend got orange chicken. Interestingly enough the orange chicken came with the orange peels still covered in sauce. We discovered this after biting into one and dissecting it. Odd but glad to know that there is genuine oranges in the orange chicken. The pad Thai on the other hand was unlike any pad Thai I've ever seen. The sauce was watery and brown and the flavor was... odd. Not bad per say but not really pad Thai either. Sure it may have had noodles, bean sprouts and peanuts but it was as Thai as Joe Biden is Russian, not really and could only even really be considered if your eyesight was impaired and you looked for half a second. The dumplings were fine and inoffensive. At the end of the day I may come back if I truly wish for some asian food but not regularly by any stretch of the imagination. read more

Really loved the Spicy King, and presentation on the Sweetheart was awesome. But the Black Dragon was underwhelming. Perhaps the biggest drawback here was the service. We had a party of four adults and four little kids (all under 4). Well, it took us just under **two hours** to have our meal. The rolls came out one or two at a time. In my mind, you should be able to get out of a restaurant in an hour. Fortunately, we weren't in a hurry. Had we been, I'd be in a much worse mood writing this review. read more

This was my first visit. The waitress was quick to greet us and deliver menus. The menu is massive. There are so many choices that it can be a bit overwhelming. My husband ordered peanut chicken and I ordered tempura shrimp sushi. We also ordered the sugared donut appetizer for after the meal. The peanut chicken had a great crunchy coating and flavor. However, it was a bit tough. My tempura shrimp sushi was delicious. Also, the donut appetizer had about 10 donuts. It was very inexpensive. I decided on Ali for my birthday dinner this year as it's a good meeting point between me and some family members who live further away. None of us had ever been there, but we left pleased. Upon ordering our food, the waitress asked us how to split the check and if we were paying cash or credit. When we said we would all be on one check and paying with cash, she showed us a page with special deals. Because of the amount we spent and the fact that we were paying with cash, we ended up with several free items for the table to share. In addition, they brought out a free small plate of crab and Japanese squash with a sweet pink sauce on it. Overall we wound up with a lot of leftovers, both because of the large portion sizes and the amount of free food. The food itself was very good. The menu offered a variety of options, so even the picky eaters in the group had no trouble finding something they liked. The sushi was very well-plated, and I'm sure will end up on multiple family members' instagram accounts because of how good it looked. The other dishes ordered were great as well. The staff of the restaurant was friendly and worked hard to accommodate our large group. They were even nice enough to bring out extra plates and forks for the birthday cake we had brought with us. Our server was attentive to our needs; she kept the drinks full and tried to clear plates when we were done with them without it ever feeling like she was hovering. This is a hidden gem. We were traveling and like to dine at local business as much as possible. After a few wrong turns we found the correct spot. A true family operated business with excellent food on an extensive Chinese, Japanese and Thai menu. Wish we had time to try more selections. The Hot & Sour soup was very good. We were split on our review of them but I wasn't a fan because I personally don't like onion flavor. My girlfriend thought they were great. So it depends on your personal taste. I had the spider roll which was enough for 1 dinner and looked amazing on the plate. However I was a bit disappointed the crab was cold and not warm. The flavors were delicious! My girlfriend had the chicken with garlic sauce which was amazing! We both agreed the flavor was delicious. Ali Asian Cuisine is a small what appeared to be a family owned Asian inspired restaurant located in Mt Vernon. I stopped in on my way home one weekend for a quick lunch, much to my surprise when I first walked in I noticed two young children running around the dining area, one was even in a chair allowing him to roam the floor while others dined. I quickly realized that these children did not belong to any of the diners, but the owner. Sigh, a restaurant should never be a substitution for a day care. Nerveless we decided to go ahead and take a seat, while looking over the menu the two children continue to roam around, the older one even walked up to a table and stared down a couple while they were eating. My initial impressions were less than impressed, however once our waitress stopped by with a menu we were incredibly shocked to see discover how reasonable everything was. There is a large reasonably priced lunch menu that is available every day from 11am-3pm for only $4.99. I went with the General Tso's Lunch Special, which was served with soup and rice. The size was perfect for lunch, and quite tasty. The Egg Drop soup was very tasty, and again perfectly sized. The table also ordered an order of eight crab Rangoon for only $2.99, again this was a great value. The crab rangoon was small, however you could tell that it was made in house crispy with a light cream cheese filling complete with pieces of crab, while the sauce had a watered down consistency and taste. Overall the meal was reasonably priced at less than $15 for two, which made us question if we were even charged correctly. Service was good, our waitress was friendly and delivered our food fast. Seating inside is adequate, with the inside split into two sections each with about 8 tables of four. Overall this was a great experience and an excellent meal, given the quality of the food and the attentiveness of the waitress I can overlook the playing children, and I can say that if I am ever back in Mt. Vernon I will be returning for seconds! read more

Interesting, weird, bizarre, but I like it and would order it again. I would go back here. Hubby said no way. I think if you stick with traditional Chinese you are ok.
